Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek, Picard) joins us again this week and at 73 he is somehow still the most generous voice in the room. We get into the Picard Season Three reunion he calls a true full circle, the season eight of Next Generation they pitched together after twenty years apart, and the version of Riker he finally got to play one more time. We also talk about the Sir Ben Kingsley humility lesson from Thunderbirds, why he pulls hundred dollar bills out of his own pocket to keep a set joyful and safe, and his ride or die friendships with Brent Spiner, Patrick Stewart, and John Glover - - whose voicemails he still saves like love letters. Gene Simmons and Renny Harlin join Nerdtropolis Mayor Sean Tajipour on Reel Insights to talk about Deep Water, the intense new survival thriller from the director of Cliffhanger and Die Hard 2. In this conversation, Simmons opens up about getting his feet wet as a producer on the shark-infested thriller, why the project stood out to him, and why he believes movies like this belong on the biggest screen possible.Harlin also breaks down the challenge of turning a plane crash in the middle of the Pacific into a nonstop, nail-biting theatrical ride. He talks about balancing spectacle, fear, character drama, and emotional truth as the survivors quickly discover the sharks are only one of many dangers waiting for them in the water.Deep Water stars Aaron Eckhart, Sir Ben Kingsley, Molly Belle Wright, Angus Sampson, Kelly Gale, and Li Wenhan. Directed by Renny Harlin and produced by Gene Simmons, the film follows survivors of a flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai as they fight to stay alive after crashing in the Pacific.Deep Water is now in theaters.Visit Nerdtropolis.comFacebook.com/nerdtropolisInstagram.com/nerdtropolisTwitter.com/nerdtropolisTikTok.com/@nerdtropolis
I'm very excited about this week's BEHIND THE LENS because I get to talk about RENNY HARLIN and his new film DEEP WATER! After 33 years of chatting with Renny and talking about his films, he truly is not only one of my favorite filmmakers, but one of my favorite people. His intelligence, his skill, his dedication to the craft of moviemaking and storytelling, his directorial vision, and his kindness. I adore him. Chatting with Renny is always a joy, and no matter how long we talk, it's never long enough. And that's what happened last week when we sat down for an exclusive interview to discuss DEEP WATER. Renny wanted an hour. Publicists said no and offered 4 minutes. I begged and got 15 minutes. BUT, undeterred, when the formal interview (which ran 20 minutes) ended, Renny and I spent another 30 minutes together on our own, talking about the film, filmmaking, and other things. For those who aren't familiar with the film as yet, DEEP WATER is the story of an airline flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai that goes down in the middle of the Pacific. After surviving the crash, the survivors soon discover they're not alone, and they must survive the shark-infested waters. Simple right? Not the way Renny Harlin tells it. DEEP WATER is directed by Renny Harlin, written by Pete Bridges and John Kim, and stars, among others, Aaron Eckhart, Sir Ben Kingsley, Molly Belle Wright, Angus Sampson, Kelly Gale, Elijah Tamati, and Kate Fitzpatrick. Cinematographer is D.J. Stipsen, with editing by Geoff Lamb, with Fernando Velázquez providing the score. I also give you some pearls and fun takeaways from this weekend's TCM Classic Film Festival. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
George Orwell's classic totalitarian critique "Animal Farm" gets a dumbed-down animated big screen incarnation. Yes, the pigs take over the farm, but the metaphors don't fly. The all-star voice cast includes Seth Rogan, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin and Woody Harrelson but their efforts are for naught. Screenwriter Nicholas Stoller and director Andy Serkis deserve some credit for trying a new approach, but this so-called modernized version of “Animal Farm” isn't for adults who revere Orwell or for kids who couldn't care less. Here's one that won't be shown on airlines anytime soon. "Jaws" meets "Airport" in "Deep Water," the story of a loaded passenger flight that crashes into -you guessed it- shark infested waters. Aaron Eckhart and Sir Ben Kingsley are the captains who accidentally serve up a smorgasbord for hungry carnivores along with the typical disaster movie cliches. If the premise sounds familiar, another movie called “No Way Up” came out two years ago with a nearly identical plot. While it's overly familiar, director Renny Harlin's opus “Deep Water” is impressively filmed. It ain't deep, but disaster movie fans won't mind. Producer John Lasseter may no longer be at Pixar, but his creative fingerprints are all over the wildly imaginative Netflix animated fantasy, "Swapped." Michael B. Jordan and Juno Temple provide the voices of a mammal and a bird who magically swap bodies in a fantastical woodland area. Their experiences change their perspectives, proving that differences are good and that working together makes life better for everyone. It's smart and beautifully animated. "Swapped" is a family film in the best sense, providing thoughtful entertainment that can be enjoyed by all age groups.
