This week, in Elko, Nevada, a ranch hand, who everyone calls "Turkey", with a shady history goes missing, and everyone thinks he just took off. Until he's found face down in a river. The evidence says he's been there for a while, and all leads back to a local couple, who may have been collecting people's insurance policies for future murders! But is there enough evidence to actually get a conviction??Along the way, we find out that there are rules to where a brothel can operate, that transient robbers wouldn't neatly put your wallet back in your pocket, and that there are some things that you shouldn't tell your sister in law!!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering is an incredible event that has been happening since 1985. This year marks the 37th annual Gathering, albeit virtual. Every year, up until now, Cowboys and lover’s of Western Culture gather in Elko Nevada to celebrate, and learn about the rich and diverse history of the West. I was super bummed to hear that the event wasn’t going to happen this year, however I totally understand. We’ve all missed out on so much live music in the course of this pandemic, and the Elko Gathering was no exception. I wanted to put together a piece for my radio show that reminds people of what a unique and valuable event this is. So I reached out to some of the performers and they recorded some stories and memories they have of Elko. Special thanks to Andy Hedges, Brenn Hill, and Mike Beck for sending in some audio. If you have the chance to attend the Gathering in the future I encourage you to do so. The sense of community is palpable, and it’s a generous and encouraging place to be. You’ll learn a lot, and most likely make some new friends.

Gold mine worker Greg Vaught tells folklorists Meg Glaser and Charlie Seemann from the Western Folklife Center about how he came to work at a gold mine and his various mine jobs, including being the mine safety officer. He explains how he started using his musical talents to write humorous songs about mine safety and has become Newmont mining’s unofficial “Safety Troubadour.” And he sings an example of his work!

I recently had a chance to talk on the phone with Cowboy Songster Andy Hedges. I first became aware of Andy at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko Nevada in 2019. I was impressed with his guitar playing, singing, and general knowledge of Cowboy and Western Culture. He was born in Lubbock Texas in 1980. The son of a school teacher, and a former rodeo Cowboy turned preacher, Andy grew up engrossed in the stories of the West. He currently records music, produces a podcast, gathers and performs Cowboy Poetry, and performs with legendary songwriters like Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Ian Tyson, and Dom Flemmons. We had a great conversation about his work.
In this first part of my coverage of the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko Nevada we hear from to incredible musicians, Jamie Fox, and Tish Hinojosa. Enjoy!
The first weekend in February found us the high desert town of Elko Nevada for what proved to be a weekend that will stay etched in our memories forever. We had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Ned Ledoux while he was in town performing a couple shows for the 35th annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. From the moment we sat down to the conclusion of the interview Ned in his own way put us at ease and made the next hour or so fly by with stories of his childhood growing up on the ranch in Wyoming and how he got started in music by playing a set of drums in the basement. We of course talked about what it was like having the legendary Chris Ledoux for a father and honestly we weren't surprised at how close the apple falls from the tree. Ned is as genuine as they come and lives his life committed to the western way of life, faith in God and family and telling stories through his music. There's no doubt he will " Never Change". Be sure to watch for Ned's new album coming out this fall! Thank you Ned from the bottom of our hearts for spending some time with us and sharing your stories. We look forward to crossing paths with you again. https://www.instagram.com/nedledoux/ https://nedledoux.com
