Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!Back in Season 1, we talked at length about Warren Zevon, one of the great American songwriters and one of our idols.  So, this year Warren Zevon has been inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame, along with Bad Company and Cyndi Lauper, and we thought that was a perfect excuse to close the loop on our coverage of his career.  It's all here – his later career, final album, appearances on Letterman.  We loved doing it, and we know that you will love listening to this one! Our “Album You Must Listen to Before You Die” is John Lennon's 1980 hit, “Imagine”.  As usual with Lennon's solo albums, it's more (and less) than it seems on the face of it, containing some of Lennon's best work along with some filler.  But, hey, it's a strong album and gave Roxy Music their worst-ever cover (FYI - “Jealous Guy”). We also venture into the world of ChatGPT to find out the Best Albums of 1972.  Fairly strong list – Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Lou Reed and..............................Wishbone Ash!  Who?    References – Globite Travel Bag, Warren Zevon, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, “The Wind”, Zach Starkey, The Who, Bad Company, Paul Rodgers, Cyndi Lauper, Jordon Zevon, CHAT GPT, 1972, Letterman, alcoholism, Rolling Stone magazine, Jann Wenner, Zevon Live in Australia, The Bridge Hotel, St Mary's Band Club, The Hilton Sydney, Little River Band, Linda Ronstadt, pleural mesothelioma, Enjoy Every Sandwich, “Sentimental Hygiene”, Neil Young, “Detox Mansion”, “Splendid Isolation”, “Heartache Spoken Here”, “Searching For a Heart”, “The Indifference of Heaven”, Life'll Kill Ya, My Ride's Here, “Hit Somebody”, Tony Levin, “Basket Case”, Carl Hiassen, “Bad Monkey”, “The Wind”, Crystal Zevon, Springsteen, “Knockin' on Heaven's Door”, Dylan, Grammy Award,  “Keep Me in Your Heart", “Enjoy Every Sandwich”, Jackson Browne, Billy Bob Thornton, David Lindley and Ry Cooder, Pixies, Jorge Calderón  Playlist – Music from the episode Enjoy every sandwich The Wind

From a song about dirty little religions to a song about Joanie the Jehovah Witness Stripper, we'll be going all out from up and down with genre celebrations from the past century where music reflects the inspiration from church on Sunday mornings following the barroom sinners of Saturday night. This week's Deeper Roots takes a bit of a free form shuffle featuring Bo Diddley, The Ramones, Johnny Mercer, and a whole host of rhythm makers. Performances this morning will span some covers from Chris Smither, David Lindley and an answer song from Barbara Lewis. KOWS radio wants to thank all of you who came out to the Comedy fundraiser at Barrel Proof Lounge last week. It was a great success for us and also a validation of community radio here in the North Bay. KOWS is free form, free speech, no bull community radio; just the kind of thing we need in a country gone mad with lies, deceit and hate. There is always hope. Tune into your radio voice, any time of the day or night. We'll always welcome you.!

Last Man Standing, Cooder's last collaboration with Walter Hill, was a remake of a Japanese classic, 1961's Yojimbo. Hill and Cooder let loose once again, creating a dark, nihilistic action film starring Bruce Willis as the man with no name. Though very unconventional and focused almost exclusively on atmosphere, Cooder's score is surprisingly diverse and varied. - In this episode we also talk about the 1995 Family Tour with David Lindley and Cooder's session work in the mid-90s.This podcast frequently uses small snippets of musical recordings in podcast episodes for educational, review, and commentary purposes. In this episode we tell the story of Little Village, a band that existed for a short time in 1991-92. It consisted of Ry Cooder, John Hiatt, Jim Keltner and Nick Lowe, who had played together on Hiatt's album Bring The Family a few years earlier. Together they made another great album, but one that sounded different for a number of reasons. It wasn't a real hit, but it wasn't a disappointment either, just another ingenious effort from four very special musicians. “Songs for Drella”, Lou Reed & John Cale's marvelous 1990 posthumous tribute to Andy Warhol, offers an intensely personal view of Warhol with songs and playing that rank among the finest in either man's career. Their first collaboration since The Velvet Underground, nearly 20 years earlier, led to both artists vowing never to work with the other again. Our album today, suggested by listener Nick Farmer, is “El-Rayo-X" (1981) by multi-instrumentalist David Lindley. We hadn't come across this album before, and we both agree it's a lot of fun - mainly reggae-influenced beat, but clearly Californian.   Lindley sounds familiar, probably because of his presence on albums by so many others we love – Warren Zevon, Jackson Browne and Linda Ronstadt to name but a few. In the segment, Lunacy, Legends and Lies we look at how Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi only stopped setting drummer Bill Ward on fire after Bill's mum called Tony a "barmy bastard" who should "grow up", and recount how, in 1989, Slash ran naked and bleeding through a resort hotel after a hallucination.  This episode has lots of stuff you may not have known before, and isn't that the fun of it? References:  The Factory, Banksy, Bowie, “Andy Warhol”, “15 minutes of fame”, Metallica, Master of Puppets, Stone Temple Pilots, MTV Unplugged, Valerie Solanis, Nico, “Waiting for the Man”, White Light/White Heat, “Words for the Dying“, Dylan Thomas, “New York”, The Church of St. Anne's Brooklyn, “Berlin”, Czechoslovakia, viola, “Fragments of a Rainy Season”, “Hallelujah”  Our email: MickandthePhatman@Gmail.com  Songs for Drella – Album El-Rayo-x – David Lindley Werewolves of London - David Lindley; Late Night with Jules Holland Song for Drella – The Movie Fragments of a Rainy Season – John Cale Nobody Like You VideoInterview Part 2

