Penn Station East Coast Subs celebrates its 40th anniversary this year! Lance Vaught joined founder Jeffrey Osterfeld in 2002 as a franchise adviser charged with improving unit performance. “I really connected with the challenges and concerns of small business operators and saw our franchisees more as brand ambassadors," Lance tells us. What started in 1985 as a small bagel shop and delicatessen in Dayton Ohio has grown into a 320-unit group of businesses located in 14 states. "I like to think our continued success and growth is due to the respect we show our guests and franchisees every day," says Vaught. Penn Station East Coast Subs demonstrates its respect for its guests by its commitment to value. Lance explains “A value experience is offering really good quality, consistently served by a friendly staff at a reasonable price.” Penn Station values its large group of franchisees and demonstrates that by respecting their return on investment (ROI). "We continue to review the capital investment requirements and work tirelessly to improve our franchisee's unit profit, says Vaught. In this episode, we learn how to properly structure a franchise advisory council (FAC) and how engaging with the Penn Station FAC has led to improvements in concept size and efficiency, purveyor selection and marketing as well as the integration of technology. The menu has grown slightly from the original four sandwiches, hand-cut french fries and freshly made lemonade to include salads, wraps and specials….but ownership's commitment to a valuable experience remains the same. “Our franchisees are carefully selected," Lance tells us, "we take our time to be certain they are compatible with our vision and values...after all, we aren't building a business, but growing a family of brand ambassadors!"
Public schools are one of the last remaining universal public goods in the United States—and are also some of our most unequal institutions. In Unsettling Choice, Ujju Aggarwal explores how the expansion of choice-based programs led to greater inequality and segregation in a gentrifying New York City neighborhood during the years following the Great Recession, mobilizing mechanisms rooted in market logics to recruit families with economic capital on their side while solidifying a public sphere that increasingly resembled the private. Here, Aggarwal is joined in conversation with Sabina Vaught.Ujju Aggarwal is assistant professor of anthropology and experiential learning at The New School. You're gonna need a hot shower with an abrasive loofah sponge after listening to this one. It's another wild ride with Hawk as he continues to delve into the twisted minds of far-right Christian nationalists hellbent on establishing a real-life Gilead (not the land of milk and honey one, rather the one where everyone is evil). First up is Russell Vaught, a "battle-tested bureaucrat" who wants to turn the presidency into an absolute dictatorship if Trump gets re-elected. With his "radical constitutionalism" agenda, Vaught dreams of mass deportations, criminalizing abortion nationwide, and unleashing the military on American soil to crush dissent. What a sweetheart. But wait, there's more! We also meet the Society for American Civic Renewal (SACR for short), a creepy men's club that wants to create a patriarchal Christian ethnostate. Their goals include expelling non-Christians, stripping LGBTQ rights, and reviving feudalism à la apartheid South Africa. And it's all run by a shampoo mogul calling himself the "Maximum Leader" from his poetically named "Howdy Doody Good Times Foundation." You can't make this stuff up! First a pillow guy and now a shampoo guy? What's next, the truck nuts guy?In the end, Hawk is left feeling spiritually polluted after diving down this unsettling rabbit hole of white Christian extremism. At least these wackos provide unintentional comic relief amidst their chilling authoritarianism and hate-filled bigotry. It's both hilarious and terrifying how these wealthy radicals are dead serious about their unhinged fantasies of religious ethnic cleansing. Catherine Townsend continues her investigation into the death of Gail Vaught. On the morning of Friday, October 17, 1980, a man was on his way to work, driving his truck down Highway 16 that runs between Siloam Springs, Arkansas near the Oklahoma border through the Ozark National Forest near Searcy when he saw something out of the corner of his eye down a small dirt road. It looked like a person lying in the road. The driver doubled back and saw to his horror that it was the body of a young woman, lying rolled over on her right side with her head and shoulders face down. She was very tall and had a flannel shirt on and a blue Michelin jacket that had been pulled over her face, her legs were slightly open, and she was naked from the waist down except for a pair of torn and filthy white socks. She started out being a Jane Doe. But soon, police ID'd the victim as 21-year-old Gail Vaught. Was she sexually assaulted? Could that crime scene have been staged? Could her death have connections to drug dealing or domestic violence or something else?
