Mark and Nathan talk about the 2009 prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Directed by Gavin Hood and starring Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds and Silent Deadpool, the prequel kind of explores the origins of X-Men member Wolverine. In this episode, they also talk about rushed prequels, bathroom destruction, and comic book movies with Rotten Tomatometer scores. Enjoy!
Eye in the Sky reminds me of the ‘greater good' questions I discussed in class during high school - there's no right or wrong answer but there are always consequences. This movie is an excellent example of how tension and escalating stakes combine with conflict triangles and narrative drive to create a compelling story. This isn't an action movie but I couldn't take my eyes off the screen for fear of missing something. Join us this week to discover how to craft stories that linger after the cover is closed. -M“Eye in the Sky creates a fascinating amount of tension. It does this by setting up a situation at the beginning that has multiple courses of action and outcomes, and then it delays the decision until the last possible moment.” Melanie HillRelated Story Nerd EpisodesThe Woman King (Season 8 Episode 2)Our Best Advice (Season 8 Episode 11)The Help (Season 11 Episode 5) For access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle. To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website.Follow Valerie on X, Instagram and Threads @valerie_francisFollow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor
Fans of the 20th Century Fox mutant superhero series were anxious to see the backstory of fan-favorite character Wolverine explained, so Gavin Hood's prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine landed with a box office bang in 2009. But despite a successful financial run, the film was lambasted by fans and critics for its shoddy special effects, mistreatment of beloved characters (including a disastrous debut for Ryan Reynold's Deadpool) and some truly baffling story choices. Join Sebastian and Jennifer as they go full adamantium claws out on this misshapen mutant misfire and show gratitude for the recent corrective of Deadpool & Wolverine.
This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris sharpen their claws and discuss 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the first time Wade Wilson/Deadpool and Wolverine shared the screen before this weekend's Deadpool & Wolverine. The fourth film released in Fox's X-Men franchise, X-Men Origins: Wolverine sought to show the origins of Logan (Hugh Jackman) and how he became the adamantium-clawed amnesiac we met in the first X-Men movie, which includes his relationship with his brother Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber). What we got was a mess of a film full of contradictions to things we already saw in the previous movies, atrocious CG, and the absolute abomination that is Weapon XI, aka Deadpool. The guys talk about all that, plus the only live-action appearance of Gambit, the fantastic opening credits, how the video game adaptation is the better version, the infamous workprint leak, and more.We want to hear your comments and feedback. Eye in the Sky (2015), directed by Gavin Hood from a script by Guy Hibbert, depicts the operation of a multinational team aimed at high-level operatives from the Al-Shabaab terrorist group in Nairobi, Kenya. When the British army learns of the location of the suspects, it plans to capture them. But surveillance reveals the suspects are preparing two new recruits to carry out a suicide bombing. British military officials, with their U.S. partner, seek to shift the operation from capture to kill. Officials must decide whether to authorize a lethal drone strike to avoid a possible terrorist attack, despite the possibility of civilian casualties, including of a young girl who is nearby. Eye in the Sky, which stars Helen Mirren, Aaron Paul, Barkhad Abdi, and Alan Rickman (in his last screen role), depicts the new reality of drone warfare and the complex legal and moral issues it raises. Wolverine begins... Directed by Gavin Hood, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Wolverine. Luke and Nathan re-enter the mutant world as they revisit the fourth installment of the X-Men film series, the first installment of the Wolverine trilogy within the series, and what serves as a spin-off/prequel to X-Men (2000). Seeking solace from his dark past, Logan (Hugh Jackman), better known as Wolverine, seems to have found love and contentment with Kayla Silverfox (Lynn Collins). Logan's peaceful existence is shattered when Victor Creed (Liev Schreiber), his vicious brother, brutally murders Kayla. Logan's thirst for revenge propels him into the Weapon X program, where he undergoes a painful procedure to bond his bones with adamantium, making him virtually indestructible and more than a match for Victor.

