Judith Collins: Defence Minister on the $12 billion budget for defence

The Government's promising to spend big in areas of defence, including improving its fleet in the air, and on the land, and sea. The long-awaited Defence Capability Plan was released yesterday afternoon, with $12 billion worth of public spending across four years – $9 billion of which is deemed new spending. It includes plans to bring defence spending up to two percent of GDP, with procurement for maritime helicopters, vehicles, and a replacement plane fleet. The Defence Minister is confident in the work done by Finance Minister Nicola Willis, reassuring they're not spending money New Zealand does not have. Judith Collins is also standing by changes making it easier to enter the armed forces. Since last year most Defence Force roles now only require three years of high school to Year 11, instead of passing Level One credits. More technical roles now only require a Level Two certificate. Collins told Mike Hosking being smart academically is helpful but isn't the first port of call. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Her husband, Kurt is a permanent deacon in the Diocese of Des Moines and teaches theology at the local Catholic high school, is a Level One catechist, and enjoys making materials for the atrium.  Their daughter, Clare, is the elementary faith formation coordinator at her Church, working in the Level One and Level Two atria. This book serves as a companion to the second volume, The Religious Potential of the Child 6 to 12 Years Old. Real Life:  How silly is Devon? According to him, not at all. But his big toe pain might argue otherwise. The jury is still out. Steven took a blacksmithing class, and it turns out, there's a whole process to it. Safety docs? Check. Appropriate clothing? Check. Payment going to the blacksmithing museum? Very cool. His first project? A letter opener—definitely not a shiv. (Side note: Can you just carry knives around? What if you're being particularly menacing?) Good news: Steven is now a Level One Blacksmith and qualifies for the Level Two class! There's even talk of a blacksmithing tournament and chili cookoff. Speaking of knives… does everyone remember sock knives? On a more serious note, Ben reflects on the passing of his neighbor, Ronna, and the challenge of timing at the end of life. A moment to acknowledge those we lose and the impact they have.   Future or Now:  Ben's Dive into the Desktop Metaphor Ben took us down a philosophical rabbit hole about the desktop metaphor in computing. How does it relate to capitalism? How did William Gibson envision computing? Are there better metaphors we should be using? If you want to dig deeper, here's some background reading: History of the Graphical User Interface Xerox PARC and DNLS from 1968 Liber Indigo - Metaphysical Prisoners of the Desktop MercuryOS and Jason Yuan's vision Steven's Reaction: Uh…what? Steven, caught off guard, tried to process it all. But then he found an interesting study: link. The question is: Are its findings really about gender differences, or are they tied more to familial and societal roles? Let's just say, we have some thoughts about the methodology. Book Club (But Make It TTRPG): Next Week's Read: Burning Chrome by William Gibson We had to shift things around this week since Ben had a family emergency. But next week, we're diving into Burning Chrome by William Gibson. Get ready for some cyberpunk goodness! Mothership: A Sci-Fi Horror TTRPG Review Instead of discussing books, we reviewed Mothership, the sci-fi horror RPG that Steven ran, with Devon as a player. Here's the rundown: The setup: A distress call leads the crew to a ship. The dilemma: Follow company orders or investigate the alien presence? The experience: Mystery, clues, and big decisions. The result: Devon said he'd play again—high praise! If you're into sci-fi horror with a heavy dose of corporate greed and existential dread, Mothership might be worth checking out. That's it for this week! As always, let us know your thoughts, and we'll see you next time for Burning Chrome and more weird, wonderful discussions.

However, a scathing survey by the Post Primary Teachers Association shows the vast majority are dissatisfied with the new material. Union President Chris Abercrombie told Kerre Woodham that resources were late and not good enough, with many exemplars being poorly done. He said many teachers were worried about how this is going to impact students and their outcomes. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

