The Cars' self-titled 1978 debut record changed the world of power pop forever. Guitarist and co-vocalist Ric Ocasek penned all the tunes, but lead guitarist Elliott Easton transformed them with his tasteful 6-string stylings. This time on Shred With Shifty, Easton sits down with Chris Shiflett to show him how to play the solo from “My Best Friend's Girl.” Born in Brooklyn before winding up in Long Island, Easton washed dishes to save up for his first 1971 Fender Telecaster, and after high school he studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he picked up key theory and technique that he still holds dear. Reared on country and rockabilly players like Roy Buchanan, Jesse Ed Davis, Gram Parsons, James Burton, and Roy Nichols, Easton brought a slick twang to Ocasek's new-wave gems. Easton tells Shifty how the band came to work with producer Roy Thomas Baker in London, while crashing at a label-provided mansion nearby and driving a loaned Jaguar and Land Rover to the sessions. Easton's celebrated leads didn't take long to come together. “On my mother's memory, I did all my guitar parts in a day and a half,” he says. All he had with him was a 1978 or '77 Telecaster with a Bartolini Firebird-style mini humbucker in it, a red Les Paul, a Martin acoustic, and two effects: the brand-new Boss CE-1 and a Morley EVO-1 Echo Volume pedal. His amp of choice in those days? An Ampeg VT-22 or VT-40. We open the show with better than expected CPI for the month of March. John Bolton makes a dolt of himself as he suggests Trump is economically illiterate less than 24 hours before the single-biggest jump in the stock market in recent history. Sen. Adam Schiff (in his pants) (D-CA), in a three day period, managed to go from being angry at Trump over tariffs to being angry at Trump for pausing the tariffs. We also remember Sen. Chuck “You” Schumer (D-NY) loved Trump 45's tariff's on China. President Trump revealed the strategy yesterday, getting China to walk into a trap while showing the rest of the world he is open to fair trade negotiations. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirms the strategy and later reminds us that Trump is focused on Main Street, not just Wall Street. In the meantime, Ambassador Greene, as trade representative to Congress, has to listen to an unhinged and emotional mean-girl Beta-male in the form of Rep. Steven Horsford (D-NV) screech for 5 minutes. Surprisingly, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) says she understand the Trump tariff plan and agrees we need more industry here in the United States. On the flipside, in desperation to find a way to paint the positive jump in the DOW as a bad thing, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) thinks it's an example of insider trading. Batya Ungar-Sargon reminds us that Trump is the one fighting for the middle class and middle America. In Congress, only 4 Democrats voted for the SAVE Act. This bill makes it the law that voters need to have proof of U.S. Citizenship to vote in federal elections. The View's Sunny Hostin demonstrates the view of the Left with their soft bigotry of low expectations. An Op-Ed in USAToday says we have tariffs underway, but Congress needs to get on tax cuts and cuts in regulation. To get them started, Trump just signed an order to make sure all departments are ignoring any unlawful regulations. Finally, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth made an announcement in Panama. From Ozzy Osbourne to Black Label Society to Zakk Sabbath to, most recently, his stint filling in for his old friend “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott in Pantera, Zakk Wylde has left an unmistakable mark on the hard-rock and metal music worlds. Fresh off performing “The Star Spangled Banner” at the Cleveland Browns game in October, and paying homage to his boss Ozzy at the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Wylde joins this episode of Shred With Shifty to share his teachings from the book of rock. When he was learning to play, Wylde studied Frank Marino, Al Di Meola, and John McLaughlin along with Sabbath shredder Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page, and “King Edward”—Eddie Van Halen—but Osbourne's original right-hand guitar-man Randy Rhoades was top of the crop. Little did Wylde know he'd go on to replace him after his tragic death, following up the