In this week’s Parliament: Week in Review, Tara Roos, CapeTalk commentator and Business Day Political Correspondent, joins Lester Kiewit to unpack the firing of Sisisi Tolashe and the formation of Parliament’s Phala Phala impeachment committee. Tolashe’s dismissal from Cabinet has sparked debate about accountability, political performance, and shifting dynamics within the ANC, while Parliament’s decision to move ahead with an impeachment related committee places renewed attention on President Cyril Ramaphosa and the lingering fallout from the Phala Phala scandal. The South African National Civic Organisation, SANCO in Gauteng has rejected Premier Panyaza Lesufi's recent cabinet reshuffle and called for his immediate resignation. The civic organisation says the changes sideline the Alliance and insult residents. SANCO is criticising the appointment of former Ekurhuleni Finance MMC Nkululeko Dunga to the Finance portfolio in Gauteng. SANCO has also condemned handing the Economic Development portfolio to Rise Mzansi, which holds one seat, calling it political horse trading. The Government had their Cabinet reshuffle last week, with Minister Chris Bishop losing a few key roles. What did we make of this? Should Chris Bishop be worried? This morning Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced a cabinet reshuffle, which sees MPs Chris Penk and Penny Simmons get promoted, while MP Chris Bishop loses leader of the House and National Party campaign Chair role, but become Attorney-General. Former National Party Staffer and co-host of the 'Gone By Lunchtime' podcast Ben Thomas discusses the changes with Jesse.
Chris Penk and Penny Simmonds have been promoted to Cabinet, as the Prime Minister reshuffles his ministerial lineup ahead of the election. The reshuffle sees first-term MPs Cameron Brewer and Mike Butterick made ministers outside of Cabinet. Cameron Brewer becomes Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, and Small Business and Manufacturing, and Associate Minister of Immigration. Mike Butterick becomes Minister for Land Information and Associate Minister of Agriculture. The changes were necessitated by the upcoming retirement of Judith Collins, as well as Dr Shane Reti's decision to stand down at the election.

The American President's doing a live presser today on his war. The Australian Prime Minister's just wrapped a live address to the nation on the oil shock. And here, our Prime Minister is making his own announcement about a cabinet reshuffle. It's a bit of an odd time to do it. He's got Reti and Collins leaving, so he had to do it some point. The day before Easter Friday means he wants to spray and walk away for the weekend. The good news is there's plenty of talent to promote - the likes of James Meager and Chris Penk. Which is a contrast to the Opposition where the pool is quite shallow. Water comes up to your ankles. For Luxon, getting the right team around him is not just important for running the country, it's his entire election strategy. His pitch to voters is basically that he's the HR department. He prides himself on putting the right man in the right job. The fact he's doing it today also suggests that he's not listening to the press gallery, who criticised him for opening Christchurch's new stadium while Nicola Willis was left to front oil crisis stand ups and pressers. This is not necessarily a bad thing. He's doing other stuff. Like reshuffles, thank you very much. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced a major reshuffling of ministerial portfolios within the National party. Among the most notable portfolio changes was handing over Dr Shane Reti's role as minister of health to Transport Minister Simeon Brown and the appointment of Nicola Willis as Minister of the newly created portfolio of Minister of Economic Growth, a title formerly known as the Minister of Economic Development. The cabinet reshuffle has led to concerns about the fate of Health NZ and Aotearoa's healthcare sector, noting that Shane Reti had over 20 years of experience working in medicine, whereas Simeon Brown has none. The reshuffle also comes shortly after a recent poll by the Taxpayers Union showed that National's approval rating had fallen below 30%, the lowest rating they've received while in government since 1999. Oto spoke with Michael Swanson, a PHD candidate in New Zealand politics at the University of Otago, to discuss why National made the decision to shuffle their portfolios at this point in time and the impacts of the portfolio changes for the wider economy, particulary for the healthcare system and constituents in the South Island.
Dr Shane Reti has lost his health portfolio in a major cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. Simeon Brown will take over as Health Minister. Brown spoke to Paddy Gower.
The prime minister's cabinet reshuffle has been given the thumbs down from Labour. Leader Chris Hipkins spoke to Paddy Gower.