PLEASE READ BEFORE LISTENING To celebrate my successful completion of Yoga Nidra Level One, Level Two, Scriptwriting and Further Studies Training, this Moon Cycle's Wild Heart Tea is a very specially created Yoga Nidra. Yoga Nidra is a form of Deep Rest where nothing is asked of you. A practice of relaxing our state of awareness and entering into a dream-like comfortability. When listening to the recording, please make sure you can be somewhere that you will not be disturbed, and that all devices are on airplane mode with no vibrate, or turned off completely. Create yourself a luxurious and cosy nest - this can be on a bed, in a chair, on the floor, outside in the grass - whatever place will work best for you to feel comfortable and secure. You may want a favourite blanket to cover yourself with, a soft pillow for your head and under your knees. Experiment with what will help you feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible. Likewise, wear whatever will help in this regard too. There will be a series of invitations but everything is open to what feels alive for you in each moment. It is okay if your attention wanders away from my voice, let it land for you as feels right for you. I f thoughts come up that feel disruptive, gently guide yourself back into an awareness of my words. There is no way to get Deep Rest wrong! Each experience is uniquely for you. The recording will be about 33 minutes long and there will be moments of silence to give you a sense of spaciousness and unhurried time together, know I am still with you. If you need to move your body because you are in discomfort, please do so. If anything said in the Nidra feels uncomfortable for you, you can stop at any time. All you have to do, is return to the sensation of your breath, wiggle your fingers and toes and feel the ground beneath you as you open your eyes. Drop in and out as feels good for you to do so. If you fall asleep, don't worry at all. This is your practice to engage with as you wish, and perhaps sleep is exactly the rest you need right now. The Resting Tea invites you to create an intention to help support you for this coming moon cycle. Start to have a think about what you might wish this intention to be, but hold it loosely, don't let it be too rigid. Walk with it and see what simple sentence or word comes back to you time and again. The New Moon is in the astrological sign of Cancer, which manifests itself with feelings of safety related to the home and family. It offers the opportunity to forgive and forget, to let go of overthinking, to distance ourselves without feelings of bitterness. The invitation is to use these manifestations as a potential container for your intention. The Resting tea will take us on a little journey with our breath, around our body, out into space, and home to ourselves. Everything with Deep Rest is an invitation and there is never any enforced way of engaging with the Practice. Have a journal and pen ready for if you wish to take any notes afterwards. Also, have a favourite mug with your favourite tea ready for straight afterwards too. Get yourself comfortable, and we will begin. (Image by Daniel R. Diagnostics in Life Sciences is the Key to Healthcare w/ Mara Aspinall of Illumina Ventures  AZ TRT S05 EP12 (227) 3-24-2024    What We Learned This Week Diagnostics is the key to healthcare, identifying medical issues and designing the right treatment for the patient Five Levels of Diagnostics – Screening, Diagnosis, Prognosis, Interacting, & Monitoring Illumina Ventures is a life sciences venture capital firm with 35 companies in their portfolio Their investment companies deal in genomics, cancer testing, telehealth, at home testing & more Future of Biotech will be impacted by both AI and Nanotech     Guest: Mara G. Aspinall, Partner, Illumina Ventures  https://www.illuminaventures.com/ President and CEO, Health Catalysts Group Board Member of AZ Bio - https://www.azbio.org/   Mara Aspinall is a healthcare industry leader and pioneer with a commitment to civic involvement.     She is a Partner at Illumina Ventures, an independent, global healthcare venture capital firm focused on genomics and precision health investing including diagnostics and therapeutic products. Aspinall has deep roots in venture investing, having co-founded BlueStone Venture Partners in 2017. BlueStone has a strong portfolio of diagnostic, medical device, and digital health companies in the U.S. Southwest. Throughout her career, Aspinall has spearheaded initiatives to educate payers and policymakers on genomics and personalized medicine. She publishes the popular Sensitive and Specific: The Testing Newsletter and the annual Diagnostics Year in Review. This commitment to expanding knowledge inspired Aspinall to create and co-found the Biomedical Diagnostics master's degree program at Arizona State University, the only program dedicated exclusively to diagnostics, genetics, and genomics. Previously, Aspinall was President and CEO of Ventana Medical Systems, a billion-dollar division of TheRoche Group, (now Roche Tissue Diagnostics), a worldwide leader in the development and commercialization of tissue-based cancer diagnostics, where she led more than two dozen major instrument and assay launches and helped position the company as a global leader in companion diagnostics. Aspinall spent 13 years at Genzyme Corporation, where she served as President of Genzyme Genetics and Genzyme Pharmaceuticals. Aspinall transformed the business from a small, specialized player to one of the top five laboratories in the U.S. while setting the industry standard for quality testing. The business was sold to LabCorp for $1 billion in 2010. Aspinall also served as Founder and CEO of On-Q-ity, a start-up diagnostic company dedicated to circulating tumor cells. During the pandemic, Aspinall emerged as a national authority on COVID testing, serving as the principal investigator at Arizona State University on grants from The Rockefeller Foundation, creating TestingCommons.com and EvidenceCommons.com – internationally recognized interactive databases on COVID diagnostics and related research and clinical applications. Aspinall was named Arizona Biosciences Leader of the Year by the Arizona Bioindustry Association and one of “100 Most Inspiring People in Life Sciences” by PharmaVOICE magazine. Aspinall has extensive board experience. She has served on multiple public and private company boards in leadership roles over the last ten years. She is currently Chair of the Board of OraSure (OSUR) and Chair of the Nominating & Governance Committee of Castle Biosciences (CSTL). She also serves on the board of BlueCross BlueShield of Arizona. She holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, a BA in International Relations from Tufts University, and is certified in Cybersecurity Oversight from Carnegie Mellon/NACD.     