Ivan Maisel is a longtime sports journalist for ESPN known for his insightful analysis, compelling storytelling, and in-depth knowledge. With his ability to blend statistical analysis while highlighting the human side of the game and capturing the emotions and experiences of athletes, coaches, and fans, Ivan has earned a loyal following and widespread acclaim. Yet, when his 21-year-old son Max went missing, Ivan soon learned he'd have to accept the incomprehensible. Although not evident, the years of mental illness became too much to sustain and Max ended his life. Today, Ivan joins us to share his profoundly human and deeply empathetic story of a father's relationship with his son, of its complications, and of the struggle so many parents face with their children— the struggle to connect. My friends, let this conversation serve as a beacon of hope, guiding us to embrace the joys and challenges that come our way, inspiring us to live each day boldly, and reminding us that even in the face of darkness, there is always the possibility of finding light.

Ivan Maisel is an award-winning reporter and writer, who has covered college football for nearly four decades, ESPN, Sports Illustrated, and now on3.com, where he's a Senior Writer AND Vice President of Editorial.8 years ago, Ivan's 21-year-old son Max died by suicide. And what I haven't yet shared on this podcast is the fact that I can really relate - I lost my mom to suicide almost two years ago.Ivan writes about Max's life, death, the stigma around suicide and men's mental health, and his discovery that grief is love in his book, I Keep Trying to Catch His Eye: A memoir of loss, grief and love. It's a beautiful book that made me cry and smile.I am honored that he took the time to talk with me about all of it - his love for Max, his grief that he continues to honor, and the healing he's been through and continues to go through. National college football writer and author Ivan Maisel joins #SportsTalk to discuss the future of the game.
Living what he considered a charmed life, Ivan Maisel was completely unprepared for the unexpected loss of his 21 year old son from suicide. The decisions he made in those first terrible hours, days, weeks, gave him a way forward as he struggled to learn how to live with the unimaginable. He and his family would be open about the loss. They would not hide the cause of his death. He and his family would not judge the way they each grieved. And they would stay together. These simple decisions pointed the way forward; not back to anywhere but carrying the loss within him and learning to live anyway. As time went on he came to view his grief as love. And this changed him, as he says, for the better.

In February of 2015, sportswriter Ivan Maisel got a call that brought the worst possible news. The abandoned car of his son Max had been found in a parking lot next to Lake Ontario, not far from where Max was in college. Two months later, the body washed up. Ivan and his family knew it was suicide and decided to share what had happened; not pretend it was something else. The book “I Keep Trying to Catch His Eye” is about mental health, the stigma of suicide and one family's journey of getting through the unfathomable grief of losing a child.