Ed Burns and Sir Ben Kingsley travel to the past on a time safari in A Sound of Thunder—a Ray Bradbury adaptation that might have the worst CGI in film history. LIVE from Largo in Los Angeles, Paul, Jason, and June discuss all the ludicrous time travel logic, how everyone in this world should be losing their minds, the incredible energy Sir Ben Kingsley brings to his scenes, and the reason why this movie was released with unfinished special effects. This week, it's back to the MCU with their 17th (!) Television / Streaming storyline; this time with Sir Ben Kingsley and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's fantastic superhero drama depicting the challenges of making it big in Hollywood - for two budding - but far from normal actors! It opens with an outrageous set of euphemisms which no one saw coming and it doesn't rise much out of the gutter from there! From gaining superpowers from Mackerel and more film premise pitches to the Hollywood elite, to renewed debates around biscuits and their dunk-ability - there's plenty of segues during this week's episode!Grab that Peach Ring and enjoy a spolier-ific review of Season 1! #GITS
This week, DtW is into the superhero-adjacent MCU TV show, Wonder Man! Dan and Raul have Jonnie back to talk more about Marvel as they field another series introducing a lesser-known hero with ionic abilities and killer shades. Yaya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley star in this two-hander about hiding your true self, braving the ins and outs of the film industry and most of all, friendship. While Yaya's Simon is desperate to launch a real acting career, his own creative ideas are getting in the way. Meanwhile, Ben's Trevor is navigating life after being the face of terror as The Mandarin and is roped into ensnaring the powered Simon for the shady Dept of Damage Control by appealing to his need for help with his acting career as well as a real friend. Classic setup, but do the burgeoning buddies survive the reveal of the deception and Damage Control coming for them? Is fighting for the role of his dreams what emboldens Simon to take a big step forward in life? I bet these three guys have some thoughts!
Wonder Man on Disney Plus, a “Marvel Spotlight,” is a character driven show that centers around one struggling actor Simon Williams, and our favorite character actor (the Mandarin himself) Trevor Slattery. Simon has a secret and so does Trevor. They both are vying for roles in the same movies and places in each others hearts. This is a tremendously acted, solidly written show that was seemingly dumped all at once. Is Disney afraid to be different and is this stance hindering the creativity of everything under their umbrella? Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley have no business playing these characters with this amount of heart and earnest for an MCU tv show, but they do and they deliver. Please! It's bonus time, as we bring you an extra episode of Soundtracking with Chris Columbus, director of the adaptation of Richard Osman's bestseller, The Thursday Murder Club. With a stellar cast including Hellen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Sir Ben Kingsley & Celia Imrie, it tells the story of Four retirees who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun, only to find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands.
Case Notes, August 30th, 2025: A suspiciously cozy murder mystery has been committed. The suspects—Tommy Metz III, Mandy Kaplan, Steve Sarmento, and Justin “JJ” Jaeger—have assembled remotely, each with their own dubious alibis and hot takes. The film: The Thursday Murder Club, Netflix's big adaptation of Richard Osman's beloved novel. The crime? A charming cast, a confusing mystery, and a script that may or may not have committed third-degree exposition. This month's Film Board roundtable dives headfirst into the soft lighting and softer stakes of this senior-led whodunit. JJ comes in as the film's most vocal defender, praising its character-driven structure and comparing it (gasp!) to Knives Out. Tommy and Steve are less convinced, calling the movie pleasant but forgettable, faulting everything from flat cinematography to emotionally neutered finales. Mandy, the show's resident Osman superfan, mourns the depth lost in translation from page to screen. Pete, meanwhile, accuses Chris Columbus of directing every scene like it's the trailer—and not in a good way. From plot structure and adaptation choices to the aesthetics of Cooper's Chase and the misuses of Sir Ben Kingsley, this episode covers it all. Was it a missed opportunity or just an okay pizza? Can Helen Mirren's exposition dumps be forgiven? Did we really need the cold case? Should somebody address the case of Jonathan Pryce? If you love spirited disagreement, spoilers aplenty, and occasional emotional whiplash caused by the word “cake,” this is your episode.Watch & DiscoverWatch Now: NetflixOriginal Theatrical TrailerAdapted from The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman Support The Next Reel Family of Film Podcasts:Become a member for just $5/month or $55/yearJoin our Discord community of movie loversThe Next Reel Family of Film Podcasts:Cinema Scope: Bridging Genres, Subgenres, and MovementsThe Film BoardMovies We LikeThe Next Reel Film PodcastSitting in the DarkConnect With Us:Main Site: WebMovie Platforms: Letterboxd | FlickchartSocial Media: Facebook | Instagram | Threads | Bluesky | YouTube | PinterestYour Hosts: Pete | JJ | Steve | Tommy | Andy | Ocean Shop & Stream:Merch Store: Apparel, stickers, mugs & moreWatch Page: Buy/rent films we've discussedOriginals: Source material from our episodesSpecial offers: Letterboxd Pro/Patron discount | Audible
This week's Empire Podcast sees Chris Hewitt sit down, on Zoom and in person, with a cavalcade of cracking guests. There's Eva Victor, star/writer/director of the excellent Sorry, Baby, who talks about cats, directing themselves, and people who look like yams. [23:05 - 39:05 approx] Then there's Olivia Colman and Jay Roach, star and director of The Roses, the reimagining of the classic comedy, The War Of The Roses, who talk about baseball, guns, and terrible dinner parties. [59:50 - 1:17:03 approx] And, last but not least, Chris genuflects in the general direction of Sir Ben Kingsley, star of The Thursday Murder Club, as they talk about that movie, Sexy Beast, and Trevor Slattery. [1:42:55 - 1:56:29 approx] Either side of those, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and, after a fashion, Ben Travis for a fun episode in which they discuss the greatest movie Chucks (and variations thereof), run their eyes over the week's movie news (and yes, the reveal of the Star Wars: Starfighter cast came too late, dagnammit), and review Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing, Macon Blair's The Toxic Avenger, The Roses, and The Thursday Murder Club. Enjoy!
