If you can't figure out how to play Joe Bonamassa's solo from “Blues Deluxe,” don't worry. It all changes when Shifty sits down with Bonamassa for this special episode of Shred With Shifty. No surprise that both of them reach for their Les Pauls, and Bonamassa even reveals why he switched from Strats to Gibsons in the early 2000s. Bonamassa is known for his dazzling collection of vintage guitars—which he says has become a target for haters—but he explains that you don't need a '58 Les Paul to get the goods. “It's also the mystique,” he says. “If Jimmy Page played a Tokai, everyone would want a Tokai.” A guitar made two weeks ago, he says, is just as good as a classic. Bonamassa's lightning-quick soloing style, which conjures a hurricane of major and minor pentatonic notes with some phrygian flair, is the stuff of legend, and his tricks on “Blues Deluxe” are plenty. Even though he tries to adhere to a “divide by two” rule to simplify his phrasings, he still stumps Shiflett with a volume swell trick he learned from Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton. This solo is no walk in the park. Any brave takers up for giving it a shot? Share it and tag us so Shifty can have a look! Most importantly, remember to have fun. “Do whatever you want with the damn thing,” says Bonamassa. “It's just a guitar.” Click below to subscribe to the podcast! It's been 11 years since Kenny Wayne Shepherd filmed his previous Rig Rundown. PG's John Bohlinger caught up with the blues-rocker before his recent sold-out show at Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium to hear some killer playing and see some untouchable—by anyone but Kenny and his tech—gear. The tour stop was supporting the December 2022 release of Trouble Is … 25, a re-recording of his 1997 breakthrough album, which had four top 10 hits when it was originally issued: “Slow Ride,” “Somehow, Somewhere, Someway,” “Everything is Broken,” and “Blue on Black.” There have been seven other studio recordings since then, and while he's still mostly a Strat player, some other instruments have joined his armada, too. And Dumbles … he has lots of Dumbles.Brought to you by D'Addario XS Strings.
Hi friends - who's ready for a rambling beefer? This week Dave and Hank got some new pedals and built some new rigs, dusted off some cobwebs on some old tunes, and even created hate rigs for each other! Also discussed: PTD Vintage, Mojotone partnering with Fender, Dumbles, Peavey tiger guitars, Bob Dylan apologies, Fender Fedoras, Hello Kitty Strats, Chaos Audio in space, and Rumble.Jazz Bass on a hat.
10:19 We Dip Chris Shiflett's Rig! 25:00 Zach's New Pedal 28:29 Joe Bonamassa Live from Nerdville Big thanks to StewMac for sponsoring this episode. Head to http://stewmac.com/dippedintone (http://stewmac.com/dippedintone) to get 10% off! Go see Joe's Dumbles in person: https://jbonamassa.com/tour-dates/ (https://jbonamassa.com/tour-dates/) Dipped In Tone begins its partnership with Premier Guitar with Rhett Shull and Zack Broyles visiting Joe Bonamassa in Nerdville East, his Nashville home and museum. They talk vintage gear, guitar obsession, innovation versus tradition, and Dumbles. Many Dumbles … including a rare—even among these ultra-rare custom-built amps—example with a DI port for acoustic guitar made for the late songwriter Hoyt Axton. Bonamassa also explains his philosophy about taking guitars worth hundreds of thousands of dollars on the road and to local gigs, and what the future holds in store for his collection of 500 instruments—every one with a story. Also, our hosts “dip” Chris Shiflett's rig, offering the Foo Fighters guitarist a few “pointers” on rebuilding his massive pedalboard while ogling his refinished 1957 Les Paul and his custom-built Telecaster called “the Cleaver.” But before they dive deep, Schull shows off his recently acquired 1989 R9 Les Paul from Norm's Rare Guitars, and Broyles shows off the new super-Muff style Positron Cascading Amplifier Distortion. This week we talk a bit about Dumble amps, and I'm sure I got a couple of time lines wrong. We also discuss the pros and cons of amp simulators. We've also introduced the string challenge where you, the listener get to tell us what strings are best. There will be a prize at the end, but this will last for months, so lets hope the prize is worth it. We're going to put 4 string manufacturers and brands to the test: Ernie Ball Super Slinky, D'Addario NYXL, Stringjoy (custom), and The Gabriel Tenorio String Company (custom). Over the next few months, we'll be putting up sound bites on the group Facebook page and challenging you to provide honest input. You won't know what string we're playing and we won't know the strings that the other host is playing. We are not allowing subjectivity to be involved, so the strings will be measured equally on their sound. While we may rate them in our views of feel, response, etc., those views will be on a scale; but you will be able to tell us how you feel about the tone. Good luck! https://www.ernieball.com/guitar-strings/electric-guitar-strings/slinky-nickel-wound-electric-guitar-strings http://www.daddario.com/DADProductFamily.Page?ActiveID=3768&familyid=74&sid=4de6a062-7015-4ff3-bec5-e7ea9ac5b80b https://www.stringjoy.com/ https://www.thegts.co/electric-guitar/