Notes:   Seg 1 All of life sciences and biotech is healthcare. Diagnostics is the central organizing portion in healthcare, and consists of testing if needed. There are five (5) levels to diagnostics. Level One is Screening – where a patient may or may not be sick, check the health status, and also could be regular check ups for something pre-diagnosed.  Level Two is the Diagnosis - where tests are taken and then you see the results of the test. Level Three is the Prognosis – what symptoms does the patient have, and where you  need to go from here, what will happen with these symptoms. Level Four is a newer part called Interacting - This is where you can do personalized medicine and what's called theranostics or drug treatment. You combine drugs with the treatment. You have to analyze what type of drug is needed. What someone's body is like, how they metabolize drugs. What dose central levels are needed. People's reactions to drugs is not just body size or weight as suggested previously, but could be very much based on the genes. Level Five also new is called Monitoring - If disease treatment is over how do you monitor over the long term. What test do you take to confirm that there's been no return of the disease. Examples would be an MRD test which stands for a minimal residue disease.  You also may be doing things like CT scans or x-ray scans in the past, but sometimes these do not detect disease properly. Some cancers could be very small and you need a blood test. People may check in through cycles of a disease treatment also.   Seg 2 Regarding monitoring and Level Five using cancer as an example. People may go through 6 rounds of chemotherapy treatment. The doctor should monitor by round 3 and check is the tumor reduced or how is the chemo working.  Do you want to have benchmarks to see if you're reaching the health goals and if the medicine is effective. Future treatment might be biopsy of a tumor and testing glass to see what drug may work on it.  Revisiting Level Four in personalized medicine you may see in the future Chino metric analysis. Check the risk level for certain diseases so you can have a preemptive process to prevent potential predisposed diseases. This is level A. Level B would be when diagnosed with a disease, you check the tumor, mutations and genes checking both the DNA and RNA. Mara is on the board of AZ Bio (.org). The goal of AZ Bio is bringing educated people about biotech together to affect the state, the universities, and companies. Move research along with the responsibility to patients in the medical field. Mara is involved in venture capital which is critical, because it funds entrepreneurs in good companies to research and create Biotech product processes and products. There are other levels of investment, which typically start with friends and angel investing then move on to venture capital, and then private equity for really big rounds.  She was the founder of Blue Stone and they invested in Southwest companies.  In the fall of 2023 she became a partner at Illumina Ventures. They deal with 35 different companies. They've invested in all levels, biotech and genomics. You're looking for a VC to be specialized and knowledgeable about an industry so they can help the business grow provide it with money and add expertise.   Seg 3 Mara and Illumina Ventures recently put out a report - Diagnostics Year in Review. This report covers how did the industry is doing, what stocks earn money, what IPOs there were, financials, clinical, innovation, and mergers and acquisitions.   How does venture-capital work? Typically you have individual funds one through five. You raise money from investors and invest in new emerging companies. Companies may be doing research, drug development, or working other areas of life sciences.   Examples of companies in their portfolio: Delphi deals in cancer, diagnosis test and early screening for cancer and detection test. Level one screen checking for lung cancer and what early symptoms there are. Biopsy can be dangerous so you need other tests. Let's Get Checked - a telehealth online company that brings testing to the patient either at home or in an urgent care or ER. This is faster and easier. Examples of test are Covid test and STD test. Serimmune human immunity research company Genome Medical a genetic counseling company, working with patients to discuss what diseases they may be predisposed to, and ways to not pass it to the   Seg 4 Future of Biotech We saw with the pandemic, the rise of telemedicine with faster online diagnosis. We will also see in the future that AI changes drug development and reading tests The creation of better and faster equipment. The rise of nanotech, and early detection of diseases with blood samples - for example, at home blood draw.     Check out the Best of Biotech Show: Best of Biotech from AZ Bio & Life Sciences to Jellatech - BRT S04 EP26 (189) 7-2-2023   What We Learned This Week: AZ Bio mission to improve life sciences, & make AZ a Top 10 Bioscience state Aqualung Therapeutics is treating inflammation in the lungs, get people off ventilators & save lives Calviri is working on a Vaccine to PREVENT Cancer, currently largest animal clinical trial Anuncia Medical has a Re-Flow product to help drain fluid from the brain, treats Hydrocephalus Collagen 2.0 – Innovation to Gelatin & gummies   Full Show: HERE     AZ Tech Council Shows:  https://brt-show.libsyn.com/size/5/?search=az+tech+council *Includes Best of AZ Tech Council show from 2/12/2023   Tech Topic: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/category/Tech-Startup-VC-Cybersecurity-Energy-Science  Best of Tech: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/size/5/?search=best+of+tech     ‘Best Of' Topic: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/category/Best+of+BRT      Thanks for Listening. “In the seventh year, you might ask, ‘What will we eat in the seventh year? We have not planted nor have we harvested crops!' I will direct My blessing to you in the sixth year, and [the land] will produce enough crops for three years”. It states, “…you might ask, ‘What will we eat in the seventh year? We have not planted nor have we harvested crops!'” Only then Hashem responds with, “I will direct My blessing to you in the sixth year, and [the land] will produce enough crops for three years”. It appears that [only] if a person will ask what will be eat, thenHashem will activate His berachah. But what will happen if a person trusts in Hashem, fulfils all the mitzvot with a pure heart? He won't ask what will we eat! He is trusted to fulfil what the Torah commands him! Will such a person not have the assurance of, “I will direct My blessing”? Surely this cannot be the case! If so, why does the Torah relate the berachah specifically after the person asks, what shall we eat?

