Form of singing
POPULARITY
Yodel-ay-hee ... what?! Those famed yodeling calls that for centuries have echoed through the Alps, and more recently have morphed into popular song and folk music, could soon reap a response—from faraway Paris. Switzerland's government is looking for a shout-out from the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO, based in the French capital, to include the tradition of yodeling on its list of intangible cultural heritage. A decision is expected by year-end. Modern-day promoters emphasize that the yodel is far more than the mountain cries of yesteryear by falsetto-bellowing male herders in suspenders who intone alongside giant alphorn instruments atop verdant hillsides. It's now a popular form of singing. Over the last century, yodeling clubs sprouted up in Switzerland, building upon the tradition and broadening its appeal—with its tones, techniques, and tremolos finding their way deeper into the musical lexicon internationally in classical, jazz, and folk. U.S. country crooners prominently blended yodels into their songs in the late 1920s and 30s. About seven years ago, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts became the first Swiss university to teach yodeling. "For me, actually, in Switzerland we have four languages but I think really we have five languages. We have a fifth: The yodel," said Nadja Räss, a professor at the university, alluding to the official German, French, Italian, and Romansh languages in Switzerland. Yodeling exists in neighboring Austria, Germany, and Italy, but Swiss yodeling is distinctive because of its vocal technique, she said. In its early days, yodeling involved chants of wordless vowel sounds, or "natural yodeling," with melodies but no lyrics. More recently, "yodeling song" has included verses and a refrain. The Swiss government says at least 12,000 yodelers take part through about 780 groups of the Swiss Yodeling Association. In Switzerland, Räss said, yodeling is built on the "sound colors of the voice" and features two types: one centering on the head—with a "u" sound—and one emanating from deeper down in the chest—with an "o" sound. Somehow, we limit ourselves to only five strips this episode. Seems impossible, but we actually did it. Brooke (Dillman) found a short run on one topic that, while only five-strips in length, carried all the fury-inducing content of a dozen or more ordinary strips. The journey begins with Ginger (Xiulan's friend whom we met at Xiulan's wedding to Hugh) and Gerald (the guy from the wedding she's now apparently involved with), who is apparently her boss. She seduces him on his own desk and Xiulan walks in on them, informing them that all of the people in the building next door are watching them with binoculars. Neither of them has so much as unbuttoned one button, so they're as covered up as can be, but somehow this behavior is enough to encourage dozens of people to get their binoculars out of their desks (naturally, I suppose?) so they can watch them. Everything gets kicked up a notch when Edda and Amos try to introduce Fleurrie and Sven to Xiulan and Hugh. The simple introduction of couples results immediately in Fleurrie and Xiulan simultaneously sticking their tongues out at each other. Fleurrie adds, while she does so, "Mine's bigger," referring obviously to the size of her husband. Sven then asks Fleurrie about what he thought he heard her say, which was "mine's's bigger," which of course makes no sense and no one would ever say. Fleurrie assures him it was only a typo and the editor caught it. Sven is stunned to discover they have an editor (as are we), so stunned in fact that his eyes point in two different directions. Xiulan then sends a question to Uncle Ethel (Thorax), asking for clarification the apostrophe's in the word "mine's's" which she claims to have heard used recently. But of course no one said "mine's's" around her at all. She types her question to Uncle Ethel on her computer and he responds immediately from his manual typewriter, sending back a single character, which is either a comma or an apostrophe. Neither would work as a punchline, of course, and neither really makes any sense. But that's par for the course in a run of strips where two people talk about a contraction that literally no one said. I mean, what the fuck? What is yodeling, anyway? Some consider it singing, some say it's an ululation, and still others consider it merely a means to herd animals. Whatever yodeling is, one thing's clear: Yodeling has been around for thousands of years and shows no signs of disappearing. This hour, we speak with a musicologist, a DJ, and a professional singer about this age-old vocal practice. This episode is dedicated to Tug. I know this is typically an anti-pet podcast, but I (Angela) have spent the last few weeks worried about my dog Tug. When this episode was recorded I was sure there was going to be a cure for whatever was wrong with him. Just before sitting down to write this episode description I received a call that Tug got 15 pounds of fluid drained from his abdomen and the vet still does not know what is wrong with him. They aren't running any more tests. At this point we are just hoping for the best. Tug is my best friend and favorite being to ever exist. The first night I had him he fell asleep on my lap, belly up and I cried because I had never felt a love like that. That first night he slept in my bed and took up most of it. The next morning he woke me up at 5 AM and took a big sh*t in the corner of the room. I was annoyed, but I knew nothing he could do could make me stop loving him. To this day, the first thing I do when I see him is sit down on the floor so he can lay down in my lap, belly up. Tug is the biggest love of my life. Since I got that first phone call telling me he was sick whenever I think about him it's like I can feel him. I can feel his muzzle being held in my hand right before I give him a smooch on the nose. I can feel his back pushed up against me as we lay on the kitchen floor, him the little spoon and me the big. He is 12 or 13 now, I really can't remember. But I will always remember how much comfort he brought me and how much love he taught me I was capable of giving. I am sorry that I do not have anything funny to say. I just had to tell someone, anyone, how much I love my dog. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicheties/message

I met an interesting character the other day. She climbed out of the passenger seat of Chevy Trail Blazer wearing spurs. Also, I think yodeling sucks, for the record.

Recovery can often leave you feeling like you're caught between a rock and hard space. What stands between you and your healing can leave you feeling alone on an unmovable mountain. Yodeling for help in a deep, empty canyon. The space between illness and recovery can be bridged by medication, therapy and belief. Yet so many doubt they can make it. Looking at life through shit-colored glasses, will leave you running on a hamster wheel with smelly shoes. Us light chasers often fall prey to the dark. We give of ourselves, often to the point of utter exhaustion and emptiness. Our identities are so invested in our being helpful or looked upon to answer the call. We feel like we have no one that can help move this boulder out of our paths. It's up to us to take care of the earth mover. Maintenance on your vehicle is absolutely necessary to the life of your ride. Self-care, is the answer for our human machine. Checking in with meditation, exercise, rest, healthy food and stress reduction, help us remove the build up in our cylinders, blow the fuel out the carb and let the motor sing. Thanks for listening to this week's episode. A huge shout out to Kevin Maloney. Kevin wrote our new music. He is the guitarist and songwriter for the Final Sleep. He was also in the seminal Albany hardcore band, Withstand. He is a very close friend of the show and the hosts. Don't forget we will be part of 2022 inaugural Nipperfest. Saturday July 23rd at the Music Haven in Central Park, Schenectady, NY. 11a-10p. AGP will be part of the second Upstate Punk Rock Flea Market at Empire Live Albany NY, Sunday, May 22nd 12-6p. This is a great all ages event. We will have tons of resources for you. The first one was killer. Come to our table at either event and have a real conversation about mental health.
