Today on Consuming the Craft, I had the pleasure of catching up with Seth Hewitt, brewing supervisor extraordinaire at Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. Fresh off a trip to Ireland, Seth dives into the sensory nuances between Guinness in its home country versus what we get stateside, the mystique behind Guinness' global quality control, and some behind-the-scenes tales from his brewery tours. We also venture into the world of Irish whiskey, exploring Jameson's unique blend of column and pot still techniques, and sample some Tolmore Dew together, picking apart its flavor notes. Seth shares his journey from environmental geology to craft beer, details how geography and terroir influence ingredients, and lets us in on his new passion project—Beer City Bouquets, which merges two worlds by arranging flowers in upcycled beer cans. Seth Hewitt brings a wealth of hands-on brewing experience, creative passion, and a geologist's eye for detail. Starting with a degree in environmental geology from Appalachian State, Seth's curiosity and craftsmanship led him from Volcano research in Africa to homebrewing and then to professional roles at Howard Brewing, Lost Province, and ultimately Sierra Nevada. With nearly a decade at Sierra Nevada, he's shaped beer production, developed new releases, and now blends his love for plants and beverages with his flower-farming side business. Always tinkering, Seth embodies the heart of craft brewing and creative entrepreneurship. “All the breweries around the world are creating just a base beer, like a pale ale beer, as close as they can get to the original…then they use this essence of Guinness that is made all in Ireland and then shipped out.” ~ Seth Hewitt Today on Consuming the Craft:· Guinness brewed in Ireland tastes notably less roasty compared to the American version, influenced by process and possibly local ingredients.· Guinness uses a system of concentrated “essence” produced in Ireland and shipped globally to ensure quality and consistency in foreign markets.· Nigeria is Guinness's second-largest market outside Ireland, influenced by historical and economic factors.· Jameson Irish Whiskey combines both pot still and column still spirits, offering a distinct flavor profile depending on the blend.· Terroir—from soil to water availability—impacts the flavor of base ingredients such as barley, hops, and wood used in barrels and spirits.· Seth leveraged a degree in environmental geology and a lifelong passion for crafting into a brewing career, showing the unexpected pathways into beer.· Beer City Bouquets is Seth's side project, where he crafts flower arrangements using upcycled beer cans, blending his two creative passions.· Craft brewing requires balancing ever-changing agricultural variables to maintain consistency in flagship beers, a true mix of art and science. Tennessee slapped a tire patch in the gaping hole in the rubber of its quarterback situation. UCLA’s disposable goods became the Vols’ prize. Tennessee is expected to add transfer quarterback Joey Aguilar from UCLA, after the Vols lost starter Nico Iamaleava to none other than UCLA. In other words, UCLA decided it would rather anoint Iamaleava as its starter than Aguilar, who transferred in December after two seasons starting for Appalachian State. That caused Aguilar to re-evaluate his options. The best opportunity available just so happened to be at Tennessee. He’ll compete with a pair of young in-house options for the starting job. On today’s episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer and John Adams assign the winners and losers of this whole saga, and they pinpoint where Vols coach Josh Heupel flawed in his execution. Iamaleava’s missteps were numerous and obvious, but Heupel’s handling of the situation was not flawless. They also identify the favorite in Tennessee’s starting quarterback competition. Later in the episode, they examine Oklahoma’s case for being a College Football Playoff sleeper on the heels of the Sooners’ marquee transfer acquisitions.
In this episode, we dive deep into the Tennessee Volunteers' 2025 football season and the impact of Joey Aguilar's addition to the team. Following the unexpected departure of Nico Iamaleava, Tennessee football has found a new quarterback in Aguilar, who comes with a wealth of experience from both Appalachian State and the JUCO levels. We break down what this transfer means for the Vols' offense, how Aguilar fits into Coach Josh Heupel's fast-paced system, and what fans can expect from him on the field. Joey Aguilar has the tools to lead Tennessee in 2025, and in this video, we explore his career stats and what his addition means for 2025. We also take a look at the key matchups in Tennessee's schedule and the unforgivable losses for 2025. Whether you're a die-hard Tennessee Vols fan or just love college football, this video covers everything you need to know about Joey Aguilar's role in shaping Tennessee's season. Stay tuned for insights, analysis, and predictions on how Joey Aguilar's transfer will impact Tennessee's road to the College Football Playoff in 2025.
-UCLA added Joey Aguilar from Appalachian State in the portal, and with the addition of Nico Iamaleava, he's headed into the portal—with a potential destination of Tennessee-If it happens, it will be incredible---would he be the likely starting QB? You can contact me here: rick@theoutdoorbizpodcast.com What Happened: It was the summer of 2017. I was clocking miles like a long-haul trucker, repping campers for a living. My 7-year-old son called me out—said I'd promised to take him to Mount Rushmore. He was right. I'd driven past it more times than I could count, but I'd never stopped. So we hit the road. We camped our way across the country, father and son, a Black duo in a tiny pop-up trailer, parking it beside some seriously decked-out RV setups. We saw the sights, roasted marshmallows, and somewhere near Albuquerque, we spotted something we hadn't seen in thousands of miles: another Black family camping. My son lit up and said, “Hey Daddy! Black people!” That moment stuck. We talked to the family—Kimberly and crew—and she said something that flipped a switch in my brain: “Why don't you change that then?” That “why not you?” hit hard. By the time we were driving up the California coast, the name Black Folks Camp Too was born. Principle: Too often, we wait for permission—permission to belong, to show up, to start something meaningful. But sometimes, it takes seeing the gap with your own eyes, feeling the silence in certain spaces, to realize: you're the one who's supposed to fill it. And in business, just like in the outdoors, if you're only serving the same people the same way… you're gonna miss the fire. The campfire, that is. Transition: Most people think getting more folks into the outdoors is about better gear or cool photos on Instagram. But that's not it. The real challenge is the invitation—and the welcome. And too many companies still don't know why the diversity gap exists, so they don't know how to fix it. That's why a lot of businesses are struggling. Not because there's no market—but because they don't see who they're ignoring. And even when they do? They get hung up on the word Black in the name… instead of focusing on the unity behind the mission. That's why: That's why this episode matters. Earl Hunter isn't just talking about camping—he's talking about culture, connection, and cracking open an industry that's been too exclusive for too long. He's not asking for handouts or kumbayas. He's showing up with data, vision, and a real plan to shift the outdoor industry before it goes broke. Call to Action (PAS style): If you've ever felt like the outdoor world wasn't built for you—or your brand's been stuck serving the same crowd—it's time to tune in. Ignoring the invitation problem won't fix it. But this episode will give you a fresh lens and a fire to take action.
