Behavioral economics has given us a lot of insights into how we can influence our own and other's behavior. But the approach has some serious limitations, especially when applied to promoting health behaviors.Joining me on the podcast is Michelle Segar, a frequent guest here on the Change Academy. Michelle is an NIH-funded researcher at the University of Michigan. She's also a best-selling author and health coach whose work focuses on fostering behavior change that can survive the complexity and unpredictability of the real world.TakeawaysTake some time on a regular basis to reflect on how your personal values, beliefs, and motivations align with your desired behavioral changes (and vice versa!)Acknowledge emotional and psychological issues that may present barriers to change. Consider seeking support from a mental health professional, especially if you face challenges like depression, anxiety, or past trauma.Take a look at your social and physical environment and think about how these factors impact your behavior. Consider where you might find supportive communities or how altering your environment might encourage positive habits.Consider getting involved with community initiatives or advocacy groups that are working to address broader societal issues that impact our ability to choose healthier behaviors. For example, groups advocating to make our cities and neighborhoods more walkable or bike-friendly, or organizing mobile farmer's markets, or upgrading local recreational facilities. Oh boy, do we have a treat for you today! Our team here at Read-Aloud Revival has been hard at work on a brand new booklist for you and I've invited Kortney Garrison and Kara Anderson from the RAR team back to this side of the podcast to tell you all about it.Nature study can be an intimidating subject that carries a lot of expectations in the homeschooling world. It's something we want to do, but it can get pushed to the side because we don't always have the energy to tramp around the woods with a watercolor set.So this project started with our team asking, how can we simplify nature study and make it more likely to happen? Could it really be as simple as reading a book and doing an activity? We think so! And that's where our brand new booklist and activity guide comes in.In this episode, you'll hear: Why we chose 12 books per season, and why you don't have to read them all How we paired books and activities to make them as accessible as we could How the guide brings know, do, and love to nature study Learn more about Sarah Mackenzie: Read Aloud Revival Waxwing Books Subscribe to the Newsletter Mentioned in This Episode: Get the Nature Study Booklist and Activity Guide RAR #220: Essentialism for Homeschoolers RAR #177: Teach Your Kids to Think Like a Scientist (with Books You Already Have) RAR #62: Inspiring a Love of Nature Through Books, Greta Eskridge
It's cold and flu season and doctors are already reporting more cases than we've seen in years. Naturally, the numbers were down the last few years because of COVID-19, but it's still worse than a couple of years before the pandemic. And researchers think they've finally figured out why we catch a cold and see more flu cases in the Winter months. Perhaps it's just simple science... GLORIA PREMA - The Simple Science Behind Near-Death Experiences - Near-death experiences (NDEs) are a fascination for many. It's hard to dispute that something happens when we die, because so many who have been brought back from the edge report a similar experience usually involving a "tunnel of light." No one has ever been able to explain this phenomenon - until now. Gloria Prema shares the simple, scientific explanation for the tunnel of light glimpsed by those who have brushes with death. But don't let the word "scientific" fool you, because Gloria will also demonstrate that science and spirituality are one and the same. What is the key to lasting motivation? Motivation is a topic that comes up a lot in our community. You want to eat right, read more, exercise daily, and meditate regularly. But talking about making a change is often easier than achieving long-term follow-through. I'm excited to have Dr. Michelle Segar on our show today to talk more about this topic. She's an award-winning motivation scientist and researcher at the University of Michigan. She's the author of No Sweat: How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness and she's here to talk about her new book, Joy Choice: How to Finally Achieve Lasting Changes in Eating and Exercise. There's a difference between reaching a goal and sustaining that behavior over time, and many of the paradigms and beliefs you might hold around habits are likely outdated or oversimplified. Listen in, as Dr. Segar dispels the many myths around habits and talks about her model for creating lasting change and sustained motivation. *** Do you want to stay up to date with every new episode and get my brand new Kwik Brain Accelerator Program? When it comes to introducing children to science, many of us have pre-conceived ideas often from our own childhood experiences. Many of the mums I speak with expect it to be costly, complicated and even dangerous. My school experience gave me a poor experience of science and I've always regretted that my teachers didn't encourage me more. Science can be an easy and fun activity for kids to do and explore their curiosity and you can get started when they are just toddlers. This week's guest, Dr Stephanie Ryan, Ph.D. is a chemist, author and a mom who uses her background to create educational products and content. She can be found helping young kids explore the fascinating world around them. Dr Stephanie has taught science to all age groups, helping toddlers learn about their world. You'll hear some great tips and ideas from Dr Stephanie to help get you started introducing your toddler or preschooler to the exciting world of science, using materials mainly found within your own home. And much more!So go ahead, my dear mum. Glorias' latest book is It's All Light: The Morphic Resonance of Light, A Unified Theory. - www.itsalllight.co.uk*** AND NOW ***The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.comThe ‘X' Zone TV Channel Radio Feed (Free - No Subscription Required) - https://www.spreaker.com/show/xztv-the-x-zone-tv-show-audio The ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewspaper.com (Free)To contact Rob McConnell - misterx@xzoneradiotv.com

For a quarter of a century, Michelle Segar has tried to crack the code on why some people lose motivation for healthy habits, and others don't. She's not interested in helping people change their behavior. No, she wants to help people sustain health-oriented behaviors. In part 3 of our behavior series, we get into the psychology and science of motivation. Michelle Segar, Ph.D., MPH is a behavioral sustainability scientist and author of No Sweat! How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness. She is Director of the Sport, Health, and Activity Research and Policy Center (SHARP) at the University of Michigan.