#809 Three Types of Competitors

More than a Few Words

Even new, completely innovative products have competition. Long before your product comes into the market, customers have found ways to solve their problems. Understanding who your real competitors are is critical to your business success. As you analyze your competitors, it can be helpful to think about the three levels of competition. Level One. These companies solve the customer's problem with products or services that are very similar to yours. While you may have enhanced features or slightly different offerings, it is likely an uninformed consumer will assume your products are interchangeable. Level Two. These companies offer an alternative solution to your customer's problem. On the surface, they may not appear to be a direct competitor because the product or service is dramatically different. If, however, this alternative solution solves your customer's problem, it is a competitor. Level Three. These companies or products do not solve the same problem at all, but compete for your customer's limited resources. Your business may not have competitors in every category, but you have some. As you think about the solution you provide from your customer's perspective, why would they choose one of the alternative solutions? Price? Habit? Unless you understand why they are making the choice, it will be difficult to help them choose you instead. A competitive analysis is just one part of your overall business plan Ready to update yours?   Check our our new Self-Paced Business Plan Workshop

Sperm donation has been around since the 1950s and has helped build countless families for people with male factor infertility and/or for women without male partners. When it started, and in the decades that followed, most sperm donors were anonymous and many people who used sperm donors were actually discouraged from telling their offspring that they were conceived this way. But, as donor conception grew, so did the data and feedback from this group, who often demanded to know their genetic roots. On this pregnantish podcast, Andrea interviews two women, Sydney Sharon & Hayley Darknell-King, who live in different countries but share a similar experience of learning as adults that their biological dads were sperm donors. Sydney's dad was a sperm donor in the 1980s and Hayley was conceived, via sperm donation, during the same period. Both women know sperm donation from another perspective, too, as women in lesbian marriages who relied on sperm donation to build their respective families. This episode explores Sydney and Hayley's personal stories and discoveries as they learned about their conception stories and DNA, how this information has positively changed their lives and/or made them question their identities, and how this information has shaped them as parents of donor conceived people today. This episode is sponsored by California Cryobank, which carefully selects the highest quality sperm donors to give clients the best possible opportunity for a safe and successful pregnancy. In fact, less than 1% of applicants can become a California Cryobank donor. Interested in starting your search?