The Prime Minister says he hasn't lost confidence in Shane Reti despite sacking him as Health Minister. Dr Reti was a major casualty of Sunday's reshuffle, with Simeon Brown set to take on the role. Political commentator Ben Thomas spoke to Paddy Gower.
Simeon Brown is making his priorities clear as he prepares to take over as Health Minister. The portfolio has moved from Dr Shane Reti to Brown, moving Reti out of his fourth place in the National Party rankings. Brown indicated the targets bought in by Reti show things are beginning to stabilise but said "we really need to focus on delivery." He joins the show to discuss what he will bring to his new role. Health Minister Shane Reti is expected to be demoted in today's surprise Cabinet reshuffle. Prime Minister Chris Luxon is set to reveal some new changes to personnel and portfolios later this afternoon - and it's believed Shane Reti will be the first casualty of the new year. Newstalk ZB political editor Jason Walls says Luxon had not planned to do a reshuffle this early in the year, and it's unclear what inspired this change. Following the profound setback to democratization from Golkar's takeover, constitutional justices undertook a spirited effort to restore competition to regional-head elections -- only for parliament to countermand the court a day later with a Regional Head Election Law revision. To examine the whiplash-like effects of events, we enlisted the veteran journalist Wahyu Dhyatmika of Tempo - the venerable news group that occupies a central role in documenting Indonesia's political convulsions. We discuss the circumstances of Golkar Chair Airlangga Hartarto's resignation, the ensuing cabinet reshuffle, two momentous Constitutional Court verdicts on 20 August and the legislative reprisal led by Gerindra in parliament. We assess the prospects for demonstrations, the implications for the legitimacy of the regional‑head election system and the longer-term consequences for the rule-of-law versus "Ruler's Law". Could this be the most controversial of all recent cabinet reshuffles to date? Both co-pilots question Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's decision, wondering whether he has abandoned the faithful Red Wall in favour of appealing to the swing voters and picking up some of the Lib Dems fans.Liam thinks the PM has made a grave error in surrounding himself with politicians that are out of touch with the people of this Country. Whilst Allison thinks post reshuffle that the demise of the Conservative party could be sooner than we think and that Sunak will be the one carrying the coffin.Boarding the rocket this week is Director of National Institute of Economics, Professor Jagjit Chadha. who shares the bleak reality of the UK economy ahead of the Autumn budget next week and reveals what he thinks the country could do to boost growth levels. And finally hell hath no fury like a Suellla scorned, as co-pilot Pearson gives her hot take on THAT letter.Read more from Liam: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/authors/liam-halligan/ |Read more from Allison: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/authors/a/ak-ao/allison-pearson/ |Read Allison ‘Braverman's letter was written in fire – none of us can doubt what a snake Sunak is: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2023/11/14/rishi-sunak-suella-braverman-sacked-home-secretary-snake/Listen to The Lockdown Files : https://podfollow.com/the-lockdown-files |Need help subscribing or reviewing? The four top jobs in Rishi Sunak's new cabinet have all been filled with men. It's the first time this has happened since 2009. To unpack what this means, Emma Barnett is joined by Baroness Kate Fall, former deputy chief of staff to the newly appointed Lord Cameron, and Executive Editor of Politico Anne McElvoy. Double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes spoke publicly about her sexuality for the first time in June last year. Her new memoir, Unique, details how serving in the military in the late 1980s - when it was illegal to be gay in the military – was a major factor in contributing to her decades-long silence. Dame Kelly joins Woman's Hour to speak about her experience and what it meant to hear the Government's apology to LGBT veterans. In April 2020, Debenhams in Ireland closed all 11 of its stores, informing its staff they had been let go in the process. What ensued were pickets and protests across Ireland that lasted for 406 days, 24 hours a day and through all weathers. As a new film is released on the subject in the UK, Emma is joined by Carol Ann Bridgeman who worked for Debenhams for 15 years and Jane Crowe who worked there for 23 years. Karuna Nundy is an advocate at the Supreme Court in India and has been leading legal campaigns to criminalise marital rape and to legalise same-sex marriage. She was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2022 and will be giving a speech on her career tonight at the Institute for Development Studies. She joins Emma to discuss her role in these high-profile cases. Presenter: Emma Barnett Producer: Lottie Garton
