Send me a Text Message about the show! The broken rung: a phenomenon even more pervasive than the glass ceiling in holding women back from career success. Women around the world do extremely well when it comes to their education. They graduate at higher rates than men do and have higher average GPAs. But then a strange thing happens: Upon entering the workforce, they immediately lose their advantage. When the first promotions come around, the slide continues—for every 100 men who are promoted to manager, only 81 women get promoted. Women risk falling behind far before they are even tapping the “glass ceiling”.So, what should we do about that?  Especially in a climate where talking about diversity, equity, and inclusion has become the third rail of business development?McKinsey senior partners Kweilin Ellingrud, Lareina Yee, and María del Mar Martínez have written a new book, THE BROKEN RUNG: When the Career Ladder Breaks for Women--and How They Can Succeed in Spite of It.  The book is based on over a decade of McKinsey research, conversations with more than 50 remarkable leaders, and their own experiences as senior partners working with companies and women leaders. Buy the bookKweilin Ellingrud is McKinsey's Chief Diversity Officer and a director of the McKinsey Global Institute, based in Minneapolis. Thank you for all of your support. Please let us know what you think about our podcast and what topic you may want to hear from us. Leaders, Lead Well!A few years back, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) were championed as the remedy for workplace inequities. It aimed to create a future where marginalized voices, justice-impacted individuals, and underrepresented communities could achieve equitable standing in a corporate world historically defined by systemic bias. It did not work that way, not even close.Mandatory diversity training became platforms for personal agendas, and terms like 'equity' became buzzwords used without clear definitions, which made them easy targets for criticism and left employees feeling confused or alienated rather than inspired. CEOs are now halting their DEI initiatives due to years of 'guilt hiring' individuals with civil rights backgrounds instead of those with corporate expertise. The once hottest position in America, Chief Diversity Officer, is now viewed as nothing more than a token position with no real power to make effective organizational change. In short, DEI turned into a barrage of unmet promises, poor communication, and the manipulative weaponization of what was intended to be a unifying concept. So why is DEI now DOA?Join Rich and Maikel as we tackle DEI on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT. Summary: In this episode of Everyday Conversations on Race, Simma Lieberman is joined by Dr. Joe-Joe McManus and Juan Lopez, two individuals who share their experiences and insights into anti-racism and building true, meaningful interracial relationships. The conversation focuses on the importance of talking about race, the difference between being "non-racist" and "anti-racist," and how everyone can take small actions to fight racism. The episode highlights the need for intentional relationships across cultures and races, the significance of sharing personal stories, and the long-term process of working together to advance freedom and dismantle racism. What can you do today to actively challenge racism in your own life? Keep listening to discover how small, intentional actions can make a difference. Show Notes: [00:00] Introduction Simma introduces her guests, Dr. Jojo McManus, an anti-racist educator and diversity and inclusion practitioner, and Juan Lopez, a consultant focused on leadership, organizational development, and DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion). The trio shares their personal connections and the powerful community they're part of, which focuses on building interracial, multicultural, and interfaith communities. [04:30] Why It's Important to Talk About Race Simma asks Jojo and Juan if it's still important to talk about race in a world that sometimes claims we are "post-racial." Jojo and Juan explain how racism is alive and resurging and why ongoing conversations about race and racism are crucial. [08:15] The Founding of Diversity 2000 (D2K) Juan shares how he co-founded the Diversity 2000 (D2K) community in 1993, a group designed to bring diversity professionals together to collaborate rather than compete. This community has grown into a 32-year-long initiative supporting DEI professionals globally. [14:00] The Importance of Real Interactions The discussion turns to the value of truly interacting with people who are different from us, not just having "diverse friends." Jojo and Simma emphasize that building anti-racist habits involves more than just proximity—it requires intentional relationships and actions. [20:30] Jojo's Book: A Brother's Insight Jojo discusses his book, A Brother's Insight: Guidance on Defeating Racism and Advancing Freedom. He shares how the book was inspired by the death of his brother and the powerful lessons he's learned about racism, systemic oppression, and the importance of being actively anti-racist. [26:00] Small Actions Against Racism Jojo and Juan discuss small, intentional actions that can make a difference in fighting racism—like inviting someone different to join your group or calling out racism when you see it. Simma highlights how these actions can become part of your daily life when anti-racism is treated as a core value. [31:00] The Complexity of Racism and Mental Health The conversation touches on how racism impacts mental health, including how internalized racism can affect communities. Jojo talks about how his brother's death, which was influenced by racism, deeply shaped his work in anti-racism. [36:00] The Importance of Self-Care in the Fight Against Racism Simma and her guests discuss the importance of self-care to prevent burnout, especially when doing the long, hard work of anti-racism. Simma shares how she uses Magic Mind, an elixir designed to reduce stress, improve cognition, and support mental health. This episode on incivility at work was soooo welcome. It doesn't matter if you're on the left or the right, it might make you uncomfortable! I love it when this happens! After well over 200 episodes, it's thrilling to be unexpectedly challenged! Sara Taylor has been a DEI expert for a long time. She started her company, deepSEE Consulting in 2002. She has authored two books including, recently, 'Thinking at the Speed of Bias'. She has been a Chief Diversity Officer. She was on my panel discussion around DEI. So, in light of these facts, you might think she would blindly advocate for any DEI perspective, but you would be wrong! We all have biases. Every single one of us. Whether we're white, black, asian, gay, straight... etc. We all know it's true, it's just that some people with biases have power. Sara also said: 2️⃣ Most of the incivility that HR is dragged into have to do with people in the second stage of culture competence.

