Summary Courtney Teasley, a criminal trial attorney turned certified business coach, author, and speaker, joins Kathryn Rubino to talk about the case that shaped her career: her own mother's, overcharged as a drug seller instead of a user. Courtney traces how that experience, and a mentor who built a practice on her own terms, pushed her into criminal defense and, eventually, out of full-time practice. The conversation covers why she left the courtroom for coaching and advocacy work, the business lessons law school never taught her, and how her book series, The Easy Way to Learn Your Rights, translates legal literacy into plain, bilingual language for the people who need it most. Key Takeaways Courtney traces her path to criminal defense directly back to her mother being overcharged as a drug seller instead of a user, a decision that shaped how she practices and teaches law. The pressure of high-stakes cases never fully disappears; the lawyers who care the most are the ones who keep showing up despite it. Courtney left full-time practice after realizing one-on-one casework moves too slowly to shift the systemic patterns behind mass incarceration. A CliftonStrengths certification helped Courtney separate her zone of excellence, practicing law, from her zone of genius, teaching and advocacy. Courtney built her book series and coaching practice around plain, bilingual language, arguing legal jargon keeps clients from understanding their own cases.
Raw Gas LIVE @ DAMM Jouvert by Dj Sheldon Papp

Dann nochmal.

While only about 13% of the nation's population is Black, the percentage of incarcerated Blacks can be as high as 50 %. The proportion of Black men on death row is significantly higher than that of whites. Our guest, Courtney Teasley, a criminal defense lawyer, emphasizes the responsibility that defense attorneys have in contributing to incarceration rates. Some lawyers fail to communicate with clients, push plea deals without proper consultation, and neglect to use available court resources or file necessary motions. This lack of diligence can result in missed opportunities for discovering evidence that could change the outcome of a trial. Courtney stresses that defense lawyers should fight for their clients and not simply “go along to get along,” especially in smaller counties where maintaining good relationships with judges is common practice.Courtney described the DAMM community—Disproportionately Affected Marginalized Minority—as the primary demographic impacted by incarceration. Systemic factors such as inadequate education in financial literacy, criminal justice literacy, and civics contribute to this problem. Many individuals are not taught their rights or how to hold government officials accountable, nor are they given the tools to pursue financial stability beyond low-wage jobs. These gaps leave people vulnerable to crimes of poverty and ill-equipped to navigate the legal system if accused. Having financial means, legal knowledge, and civic understanding provides leverage and empowerment, but these advantages are often unavailable in marginalized communities.Courtney's initiatives focus on legal literacy, financial literacy, and civics. She teaches these subjects through mock trial programs at high-priority schools and at HBCUs, aiming to address the lack of foundational legal knowledge. Her business, MFN, stands for Mindset, Finesse, and Non-Negotiable Boundaries, and is dedicated to advocacy training and lawyer coaching.Courtney also discussed the school-to-prison pipeline, which refers to the disproportionate punishment of Black students in schools, which leads to higher rates of suspension and disciplinary actions that can lead to the juvenile justice system. She advocates for empowering students through education in legal literacy, civics, and financial skills, noting that access to such knowledge and opportunities is often limited. Programs and curricula she develops aim to bridge these gaps and provide students with tools for legal and financial empowerment.Ultimately, the need for competent, passionate lawyers in criminal defense is critical. The goal is not necessarily to achieve acquittals for all clients, but to ensure the state proves its case and to minimize negative impacts on individuals' records and communities. Creative solutions, rehabilitation, and strategic partnerships are encouraged to address root causes of crime and support long-term positive outcomes.
