My guest this week is Kim Snider. Kim is a wife, mother, and grandmother. She has been appointed as a missionary of Assemblies of God World Mission since 1986. She is the founder of MOMS magazine, a publication for Filipino women as well as the permanent non-resident faculty Asia Pacific Theological Seminary. Kim also has a Ph.D. in intercultural education and is also the Author of 3 books for Filipino women. When Kim found out her son had cancer her life turned into a living nightmare. This journey was full of fear, anger terror, but God was faithful through it all. Connect with Kim at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2349425852009095/ Email Kim: kim.snider@agmd.org Key Bible Verse: Bible Verse: Key verses: Hebrews 11: 1-3 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible."
Today’s Topic: Eating for health from the inside out Kim and I have been guinea pigs for a lot of different diets. Right now I eat keto style and fast for 16 hours a day whereas Kim fasts for 24 hours once every week or two. In this episode we talk about the benefits of fasting (it’s great for gut health and losing body fat) plus Kim tells us her views on bacon - particularly the non-organic kind. We also cover Chalene Johnson’s cloud bread (so good!) and talk about the new products from Kim’s company that she’s absolutely obsessed with. One of them is a collagen bone broth with extra vitamin C. Kim’s been making bone broth once a week for years, and it’s such a pain in the ass to make. First you have source organic, non-GMO bones and then it’s two days of cooking and you have to strain it, which gets kind of messy. So Kim’s super happy about being able to buy quality bone broth. And, special offer! Whatever kind of diet you follow, Kim would love to create a personalized supplement protocol for you. You can email or DM her on Instagram. Welcome to Free Thinking Friday, a brief episode where discuss some of the things I’ve been pondering throughout the week. I was alarmed when I woke up and read an article one of my friends posted on Facebook. It talked about the link between Alzheimer's and menopause. At the end of the article, almost as a footnote, they mentioned that no one had yet studied how this affects breast cancer patients on hormone-blocking drugs. I felt like I was going to hyperventilate. The article said that surgical removal of the ovaries increases the risk of Alzheimer's by 70%... This was not exactly the statistic I wanted to wake up to. I did a little digging to see what else I could find about this menopause/Alzheimer's link, and I'm chatting about that research on this week's episode. I also shared an article that discussed why your personal trainer should be as important as your financial advisor. Both of these topics are related, and I hope you enjoy this episode. Welcome back to Six Minute Sex Ed, the podcast that helps families talk about sex and relationships, hosted by Sex Education teacher, Kim Cavill: https://www.teaandintimacy.com/ This episode is Level Two, which makes it more complex than my level one episodes and perfect for tweens, teens, and adults. This week we’re going to talk about Gilead Sciences’s profiteering from PrEP: This is June, which means it’s Pride month. June is Pride month as a commemoration of the Stonewall Riots, which happened in June of 1969. To learn more about the Stonewall Riots, check out this link: https://www.hrc.org/blog/stonewall-at-50-remembering-importance-of-riots-pride-and-visibility In honor of Pride month, I’m going to talk about Gilead Science’s profiteering off of Truvada, also known as PrEP, which is an really important HIV prevention drug. For more information about PrEP and how it works, listen to episode 22, HIV prevention, and check the updated show notes for that episode with information about PrEP, including patient assistance programs in your state. I’m celebrating Pride month in this way because, for decades, the history of the LGBTQIA community is one of fierce, passionate, joyful survival in the face of multiple kinds of oppression: state-sponsored discrimination, social stigmatization, medical disenfranchisement, religious exclusion, corporate profiteering. That struggle isn’t over. It never ended. It’s going on right now. Gilead Sciences is a pharmaceutical company that holds the patent for Truvada, or PrEP, which is the only FDA approved version of the drug available in USA. The current sticker price for PrEP in the US is $1,780 a month –– or $21,360 per year. To read more about this, check out the following links: From the Washington Post: An HIV treatment cost taxpayers millions. The government patented it. But a pharma giant is making billions - https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/pharma-giant-profits-from-hiv-treatment-funded-by-taxpayers-and-patented-by-the-government/2019/03/26/cee5afb4-40fc-11e9-9361-301ffb5bd5e6_story.html?utm_term=.13cf30298696 Also from the Washington Post: Gilead CEO insists federal government patent for HIV prevention pill Truvada is invalid - https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/gilead-ceo-insists-federal-government-patent-for-hiv-prevention-pill-truvada-is-invalid/2019/05/16/7c0a79b6-77e1-11e9-b3f5-5673edf2d127_story.html?utm_term=.4ef8cae7e986 From NPR: AIDS Activists Take Aim At Gilead To Lower Price Of HIV Drug PrEP - https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2019/05/30/727731380/old-fight-new-front-aids-activists-want-lower-drug-prices-now?