Episode · May 30, 2026 What to Do When You Inherit Money: The Rules, the Risks, and the Right Moves The Tom Dupree Show|Dupree Financial Group|dupreefinancial.com|859-233-0400 Episode Description Inheriting money should feel like good news — and it often is. But the moments surrounding an inheritance are rarely straightforward. There’s grief. There’s urgency. There’s a sudden responsibility for assets you didn’t plan for, invested in ways not designed for your situation. In this episode, Tom Dupree and Lead Advisor Mike Johnson walk through what actually happens when wealth transfers from one generation to the next — and what to do about it. The conversation covers the full spectrum of inherited assets: taxable investment accounts with stepped-up cost basis, life insurance proceeds, annuities with embedded tax liabilities, and the increasingly complicated world of inherited IRAs. Tom and Mike explain how the SECURE Act of 2019 effectively ended the stretch IRA, what the 10-year rule now requires of most non-spouse beneficiaries, and why failing to plan around required annual distributions can trigger a decade of preventable tax consequences. The episode also covers practical strategies for current asset owners — how to use appreciated stock gifts to rebalance efficiently, when to let a legacy holding ride to pass a stepped-up basis to heirs, and why having all parties (investment advisor, CPA, and attorney) on the same page before a transfer happens makes everything smoother. Knowing what you own and why you own it isn’t just good advice for volatile markets — it’s the foundation of a plan your heirs can actually build on. Topics Covered The gray wave: why trillions in wealth are changing hands over the next 15 years The 90-day rule: why pausing before making any major financial move protects you Stepped-up cost basis on inherited taxable accounts — how it works and why it matters Tax treatment differences between inherited IRAs, annuities, and life insurance proceeds The SECURE Act’s 10-year rule for inherited IRAs and required annual distributions Exceptions to the 10-year rule: spouses, minor children, disabled beneficiaries, and siblings within 10 years Using inherited IRA withdrawals to fund Roth conversions on your own accounts Gifting appreciated stock to charity as a tax-efficient rebalancing strategy Why beneficiary designations and estate coordination require regular review How Dupree Financial Group coordinates with CPAs and attorneys to quarterback inheritance planning Key Takeaways Pause before you act. An inheritance often arrives during an emotionally charged time. Waiting 90 days before making any major gifting, investment, or debt payoff decisions keeps emotion out of choices with long-term consequences. Not all inherited assets are taxed the same. Taxable investment accounts typically receive a stepped-up cost basis — wiping out embedded capital gains for the beneficiary. Life insurance proceeds are generally income-tax-free. Annuities and inherited IRAs carry ordinary income tax obligations. Knowing the vehicle determines the strategy. The stretch IRA is gone. The SECURE Act of 2019 eliminated the ability for most non-spouse beneficiaries to stretch inherited IRA distributions over their lifetime. A 10-year withdrawal window now applies, with required annual distributions each year — not just a lump sum in year ten. A withdrawal plan for an inherited IRA is not optional. The IRS requires distributions each year over the 10-year period. Without a coordinated strategy, beneficiaries can face unexpected income spikes, higher tax brackets, and lost reinvestment opportunities. Gifting appreciated stock beats gifting cash. If you plan to give to charity anyway, donating appreciated shares instead of writing a check eliminates the capital gain for you, produces no tax consequence for the charity, and frees up cash to repurchase the same investment at a higher cost basis. Beneficiary designations are the most overlooked planning tool. Outdated or missing designations create probate complications and can override your wishes entirely. Regular reviews — coordinated across investment accounts, retirement plans, and insurance — are essential. Coordination between advisors prevents costly mistakes. Inheritance planning sits at the intersection of investments, taxes, and legal structure. Having your financial advisor, CPA, and attorney aligned — not working in silos — is the difference between a smooth transition and a decade of cleanup. The income approach applies to inherited assets, too. Inherited portfolios that aren’t generating income need to be repositioned around your actual retirement cash flow needs. A growth-oriented portfolio you’ve inherited wasn’t built for your life — it needs to be evaluated in the context of your plan. About The Tom Dupree Show The Tom Dupree Show is hosted by Tom Dupree, founder of Dupree Financial Group and a 47-year veteran of the investment business. Welcome to the Video Store Podcast.I've been watching a lot of football lately. College bowl games are on just about every night and the NFL playoffs are in full swing. Really the only thing better than watching a football game is watching a movie about football and there are some great ones to watch. This week on the Video Store Podcast, I'm spotlighting four movies about football. These are football movies where the game matters but the real story happens off the field. It's about making tough choices, challenging authority and forging character. Necessary Roughness (1991)Necessary Roughness is a comedy straight from the ‘90s, starring Scott Bakula, Hector Elizondo, Sinbad and Kathy Ireland. The Texas State Armadillos have repeatedly violated NCAA rules and the entire football is banned from playing. New coach Ed “Straight Arrow” Gennero is tasked with fielding a new team with no scholarships and no support.Gennero pieces together a misfit team with more heart than talent. Eventually they come together and take on the cross state rivals, Texas Colts. We Are Marshall (2006)What do you do when the unthinkable happens? In 1970, a plane carry the Marshall University