This week on The Filmmakers Podcast, hosts Conor Boru and Francis Annan welcome two icons of the filmmaking world: producer, writer and director Chris Columbus, and Academy Award-winning actor Sir Ben Kingsley. He also reflects on the role of rehearsals, the unique magic of making films for the big screen, the movies that continue to inspire him, and why he believes there is so much to learn from the new generation of filmmakers. Sir Ben Kingsley – whose career spans over five decades with landmark performances in Gandhi, Schindler's List and Sexy Beast – discusses the inspirations that continue to fuel his craft. He speaks about his Shakespearean roots, the nuances of performing for stage versus screen, and offers invaluable insights for emerging actors looking to build their careers. An unmissable conversation with two true legends of cinema. The Thursday Murder Club is out now! Four irrepressible retirees spend their time solving cold case murders for fun, but their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn when they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands. Our featured conversation is a first-time visit to “House of Sand and Fog”, the Sir Ben Kingsley, Jennifer Connelly, and Shohreh Aghdashloo film, directed by Vadim Perelman, shot by Roger Deakens, scored by James Horner, which is a powerhouse drama so powerful it nabbed two acting Oscar nominations. None of those was for Jennifer Connelly, who won for “A Beautiful Mind” the year before. Grab a beer and give us a listen! linktr.ee/theloveofcinema - Check out our YouTube page! Are we gonna get lucky and discover that this film has always been an underrated gem? Or are we gonna get Slevin, whatever the heck that means. Josh Hartnett. Lucy Liu. Bruce Willis. Morgan Freeman. Sir Ben Kingsley. Stanley Tucci. A lot of other good actors. Can they make this wannabe Tarantino thing any good? The time has once again come for the boys to delve into the back catalogue of the most infamous video game movie director of all time, Raging Boll himself, Uwe Boll. No, your eyes don't deceive you, this movie does indeed star Sir Ben Kingsley in one of the biggest cases of "how the F*!K did that happen?" in the history of film. Clearly Ben was asking himself that question too because his performance here in unlike any performance you've ever seen him do. We promise. Hosted on Acast. Whatever our reasons for tuning in or out this Super Bowl Sunday, as movie fans, there's no denying the impact the event has in terms of trailers and TV spots, with Paramount, Universal, and Disney all investing a record $7 million per 30-second Super Bowl spot. Paramount has three spots booked, featuring "Bob Marley: One Love," John Krasinski's "IF," and "A Quiet Place: Day One." Disney is expected to promote its Father's Day release "Inside Out 2" and the trailer for Marvel Studios' sole 2024 release "Deadpool 3,". Universal may feature spots for various films, including "Twisters," "Kung Fu Panda 4," "Monkeyman," and "The Fall Guy." Sony and Warner Bros are notably absent from Super Bowl spots this year, and there's no confirmation from Apple or Netflix about promoting their major projects during the event either. Despite rumors of its cancellation, Marvel Studios' Wonder Man series starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is apparently back on track and actively in production according to leaked set photos and footage circulating the web. Production of the series, led by Shang Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton and producer Andrew Guest, began in April but was paused due to last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The images in question tease an in-universe film franchise depicting a marquee with the Wonder Man title card along with the character's logo and emblem. While we are lacking on official details, including a release date, the latest we've heard is that the series will fall under the new Marvel Spotlight banner and Sir Ben Kingsley is expected to reprise his role as Trevor Slattery. Unfortunately we learned today that a crew member who was a rigger has sadly died on set after falling from the rafters. The on-set accident did not occur during filming and we certainly share the condolences of the cast and crew. Although it debuted at the top of the box office, Matthew Vaughn's $200 million would be February blockbuster, Argylle, has not performed well, with an $18 million domestic and $35 million global start, coupled with a C+ CinemaScore. The star-studded ensemble cast failed to attract audiences as predicted by tracking. Despite Apple's substantial financial prowess, these big-budget films, such as Napoleon and Killers of the Flower Moon, are not proving profitable when considering the overall motion picture profit and loss sheet, lacking ancillaries like foreign TV, theme park tie-ins, or cruise ship exploitation, prompting questions about the streamers long-term viability. During the documentary "Grounded 2: Making The Last of Us Part 2," creative director Neil Druckmann hinted at the possibility of The Last of Us Part 3, revealing that he has a conceptual idea for another chapter in the story. Druckmann emphasized that while the first two games had clear concepts of parental love and the pursuit of justice, the potential third installment would be its own unique narrative. He clarified that a previously mentioned story about Joel's brother, Tommy, was not outlined for The Last of Us Part 3, but rather a separate project that was shelved temporarily due to other priorities at Naughty Dog. Elsewhere in the Last of Us franchise, Schitt's Creek star Catherine O'Hara has been cast in an undisclosed role for the HBO show's second season. 