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_term=nprnews&utm_campaign=npr Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez questions Gilead Sciences about their patent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ma2FvPTi5uQ Break the Patent: https://breakthepatent.org/ I’m dedication this episode to this issue because this issue makes me so angry. It makes me angry that many state governments, and the federal government, continue to sanction discriminatory policies including prohibiting trans people from serving in the military according to their gender identity and the institution of no promo homo laws which prevent teachers in many areas of the US from portraying LGBTQIA+ people in a positive light, It makes me angry that people continue to stigmatize LGBTQIA+ people, that churches exclude them, that medical institutions deny them healthcare, corporations like Gilead sciences make billions in profit from making necessary products inaccessible. So...what do you want for Pride Month? I know what I want. I want Gilead Sciences to release the patent for Truvada and make Prep available for everyone who needs it. Happy Pride! In this episode, Nathan and Kim Laughton discuss: Kim’s role at Schwab Charitable How donor-advised funds work Charitable giving trends Kim’s career track and what fuels her mission to increase giving at Schwab Charitable Advice Kim would give to her 20-year-old self. Key Takeaways: Every dollar matters and everyone can make an impact by giving to charity. Start giving early in life, even if it is volunteer time rather than money. You can have it all, but not necessarily all at the same time. Figure out what you want in life, be patient and don’t compromise. Embrace optimistic realism – look forward to the future, but be grounded in your present. "It’s the marrying of the heart and the mind, when it comes to giving, that can make it the most satisfying." — Kim Laughton Connect with Kim Laughton: Kim Laughton, President Schwab Charitable 211 Main Street San Francisco, CA 94105 Email – Kim.Laughton@schwabcharitable.org Company Website – www.schwabcharitable.org Connect with Nathan Mersereau: Phone: 248-645-1520 Website: www.dayinacanoe.com Email: nathan.mersereau@planningalt.com Twitter: @NathanMersereau LinkedIn: Nathan Mersereau Address: 36800 Woodward Avenue, Suite 200 Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304 Show Notes by Podcastologist/Show Producer: Chelsea Taylor-Sturkie Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Vocational Show notes What is a vocation? You're life's purpose, which doesn't always mean that it's your job. One person's life purpose might be to make people laugh, another's purpose might be to be a parent, and still others might be to coach Doug's story What did you want to be when you grew up when you were a kid? When did you come to understand what you're calling was? How do you experience fulfillment? Kim's story Kim was given the following quote by her mentor in college: “Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Those questions took her all over the country and through a number of different jobs. Tips for finding your calling. Say yes to the things that intrigue you and try not to do something out of fear. If skydiving is your thing but yet you have a fear of heights. You'll need to conquer your fear first or you'll risk losing the chance of ever skydiving. You have to challenge your fears. Keep an open mind and don't be rigorous with plans. Make plans to break them. Ditch the dreams and expectations of others for you. Be greedy for your journey. Find like-minded people that are on the journey too. Talk to others, seek out advice, and ask those around you for direction. You don't have to act on their advice but listen and evaluate. You never know, someone close to you may see something in you that you never saw within yourself. Start the conversation sooner rather than later – the journey might be long. Ask yourself would you do this for free. Don't put a time-frame on your journey. Doug's book: One Percent Better is available on Amazon.
