In this episode, we continue our in-depth series with historian John G. Turner, author of Joseph Smith: The Rise and Fall of an American Prophet. Covering chapter five of his book, we take a deep dive into the claims of the Three and Eight Witnesses to the golden plates. Did they actually see physical plates—or was it a visionary experience? We explore the early translation period, the role of the Whitmer family, the revelations guiding Joseph Smith, and the complicated testimonies of Martin Harris, Oliver Cowdery, and David Whitmer. Were the golden plates material objects, or were they seen with "spiritual eyes"? We also discuss later accounts, contradictions, and the ongoing debate among scholars and believers.Highlights:The experiences of the Three and Eight WitnessesSpiritual vs. physical claims of the platesTestimonies, contradictions, and controversiesWhat happened to the plates—and the witnesses—afterwardSubscribe for more episodes exploring Joseph Smith's life, early Mormonism, and the origins of the Book of Mormon.Show NotesYouTube00:00:00 Introduction00:07:34 Why are the Whitmer's getting involved? 00:14:28 Joseph Smith covering the plates in a barrel of beans00:20:13 The Whitmer Family00:25:51 The Melchizedek priesthood00:31:31 The experience with the three witnesses00:39:12 Did Gold plates exist?00:42:49 Spiritual eyes vs physical eyes00:45:38 Did the witnesses see physical plates? 01:03:17 The eight witnesses01:10:15 Possible explanation for the witnesses to the golden plates01:25:26 What became of the Eight Witnesses?01:28:22 What became of the golden plates? 01:31:43 How the Book of Mormon gets printed01:49:13 What is coming up next___________________Mormon Stories Thanks Our Generous Donors!Help us continue to deliver quality content by becoming a donor today:One-time or recurring donation through DonorboxSupport us on PatreonPayPalVenmoOur Platforms:YouTubePatreonSpotifyApple PodcastsContact us:MormonStories@gmail.comPO Box 171085, Salt Lake City, UT 84117Social Media:Insta: @mormstoriesTikTok: @mormonstoriespodcastJoin the Discord

Armor of God podcast for KidsArmor of God podcast for childrenAll Things Must Be Done in Order”Doctrine and Covenants 27–28The armor of god is what this episode mainly focuses on. Revelation was still a relatively new concept for the Saints as the Restoration continued to unfold. Early Church members knew that the Prophet Joseph Smith could receive revelation for the Church. But could others? Questions like this became critical when Hiram Page, one of the Eight Witnesses of the gold plates, believed he had received revelations for the Church. Many faithful Saints believed that these revelations were from God. The Lord responded by teaching that in His Church “all things must be done in order” (Doctrine and Covenants 28:13). This week we will learn this story and learn that only the prophet can receive revelation for the church. The scriptures teach that we should put on the “whole armor” of God (see Ephesians 6:11–18 and D&C 27:15–18). When we study the scriptures and pray, it's like we put on armor that helps keep us safe.Helmet of SalvationA helmet protects the head. We keep our mind safe when we follow Jesus and do what He wants us to do.Shield of FaithFaith in Jesus Christ is like a shield of protection. When we believe in Jesus and try to be like Him, we can make good choices, even when things are hard.Breastplate of RighteousnessThe breastplate protects the heart. When we love God with all our heart, we try to keep His commandments. We are blessed when we choose the right.Etc. You're listening to Come Follow Me Kids! A Come Follow Me Podcast. What is the Best External Evidence for the Book of Mormon?

Church History Matters

Aside from the text of the Book of Mormon itself and a personal witness from God's Spirit, what is the best evidence for the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon? Different people might answer this question in different ways, but in today's episode of Church History Matters Casey and Scott propose that the very best external evidence for the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon is the collective testimony of the Three and Eight Witnesses. Their experiences appear to have been premeditated, anticipated, and orchestrated by God in order to help the rest of us have reason to pause and take seriously both Joseph Smith's testimony and, most importantly, the primary evidence of the text of the Book of Mormon itself. In every copy of the Book of Mormon ever published, the written witnesses of these three and eight have been printed for all to consider. And it's true that several of these eleven men either left the Church because of difficulties with Joseph Smith or were excommunicated from it, yet none of them ever denied the reality of their experience as a Book of Mormon witness. In this episode we discuss why this matters.  For show notes and transcript for this and other episodes go to https://doctrineandcovenantscentral.org/church-history-matters-podcast/

Any thoughtful critic of the Book of Mormon is forced to take a position on the Book of Mormon Witnesses.  Were they conscious frauds, delusional or perhaps hypnotized or otherwise misled?  The Three Witnesses described seeing an angel and viewing the plates, together.  The Eight Witnesses described handling the plates, turning the pages and seeing the engravings.  Other witnesses, like Emma Smith, described picking up the plates, while covered with a linen cloth, feeling the pages, making them rustle.  William Smith, another witness, lifted them and moved the pages through the linen cloth cover.  Three of the five five physical senses, sight, touch and hearing, are used by the witnesses. Critics, including Grant Palmer and Dan Vogel, who claim some kind of delusion, hypnosis-like event or vision, are taking a position contrary to the actual, consistent testimony of the witnesses, whose testimony is based on three physical senses.

We consider their witness to the world and the evidence it brings. However we also reflect on the way that we can become a witness even though we have not physically seen the things they saw. Henry B Eyring : Those you love can have more than the physical evidence given those witnesses by what they saw and heard. Those three witnesses had something more, something we all need. The Holy Ghost bore witness to their minds and hearts that what they saw and heard was true. The Spirit told them that the angel was from God and that the voice was that of the Lord Jesus Christ. That witness of the Spirit was given to them and many who were not there. It is a witness that can, if we qualify for the companionship of the Holy Ghost, be ours and stay with us forever.

