This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC! When Dr. John R. Drish took a fatal tumble down the stairs of his Tuscaloosa mansion, his wife, Sarah, was left with little more than grief—and some very fancy funeral candles. But when those cherished candles went missing during Sarah's own funeral, she apparently decided death wouldn't stop her from expressing her disappointment. To this day, visitors report mysterious flames flickering in the tower of the Drish House, a ghostly temper tantrum sparked by the missing candles. Were these flames lit by something supernatural or just a really bad case of phantom fire? We'll explore the story with Matt and Nika McCool, the current keepers of the Drish legacy. The Drish House, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is a former plantation home built by Dr. John R. Drish and his wife, Sarah, in 1837. In 1867, tragedy struck when Dr. Drish unexpectedly passed away in the house, the result of a fatal fall down its steep staircase. His widow, Sarah, outlived him by seventeen years, mourning his loss until her demise in 1884. It is said that Sarah utilized ornate candles for John's funeral and kept them with the intention they would be used for her funeral. When Sarah passed, the candles could not be found. The legend is that Sarah, fueled by fury over this oversight, continues to haunt the Drish House to this day. Not long after Sarah's death, a local resident was alarmed to discover a fire burning in the front tower of the home. They notified firefighters. However, when they arrived, there was no sign of a fire. There are some people alive today who say they have also seen the flames in the tower. Some think it is Sarah's spirit lingering in the tower that set the space ablaze, angered—or disappointed—that her husband's candles had not been burned at her funeral. Is there any truth behind that story? We'll talk about it in this episode of the Grave Talks with owners Matt and Nika McCool. This is Part Two of our conversation. Dr. John R. Drish began construction of one of Tuscaloosa's first plantation homes in 1835. Unfortunately, after he and his wife Sara's deaths, the home fell to ruin; giving life to claims that the tower that looms over this once stately plantation home is often the sight of eerie apparitions.
