In this episode we review Ender's Game, what makes it so inspiring to generation after generation of readers, why Ender is so incredibly likeable, discuss empathy as a superpower, and talk about Orson Scott Card's bizarre and outspoken homophobia (and why you should get this book from the library or used book store as a result). As always, we also recommend and discuss some similar stories if you're looking for more great books to read. This week we recommend Speaker for the Dead (the sequel to Ender's Game), Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein, The Giver by Lois Lowry, and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.Youtube link if you'd prefer to watch the episode.NO SPOILERS BOOK SUMMARY: Ender's Game is the story of Ender Wiggin, a boy who is recruited into the elite orbital Battle School. There, young men and women are trained into the next generation of military leaders to command the forces of humanity against the buggers. The buggers are insect-like aliens who have attempted to invade the solar system twice, nearly wiping out humanity in the most recent invasion, and now humanity has sent fleets to attack the bugger worlds and try to avoid a 3rd invasion. Ender is a brilliant, empathetic kid, but has felt mostly alone his entire life. His older brother Peter is a violent sociopath, and only Ender's older sister Valentine prevented Peter from attacking Ender. Now, at battle school, Ender feels even more alone, surrounded by children older than himself and adults who are constantly pushing him to his limits and trying to force him to be violent in an attempt to either break him or mold him into the best military commander Earth has ever produced. NOTE - at the very end of this episode we discuss the twist and the ending of the book. We give you plenty of verbal notice before we talk about any spoilers, but we wanted to give you a heads up here as well just in case. Make sure to tune out at 30:44 if you haven't read the book yet and don't want to spoil anything. We're also excited to announce we've been named one of the best sci fi podcasts of 2022!

Ho Launchies! We've finally worked up the energy to discuss noted homophobe author Orson Scott Card in a conversation that addresses if it's possible to separate the artist from the art (spoilers: the answer is no).Still, Ender's Game is an undeniable classic and we both love it. There's so much to discuss: the xenocide, the treatment of boys and masculinity, how women exist solely to balance out men, childhood martyrdom, and the role of religion. Plus: Asa Butterfield's height, the infamous Battle School fight scenes, how badly Harrison Ford phones it in and debates about whether Viola Davis' Anderson is a made up character. Wanna connect with the show? Welcome, Discerning Listeners, to our 50th episode — our Season 1 Finale. For this landmark episode, we’re reviewing both the book *and* movie of the sci-fi classic…”Ender’s Game.” This is a story that has captivated three of us since high school, and now we’ve introduced it to Andruw as well. Join as we discuss the strategy, psychology, story progression, and character development, that goes into a tale about the importance of the child Ender Wiggin in Earth’s alleged survival against an advanced, interstellar enemy. We also discuss the political machinations of his slightly older siblings (at least as portrayed in the book, not the movie). The protagonist Ender Wiggin is pretty much the superstar of his own book, so our review is mostly about Ender himself and how the book gets you inside his head so that you can feel his brilliance, his drive, his fear, his frustration, his stress, and his sense of honor. But, we do also mention that part of the book is based in a city just one county east of us in real life. We do a quick analysis of the book’s title — about the extra meaning behind those two simple words. And, there’s also a discussion about the nature of the enemy, the insectoid Formics. As for the movie, we discuss the usual topics like performances & production quality, but we mostly compare it to the book — the differences in the kids’ ages, the difference in the Battle Room, the shifting around of storylines, etc. Grab your desk computer, your uniform, your flash suit, and an open mind for learning strategy as we get an education into…Ender’s Game. And, following our main discussion, we briefly reminisce about our favorite episodes from Discerning Geeks Portal - Season 1. If you’d like to catch up on what the four of us feel are our best episodes, here’s a handy compilation. #001 - Movie Review - The Martian #004 - Movie Review - Real Steel #007 - Movie Review - Sneakers #012 - Movie Review - Enemy Mine #016 - Water Ya Doin'? - Ocean/Beach/Water Themed Episode #020 - Movie Review - Killer Klowns From Outer Space #023 - Movie Review - The Adjustment Bureau #028 - Movie Review - Muppet Christmas Carol #032 - Movie Review - The Lake House #034 - Dungeons & Dragons One-Shot #01 - Part 1 #035 - Dungeons & Dragons One-Shot #01 - Part 2 #036 - Dungeons & Dragons One-Shot #01 - Part 3 #037 - Discussion Topic - Favorite Sci-Fi TV Characters - Part 1 #039 - Discussion Topic - Favorite Sci-Fi TV Characters - Part 2 #044 - TV Discussion - Best & Worst Series Finales - Part 1 (Best) #045 - TV Discussion - Best & Worst Series Finales - Part 2 (Worst) …And, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that #050 - Book & Movie Review - Ender’s Game will be among the best as well. In this episode of Analog Sci-Fi Book Reviews, I discuss with you my reading of Orson Scott Card's first novel that kicked off the Enderverse, Ender's Game! Winner of both the Hugo and Nebula winner in 1985 for Best Science Fiction Long