The Interview: In this episode of the LDS Perspectives Podcast, Stephen Smoot interviews Grant Hardy, editor of the newly released Maxwell Institute Study Edition of the Book of Mormon. They discuss the history of publishing the Book of Mormon, and in particular the key features and motivations behind Grant’s earlier Reader’s Edition. While the Study Edition shares many of the features that made that earlier edition so useful—including paragraphs, quotations marks, poetic stanzas, and section headings—it also includes changes that reflect Book of Mormon research over the last fifteen years. The paragraphing, poetic formatting, and section headings have all been revised. Bolded text in the lengthy quotations from Isaiah and Matthew indicate where there are differences between the Book of Mormon and the King James Version, making it easier to see how the Nephite record can function as a commentary on the Bible. The original chapters are more clearly marked. And there are many more footnotes pointing out literary features, narrative connections, and helpful observations about events and people. Grant shares some of his favorite new insights that have been incorporated into the volume, along with why he believes Emma Smith’s testimony deserves equal billing with those of the Three and Eight Witnesses. The Study Edition has several hundred footnotes drawn from Royal Skousen’s Critical Text Project identifying superior readings from the original and printer’s manuscripts that were lost in the process of copying, typesetting, and printing various editions of the Book of Mormon. There are also numerous footnotes suggesting alternative punctuation that clarify the meaning of particular verses. And, of course, at the end of the volume are helpful maps, charts, indexes, brief essays, and excerpts from primary sources about Joseph Smith and the translation. Together, the general formatting of the Study Edition makes the Book of Mormon easier to read, while the footnotes help focus attention on exact words and historical details. It is significant as well that while the Reader’s Edition used the 1920 edition of the Book of Mormon for its base text, the Maxwell Institute received permission from the Church to reproduce the official 2013 version of the text in the Study Edition, so the words are exactly the same. This means that not only can this new edition be used as a study aid for college students, teachers, missionaries, and in personal study but also it can be read as canonized scripture. The conversation concludes with comments about the striking full-page woodcuts that were commissioned especially for this volume from the noted LDS artist Brian Kershisnik, and how this Study Edition can help teach members of the Church how to better read and understand the Book of Mormon. About Our Guest:  Grant Hardy is Professor of History and Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Many members of the Church know the stories of the Three and Eight Witnesses, but far fewer know about the "unofficial" witnesses to the plates. Among their ranks, Mary Whitmer stands out. Not only were her personal sacrifices indispensable in moving the translation forward, but she was blessed with the appearance of an angelic messenger that showed her the plates themselves. We may not receive a divine manifestation like Mary's, but her story shows that the Lord is mindful of all his children, and blesses us each in our own way.

Can you recommend an order in which to read your books? Why is the Bible THE fundamental text of Western Civilization and culture, its themes, stories, and values permeating our moral codes, our artistic expressions, and indeed our shared consciousness? The story of the modern creation of â??Saint Odysseus.â?? How credible do you find the notion that Marcion's gospel might have been a version of the Gospel of Mark? Isnâ??t the negative treatment of Peter in Mark inconsistent with the tradition that Mark got his Could you recommend a work/s dealing with the theme of 'conflict resolution' passages in the New Testament: refutations of so-called heretical ideas by having someone, typically Jesus, say something that refutes a given idea? What does it mean to say that something is 'taught in the Bible'? Is something that is extrapolated from the text, for instance trinitarianism, to be seen as 'bible sanctioned' given it does not appear explicitly in the text? Is there any link between the Nazarenes of the New Testament and the Nazirite tradition of the Old Testament? What events in the history of Christianity (or religious history in general) could have easily turned out differently, with big implications? Mark often seems to borrow OT texts, only to split them and reverse the halves. Furthermore, these passages are always associated with his â??sandwichesâ?? (the intercalation of two Jesus stories originally separate). Is Mark calling attention to his having derived the Jesus versions via Spirit-inspired esoteric reading of scripture disclosing, originally, events undergone by Jesus as he descended through the celestial spheres to earth? How long did Adam and Eve live in the Garden? Why are so many Biblical characters renamed?  Was this the result of the ancient writers trying to fuse two characters together? And is Saul becoming Paul really a renaming, or is Paul just a Hellenization of Saul? If evangelicals are so keen on "eyewitness testimony," shouldnâ??t they accept Mormonism, since the Book of Mormon begins with "The Testimony of the Three Witnesses" and "The Testimony of the Eight Witnesses" who supposedly saw the golden plates from which Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon? Why would Mark make sure to include both â??feeding the multitudeâ?? stories seeing they are so much alike? Was there really such a huge fan base of the Feeding of the Four Thousand which would have compelled "Mark to include it?

Today Chris and Clay join me again for a round-table discussion about the eleven witnesses to the Book of Mormon.  We talk at length about our assumptions that the Three Witnesses has a spiritual event, that the Eight Witnesses had a physical event, whether their experience was consistent, and how the Institutional Church may have […] The post 269: The Book of Mormon Witnesses appeared first on Mormon Discussion by Bill Reel.

Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to John Whitmer, at Fayette, New York, June 1829 (see History of the Church, 1:50; see also the heading to section 14). The message is intimately and impressively personal in that the Lord tells of what was known only to John Whitmer and himself. John Whitmer later became one of the Eight Witnesses to the Book of Mormon.