February 1974, Baton Rouge. Near the entrance to Louisiana State University. A record store, my favorite hang out. Leisure Landing. I enter the store and a record is playing. It's alt-country. Weird. Because the guy's name is Ian Matthews. Ian isn't a southern United States name. I grab the album cover and begin to read the back. Two players who I already admire are on this record. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter of Steely Dan fame and David Lindley of Jackson Browne fame. I love both of these guys. I'm enjoying this record. Ian is an Englishman playing alternative country, folksy tunes. Some days you eat the bear... Some days the bear eats you. I've never heard this artist before. I've never heard this phrase before either. But I'm street smart and quickly discern it means, "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose." That's today's show. A new episode from inside The Yellow Studio 4.0. Enjoy! David Lindley was one of a kind - The ultimate sideman.  “The Prince of Polyester” played a mind-boggling array of exotic stringed instruments and musical genres with swing and inventiveness. One of the pillars of the Southern California folk-rock sound that dominated the airwaves in the 70s, this Sancho Panza to the dueling Quixotes of Jackson Browne and Ry Cooder was founder of the legendary 1960s world music pioneers Kaleidoscope, and deeply beloved. When he went solo I guess it was too hard to pin him down commercially. For example, this satirical Hawaiian Slack-Key pastiche is one of several styles covered in his “Very Greasy” album - which also includes a cover of the Temptations Papa Was A Rollin' Stone and Bobby Freeman's Do You Wanna Dance (in a Ska rhythm). It's a brilliant evocation of a drunken, middle-class, luau themed office party. He was a humble genius, I suspect. When my wife went to see him in Santa Monica I asked her to have him sign my Kaleidoscope CD. She told me that when he saw it he was touched, remarking that he was surprised that anybody still listened to it. On the contrary, it remains a precious reminder of a musical giant who once bestrode the earth.

Remembering David Lindley. Welcome to the Martins & More Podcast with Spoon Phillips. On today's episode, we pay homage to one of our biggest musical influences - David Lindley. Mr Dave, as he was sometimes called, was one of the most unique musicians. He may be most famous for his work with Jackson Browne - but he appeared on over 350 albums, including some of his own - with El Rayo-X, Wally Ingram, Henry Kaiser & SO many more. Over the years, both Maury & Spoon were lucky enough to meet David on a few occasions - and David's is one of 4 autographs inside Maury's 1998 Martin OM-28V. Rest in peace, David - and thank you for all the music. This podcast features the conversation and opinions of musician T Spoon Phillips. A writer by trade, Spoon's longtime association with professional musicians, luthiers, and music historians affords him a richly unique perspective on all things acoustic guitar. This includes decades of close friendship with executives and employee at C. F. Martin & Company, past and present, and the host of this podcast, Maury Rutch of Maury's Music.  Visit Spoon at http://TSPguitar.com AND at http://onemanz.com/  Check out Maury's Music at https://www.maurysmusic.com  #podcast #davidlindley