Puh.
linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This September is “Masterclass Month” at Catching Up On Cinema! Every September, Trevor and Kyle celebrate the anniversary of Catching Up On Cinema by doing a deep dive into one of cinemas most famous franchises. September 2022 marks the 4th year anniversary of the show, and to celebrate the occasion, Trevor and Kyle will be reviewing the first 4 films of the X-Men film series! This week, Trevor and Kyle review Gavin Hood's, X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)! A troubled production in many regards, Gavin Hood's, X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) was to serve as the first in a new subseries of X-Men Origin films, however it's critical failure would result the subsequent cancellation and reworking of the proposed X-Men Origins: Magneto film into X-Men First Class (2011). The first of 3 solo Wolverine films to be headlined by Hugh Jackman as the title character, X-Men Origins is an odd duck of a film that goes to great lengths to draw attention to subtle elements connecting it to the previous X-Men films, while simultaneously completely bungling the same procedure in regards to major plot elements and characterizations. Produced nearly parallel to X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins is an incredibly expensive sequel that often feels like the result of the former films' creative table scraps. While not explicitly stated (publicly), it is heavily rumored that director Gavin Hood was strong-armed by 20th Century Fox into making a more a cheesier and more lighthearted film than he would have preferred. Hampered by a clunky and highly utilitarian script, as well as a hurried editing style and evidence of unfinished and/or rushed visual effects work, X-Men Origins bears many of the hallmarks signs of a troubled or creatively hamstrung production. A fine exhibition of Hugh Jackman and Liev Schrieber's screen presence and raw charisma, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is watchable and largely inoffensive, however in failing to impress on the action and effects front, and failing to fit cleanly into series continuity, Origins is likely remembered as a smear on the franchise to be wiped clean by later films in the series, or not remembered at all. Paul Hepker and Mark Kilian are a composing duo based in Los Angeles (Mark) and South Africa (Paul). Among many composing credits for films over the years, they have composed the scores for many of Gavin Hood's feature films, namely Official Secrets (2019), Eye in the Sky (2016), Rendition (2007) and Tsotsi (2005), their first collaboration with Gavin. They spoke recently with GlobeScreen Podcasts about these collaborations about the art of composing for films in general, emphasizing original sounds and instruments in their work together and other filmmakers they aspire to work with, on future projects. Guy Hibbert is a BAFTA-winning screenwriter and playwright. He has written numerous stories for film and television with a particular focus on conflict and compassion in some of the most troubled areas of society. In this episode we talked about his screenplay ‘Eye in the Sky' which is about the ethics of drone warfare, released as a film directed by Gavin Hood in 2015. Additionally we cover his route into becoming a writer after leaving school with little formalised education, his thoughts on how a screenplay can change the world, and what he thinks connects all of the stories he has written so far. It was an honour to speak with such a genuine person who cares so deeply about the art of writing, and I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation! *** Want to comment, get news and join episode discussions? He's the best at what he does, unfortunately, what he does in no way involves the power to tell Tom Rothman "no." The BOP Crew reaches the zenith of X-Men Generation One in our X-Retrospective series, along with the zenith of late 2000s 20th Century Fox Tom-foolery (see what we did there?). This is our audio commentary for X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, a film meant to kickstart a spin-off series of Origin titles, be Gavin Hood's big break, the start of a (very) different Deadpool, plus many other incredibly broken promises. Instead, a writer's strike, producer and executive arguments, conflicting ideals, last minute changes, the entire film being leaked onto the internet, and a myriad of other problems forever altered an R-rated revenge tale about Logan's war-torn PTSD into... well, you've seen it.