football team crashes killing all 37 players and coaches on board.Stricken with grief the University decides to rebuild the team and hires coach Jack Lengyel for the impossible task.Through grit, determination and sorrow the Marshall Thundering Herd football team takes the field to honor the lost players. Johnny Be Good (1988)Johnny Be Good is a late 80s coming-of-age comedy.Johnny Walker is the most wanted high school quarterback in the country and college recruiters will do anything to land him.The movie takes an satirical and exaggerated look at college recruiting practices of the 80s. It's a movie about integrity, self-respect and choosing your own path, no matter the cost. All The Right Moves (1983)Trapped in a dead-end, go-nowhere town Stefan Djordjevic's only hope is a football scholarship to college but clashes with his controlling coach make that dream seem impossible. Stefan watches as his friends go down the wrong path and their dreams fade away. His talent propels him but his ego keeps getting in the way.Through humility and respect Stefan realizes he must make All the Right Moves to succeed. Thanks for visiting the Video Store Podcast. I hope you enjoy the movies whether you're watching them for the first time or rediscovering them all over again. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! What if done really is better than perfect, especially when writing the first draft of your book? Too many brilliant voices get stuck in the trap of trying to make every sentence flawless before they've even finished the first draft. But perfectionism doesn't move ideas forward. Action does. And in the world of thought leadership, clarity comes after courage. The truth is, writing a book isn't about getting it right the first time. It's about showing up for your message, trusting the process, and being willing to revise, refine, and grow along the way. Every imperfect draft is proof that you're doing the real work. That's why I support authors at every step of the journey—from messy beginnings to powerful launches—so their ideas don't stay stuck in their heads. I'm not a writing coach or developmental editor. I'm a strategist. I'll ask you questions to confirm that you're writing the book that will lead to your desired results. Book a complimentary 30-minute session at www.BookLaunchBrainstorm.com. Now, let's hear from three authors who didn't let the pursuit of perfection stop them from sharing something meaningful with the world: Greg Davis wrote “Checkmate: Tips & Lessons to Help You Make the Right Moves to Achieve Happiness!,” a practical and heartfelt guide that blends life lessons and financial wisdom to help you make the right moves toward lasting happiness. Jeff Skipper wrote “Dancing with Disruption: Leading Dramatic Change During Global Transformation,” revealing 12 proven strategies that equip leaders with the tools to overcome resistance and lead bold transformations with confidence. Jenn T. Grace is the author of “Publish Your Purpose: A Step-By-Step Guide to Write, Publish, and Grow Your Big Idea.” She's also the founder of Publish Your Purpose, a hybrid publisher for authors who are thought leaders, experts in their fields, and visionaries paving the way to social change—and one of our Biz Book Pub Hub Partners. Being present in the moment and staying open to whatever unfolds. We all want to lead lives and careers full of joy and fulfillment. Maggie Baird certainly has, and the key, she says, is to stay open to new possibilities and “let your passion lead.”Baird is an accomplished actress, improv teacher at the Groundlings Theater, mother to music sensations Billie Eilish and Phineas, and founder of Support and Feed, a nonprofit addressing food equity and the climate crisis. Through it all, she has embodied the improv principle of "Yes, and..." — being present in the moment and staying open to whatever unfolds. “I have done many things,” she says, “but I never approached any of them as a career change. They all came out of new interests and new experiences.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Baird joins host Matt Abrahams to explore the critical role of communication in developing a career, and how improv principles can help us engage, as Baird says, “From a place of open-heartedness, appreciation, [and] collaboration.”Episode Reference Links:Support And FeedEp.118 Maximizing your Personal Brand: Communicating Who You Are to Help Get What You WantEp.1 Speaking Without a Net: How to Master Impromptu CommunicationEp.9 Quick Think: How Being Present-Oriented Improves Communication Connect:Email Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00:00) IntroductionHost Matt Abrahams introduces guest Maggie Baird, actor and founder of Support and Feed.(00:00:53) Career Transitions Advice on embracing new opportunities without rigid planning.(00:01:45) Teaching and Confidence Through Improv Discovering improv and how teaching led to a new sense of confidence and creativity.(00:04:03) Improv as a Communication Tool The principles of improv and how they can enhance communication and collaboration.(00:05:45) Structure and Freedom in Improv How improv provides structure that frees individuals to speak spontaneously.(00:07:37) Teaching with Empathy Empathy in teaching, remembering what it's like to be a beginner, and avoiding jargon.(00:10:34) Advocacy in the Music Industry Using questions and collaboration to drive change in the music industry and other sectors.(00:13:18) Collaboration and Positive Change The importance of collaboration, positivity, and meeting people where they are to create change.(00:16:07) The Final Three QuestionsMaggie shares her next career change, a communicator she admires, and her ingredients for successful communication.(00:17:46) Conclusion (00:00) - Introduction (01:36) - Career Transitions (02:28) - Teaching and Confidence Through Improv (04:46) - Improv as a Communication Tool (06:28) - Structure and Freedom in Improv (08:20) - Teaching with Empathy (11:17) - Advocacy in the Music Industry (14:01) - Collaboration and Positive Change (16:50) - The Final Three Questions (18:29) - Conclusion
