In this episode of the WN Movie Talk Podcast, I take an in-depth look at Hugo (2011), the visually stunning 3D masterpiece directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese. Known for his gritty, violent dramas like Goodfellas and The Departed, why did Scorsese pivot to this family-friendly adventure? We explore the director's motivations, the film's ground-breaking use of 3D technology, and its heartfelt tribute to the magic of cinema.Based on Brian Selznick's award-winning novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Hugo tells the story of a young orphan (played by Asa Butterfield) living in a Paris train station who uncovers the forgotten legacy of pioneering filmmaker Georges Méliès, portrayed brilliantly by Ben Kingsley. Méliès' journey from a celebrated illusionist and filmmaker to a forgotten relic of a bygone era is deeply emotional and steeped in themes of art, creativity, and redemption—elements that resonate powerfully with Scorsese's sensibilities and his own dedication to film preservation. The stellar cast also includes Chloë Grace Moretz, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Jude Law, with a supporting crew that brought Scorsese's vision to life—cinematographer Robert Richardson and production designer Dante Ferretti.Join me as I discuss the film's themes, the nuanced performance by Kingsley, its place in Scorsese's career, and why Hugo remains a timeless ode to the art of filmmaking. Don't forget to subscribe, leave a review, and share your thoughts on this enchanting journey into cinema history! Listen now and rediscover the magic of Hugo! Hosted on Acast. Directed by Tim Burton and released in 2016, this film is an adaptation of Ransom Riggs' popular novel and perfectly suits Burton's distinctive style, blending dark fantasy with whimsical and gothic elements. The story follows Jacob Portman (Asa Butterfield), a teenager who, following a family tragedy, travels to a remote island in Wales. There, he discovers the titular Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, a safe haven for children with extraordinary abilities. These abilities range from levitation to invisibility and even having a hive of bees living inside one's body.Jacob learns that the children are protected by their caretaker, Miss Peregrine (Eva Green), who can manipulate time and transform into a bird. The home exists within a time loop, repeating the same day in 1943 to prevent aging and evade lurking threats. As Jacob grows closer to the residents, he uncovers dark secrets and learns that his own "peculiarity" might be the key to saving his new friends from impending dangers led by the sinister Mr. Barron (Samuel L. Jackson). At its core, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children explores themes of acceptance and the celebration of differences. It champions the idea that what makes one different can also be the source of strength. Jacob's journey is also one of bravery, as he steps into a new world and fights to protect his friends. This film is great for a family movie night with older kids, offering a mix of fantasy, action, and heartfelt messages. It's a visually engaging film that encourages discussions about diversity, acceptance, and courage in the face of adversity. For fans of fantasy and adventure, and especially for those who appreciate Tim Burton's quirky artistic vision, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a must-watch. It's not just entertaining but also thought-provoking, presenting a world where peculiarities are celebrated rather than shunned. So, join us as we explore the peculiar and captivating world of Miss Peregrine and her extraordinary children. Whether you're a longtime fan of the book or new to the story, there's plenty to discover and discuss in this magical cinematic journey.

Boyfriend and girlfriend once again accidentally go to different places for the holidays, and hilarity ensues in this sequel to last year's Your Christmas or Mine? Ashley & Matt review this new direct-to-streaming movie in today's 12 Days of Christmas episode.
How can the same s**t happen to the same couple twice, as John McClane might ask? Well, it's a bigger and weirder mix-up of Christmas plans in this British comedy, the sequel to last year's Your Christmas Or Mine. We're once again joined by stars Asa Butterfield and Cora Kirk to talk about everything that went into making this Alpine adventure, and then author, journalist and podcaster Kat Brown joins me in the studio to dissect the franchise so far, and discuss sequel possibilities. Your Christmas Or Mine 2 is out now on Prime Video. You can find out more about Kat Brown on Instagram @Katbrownwrites or on Twitter @Katbrown. It's beginning to look a lot like... December! Because, well, it is December - which means you can now officially (according to Ali, anyway) watch as many Christmas films, Christmas TV specials, Christmas musical extravaganzas as you jolly well wish. To celebrate this joyous occasion, Ali has spoken to two human beings who know a thing or two about the festive spirit, namely Hannah Waddingham (of Ted Lasso and now 'Home For Christmas' fame) and Otis Milburn himself, Asa Butterfield, the star of both Your Christmas Or Mine? and Your Christmas Or Mine 2 (out December 8th, fact fans).