On this episode of The Deep Cut, host John Rocha welcomes director Gavin Hood to talk about his latest film, Official Secrets and what he learned as a direct from his experience on X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Official Secrets stars Keira Knightley in the true story of GCHQ translator Katharine Gun. In 2003, as politicians in Britain and the US angle to invade Iraq, Gun leaked a classified e-mail that urged spying on members of the UN Security Council to force through the resolution to go to war in Iraq. Charged with breaking the Official Secrets Act, and facing imprisonment, Katharine and her lawyers set out to defend her actions. With her life, liberty and marriage threatened, she must stand up for what she believes in. Rocha and Hood discuss how he came to direct the project, what inspired him to take the project on and what lessons he hopes viewers of the film take from the movie. Rocha also talks with Hood about his career and focuses on what he learned from the experience of directing X-Men Origins: Wolverine and how it has shaped the projects he has chosen to pursue ever since. It’s a wide open, fun and in-depth conversation with another accomplished and talented guest on The Deep Cut. Gavin Hood, director of Tsotsi and Eye in the Sky, discusses his new film Official Secrets, which stars Keira Knightley as the GCHQ whistleblower who was taken to court by the British government for leaking a top secret email to the press in the lead-up to the Iraq war in 2003. Next week The Louvre Museum in Paris opens a major exhibition on Leonardo da Vinci to commemorate the 500th anniversary of his death. Nearly 120 works will be displayed, with many on loan from collections around the world. However, there is much speculation over whether the world’s most expensive painting, Salvator Mundi, sold for $450m in 2017, will be on show. The painting of Christ, attributed to da Vinci in the last decade, hasn’t been on public display since its sale. Ben Lewis, author of The Last Leonardo, joins John Wilson to discuss. Moving to Mars, the latest exhibition at the Design Museum in London, explores how sending humans to the planet is not just a new frontier for science but also for design. Architect Tara Gbolade reviews the variety of exhibits which include a multisensory experience of the Red Planet and a full-scale prototype habitat. For their latest touring production, Graeae Theatre - the company that puts D/deaf and disabled actors centre stage - has asked Winsome Pinnock to reimagine her play One Under, first staged in 2005. It explores the aftermath of a young man dying under a tube train. Cyrus, the driver, becomes convinced he is his son. John Wilson talks to Winsome Pinnock and the director, Amit Sharma, about the drama. Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Sarah Johnson

I'm very excited about this episode of BEHIND THE LENS as we welcome back two wonderful filmmakers, one with a new film that was just released, and the other with a film we've followed since the festival circuit which now has distribution and is available for all. Our first guest is writer/director/producer/editor QUINCY ROSE talking about his latest film, THE NARCISSISTS. It's a true joy to have Quincy join us again. #BTLRadioShow has had the privilege of showcasing all three of Quincy's feature films and having Quincy on hand to talk about each. With a storied cinematic pedigree, this latest love letter to New York City handily shows us whom a couple of his filmmaking influences are. Take a listen as he talks about casting this four-person ensemble, crafting the dialogue, showcasing New York – and not the iconic images, but rarely seen gems, embracing "the still" of the camera while life just moves on, sound design, and of course, some exquisite jazz musical pieces. Then, writer/director/producer MICHELE REMSEN is back talking more about her feature directorial debut, TOSS IT. Fresh off a visit to Cannes Film Festival, Michele has words for the wise when it comes to film distribution, not to mention considerations for filmmakers contemplating heading to Cannes on their own dime. Listen as Michele fills us in on her filmmaking journey and the events that have transpired since her last visit to #BTLRadioShow when TOSS IT was on the fest circuit. But before our special guests join the fun, we've got excerpts of our exclusive interview with writer/director GAVIN HOOD as he talks about the powerful and important OFFICIAL SECRETS. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

His new film "Official Secrets" tells the story of Katherine Gun (played by Keira Knightley), a British intelligence specialist who leaked a memo when she felt her government was lying to the people. Few people have seen the rise of VFX like Kelly Port and Matt Butler. Over the course of 25 years, they’ve risen from digital artists to VFX supervisors at effects powerhouse Digital Domain. The watershed moment for both was their work on Titanic, and they discuss the million-dollar computers used to generate the 2TB of effects in the film. Of course, software and hardware have moved on a great deal since Jack and Rose's perilous adventure. Kelly talks about the groundbreaking technology and performance capture which made Avengers: Infinity War’s CG supervillain Thanos a reality, and Matt discusses his input on Ender’s Game and Ready Player One. They also muse about what makes Digital Domain a great place to work and their tactics for avoiding conflict and nurturing talent. Kelly and Matt have great chemistry with one another and Chris, and you’ll hear about their experiences of working with actors Dan Stevens and Josh Brolin, and directors Steven Spielberg and Gavin Hood. Plus, there’s a bonus pearl of wisdom from none other than Ron Howard.