These values have shaped his career and life's work. From being the first Chief Diversity Officer at Abercrombie & Fitch to his current role as Senior Vice President of Inclusion, Sustainability, and Community at Carhartt, Todd's leadership has always been about more than checking boxes — it's about creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and empowered to succeed. Whether he was working in retail at Abercrombie, with Black farmers through his work with the USDA, or in hospitality at a multinational hotel brand building brands "betting right" for Todd meant understanding that the work was bigger than him—it was about the societal connectedness that he wanted to be part of. Why Black-Founded Brands are "Quietly Closing" in 2024 with Oui the People Founder Karen Young

Your favorite Black-owned brand may quietly close this year — that's what Oui the People founder Karen Young shared with her followers a few weeks ago. In 2020, the beauty industry underwent a revolution of sorts. Black-owned brands became a much-needed albeit long overdue priority. Movements like Pull Up For Change encouraged brands to share what percentage of their business employed Black workers, and many brands whose focus specifically highlighted Black skin were launched, supported and celebrated. However, in the last year, we've seen a wave of hurdles coming for Black-owned businesses and DEI initiatives. We're seeing it in other industries as well: top Chief Diversity Officers at top entertainment companies were said to be “leaving their jobs” last year in a Wall Street Journal story titled “The Rise and Fall of the Chief Diversity Officer.” It was recently reported that thirteen lune, a retailer that highlights minority-owned brands, owed thousands of dollars to brands under its umbrella and their partner JC Penney was restructuring the partnership as a result. And the Fearless Fund, the Black women-owned venture capital firm backing early-stage businesses owned by women of color, including the beauty and wellness brands like Brown Girl Jane, Live Tinted, Bread Beauty Supply and more was indefinitely barred from deploying a program last year that doles out $20,000 grants to Black female entrepreneurs. Karen joins us to share what Black founders are up against and what we can do to help support some of our favorite brands.Shop this episodeWatch our episodes!GlossAngelesPod.comCALL or TEXT US: 424-341-0426Join our Slack to try new products before they launchJoin our FB GroupInstagram: @glossangelspod, @kirbiejohnson, @saratanTwitter: @glossangelespod, @kirbiejohnson, @saratanEmail: glossangelespodcast@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. Dalila oversees all Diversity, Equity & Inclusion initiatives and philanthropic strategy with a focus on advancing digital equity and economic mobility through Project UP, which is supported by a $1 billion commitment. In 2023, Dalila was honored as WICT Woman of the Year in recognition of her work developing women leaders who transform the media, entertainment and technology industry. She has been named one of the “Most Powerful Women in Cable” by Cablefax Magazine; one of the “Most Powerful Women in Business” by Black Enterprise; and an “Innovative Rising Star: Building Communities” by Forbes magazine among other honors. In this episode, we discuss: ●     The importance of data and transparency in DEI ●     3 key lessons for running a Foundation ●     Looking at diversity through a holistic business lens to include employees, suppliers, customers, and product creation Key Takeaways: ●     Diversity: It's Not Just Business, It's Human: I'm done debating the business case for diversity—it's crystal clear, yet it hasn't solved the leadership imbalance. Let's focus on the human case. Look around the C-suites of S&P 100 companies: 70% of executives are white men, while they make up only 30% of the US population. Despite progress in diversifying executive teams over the past decade, these numbers don't lie. Our system is still broken. It's past time to fix a system that continues to perpetuate unfairness and bias, not just because diversity is proven to be good for business, but because it's the right thing to do. Let's not hide the need for fairness, justice, and ethics behind a business case. ●     Building Solutions Through Continuous Listening: Listening to the people you aim to serve is crucial, and it's not a one-time act—it's an ongoing practice. This dialogue informs how programs need to evolve to meet changing needs. When you continuously listen and adapt, you build solutions that resonate and have lasting impact. It's about creating a dynamic partnership with those you serve. ●     The Importance of Community: The power of community cannot be overstated. We know the phrase “it takes a village”. This principle extends across all areas of life. Small businesses supported by their communities are more likely to succeed. Families with community support are more likely to thrive. Individuals who feel part of a work community are more likely to flourish. Humans are social creatures; we struggle in isolation but thrive when we come together. Building and nurturing community bonds is key to collective success and well-being.