Dr. Tessa Damm, an ICU physician turned metabolic health advocate, shares her insights on why women often miss early signs of metabolic dysfunction and how to take back control of their health. Drawing from years in critical care and personal experience with chronic illness, Dr. Damm explains how lifestyle interventions can prevent life-threatening diseases and improve quality of life at any age. She also describes her 12-week Metabolic Transformations™ program, which blends science, coaching, and community to help women achieve lasting health transformations. This episode is a compelling reminder that chronic disease is not inevitable—and that vibrant health is within reach. In this episode, you'll discover: Why 88% of American adults have some degree of metabolic dysfunction How signs like fatigue, brain fog, and stubborn belly fat are often dismissed as "normal aging" The major flaws in our healthcare system's approach to chronic disease Why accountability and community support are essential for successful health changes The surprising results women experience—including increased energy, reduced pain, and regained self-confidence How Dr. Damm's approach differs from traditional medicine with personalized biometrics and weekly habit tweaks What to consider when investing in preventive health instead of waiting for a crisis Memorable Quotes: "No one is coming to save you. Our healthcare system is designed to react to disease, not prevent it." "Chronic disease is not inevitable—and your everyday habits are your most powerful tool." "The real magic is mental—women stop obsessing over their bodies and reclaim their confidence." Bio: Dr. Tessa Damm is an ICU physician who has spent years caring for critically ill adults—often seeing undiagnosed metabolic dysfunction driving life-threatening disease. She now leads Metabolic Transformations™, a high-touch program helping women take back control of their health, reshape their metabolism, and create a future they're excited about. Her work focuses on restoring metabolic flexibility, preserving strength, and mastering lifestyle habits—because the most powerful changes happen outside the doctor's office. Through experimenting with delivery models, she discovered that coaching is the most effective approach. By prioritizing frequent touch-points, individualized lifestyle education, and small-group support with women on the same journey, she consistently helps clients achieve meaningful, lasting change. Her mission is simple: show that chronic disease is not inevitable—and give women the tools to rewrite their health trajectory. In this insightful episode of The Conscious Fertility and Beyond Podcast, Dr. Lorne Brown is joined by his colleagues from Acubalance, Dr. Kali MacIsaac Francis and Dr. Ashley Damm, to demystify perimenopause and menopause. Together they unpack the hormonal fluctuations behind symptoms like brain fog, sleep changes, and mood shifts—and explain why resilience and lifestyle foundations are key to thriving through midlife. From hormone therapy to nutrition and mindset, this conversation offers both science and compassion for women navigating this natural transition. Key takeaways:Perimenopause starts earlier than most think: Symptoms can appear up to 10 years before menopause and vary widely between women.Lab tests don't tell the full story: Hormone levels fluctuate too much for a single blood test to define perimenopause—symptoms matter more.Resilience is the real root: It's not just declining hormones, but our body's adaptability—sleep, stress, diet, and emotional regulation—that determine how we feel.Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT) is safe and effective when used correctly: The original fears from early studies were largely due to outdated synthetic hormones and misinterpreted data.Lifestyle medicine is foundational: Building muscle, improving sleep, balancing blood sugar, and nourishing the adrenals are non-negotiables for long-term vitality. But here's the secret: you're not broken. You're becoming.Menopause isn't a disease to be treated — it's a transformation to be supported. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we don't see menopause as the end of something. We see it as a rebirth — a powerful shift in Jing, Qi, and Shen — that can bring wisdom, vitality, and even deeper connection to yourself. And yes, it's possible to feel like yourself again (maybe even better). Here's how to survive — and thrive — during menopause. The Menopause Current is where transition becomes transformation. A new Drone Emergency Medical Services (DEMS) has now entered operational service in the Forges-les-Eaux area in Normandy, where the system is fully integrated into the regional emergency dispatch chain for suspected cardiac arrest. This marks a significant step in the development of drone-supported emergency medical care in France and means the service is now used in real emergency calls to shorten time to first medical intervention. The drone system is operated by Everdrone in close collaboration with the French emergency dispatch centers (SAMU) and delivers an automated external defibrillator (AED) to the site of a suspected cardiac arrest within minutes - often several minutes before the ambulance arrives. Drone service to deliver automated defibrillators In cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, the chance of survival decreases by approximately 7-10 percent for every minute without defibrillation, making early access to an AED absolutely critical. By shortening the time to first intervention, the DEMS service addresses one of the most decisive moments in the entire chain of survival. The project was initiated by Rouen SAMU, where Medical Director Dr. Cédric Damm early on recognized the potential of Everdrone's DEMS model to shorten response times in cardiac arrest cases. The SAMU has worked closely with Delivrone - the leading medical drone operator in France - to implement a solution, and since 2022 Everdrone and Delivrone have collaborated to provide French hospitals with a state-of-the-art DEMS capability. Implementation in Normandy is carried out together with Delivrone, CHU Rouen Normandie (the university hospital in Rouen), Région Normandie, and Mairie de Forges-les-Eaux. Together, these organizations form a long-term partnership with a clear objective: reducing time to first medical action and thereby strengthening survival prospects in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. The system in Normandy is based on Everdrone's established DEMS platform, which has been in operational service in Sweden since 2022. The Swedish results - demonstrating clear time savings and improved access to AEDs - have been central in shaping the French service. "Having our system now used in live emergency calls in Normandy demonstrates how quickly DEMS technology can create tangible value. Together with our regional partners, we are taking an important step toward giving more patients life-saving support several minutes earlier than is possible today," says Mats Sällström, CEO of Everdrone. "In cases of cardiac arrest, every minute is critical, and the ability to place an AED on-site several minutes earlier can directly influence a patient's chance of survival. By integrating Everdrone's DEMS system into our dispatch chain, we gain a valuable complement that strengthens our ability to act quickly in the most time-sensitive situations. The project in Normandy shows that drone deliveries can become a natural and effective part of the emergency medical care of the future," says Dr. Cédric Damm, Medical Director, SAMU 76 Rouen. About Everdrone Everdrone AB is a leading provider of autonomous drone systems for emergency response and healthcare, headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden. Its proprietary technology enables the extremely rapid delivery of life-saving medical equipment - such as automated external defibrillators (AEDs) - directly to the scene, while also providing real-time video support to emergency dispatchers. Known for safe, regulatory-compliant operations in urban areas, the company collaborates with public authorities to integrate its systems with existing emergency infrastructure. Everdrone's work has been featured in leading medical journals, including The Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine, and gained international attention as the first to save a life using an autonomous drone. The company is expanding internationally, with pilot programs and collaborations across Europe. For more information, visit everdrone.com an...