work of Rhoades, Brad Gillis, and Jake E. Lee. He got to join his favorite band, but it wasn't an easy gig. “What's expected of you as an Ozzy player?” says Wylde. “The bar that Randy set was lights out.” After a quick pinch-harmonics tutorial, Wylde lays out how he used a Marshall JCM800 and Boss SD-1 with his “holy grail” bullseye Gibson Les Paul Custom to track the alternate-picking intensive on “Miracle Man,” a mix of “ingredients” from all the players Wylde loves. (“Pass the Ritchie Blackmore, boss!”) For those thinking of skimping and swapping in some hammer-ons and pull-offs, Shifty warns: “There are no shortcuts! Pick every note!” Along the way, Wylde discusses the inner workings of his tenure with Osbourne, including being the longest-running player in the group—like “working at the deli,” according to Wylde. [SEGMENT 1-1] Pardons 1 - Schiff Democrats are jumping ship, running for the hills, scurrying down their rat holes. For a group that acts so holier than thou, they sure seem scared. Welcome… If I haven't done anything wrong, I'm cool as a polar bears butt.   Does anybody really believe that Adam Schiff doesn't want a preemptive pardon? That's what he claims, and that's what he said. But he didn't say he doesn't want a pardon—he just doesn't want a preemptive one. That's like saying, “I'm not going to eat the cake right now… but leave it on the counter. Just in case.”  [SEGMENT 1-2] Pardons 2 -Schiff Schiff conveniently leaked this morsel during an interview with George Stephanopoulos, another maestro of moral posturing. Stephanopoulos—whose journalistic credibility is rivaled only by his ability to sidestep Clinton-era scandals—asked Schiff if he thought Trump might prosecute members of the Jan. 6 committee. “We don't need pardons because we're proud of our work.” Schiff replied. Oh, really? Proud of the committee's work? Work that included hiding exculpatory evidence, cherry-picking videos, and pushing a narrative so flimsy it makes Biden's staircase skills look stable? Schiff has claimed that pardons set a bad precedent. And well, Shifty can't have his reputation impugned with the specter of a pardon. Who could blame him though for not wanting a pardon from Biden. That's one complete list of scoundrels. Clearly, Shifty wants us to know that he's got principles. He likes his pardon served fresh, not pre-packaged. The Benny Hill Moment Here's where the comedy ramps up. While Schiff was pretending to be the virtuous hero of this melodrama, Rep. Bennie Thompson, the former Jan. 6 committee chair, was busy saying, “Sure, I'd take a preemptive pardon!” He even called it Biden's prerogative. Prerogative? Sure. But the moment you accept a pardon, you're basically hanging a neon “I'm guilty” sign around your neck. This brings us to Adam Kinzinger, Schiff's ex-committee buddy, who once declared, “The only reason I know to ask for a pardon is you think you committed a crime.” [X] SB – Kinzinger on pardons Adam Kinzinger in 2022: “The only reason to ask for a pardon is because you think you've committed a crime.” https://t.co/0R5WDrIu0c — Natalie Winters (@nataliegwinters) https://twitter.com/nataliegwinters/status/1867550759325253899?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw   Kinzinger's words aged like a room-temperature tuna sandwich. Maybe these two need to get with Bennie Johnson before they lock in their final answers. The Insurrection That Wasn't Let's not forget why Schiff and his crew are squirming in the first place. The Jan. 6 narrative was their crown jewel—a supposed coup attempt that turned out to be more of a Capitol-themed field trip. When the footage finally emerged, it didn't show rampaging hordes. Instead, we watched patriots meandering through the Capital as if it were The Louvre. One guy even stopped to straighten some papers. That's the Left's big insurrection, that they compared to the Civil War and the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. They called Trump treasonous in his non-actions. Schiff's Private Pardon Chat with Biden While Schiff claims he doesn't need a pardon, he spoke with Biden for exactly that reason. The two discussed J6, because Joe Biden is planning to pardon the entire committee. Because they are guilty.  Why would Stephanopoulos even broach the subject, if this weren't a reasonable consideration.  