Indianapolis-based Eleven Fifty Academy was created to change the economic trajectory of low-income, less educated or underemployed adults and their families by increasing post-secondary educational attainment and employability. With community and employer partners, Eleven Fifty is building a tech workforce pipeline at scale. Its graduates have filled more than 800 tech jobs since the start of the pandemic, earn average starting salaries of $54,000 and 97% of them remain in the Indiana tech ecosystem.

I invited on 3 graduates to review their experience with the coding bootcamp, Eleven Fifty Academy. The variety of skill levels the Cares Act brought in really highlighted the challenges of not having a strict screening process and thorough prep work. As usual, we also dove into many things like the instructors, culture, curriculum, etc. Enjoy!Hosts and Guests:Don Hansen (host):Linkedin - https://www.linkedin.com/in/donthedeveloperWebsite - https://www.donthedeveloper.tvChris Blake (guest):Linkedin - https://www.linkedin.com/in/cblake35Website - https://www.cblakedev.comSally Mellinger (guest):Linkedin - https://www.linkedin.com/in/sallymellingerKeisha Mitchell (guest):Linkedin - https://www.linkedin.com/in/keisha-mitchell-6323a2150Website - https://www.rootdir.blog---------------------------------------------------❤️ If you find my content helpful, please consider supporting me on Patreon and get access to additional perks. Advancing Tech at Martin University: As we talked about last week, there are a lot of jobs out there, but just because there's a job it doesn't man your qualified for it. But Martin University and Eleven-Fifty Academy wants to help you change that with their advancing tech program. That's any skill set that is now part of every single industry. Everything you do or every place you go has a website or an app…which needs someone to run and build it. Many of the jobs can be done remotely and they pay good money. On this edition of Open Lines we have information that can help get you there! Someone You Should Know: Belinda Drake It's time to introduce a new segment on Open Lines, it's called “Someone You Should Know.” Where we introduce you to a Hoosier is cool, doing something cool or is on their way to being someone cool. These are the people you want to know before they reach the top, so you can see they're growth and maybe one day say, you knew them when. This month's person you should know is Belinda Drake.
Tech hiring is booming, but there's an apparent shortage of tech workers. We're diving into all the news we read this month about hiring, reskilling, upskilling, and diversifying the tech pipeline through programs like coding bootcamps and employer-side training. We're covering Indiana's new Income Share Agreement (ISA) legislation by speaking with Eleven Fifty Academy's Founder & CEO Scott Jones. Plus, find out which 12 new bootcamps we added to the Course Report directory this month! https://bit.ly/Coding-Bootcamp-News-June-2021
Scott Jones is a prolific and renowned entrepreneur, investor, businessman, educator and philanthropist. Having raised over $200 million for his companies, resulting in over $5 billion of investor returns, Scott created and/or co-founded the world's largest voicemail provider, the world's largest music and video database company (Gracenote, now a division of Nielsen), one of the world's most innovative autonomous robotic vehicle products, the first successful virtual assistant (which correctly answered billions of questions in real-time better than Siri or Alexa), and now, one of the world's top-ranked software development and cybersecurity full-immersion training programs, known as Eleven Fifty Academy. In this fun, expansive and insightful episode, we welcome Scott Jones as our 50th guest and the first episode of season 3. While we cover lots of topics (including Scott's new tattoo), we barely scratch the surface about Scott's significant accomplishments, and the vast array of companies Scott has founded. That said, we also chat about artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles (and lawnmowers), how Eleven Fifty Academy is solving the tech talent problem in the Midwest, and Scott's trillion-dollar idea, the Career Accelerator Fund. In the final episode of the year I had the pleasure and honor to chat with an old friend, colleague, and former boss, Dewand Neely of the Eleven Fifty Academy. Dewand is the former CIO for the State of Indiana. I have known him for well over a decade. I first worked with Dewand when he was a manager at IOT and I was a newly appointed Sergeant with the Indiana State Police. Over the years I was extremely fortunate to work with and for him. At Eleven Fifty he is the Chief Operations Officer where he has been working hard to expand not only the coding academy but the cybersecurity academy. During our conversation we were able to catch up a bit, talk about the cybersecurity academy/range, and reminisce about the trade delegation to Israel in 2016. If you have read Scott Jones' resume, you know he never stops innovating. Living out the mantra "Whatever it freaking takes," Scott has been a leader in the tech industry since his twenties. Scott was born in Louisville and moved to Indianapolis with two years left of high school. With the initial desire to be a doctor, Scott then began school at Indiana University. His curiosity about how the world and technology works resulted in six years in Bloomington with plenty of credits, but not enough in one major. Still hungry to learn more, Scott maneuvered his way into M.I.T. without an undergraduate degree. It was across the street from M.I.T. that Scott and his business partner Greg Carr founded their famous voicemail technology. Although Boston Technology was a great success, Scott never stopped using technology to solve problems. Now, Scott is well known for ventures, including ChaCha, Gracenote, Precise Path Robotics, and Eleven Fifty Academy. Not to mention his MTV Cribs worthy smart house. Tune in to learn about Scott's voicemail technology, what happened to ChaCha and its data, and how Scott is evolving Indianapolis' tech ecosystem with Eleven Fifty Academy. On this episode, we On this episode, we interview Sean Hendrix, the Director of Emerging Technology Partnerships for the Purdue Research Foundation and the managing director of the Indiana 5G Zone. We're discussing the latest public private initiatives to drive 5G implementation and innovation here in Indiana, the Indiana 5G Zone. The Indiana 5G Zone will occupy 3,000 square feet within the 24,000-square-foot downtown Indianapolis headquarters of the Eleven Fifty Academy, a non-profit educational entity that helps professionals upskill and launch careers in technology. Co-locating the Indiana 5G Zone here will integrate the 5G infrastructure and testing facilities within the academy’s immersive coding and cybersecurity training programs. The facility is being established by the Indiana 5G Forum, which has developed to include several notable stakeholders, including AT&T, Verizon, Purdue University, Eleven Fifty Academy, Indiana IoT Lab - Fishers, Battery Innovation Center, Wabash Heartland Innovation Network (WHIN), Energy Systems Network, Indiana University, and the University of Notre Dame with the intent to add more partners from near and far. The Indiana 5G Zone is sponsored as part of a strategic initiative established in partnership with the Indiana Economic Development Corporation to leverage Indiana’s developing digital infrastructure to catalyze innovation and support rapidly-developing companies. The Indiana 5G Zone will offer businesses, universities, government, and research institutions the ability to book fee-for-service lab space at the facility, leveraging its unique 5G network infrastructure to develop and test new technologies, products or service applications, while also having access to shared spaces for programming and events. It will be the first node of what will become a statewide 5G-related resource network. Special Guest: Sean Hendrix.