I am your friend, Chirsty.BR: Good afternoon. I'm Brittany.M: I'm Michelle.C: Recently, the weather is cold. Have you seen some heart-warming films?BR: Of course. Let me tell you.BR: Yeah, the film is named 超时空同居M: Okay, it sounds like a science fiction.BR: Well, it's also a romantic comedy.M: Oh no. I feel hurt since I'm a single dog.BR: 哈哈!M: I can't wait to know what it is about.BR: It is about Gu Xiao Jiao of 2018 and Lu Ming of 1999 live in the same room by accident due to space time overlap. They can go back and forth freely between the ages.M: I think its novel in romantic movies.BR: They go from disliking to cooperation. Finally, they fall in love with each other. However, Lu Ming of 2018 appears and controls everything.M: Two identical people?BR: Uhmm. In 19 years, Lu Ming has changed from a kind man to a bad man with ambition. After knowing the truth, Lu Ming of 1999 changes the decision and they have a happy ending.M: I think that kind and evil are in the blink of an eye.BR: At the same time, its theme song is appealing.M: OK. I will listen to it for a moment. M: Then, I will also introduce a romantic movie called “Titanic”.C: It is enough classic.M: This is a film directed by 詹姆斯·卡梅隆,starring by 莱昂纳多·迪卡普里奥,凯特·温斯莱特. The story follows the Titanic hitting an iceberg in 1919, and it tells the love between a poor painter and a rich girl.C: I remember it has won the 70th Academy Awards, 11 awards.M: Yeah, 莱昂纳多plays Jack, he is a humorous, handsome and affectionate man. 凯特plays Rose, she is a socialist. At last, she lived bravely for Jack. Their action was well received by the audience.C: But it's ending is tragic.M: Sometimes, tragedies are also enlightening.C: What a coincidence! I will introduce 悲伤逆流成河 to our listeners.BR: It's also tragic.C: Do you know Campus Bullying?BR: I have heard before. It is so terrible.C: Yeah. The heroin, 易遥 is a victim. Because of aninadvertent infection with a venereal disease, after being exposed by唐小米. All of people laugh and bully her.BR: Does anyone help her?C: 齐铭and 顾森西help her. But they're in different ways. I like the latter way. However, by accident, 顾森西's sister顾森湘was murdered. Someone framed it to易遥.BR: No one trust her? Finally, I know, she threw herself into the river.C: But顾森西helped her because of love.BR: Wow. Youth film is so wonderful.C: Love is also.B: Hey, Emily. By the way, Marvel Comics great Stan Lee died a few days ago. After hearing that, I feel sorry for him.E: What a pity! I am a Marvel fans, too. So, now, lets talk about a famous work, Wolverine.B: OK. Here we go!E: The film talks that in 1845, James Howlett, a boy living in Canada, saw his father killed by groundskeeper, Thomas Logan. The trauma activated the boy's mutation: bone claws protruded from his knuckles, and he killed Thomas, who revealed that he was James's real father. B: James fled along with Thomas's son Victor Creed, who is thus James's half-brother. They spent the next century as soldiers, fighting in the American Civil War, both World Wars, and the Vietnam War. In Vietnam, Victor killed a senior officer.E: James defended Victor and the two were sentenced to execution by firing squad, which they survived. Major William Stryker approached them in military custody, and offered them membership in Team X, a group of mutants including Agent Zero, Wade Wilson, John Wraith, Fred Dukes, and Chris Bradley. They have joined the team for a few years, but the group's disregard for human life caused James to leave.B: While Logan and Victor joined forces to fight off Weapon XI, Kayla was mortally wounded leading the captive mutants to Professor Charles Xavier and safety. After Logan killed Weapon XI, Stryker arrived and shot Logan in the head with adamantium bullets, rendering Logan unconscious. Before Stryker could shoot Kayla, she grabbed him and used her mutant power to persuade him to turn around and walk away until his feet bled. Logan regained consciousness but had lost his memory. He noticed his dog tags read "Logan" on one side and "Wolverine" on the other. He paused upon noticing Kayla's body, but did not recognize herE: The words touch me is that "Countless choices define our fate, each choice, each moment, a ripple in a river of time. Enough ripples and you change the tide, for the future is never truly set." B: It's so touching. And, “Wolverine” has also a strong cast.E: Wow, what's it?B: They're director Gavin Hood, actor Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Lynn Collins, Ryan Reynolds, Kdvin Durand, Taylor Kitsch, Scott Adkins, Troye Sivan and so on. E: The producer is the patriarch of American comics---Stan Lee, who is known to us. Its product company is Marvel Comics. What's more, it is shot at Texas, American Grand canyon, New York. B: The film consists of fantasy, science, love and action. Now let's see the behind-the-scenes look. E: “Wolverine” was shown on 5th March 2009 in China. That's to say: After “Spider-Man” “Iron Man”, it is the third time to import films concerning hero on May Day continuously.B: More interestingly, Gavin Hood explained why he wanted to direct “Wolverine”: “Partly because I need to prepare tuition fees for my daughter. Actually, I'm not expert at directing it.”BR: The happy moment passes so fast. It's time to say goodbye.C: The weather is changeable. Pay attention to keeping warm, so that we can prevent cold.BR: And, the final examination is coming. Do you ready for it?C: Have a good review! And, see you next time!BR: Bye.

