A major cause of electricity outages in rural Clare has been trees falling on overhead power lines. O'Callaghan's Mills farmer and Secretary of the Clare branch of the Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association Martin McMahon says too many trees are located near power lines and farmers should be allowed to cut them down.

Clare isn't expected to see a significant reduction in homelessness until the right housing is built. The Banner County has experienced a 25% spike in the number of adults living in emergency accommodation within the past year, with 85 recorded as homeless in November compared to just 68 in the same month in 2023. A report from the Parliamentary Budget Office earlier this year recommended that Clare County Council boost its social housing stock by 58% to keep in line with housing need. Taxpayers are ornery after the City of Winnipeg proposed a 5.9% increase to their property taxes. Finance Chair Jeff Browaty joins us in Episode 37 to pitch service improvements that he and Mayor Scott Gillingham say their budget will deliver. 7.15 Part 2- Coun. Jeff Browaty says that while in theory the law requires the city to have a balanced budget, escalating costs like overtime for firefighters and transit operators have wiped out the rainy day fund. While his budget proposes $41M in savings across departments, "if we don't have enough revenue, we're going to have to start closing down the amenities people appreciate." Browaty addresses raising transit fares, new payment options, and 311 wait time improvements, but admits, "it's ridiculous that there's certain things that are failing residents and it's unacceptable." 14.00- Browaty confirms the poll Gillingham cited as proof there's support for the budget only surveyed 400 people, in a city of over 800,000. With affordability an issue, raising taxes was "the last thing we wanted to do" but other levels of government benefit from inflation while "fire trucks are being purchased in US dollars." 17.40- Marty asks why city councillors aren't tightening their belts with wage or ward allowance rollbacks. Clare's MEP claims current rates of recycling are not doing enough to tackle the climate crisis, and that a drastic reduction in the usage of plastic is required. It comes as the International Court of Justice has began hearings, with the aim of setting legal parameters in place to protect countries most vulnerable to climate change. Low-lying Pacific Island nations are to the forefront of proceedings, as more than 100 countries are set to make submissions over the course of the unprecedented two week long hearing. With Ireland currently having the highest rate of plastic rate per person, Scarriff Independent MEP for Ireland South, Michael McNamara, claims greater efforts need to be made to curtail the amount of plastic being produced.

A Clare climate activist insists the US must be a leader when it comes to climate change, instead of continuing with its plan to expand the fossil fuel industry. A number of President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet picks are sparking fears of a regressive new climate policy across the Atlantic which could have devastating long-term effects on the planet. Trump secured his status as a climate-sceptic as far back as 2012, when he famously tweeted that "the concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese, in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive". Since then, he's done little to ease the fears of those who believe in climate change, calling the idea of long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns a "scam" as recently as September. Throughout his recent Presidential campaign, he repeated the mantra "drill baby drill" in relation to his pledge to ramp up fracking in the US while in office. Concerns have been raised following his recent cabinet appointments, which include Lee Zeldin as Environmental Protection Agency administrator, Chris Wright as energy secretary and Doug Burgum as interior secretary, all of whom have adopted views falling under the umbrella of climate-scepticism. Scariff-based Futureproof Clare spokesperson, Sinead Sheehan says rolling back the environmental measures already in place would be fatal, as the planet's survival hinges on more action being taken. It comes as a webinar on energy justice is being held this week by Feminist Communities for Climate Justice. The online event, which is called 'Safe, Warm, Green: Towards Energy Justice', takes place on Thursday at 1pm and will address the intersection of housing, energy, and cost-of-living crises in Ireland. Lisdoonvarna resident Theresa O'Donoghue recently completely the Changing Ireland certificate programme in Maynooth University, in conjunction with Community Work Ireland and the National Women's Council, and will be speaking at the event about her experience of energy poverty as a single mother. She says she's become aware of how particularly vulnerable women are to energy poverty. One of Clare's representatives in European Parliament, meanwhile, is calling for a review of taxes on fossil fuels to relieve the burden on consumers and businesses. Seán Kelly has said rising energy prices are putting serious strain on families and businesses. The Fine Gael Ireland South MEP believes some levies on energy usage are necessary, but suggests a more efficient process is needed to combat high energy prices.

A Clare-based haulier insists education at both ends of the age spectrum must be a pivotal part of the solution when it comes to road safety. New RSA data indicates a quarter of drivers involved in fatal road collisions over the past five years were driving for work. Heavy goods vehicles made up 11% of vehicles involved in deadly crashes and in most cases, either the driver of the other vehicle or a pedestrian was killed. In a gripping courtroom scene, Robert Telles, a former Clark County Public Administrator, took the stand to assert his innocence in the murder trial of Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German. Telles, 47, has been accused of fatally stabbing German in September 2022 following a series of critical articles about Telles' office. He pleaded not guilty to murder with the use of a deadly weapon and has claimed throughout the trial that he was framed. "I want to say, unequivocally, I am innocent, I didn't kill Mr. German," Telles told the jury during his testimony, which was marked by frequent interruptions due to objections from the prosecution. Telles, who was not questioned by a defense attorney, repeatedly stated that he was "nervous" and described the ordeal as a "nightmare." Telles' defense has argued that he was targeted because he tried to expose corruption in his role as Clark County Public Administrator. “It'd be quite a coincidence, the fact that Mr. German was killed and it was put on me, that they just had a serendipitous benefit from that,” Telles said, suggesting that others had something to gain from framing him for the crime. The trial, which has drawn significant attention due to the nature of the crime and the victim's profession, comes nearly two years after German's death. Prosecutors have painted a picture of a disgruntled Telles, enraged by German's reporting, meticulously planning the attack. Prosecutors also pointed to the timing of the murder, noting that German had made a public records request just hours before his death, potentially exacerbating tensions between him and Telles. They also revealed that Telles had been searching for information about German online in the days leading up to the murder.
