After a long offseason full of changes for sixth-year head coach Mike Houston, the ECU football season is set to open a new campaign this Saturday, Aug. 31, against Norfolk State inside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. The Pirates are coming off a 2-10 season after consecutive bowl appearances, but are optimistic they can turn things around with much of last year's defense back, and a new-look offense. Hoist The Colours host Stephen Igoe is joined by co-host Sean (AKA NoVaPirate on the Hoist The Colours boards). The two take a deep dive on Jake Garcia being named QB1, what to expect from John David Baker's offense, questions going into the season, the defense as a whole, and what to expect in the opener against Norfolk State. Rate and subscribe to Hoist the Colours on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or Google podcasts. Host: Stephen Igoe Co-Host: Sean (NoVaPirate) This is a podcast centered around East Carolina athletics and recruiting, hosted by Hoist The Colours publisher Stephen Igoe, bringing you game reactions, interviews, in-depth analysis, and breaking recruiting news. Throughout most of the season, it has been the ECU offense that has failed to deliver. However, against Memphis, it was the much-improved Pirate defense that turned in what was its worst performance of the season--at least statistically--as the Tigers rolled up 59 points and well over 600 yards--including more than 270 on the ground--on Saturday afternoon at a sparsely filled Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. On Volume 67 of The Sports Objective, we discuss that, the larger picture of ECU football, the AD search, Pirate hoops and more with Stephen Igoe of HoistTheColours.net.
This episode of the Pirate Football Playback features the guys reflecting on ECU's 37-10 loss to McKenzie Milton-less UCF on Saturday night at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Hometown hero and true freshman signal signal-caller Holton Ahlers made his starting debut for the Pirates. The former DH Conley High School star had 475 total yards—406 passing, 69 rushing—but he and the ECU offense's ability to protect the football led to their demise against the tenth-ranked Knights. We appreciate you listening to the Sports Objective Podcast. Stay tuned for Tuesday's Pirate Football Player Spotlight where we will sit down with three former ECU gridiron greats! On Volume 48 of The Sports Objective, we had the chance to catch up with four key components of the 2008 and 2009 CUSA Championship football teams that ECU produced. First, we chatted with Van Eskridge, who intercepted Case Keenum's long ball in the final minute to help seal the 2009 Championship against Houston at a rockin' Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Enjoy Ron Franklin's call of that pivotal play below: Pirates knock off Houston to win back-to-back CUSA titles! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQjEQKnAzcE Eskridge had a chance to make that memorable interception because of the tremendous coverage that corner Travis Simmons had on the play. We'll catch up with the Florida native and see what he's up to now. Nick Johnson wasn't the fastest or the strongest, but he was SIMPLY a football player. He had a nose for the football and was a tremendous linebacker. We'll talk about how he landed at ECU. Last, but certainly not least, we were joined by Dekota Marshall. Dekota's injury was cut short due to an injury against Virginia Tech in 2009, but he rebounded to play some professional ball in the arena leagues and CFL. Now, the Eastern North Carolina native is back home where he is a successful financial planner and owner of 1st and Goal Hauling, where it's "a touchdown every time!"
an On Volume 44 of the Sports Objective, we take a look back at ECU's 41-19 win over North Carolina on Saturday at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. After leading 21-19 at halftime, the Pirates outscored the Heels, 20-0, following intermission. ECU used a very balanced offensive attack (220 rushing and 290 passing) and a swarming defense to earn their third straight win in a series that doesn't have any future games scheduled. Bubba and Kyle were glad to eat crow! Subscribe to The Sports Objective YouTube Channel for videos from Saturday's win, The Southside Expansion Project and ECU baseball's indoor hitting facility
Volume 43: Pirates seek to bounce back against Tar Heels Following a very frustrating season opening loss to FCS foe North Carolina A&T, the Pirates are preparing to host the UNC Tar Heels (0-1) in a matchup between teams that desperately need a win. To get you ready, we chat with the longtime Voice of the Pirates Jeff Charles, former ECU running back Breon Allen and Adam Lucas from goheels.com and the Carolina Insider Podcast. After multiple weather delays forced the postponement of Saturday's season opener, ECU and NC A&T met at 3:30 on Sunday afternoon in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. The Pirates missed some golden opportunities to seize control of the game in the first half and after struggling for most of the first half, the Aggies put together a touchdown drive on the final possession of the opening 30 minutes. Their first score came on a 100 yard interception by Mac McCain III with just over five minutes left in the opening quarter. ECU couldn't run the ball all day long and redshirt sophomore quarterback Reid Herring, who had attempted just a single pass prior to Sunday, put it in the air 65 times. He spread it around nicely, as Terrell Green had 10 catches and redshirt freshman Blake Proehl hauled in nine! GAMEDAY is almost here!! With the Pirates set to kickoff the 2018 season on Saturday against NC A&T, we're joined by three special guests on Volume 40 of The Sports Objective. Donal will give us a look at what we can expect from first-year head coach Sam Washington's club, as it captured a 20-17 victory over Jacksonville State in the FCS Kickoff Classic last weekend and will bring a 13-game win streak into Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Next, we will talk to Stephen Igoe from HoistTheColours.net, as he provides more in-depth coverage than anyone on ECU football! We get his thoughts on this match-up and the season as a whole! We will wrap things up with a chat with the Executive Director of the ECU Pirate Club, Phillip Wood. Volume 31 of @TheSportsOBJ is one you definitely don't want to miss! Special Advisor to the Chancellor for ECU Athletics Dave Hart, who was the Pirates' AD from 1987-95 and spent more than a decade with the program overall, talks about present day matters facing the ECU Athletic Department in addition to reflecting on some of his favorite memories from his previous years in Greenville! Next, we talked with three key cogs in the Pirate IMG Network's operation! First, we talk to former ECU defensive back Kevin Monroe. Monroe, an alum of Greenville Rose High School, stayed home to play for the Pirates from 1995-99. He holds a record that will never be broken, as he returned an interception 100 yards (actually about 108) for a touchdown against Louisville in 1998 at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium! Now, he serves as the color analyst and is in his 15th year overall with the Pirate IMG Network! His most famous call was likely the "NO FLAGS ON THE FIELD! NO FLAGS ON THE FIELD!!" when ECU's TJ Lee returned a blocked punt for a touchdown to defeat a ranked Virginia Tech team in Charlotte to open the 2008 season. Marty Feurer, long-time sideline analyst, will talk about his experience and favorite memories of covering ECU football over the years such as the challenge of interviewing an animated Steve Logan when leaving the field at halftime. Last, but definitely not least, is David Horn. Horn is the Network Engineer who makes things run as smoothly as possible. He talks about the challenges he's faced through the years with different venues and about producing the 1991 Highlight Video linked below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkCzR7dwV5g Follow us on Twitter & Instagram @TheSportsOBJ Like our Facebook page & Follow our YouTube Channel