Ever met someone who just makes the room feel right? Someone who can blend into any crowd, be the ultimate teammate or wingperson, and put others at ease while making them better? I'm sure a few names come to mind as you read this. And as you listen to today's episode of the Y-Option podcast with Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Network, presented by our founding partner 76, you'll get that same feeling.Daniel - or “DJ,” as he's known in the industry - is a true master of his craft. As the lead voice on NFL Network during the NFL Draft, a constant presence in football media via his podcast Move The Sticks, and the LA Chargers radio analyst since 2018, DJ thrives in every environment. It makes sense. He was once a dual-threat quarterback who transitioned into media after an injury at Appalachian State set him on a new path. A chance encounter during that time changed his career trajectory, leading him to where he is today.DJ and I go way back - over a decade. We've done annual home-and-home podcasts on Move The Sticks and Y-Option, sharing a passion for football and the people who make the game great. In today's episode, we take a trip down memory lane, break down this year's QB class, and discuss why adversity often leads to success. We also dive into the NFL Draft prospects of Cam Ward, Travis Hunter, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, Tetairoa McMillan, and Ashton Jeanty. Plus, DJ shares powerful insights from 49ers QB Brock Purdy, on the toughness of Justin Herbert, and handicaps the AFC West - aka the Pac-10 from the early 2000s - under Pete Carroll, Chip Kelly, and Jim Harbaugh.I have no doubt you'll enjoy today's conversation and I bet you'll walk away feeling like you just hung out with one of the coolest and most insightful football minds in the game. While DJ is the elite voice of the NFL Draft, what I admire most is his humility, discipline in chasing what truly matters, and ability to elevate those around him. Be sure to catch him and his colleagues live from Green Bay on April 24-26 as the 2025 NFL Draft kicks off on NFL Network. As spring football heats up across the country, there's some big news to report:* Coach Prime's Historic Extension: Deion Sanders has signed a five-year, $54 million extension to stay at Colorado through 2029. While his 13-12 record may not seem extraordinary, his impact is undeniable. He has sparked a national - and even global - resurgence of the Buffs brand. The proof? Colorado's season ticket revenue jumped from $13M in 2022 to $31.2M in 2023, they trend every time he has a press conference and this April the Buffs will, once again, pack Folsom Field for their spring game. Coach Prime continues to redefine what's possible in college football. And I'd imagine he will be in the news a little on NFL Draft night as well.* Syracuse & Colorado Joint Spring Practices Denied: Not surprisingly, the NCAA shut down the idea of Syracuse and Colorado holding joint spring practices. While denied for now, expect the landscape to evolve as we move toward 2026, with more teams looking to collaborate. Jim Thornby and I discuss this during the preamble to my conversation with DJ and make a case for joint practices, just not like you might imagine.* Stanford Makes Big Moves: The Cardinal have named Frank Reich as interim head coach for the 2025 season. Given Stanford's unique recruiting challenges, this hire brings immediate stability. While they could have pursued a long-term solution, GM Andrew Luck likely prioritized continuity, choosing a coach he knows well—Reich coached Luck in 2018 with the Indianapolis Colts. Did they get it right? Let us know @Y-Option on social media as we had a long discussion about this strategy as well on today's podcast.I met Coach Reich at a Super Bowl event a few years ago and he left a lasting impression. I imagine Stanford's roster will feel the same way and I do not anticipate a mass exodus to the portal.Additionally, Stanford hired Alden Mitchell as the interim Athletic Director. Having known Alden for over a decade from our time at the Pac-12 Networks, I can say this: she's competitive, sharp, and fully committed to this role. The next 4 months will shape Stanford's football program for the next 5 years. Their success in adapting to the modern college football landscape hinges on the decisions they make now, and with Andrew Luck steering the ship, I'm optimistic they'll get it right as a good Stanford squad is a great thing for college football. As always, much love to all of you for supporting Y-Option. Enjoy spring ball.Stay steady,YogiThis episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren.This podcast is a Best Coast Media productionY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. FOX Sports' lead College Football analyst Joel Klatt takes a look at teams that have really impressed early in the season: Tennessee, Miami and USC and discusses if the first two weeks have answered the questions he had for them and what they still need to accomplish for fans to know they are for real. He then looks at another 3 teams that have had very different seasons so far and gives his thoughts on how he evaluates them right now: which Clemson is the real one – the one that got blown out by Georgia or the one that hung 66 on Appalachian State? Is Ohio State's running game under Chip Kelly already changing life in Columbus? How concerned should we be about Oregon's two narrow wins this season – are they the National Title contender many envisioned entering the season? Finally, Klatt gives an early look at the Heisman race by ranking his Top 5 through two weeks. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