Welcome back to Not A Bomb Podcast, the show where we go back and reexamine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history. The theme for this month is all about prestige films, movies that bombed at the box office but also won multiple academy awards. We kick things off with a discussion of a high profile family, adventure film from 2011 - Hugo. This gives Troy and Brad a reason to talk about one of the greatest directors of all time - Martin Scorsese. Hugo was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and took home five wins, but it wasn't enough to save it from losing more than $100 million during its box office run. As a bonus, Troy and Brad share their top three Scorsese films and talk about the relevancy of the academy award ceremony.Timestamps: Intro - (2:10), Academy Awards Talk - (5:40), Box Office Results and Critical Response - (16:07), Behind the Camera - (23:45), In Front of the Camera - (37:43), Production, Development and Historical Accuracies - (48:13), Commerical Break - (53:19), Hugo Discussion - (55:19), Is it a Bomb? - (90:32), Listener Feedback - (91:32), and Outro - (102:44)Hugo is directed by Martin Scorsese and stars Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz, Emily Mortimer, and Jude Law. This week, Justin, Dave, and Ashley watched Choose or Die. Here's the Netflix synopsis: “A broke student who plays an obscure 1980s survival computer game in pursuit of an unclaimed $100,000 prize. After a series of unexpectedly terrifying moments, she soon realises she's no longer playing for the money, but for her own life.” Robin, a horror aficionado, joined the podcast to help explain why this film wasn't a total dumpster fire. Dave didn't understand the premise or the ending. Justin didn't understand the premise or the ending either. But both enjoyed the fact that there were old 80s video game consoles in the film. Ashley ended up losing the bet she made with Justin on the last episode: she simply didn't enjoy this film, despite the (underutilized) charm of Asa Butterfield. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/whyarepeoplewatchingthis/support

Combining a modern tale of terror with a 1980s video game, first-time director Toby Meakins and writer Simon Allen decided to tackle a horror film that feels like it's one part ‘Jumanji' and another part ‘Black Mirror.' The premise centers around a down-on-her-luck computer programming enthusiast named Kayla, who cleans buildings at night to help support her family, as they continue to grieve the loss of her little brother. When she's not working, Kayla is hanging out with Isaac — another computer programmer with a crush on her and hopes to one day make it big creating his own video game. In his spare time, Isaac likes to play with old computers and long forgotten software like the game he finds that promises the winner a massive cash prize. After teasing Kayla that many of this prizes were never claimed, she decides to give this game a spin for herself. Kayla soon discovers that this game is really a curse and it's nothing she can escape with just the stroke of a button….In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to boot up our Commodore 64 and slip in the floppy disk as we review the 2022 Netflix horror film “Choose or Die”…

Welcome back, duffels! It is my 21st birthday and there is no one else that I'd rather celebrate with than with you all! Today, I am joined by a guest who has a voice that rivals Mariah Carey (especially when she's singing delusionally at 11:30pm), my roommate, Jada Wright!!! We discuss her experience dealing with mental health as a Christian, the stigma against mental health in religious communities, how faith has helped her mental health, and more! Tune in to also get advice for how you can help educate your faith community on mental illness, examples of common conversations in Christian communities regarding mental health, a heated debate about Chris Evans vs. Asa Butterfield, and the story of how Jada could've been on A.N.T. Farm... enjoy! P.S: I apologize for the audio at the end! It's episode 28, but I'm still having technical difficulties. Sigh.
Exciting news from the Business world as Microsoft and Gamestop announce a business relationship, but what does this mean? The crew reviews the turn based RPG, For The King and continues the Next Gen Conversation by highlighting the best (and worst) parts of IGN's reviews of the consoles.
This week the gang gets together to talk about the film, Hugo. Directed by the Master Martin Scorsese, starring Asa Butterfield and Chloë Grace Moretz.