“Focus on the skill of listening to your specific body, your specific symptoms, and figuring out what your system is responding to.” - Cait Van DammIf you work with women navigating chronic illness, you've probably seen the “Doctor Roadshow” up close. These women have seen multiple practitioners without resolution and arrive at your practice exhausted and overwhelmed, with a list of protocols, supplements, and instructions that could fill a binder. They've done everything they were told, but still don't feel better. Instead of clarity, they're drowning in noise. This is the moment we have to recognize that what they need from us is to help them step back. What looks like resistance or burnout is often a dysregulated nervous system trying to protect you. Clients who have lived with chronic conditions for years tend to lose connection to pleasure, internal cues, and trust in their bodies. They stop listening inward and start chasing external solutions, which only deepens the overwhelm. Rebuilding safety, awareness, and sustainable self-regulation is the foundation they need to optimize their health.Today, I'm joined by Functional Nutritionist Robin Randisi and Pelvic Floor Therapist and Nervous System Coach Cait Van Damm to explore how we can help our clients to overcome the long haul of chronic illness. We talk about stripping back complex protocols, rebuilding interoceptive awareness, creating spaciousness for the nervous system, helping clients experiment with what works for their specific bodies, how they help clients to reconnect with pleasure, shifting away from checklist-style protocols, and more.Enjoy the episode, and let's innovate and integrate together!---Learn more or watch the video version of this conversation at https://integrativewomenshealthinstitute.com/what-gets-missed-for-chronic-illness-healing-how-simple-unsexy-tools-create-sustainable-recovery-with-robin-randisi-cait-van-damm/.Connect with me and access our entire platform at IntegrativeWomensHealthInstitute.com (https://integrativewomenshealthinstitute.com/).

Our mutual friend (and PR guru) Laura Peet suggested I have liquor biz lifer Ken on, and he was a great guest! We chatted about the liquor industry, recent developments like GLP-1 inhibitors, the effects of phone-based gambling on drinks sales in bars, the Seagrams curse, and a whole bunch more, while I was drinking a Fre Damm Tostada a non-alc beer whose parent brand, Damm coincidentally is imported to the US by United States Beverage, where Ken's been brought in to bolster the liquor division. Send us a textCourtney Teasley takes us behind the curtain to expose how arrests and charges require only "probable cause" – essentially, that someone probably committed a crime. This low standard follows individuals through most of their journey until trial, but with 97% of defendants accepting plea deals before reaching that point, most convictions occur without ever meeting the "beyond a reasonable doubt" standard. The consequences are devastating, particularly for what Teasley calls "DAMM communities" – Disproportionately Affected, Marginalized Minority communities. Black Americans are six times more likely to be incarcerated than their white counterparts, not because they commit more crimes, but because of targeted over-policing and systemic biases. Without financial resources to mount effective defenses, many people accept pleas simply to escape a system stacked against them. She offers concrete solutions through her MFN Framework: Mindset (adopting an "innocent until proven guilty" perspective), Finesse (creative defense strategies), and Non-negotiable boundaries (standing firmly on constitutional rights). Her work shifts the focus from reactive approaches that help people after conviction to proactive strategies that prevent convictions in the first place.Whether you're a community leader, church member, or concerned citizen, Teasley's insights will transform how you understand justice in America and offer practical ways you can contribute to meaningful change. Courtney's BioCourtney Teasley is a nationally recognized criminal defense attorney, business coach, and visionary educator, shifting the paradigm on how we fight systemic injustice. As the founder of emeffen and creator of the MFN Framework for Proactive Advocacy, Courtney leads a movement to empower disproportionately affected, marginalized minorities (D.A.M.M.) with the legal knowledge and strategy to prevent convictions—before the courtroom ever comes into view. Her impact spans grassroots campaigns, justice-focused curriculum development, and legal education for both community members and lawyers. Through her Easy Way to Learn Your Rights book series, school-based criminal justice literacy programs, and D.A.M.M. Advocate and Legal Warrior trainings, Courtney equips everyday people, educators, and defense attorneys to proactively resist the criminal justice system's most insidious traps.Whether speaking to students, churches, or national audiences, she delivers bold, accessible frameworks that challenge the status quo and offer real, community-rooted alternatives. Her work has not only influenced elections but has also helped reunite families separated by state violence and launched legal innovations tLike what you heard?