Bernie Larsen, owner, producer and engineer and session musician for Spinout Records and the impresario behind the Underground Exchange, joins the podcast to catch up on what he's been up to since the pandemic hit Ojai like Keith Moon on a drum kit. Larsen's shift to a virtual space for performers created a community around the weekly webcasts with audiences thirsty for live music. He's fully open at his new location at 616 Pearl Street where the venue has become integral to Ojai's music scene, hosting some of the best musicians in the region. We talked about his life in music, beginning at age 10 under the influence of his music-loving mother and forming his first band, playing surf music, and through to his years touring and in the studio with Melissa Etheridge and David Lindley, the slide-guitar virtuoso. And how he came under Ojai's spell during a brief visit years, sitting in Libbey Park and absorbing the sights and sounds. We also talked about the Ojai Sessions, his project to bring together and produce a record with the many talented local musicians and singer-songwriters. Bernie talked about the challenges and benefits of a life in the arts, and how he's always focused on bringing artists together to express themselves with authenticity and loving support. For example, he cobbled together an arts community in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with a performing space and an annual festival. While the pay ain't always great, the joys and rewards compensate. We did not talk about John McPhee's book on shad migrations, John Dee's alchemical experiments or raccoon dogs. Rob takes us back to his music-infused youth when his dad Percy worked for Melody Maker and New Musical Express and his brother Barry managed the High Numbers/Who. We hear about his days booking bands as a Social Sec at Loughborough University, and then about his start at Warner Publishing in 1971. Pitchfork has six ideas on how to solve the broken ticketing system and Nick is eager to discuss them. Central to the question though is the premise that ticketing is actually broken. Is it and, if so, how? Song: Billy Cobham - “Solarization”Greg remembers the father of modern jazz, Wayne Shorter, who passed lsat week at the age of 89. Gaining prominence in the 50's, the jazz saxophonist earned a reputation as a prolific composer unafraid of breaking melodic conventions. His music, if you check it out, sounds so familiar today, but only because of how influential his music has become. He music lives on, but he will be missed.Songs:Art Blakey & The Messengers - “Free for All”Wayne Shorter - “Yes or No”Miles Davis - “Pinocchio”Weather Report - “Black Market”Jay remembers stringed instrument master (“maxi-instrumentalist”) David Lindley, who passed last week at the age of 78. Another fallen legend, Lindley can be seen on YouTube playing dozens of obscure held-stringed instruments with very famous people. His distinctive lap-steel guitar on Jackson Browne's “Running on Empty” may be his most known performance, but his range was endless and he appeared with artists of all genres. He too will be missed.Songs:Jackson Browne - “Running on Empty”David Lindley - “The Indifference of Heaven”Episode Webpage

On this episode, we take a look at another listener's pick: Warren Zevon's eponymous second album. Produced by Jackson Browne and featuring  a who's who of the mid-70's “California Sound” (including members of the Eagles, J.D Souther, David Lindley, and Jackson Browne), the album is full of wry wit and dark humor. His lyrics may cover familiar ground, but he imbibes the subject with a self-depreciated sense of self awareness that strips a way much of the clichéd romance found in so many other artists work. And its all delivered in Zevon's unmistakable voice. This album includes some of his most iconic songs, such as "Hasten Down the Wind," "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me," and the often covered "Mohammed's Radio. " And finally, after almost 20 years after his passing, Zevon is in the running for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We here at This Is Vinyl Tap think it's long overdue.

Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Bruce Edward Walker. He's Midwest Regional Editor for The Center Square. He has written extensively on popular culture, literature and public policy for reference books, newspapers, magazines, and websites. He's on Twitter at @bruceedwalker.Bruce's Music Pick: Warren ZevonThe show begins its 2021 finishing kick with a long-requested episode featuring the music and career of the great Warren Zevon. Zevon is an artist with passionate fans who, at the same time, also can prove to be difficult to grab onto for newcomers. We hope to provide a path.As a singer/songwriter, Zevon can be difficult to pigeonhole. He's a cynic, yes. He writes about portions of society -- outlaws, sociopaths, drug dealers, villains -- that many others might like to forget. He's full of humor and wit. He writes biographical songs yet also has a wonderful way with literary narratives. He was a drunk. He recovered. He was a drunk again. Personal demons often got the best of him. Yet the work stands up.As Scot mentions on the show, a trip through his discography is like a series of mini “We Are the World.” Zevon, for most of his career, was able to attract the biggest California rock stars and the best session musicians around to contribute to his albums. Hey, there's Bonnie Raitt! Lindsey Buckingham! Leland Sklar! Ben Keith! Don Henley! David Lindley! Jackson Browne! Linda Ronstadt! Jeff Porcaro! Steve Lukather! J.D. Souther! The three of us have very different opinions on various portions of Zevon's career, so this one can be a spicy listen. Send lawyers, guns, and money … and get ready for Warren Zevon.
