Michael D. Beys L. Ac., D.A.C.m. is a graduate of Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. His training consisted of over 3000 hours and holds a doctorate in the study of acupuncture and herbal medicine. He was supervising acupuncturist at RUMC's substance abuse Detox Center and South Beach Psychiatric Rehab facility. Currently, his practice focuses on fertility and women's health, pain management, and substance abuse mental health.In today's episode we talk about different ways we can heal our body naturally, women's health and pain relief with acupuncture. Studies have shown that with the insertion of acupuncture needles the body responds in certain ways. Once the needle penetrates the skin, the body responds by treating the needle as a foreign invader. This triggers the body's injury response. Since the needles are so fine and sterile, and the skin is swabbed with alcohol there is no injury or risk of infection. The injury response will divert the blood flow to the needle and increase circulation to the affected area. Today I'm talking to Jessica Salona and Elsa Pine, the creators of ZenPalz.com where they Share Mindfulness for kids through Meditation + Imagination. We have Rosie the unicorn in our home - and my daughter who is 5 absolutely loves her. I share in the episode how we practice meditation and mindfulness and Rosie is such a great tool for kids to do that. In this episode we share a lot of tips for raising children that are mindful. Studies show that the benefits of mindfulness for kids include: increased focus, attention, self-control, classroom participation, compassion, improved academic performance, ability to resolve conflict and overall well-being. I learned this breathing technique when I went for my health coaching training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. One of our teachers is Dr. Andrew Weill, and he pioneered this method and he describes it as a “natural tranquilizers for the nervous system” helping to quickly reduce tension and allowing the body to relax. The famous 478 breath- the relaxing breath. It’s a yogic technique.. You try to keep your tongue in the yogic position- touching the tip of the tongue to the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth and try to keep it there the whole time. You can do this exercise in any position- standing, lying or sitting but if you’re seated it’s good to keep your back straight and your feet on the floor. In this exercise You breathe in quietly through your nose to a count of 4 You hold your breath to a count of 7 Blow air out forcefully through your mouth (pffff) helps if you purse your lips out and you make a woosh sound. You have to commit to doing this at least twice a day, religiously. When I first started this practice I did it in the morning and at night to help me fall asleep. Now I do this breathing exercise like 5 times a day. You can do it more frequently if you want, but never more than 4 breath cycles at a time. At least for the first month. After a month if you’re comfortable with it you can increase to 8 breath cycles and that’s the absolute maximum. It’s desirable to slow down the whole exercise down, what limits you is how long you can comfortably hold your breath, but as you practice that you’ll get better and better at it. So you have to hold enough air for the 4 to last you the seven minutes. After doing this for 4-6 weeks, as you become familiar with this you can try using it for things… if someone pushes your buttons , you do this exercise before you react. If someone cuts you off in traffic, you can do this. It’s a great exercise to use when you have cravings- whatever- cigarette or candy. It’s a great way to help you fall asleep, if you get up in the middle of the night for any reason you can do this exercise and you’ll be able to fall asleep easier. After 2 months or 3 months of regular practice. There are very significant changes that happen in physiology. You will see wonderful changes in your body. This lowers heart rate, lowers blood pressure, improves digestion, it is a very powerful anti-anxiety measure. In fact much more powerful than the anti anxiety drugs that are commonly prescribed. It takes no time, needs no equipment … very time and cost effective. I highly recommend you make this your daily practice. Hope you enjoy! Have a blessed day. Love, Michaela P.S. There is a subtle but very potent shift that occurs when you pivot to better feeling thoughts and emotions. Let good feeling emotions gently align you feeling good. This is a super simple breathing technique (alternate nostril breathing) which helps to integrate the left and the right part of the brain, bringing more balance into your daily life. Other benefits: presence of now. Left brain is in charge of past and future, critical thoughts, language, analytical thought, balancing your checkbook, all important things. RIGHT brain- piece that is in charge of right now, inspiration, creativity and get creative problem solving ideas, and receiving downloads. You want these to work together in harmony. Alternate nostril breathing makes that happen. It also helps to oxygenate the blood and organs. The second part of this meditation is called Come To Your Senses + will truly bring you into the present moment, allowing all peace and happiness enter your state of being. A daily meditation practice is an investment that gets you happiness, quality sleep, creativity, better relationships, high performance and so much more. The more you practice, the more you are investing into your life. It doesn't cost anything, but the benefits are rich. TIPS: - Use this meditation preferably first thing in the morning + mid-afternoon. - Don't try to be perfect at this, especially if this is your first time. - You will never be able to completely stop your thoughts, so don't try.