The January 6 Committee was a total farce. The people selectively chosen. Instead, the list reads more like a casting call for the next season of Narcos—drug traffickers, cartel associates, and financial fraudsters were all given an early Christmas gift. If Biden's clemency roster were a party, you'd better wear a bulletproof vest.Biden's “Hall of Shame” Pardons: The Hypocrisy Chronicles   Who are they? Various state-level and federal officials involved in bribery, fraud, and general misuse of office. Who are they? Financial criminals who engaged in insider trading or hedge fund mismanagement, causing economic ripples.   Francesk Shkambi: The Albanian Cocaine Kingpin- Backstory: Convicted in 2014 for running a criminal enterprise that trafficked massive quantities of cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and Ecstasy across continents. This wasn't a small-time operation; Shkambi was arranging shipments from Mexico to Europe and everywhere in between.- Clemency Twist: Set https://casetext.com/case/united-states-v-shkambi-7 in 2029, Biden decided Shkambi deserved a six-year head start on his freedom.- Irony Meter: Biden promised transparency, yet pardoned a man with international drug-trafficking ties. Former drug offenders turned advocates for reform who have, in some cases, exploited loopholes to sell unregulated products under “wellness” branding.- Why it's controversial: While their clemency reflects Biden's softer approach to drugs, critics wonder if these gestures are meant to whitewash his role in passing the 1994 Crime Bill.- Irony Meter: Medium. Biden's old slogan was “Tough on crime.” But not if it involves drugs his son uses routinely.  Jose Valdez: The Highway Drug Mogul- Backstory: From 2015 to 2016, Valdez coordinated the distribution of large-scale cocaine and marijuana shipments across the U.S., recruiting accomplices like a college frat president recruiting for rush week. The Biden family's social circle looks like a rogues' gallery of bad decisions. Between Hunter's laptop escapades and James Biden's dubious deals, it's as if the Bidens have been preparing for their own Godfather reboot. Biden's pardon pen seems to cater to his brand: shady characters and questionable business ventures. Remember, none of the Biden family ventures turned a profit. Even their “friends” seem to wind up in prison—or worse, working as political consultants.   Meera Sach: Diluted Chemo Doctor Biden commuted the prison sentence of Meera Sachdeva, a cancer doctor who gave diluted chemo drugs to patients as part of an $8 million Medicare fraud. But Sachdeva didn't stop there. She also re-used old needles, leading to a lawsuit by a patient who claimed he contracted HIV. The list of scoundrels didn't stop there. Check out this next character. Mark Ciavarella: The Kids-for-Cash Judge The most egregious hypothetical pardon would be Mark Ciavarella, the disgraced Pennsylvania judge who took bribes to send juveniles to for-profit detention centers. While he hasn't received clemency (yet), it wouldn't be a shocker. After all, Biden pardoned individuals convicted of crimes against children. The irony here is thicker than Hunter's laptop encryption. Pardoning him would be like nominating the Kermit Gosnell for a humanitarian award. Irony Meter: Through the roof. A president who talks about “protecting the children” yet opens the gates for their abuser? Schenker was just 11 when he played his first gig with The Scorpions, and recorded on their debut LP, Lonesome Crow, when he was 16. He's been playing a Gibson Flying V since those early days, so it's only natural that both he and Shifty bust out the Vs for this occasion. While gigging with Scorpions in Germany, Schenker met and was poached by British rockers UFO, with whom he recorded five studio records and one live release. (Schenker's new record, released on September 20, celebrates this pivotal era with reworkings of the material from these albums with a cavalcade of high-profile guests like Axl Rose, Slash, Dee Snider, Adrian Vandenberg, and more.) On 1978's Obsession, his last studio full-length with the band, Schenker cut the solo on “Only You Can Rock Me,” which Shifty thinks carries some of the greatest rock guitar tone of all time. Schenker details his approach to his other solos, but note-for-note recall isn't always in the cards—he plays from a place of deep expression, which he says makes it difficult to replicate his leads.