Ender's Game - Blu-ray Review 4.9 Stars (out of 5) - Rated PG-13 Synopsis 70 years after a horrific alien war, an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion. Starring: Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Hailee Steinfeld, Ben Kingsley, Abigail Breslin Director: Gavin Hood Blu-ray Release Date: February 11, 2014 Subtitles: English, English SDH, Spanish Rating Overall rating weighted as follows: Audio 40%, Video 40%, Special Features 20%, Movie - its just our opinion so take it with a grain of salt Audio 4.9 Stars (out of 5) Dolby and DTS Demo Discs used as basis for comparison ● Subwoofer - 5.0 Stars ● Dialog – 5.0 Stars ● Surround Effects – 4.5 Stars ● Dynamic Range – 5.0 Stars English: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1, Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1, English: Dolby Digital 2.0 The bass performance in this film is a spectacle to behold. When it's needed, the couch vibrated with every explosion and rumbles of spaceship engines. Punches even land the heavy thuds and a few random rumbles are thrown in for extra measure. This action drama relies on dialog just as much as bass and surround, and it handles each line in the script perfectly. The rear speakers could have been used a tad bit more, but they are used often enough to envelope you with sounds of whizzing spaceships, echoing voices on intercoms, weird alien clicks, and random computer noises. Video 5.0 Stars (out of 5) Spears & Munsil Benchmark Blu-ray Edition used as basis for comparison ● Color Accuracy - 5.0 Stars ● Shadow Detail – 5.0 Stars ● Clarity – 5.0 Stars ● Skin Tones – 5.0 Stars ● Compression – 5.0 Stars Codec: MPEG-4 AVC, Resolution: 1080p, Aspect ratio: 2.40:1, Original Aspect Ratio: 2.39:1 This MPEG-4 AVC codec is clean and helped bring out the details in sharp edges on cold steel, details on a huge tattoo, graphics on computer screens, pimples and freckles on young teen faces, and wrinkles and moles on AARP members. Color temperatures change depending on location. Earth colors are extra warm, living quarters are neutral, and in space everything is cold and blue. Some colors stand out a little more than others like blue skies, bright glowing direction lights, and those awful bright colored yellow jump suits. There are several dark scenes, and this Blu-ray handles them beautifully. Nothing gets lost in the shadows and no compression issues are visible. Ender's Game is an entertaining, smart, and sometimes dark movie, but I don't expect to see a second installment. At it's heart Ender's Game is a futuristic war movie with kids, however it mostly takes place in military school where they climb the military rank ladder. The film isn't really about the war itself, it's about how difficult it is for children to emotionally handle a cruel adult world. The acting is top notch from the young cast and from the Oscar nominated veterans. The plot seems thin but by the end of the film the story feels much richer. The movie is good but not great, several scenes are related to the aliens leave you scratching your head asking, ”What does this mean?”.
Chinese science-fiction fans and gamers must be excited at the release of Gavin Hood's screen adaptation of the celebrated futuristic thriller, "Ender's Game." On China's social network website, Douban.com, there have already been book reviews on the original novel of the same name by American author Orson Scott Card. Many of them were anxiously looking forward to seeing the Nebula Award winning sci-fi classic being brought onto the big screen. The movie's launch in China on January 7th is sort of a celebration for Chinese fans. Most of the book worms seem to agree that it is a fair enough adaptation. The zero-gravity battle training room so vividly envisioned at the center of the whole book is brought to life in the motion picture. The images of the young cadets floating and fighting in the room are as good as those you see in Alfonso Cuaron's phenomenal pictures from his "Gravity". Compliments extend to the acting skills of Asa Butterfield. The boy from last year's Oscar-winning "Hugo" has now matured into an exceptional teenage leader upon whose shoulder is placed the future of mankind. Butterfield aptly portrays a child prodigy who tries very hard to balance his equally strong senses of reason and emotion. The story uses very obvious stereotypes to explain the author's philosophical ideas, or rather to try and inspire people to think the same questions that no one could supply the answer. For example: is there such a thing as a just war? And should ethical standards be adopted in wars? Even when it is a war about the survival of a species? It is not likely that these questions are related to matters of life and death, but I am sure we could all enjoy letting our minds flow freely for a while. That's the charm of science fiction, and the film "Ender's Game" has obviously delivered on that. But naturally, there are complaints, some of them directed at the adaptation, because the director has stripped the less spectacular, and therefore less marketable, storylines from the book out of the movie. It makes a lot of sense; the script tells a complete story, although some parts could use a bit more color. To sum up, most Chinese moviegoers in general seem satisfied with "Ender's Game." It currently sits at number 2 on this week's box office rankings, right behind the animated comedy "Despicable Me 2".
