Kerry schools are among those named by the scoping inquiry into historical sexual abuse in schools run by religious orders. The inquiry was established by the Government after a radio documentary exposed the abuse of boys by religious orders in Blackrock College in Dublin. The inquiry report stated that over 800 people had been accused of more than 2,300 instances of historical sexual abuse. The Clare branch of the Social Democrats insists the State's current approach to school transport isn't working for families in this county. On Tuesday's Morning Focus, Peter O'Connell was joined by Brendan Horan Clare INTO Rep and Edel Smith, Principal of Carrigaholt NS to discuss primary school teacher shortages and smartphone use in school. The Irish National Teachers' Organisation (INTO), in conjunction with the Irish Primary Principals' Network (IPPN) and the Catholic Primary Schools Management Association (CPSMA) today published the results of an extensive survey highlighting an unprecedented level of vacant teaching posts in primary and special schools. The survey found that in total, there is a current shortfall of 809 permanent, fixed-term and long-term substitute teachers in the schools who responded to the survey. To make matters even worse, these schools have also indicated that they anticipate having an additional 1,202 long-term vacancies within the next three months. Minister for Education Norma Foley will also bring a memo to Cabinet on Tuesday which will aim to encourage parents not to buy smartphones for primary school children. A Shannon Councilor fears a lack of heating at a local school will result in students getting sick. A number of parents have contacted Sinn Féin's Donna McGettigan with complaints about the central heating being switched off in the school and she says students aren't permitted to wear coats or jackets in classrooms. It's been confirmed the principal of the school and Minister for Education Norma Foley have been contacted, with the latter issuing a response pledging to investigate the matter. Councillor Donna McGettigan believes in some cases, students struggling with the cold are afraid to speak up.

Last week Minister for Education Norma Foley confirmed that students would have to wait until Friday, September 3rd, to access their Leaving Cert results, about three weeks later than normal. It is likely that CAO round one offers for college applicants will follow shortly afterwards in the week beginning Monday, September 6th. Dylan McLoughlin spoke on Tipp Today about the delayed results and any advice he may have for the many students who are sitting the examinations tomorrow.
