Dr. Donald Abrams was a young gay doctor on the front lines of San Francisco's AIDS crisis in the 1980s. He watched as his partner and many of his close friends died from a disease no one understood. Yet instead of giving up, he fought to bring relief to patients through medical cannabis. In part two of our Webby Award nominated three-part series, host Ellen Scanlon introduces you to Dr. Abrams, who shares his experience with loss, injustice, and resilience that led him to challenge the federal government, support legendary activists like Brownie Mary, and secure the first U.S. government grant to study cannabis for medical use. In this episode, you'll learn: How the AIDS crisis helped ignite the medical cannabis movement Why San Francisco became ground zero for radical, compassionate care What it took to convince the U.S. government to approve a cannabis study This is one of the most powerful stories we've ever told. Don't miss it. A 13-year-old boy has been charged in last month's fatal shooting of Daoud Marji in the Bronx. U.S. Marshals have arrested a man wanted for beating and robbing an off-duty NYPD officer. Meanwhile, Mayor Eric Adams is urging undocumented families not to withdraw students from school after ICE detained a Venezuelan teen at a court hearing. Plus, Brooklyn's Dumbo Drop returns with flying toy elephants and street festivities. And community leaders are remembering former Congressman Charles Rangel, who represented Harlem for more than four decades.
For the first time ever, data shows that more women are choosing cannabis than men—and they're doing it for reasons that go way beyond getting high. In this episode, host Ellen Scanlon talks with innovation expert Nicole Brown about what's really driving this shift: from the rise of low-dose products to the evolution of legal markets like New York. We dig into how Gen Z and Millennial women are swapping drinks for edibles, why sleep is still the most common entry point, and how today's “work hard, play hard” mindset is getting a major update. Cannabis is no longer a niche choice, it's becoming a modern, smarter way to unwind. In this episode, you'll learn: What's really behind the cannabis boom among womenWhy so many women start with sleep, and stay for better sexHow cannabis is replacing cocktails for younger womenWhy this shift is changing the culture (and who gets to shape i Hosted by Ellen Scanlon Sign up for Ellen's newsletter on Substack at https://dothepot.substack.com/ or at dothepot.com Follow on IG: @dothepot / FB: @dothepot / X: @dothepot Support for the show comes from 1906. In this episode, Michael Zaytsev (aka Professor Z) sits down with Peter Barsoom, CEO and Co-Founder of 1906, to talk about the next wave of cannabis consumption. From fast-acting edibles to THC beverage innovation, Peter shares how 1906 is meeting the demands of modern wellness culture, without the weed hangover. After a career leading strategy at American Express, Morgan Stanley, and Merrill Lynch, Peter left finance in 2015 to pursue a bold vision: make cannabis functional, fast-acting, and part of daily wellness rituals. Today, 1906 is a leader in precision-dosed, effect-driven cannabis products sold in dispensaries and online. Its latest product, Off Duty, is a discreet, sugar-free, unflavored THC+CBD beverage additive designed for the post-alcohol and sober-curious consumer. As New Frontier Data reports, 51% of cannabis consumers have already tried an infused beverage, and 41% of consumers under 40 express strong interest in this category. 1906 is leaning into that demand and building the future of functional cannabis one drink at a time. On this episode of the Openwork podcast, we look at luxury pricing. Of course, we've already done a deep dive on how watches are priced. (Check out our episode with Mike Margolis of Czapek and Singer Reimagined for that.) However, in the past, we've largely focused on how inputs like cost of labor, materials, inflation and currency exchange impact pricing. But there's of course more that goes into pricing for watches and luxury goods more broadly. There are considerations like brand value, product positioning as well as consumer psychology that also impact pricing. And that's what we explore today – those other more nebulous, but equally significant, inputs into pricing. To help us with that we have the perfect guest: Katharine K. Zarrella is a writer, editor, and the Fashion Critic-at-Large at Document Journal. With a background as Fashion Director at the Wall Street Journal's Off Duty section and as a lecturer at Parsons School of Design and Central Saint Martins, she has contributed to numerous renowned publications, including Harper's Bazaar, The Business of Fashion, and most recently The New York Times, where she recently published the guest essay: Obscene Prices, Declining Quality: Luxury Is in a Death Spiral. Hosted by Asher Rapkin and Gabe Reilly, co-founders of Collective Horology, Openwork goes inside the watch industry. You can find us online at collectivehorology.com.