Form Novel. In this 324 paged Masterpiece, we follow Ender Wiggin, a genius tactician, a third born, and maybe humanity's last hope against an Alien Invasion. In this story, Ender is a pawn in everyone's game. Even if he is only half aware of the decisions being made for him, Ender, a 'third born,' must justify his birth, as Earth has gone through dramatic societal changes. Family sizes are reduced for rationing, and 2nd and 3rd births are rare and only can be approved by the State. When Ender decisively wins a fight at school, he is promoted to Battle School, on a space station off-world. Ender is tested in a social environment where he surpasses his equals in implementing creative military tactics. The Battle Room, where platoons play a type of 'Freeze Lazer Tag'... but in Zero Gravity. In The Battle Room, Ender proves himself to be a Great General. Back on Terra, we also follow Ender's older brother Peter, who was denied entry into Battle School due to being unempathetic. Along with his sister Valentine, who also was denied entry to Battle School for being too empathetic. Their story is one of sibling-civil war—Valentine's desire and failure to control her older brother, who seems bent on World Control. Valentine and Peter sway public option by creating fake identities on online message boards (Social Media). With these fake identities, they can direct the 'adults in the room' to move geopolitics in their favor. And in my options, these are the most interesting chapters in the book! Ender moves quickly up the latter. He easily defeats all other Platoons in Battle School inside the Battle Room. When Ender passes all tests and wins another device physical fight with another Platoon leader, Ender is promoted to Command School. In Command School, Ender meets Mazer Rackham, the man who won Earth the 1st Bugger Invasion. Ender is given command of all ships, with all his friends under his command. He wins battles; he loses battles. When the Earth Leadership attends Ender's last test. Ender is given a final variable. The Bugger Home World. With all ships, Ender destroys the Bugger Homeworld and every living thing on the planet. It is revealed that Ender was in command of all ships for the entire time he was in Command School. Score: (BIG) Thumbs Up! This book reads likes Masterpiece. The voice of Ender is so fully realized, you understand who Ender is and what he's experiencing. The Battle School chapters are fun. But, it is what's happening back on Terra that I personally find most interesting! I am more motivated to read Shadows of the Hegemon than, say, Speaker of the Dead, on this fact alone. The use of social media and fake identities, being the book was written in 1985, is jaw-dropping. Along with open discussions about the value of lies, the justification for a preemptive strike, and towering of the individual over society. All these points make the story richer and leave the reader with a sense of loss and the knowledge that the choices you make will follow you into tomorrow. Ender's Game Part 2Orson Scott CardAndrew "Ender" Wiggin thinks he is playing computer simulated war games; he is, in fact, engaged in something far more desperate. The result of genetic experimentation, Ender may be the military genius Earth desperately needs in a war against an alien enemy seeking to destroy all human life. The only way to find out is to throw Ender into ever harsher training, to chip away and find the diamond inside, or destroy him utterly. Ender Wiggin is six years old when it begins. He will grow up fast. But Ender is not the only result of the experiment. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway almost as long. Ender's two older siblings, Peter and Valentine, are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. While Peter was too uncontrollably violent, Valentine very nearly lacks the capability for violence altogether. Neither was found suitable for the military's purpose. But they are driven by their jealousy of Ender, and by their inbred drive for power. Peter seeks to control the political process, to become a ruler. Valentine's abilities turn more toward the subtle control of the beliefs of commoner and elite alike, through powerfully convincing essays. Hiding their youth and identities behind the anonymity of the computer networks, these two begin working together to shape the destiny of Earth-an Earth that has no future at all if their brother Ender fails.Goodreads.com---This is Epilagers. In Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, we meet Ender Wiggin, a six-year-old boy who has been identified as a high-potential child soldier in a future human society readying for war with an alien species known as “the Buggers.” To prepare him for life as a military leader, high-ranking officials send him to Battle School, where they put him through a series of war games and simulations while isolating him from his peers in an effort to hone his fighting skills. Ender excels, and in the book's twist ending, we discover that he's been given way more responsibility than he expected. On Episode 59, we consider the book's real antagonist, talk about what Ender's Game has to say about good and evil and the moral implications of war, and discuss the lack of representation and social progress in a book meant to portray a more evolved future. We also spend quite a bit of time at the top of the show talking about the author's problematic politics. In this inaugural episode, TJ reviews Ender’s Game. He found it to be fun and enjoyed it, but also found it lacking. The pacing was off and important things were left out of the film while unimportant things were kept. But it was still a lot of fun and it is recommended. 3.5 of 5 stars.