In a previous episode (https://www.veterancast.com/9) about the Eleven Fifty Academy, we interviewed Marine Veteran John Qualls about the opportunities for Veterans in the technology industry. Since that time, the Eleven Fifty Academy has historically acquired approval from the federal government for GI Bill usage. We returned to the Eleven Fifty Academy to speak to David Whitt, the first GI Bill graduate of the Eleven Fifty Academy, and Shawn Gardner, Eleven Fifty's Executive Vice President of Business Development about turning Veterans into Developers. We discuss how training in development is a perfect career path for Veterans to enter the technology sector - either as a coder, project manager, or other supporting leadership position. We also discuss the incentives for Veterans to move to Indiana to take advantage of this opportunity. Within just a few months, academy training in the technology field can open job opportunities that pay well above averages for Veterans. And within a few years, those careers drive some of the highest incomes under demand in the country. Special Guests: David Whitt and Shawn Gardner.
If there was an Indiana innovation version of Mount Rushmore, one face on the mountain would undoubtedly be Scott Jones. The technology veteran is back in his home state (for the most part) and focused on Eleven Fifty Academy and the coding bootcamps it offers to a growing number of students. Jones weighs in on the impact of past topics – Daylight Saving Time, direct flights and state scorecards – as well as current issues regarding talent and connectivity.

And…we’re back! Powderkeg: Igniting Startups returns after a brief hiatus with something of an experiment ahead of season two of the podcast. (We’re calling it an “in-between-isode.”) This show features a Q&A-meets-pitch event featuring one veteran entrepreneur and two founders who are earlier in their journey and have exciting startups of their own. Our first guest is Scott Jones, a serial tech entrepreneur and investor who’s perhaps best known as the inventor of voicemail (yes, you read that right), co-founder of Gracenote and ChaCha, and Chairman of the Indianapolis-based coding bootcamp Eleven Fifty Academy. Joining him are two entrepreneurs from Cincinnati: Summer Crenshaw, co-founder and COO of the recruitment app Tilr, and Ry Walker, CEO of the data engineering platform Astronomer. After diving into a few of the highlights and key lessons from Scott’s storied career, we give Summer and Ry a chance to pitch their companies and receive real-time feedback and actionable advice. In the process, Scott shares his expert strategies that should be of use to every entrepreneur, such as how to disrupt your space by “cross-pollinating” ideas from other industries and when to explore new business ideas versus when to go all-in on your best one. (P.S. All three of our guests will also be featured at the upcoming Fuse50 conference in Cincinnati on May 17, which we’re hosting in collaboration with Cintrifuse. This is part of Powderkeg’s new event series designed to help “fuse” together all of the awesome tech hubs growing and thriving outside Silicon Valley. In this episode with Scott Jones, Summer Crenshaw and Ry Walker, you’ll learn: --- How Scott became a successful serial entrepreneurial by always thinking outside the box (5:26) --- The secret to learning quickly and innovating in a space that’s brand new to you (10:25) --- How tilr is using tech to disrupt an industry that’s stuck in its ways (17:13) --- Tried-and-true tips for cross-pollinating ideas between industries (26:15) --- Why Astronomer thinks it’s time for a revolutionize data collection and management (28:50) --- Expert advice on when to explore new ideas and when to put your eggs in one basket (34:52) --- The most important things to do when you start scaling your company (42:37) --- If you like this episode, please subscribe and leave us a review on iTunes. Applications are only as secure as the network architecture and operating systems in which they operate. It is only a matter of time before services, networks, or applications are targeted by bad actors even if they are not directly exposed to the public Internet. In this seminar we will discuss some of the patterns seen in secure application development and the anti-patterns that should be avoided. Then we will examine how to best implement these practices both as an individual and within organizations throughout the software development lifecycle. About the speaker: Michael Taylor is the lead software developer at Rook Security, an Indianapolis-based provider of global IT security solutions that monitors, detects, and remediates cybersecurity threats worldwide. Michael directs the development unit at Rook Security, which creates custom programs to enable the integration of disparate solutions in a client's existing inventory. Michael and his team also invest their efforts in the creation of new data analysis tools for Rook Security to gain new threat intelligence and make smarter security recommendations to its client base. He is an instructor at the Eleven-Fifty Academy and an active participant in the open source community. Michael earned his bachelor's degree in Information Technology from Western Governors University.
