We forced local mainstream media outlets to cover the announcement that 3 Doors Down leads singer Brad Arnold has stage 4 cancer because they were set to completely ignore until we called them out on this show and online. This topic led to me explaining how and why this platform not only exist but thrives because local media refuses to cover stories people actually care about and refuse to cater to the conservative majority in central Mississippi while pandering to the minority and hiring out of state talent that use us as a stepping stone to bigger markets.

The season is speeding by, and July is turning into August with a couple of notable shows from some of our favorite rockers. Creed is in the midst of its first concert tour in 12 years, which, among other things, is marking the 25th anniversary of its multi-platinum sophomore album Human Clay. Creed performs with 3 Doors Down and Finger Eleven on Wednesday, July 31. Sammy Hagar brings his The Best of All Worlds Tour to Pine Knob on Friday, August 2. Plus Melissa Etheridge shares her many memories about playing Pine Knob, from opening for Bruce Hornsby to her own headlining shows. Finally, we thought we'd remember a particularly historic show. It was Talking Heads final appearance in the metro area, on August 11, 1983.
James Black from Finger Eleven joins A-SIDES for a huge discussion on collecting vinyl records, 007 movie scores, creating a song for 2003's Daredevil movie, marrying visual art with music, and more! One of the biggest tours of Summer 2024 is the return of Creed, along with Finger Eleven and 3 Doors Down as opening acts. You can follow along with Finger Eleven through their tour dates at their website. Huge thanks to James for taking time to chat before the band embarks on this huge summer tour. Thanks for listening to Episode 164 of A-SIDES!

My guests this week are Matt Wallace and Will Kennedy, the Grammy-winning immersive mixing team that has done spatial mixes for Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, The B-52s, Kid Rock, Selena Gomez and many more. Before entering into the spatial mixing world, Matt's work as a producer includes hits for Maroon 5, Faith No More, The Replacements, 3 Doors Down and O.A.R., while Will's credits includes One Republic, O.A.R, U2, Michael Franti and Spearhead and others. Matt and Will set up their Dolby-certified mixing studio in the same complex as the legendary Sound City Studio in 2021 and haven't looked back. During our interview Will and Matt talked about why analog recording experience is so valuable, the track that changed their perception of immersive audio, transitioning their studio to spatial mixing only, why rock is the hardest to mix in spatial audio, tag-team mixing, and so much more. I spoke with Matt and Will via zoom from their studio in Van Nuys, California.

Great time on the Podcast with Justin, your everyday humble down to earth Rock Star! Love this guy... Justin Biltonen blurs the lines between ‘what you see is what you get' and ‘still waters run deep.' Southern born and bred, Biltonen is a product of broken-in boots and 90s bests.Baptized by an adoration for country, rock, punk and hardcore, Justin went from singing in hometown worship groups to traveling the nation playing southern-fried rock n' roll. Fueled by uncompromising passion and a gypsy soul, Biltonen became a self proclaimed highway-runner. It was on those endless, late night drives that he conjured up the soundtrack from his youth-- a mixtape filled with Drive By Truckers, Waylon and Shooter Jennings, Brooks and Dunn, Shenandoah and countless others, which ultimately reignited his love of country music. Not long after, Justin proved that all roads really do lead to Nashville, TN. Immersing himself in Music City's one of a kind songwriting community, Biltonen continued to refine his craft and establish himself as a force within the industry. Eventually, Justin Biltonen became a name to know as the bassist for alt-rock tastemakers 3 Doors Down. Touring globally as a member of one of the genre's most timeless bands, Justin was able to support numerous chart topping albums, including Us And The Night, which peaked at #2 on Billboard's Rock Chart. A career changing moment for Justin Biltonen, Us And The Night was the first major release he both wrote and played on in-studio. Having earned the courage and credentials, Justin began indulging his longtime love of country music and officially announced his solo project with the singles “Use You” and “How A Man's Made.” Biltonen marked his terrestrial radio debut with the follow-up single “She's Got the Highway”, which he credits with solidifying his stance as a member of the country music community. From playing bars and basements to global tours and the Presidential Inauguration, the North Carolina native owes his success to nothing more than his sincere, unwavering respect for music.“Whether I'm doing my own thing or touring with the band, thriving through the ups and downs in the name of the music is always going to matter more than anything else.” Humbled by his own experience, Justin is currently celebrating the release of his single “Forever Tonight” as well as “Someday Cowgirl” and “Working Thang” Having already achieved career milestones across streaming platforms and country radio alike, “Heartache Rodeo” has been featured in the film “Shelter In Solitude” as well as upcoming documentaries. .