2024 Grammy Winners: o Best pop solo performance: Miley Cyrus, "Flowers" o Best música urbana album: Karol G, "Mañana Será Bonito" o Best country album: Lainey Wilson, "Bell Bottom Country" o Best R&B song: SZA, "Snooze" o Best pop vocal album: Taylor Swift, "Midnights" o Song of the year: "What Was I Made For?" Hope you Dads are strapped in for the ride!First up, it's pig time! Now, who doesn't love a good pig? They're cute, often quite smart, and they've given us some of the best characters in books and movies. Babe, for instance – the little piggy who thought he was a sheepdog. An absolute classic. She's a massive name on YouTube, bringing her humor, gameplay, and reactions to the screen. While it might be a far cry from Saturday morning cartoons or classic family shows, it's a peek into what modern entertainment looks like, and hey, maybe even a chance for some bonding over shared YouTube faves. So, whether you're snuggling up with a beloved pig plushie or trying to crack the code of internet stardom, today's episode is chock-full of fun, intrigue, and maybe a bacon joke or two. In the new biopic, Dalíland, acclaimed director Mary Harron give us a glimpse into the Salvador Dalí's later years in 70s New York City via the immense talents of Academy Award-winner, Sir Ben Kingsley. From her look at attempted assassin Valerie Solanas in I Shot Andy Warhol to the murderous broker Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, Harron has always been attracted to infamous, challenging, and to put it lightly, difficult people. The film is now on demand now wherever you watch movies. On our special summer episode we chat with Harron about Dalíland and much more.
This week on The Treatment, Elvis welcomes Oscar-winning actor Sir Ben Kingsley, whose latest role is as the surrealist painter Salvador Dalí in the film Dalíland. Next, actress and writer-director Zoe Lister-Jones joins to discuss her genre-bending series Slip, now streaming on Roku. And on The Treat, Winning Time writer Rodney Barnes talks about a pair of TV movies (and an adjacent short-lived TV series) which revealed his personal path to Hollywood.
Ten years ago, audiences were treated to what would be THE final stand-alone movie focused on the character of Tony Stark/Iron Man played by Robert Downey Jr.....and for his solo swan song, he helped bring over an old friend to direct, Shane Black. Black had previously directed RDJ in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang eight years prior, a dark action comedy which is among several notable entries in the buddy cop drama written by Black including the original Lethal Weapon. Also returning for this "three-quel" are the previous Iron Man films are Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, and Jon Favreau.....now facing off a couple of new villains played by Guy Pearce and Sir Ben Kingsley. The story focuses on a dangerous new technology developed by one of Stark's rivals which he must face head-on....often without the help of his Iron Man suit no less. And what results is a superhero epic which is fast, funny, action-packed....and takes place during Christmas, go figure!Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
We have an amazing special guest this week as we're joined by Meeg who helped kickstart Bad Dads Film review over three years ago and he picks up exactly where he left off, by not watching this weeks movie. My first car was a burgundy Fiesta with about 800,000 miles on the clock and a sticker of a dog on the rear right hand side window which was impossible to remove no matter how hard I tried which was not very. I don't remember what its number plate was; Peter might suggest a bar code would have been easier for me but then again he's a moron. We discuss the Top 5 Number Plates in movies and television and remember to record it all this time, no minor feat. LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN is one of the worst ever film titles and is also a good barometer of how tastes change because I distinctly remember enjoying the fast paced 2006 crime caper the first time I saw it, with its slick noughties dialogue, non-linear story-telling and dense twisty plot but this time round I found it convoluted, contrived and ridiculously pleased with itself, with a story that scarcely matters, dialogue too affected to be taken seriously and not a lot of interest going on thematically. If you're going to serve up something so self-satisfied and casually offensive you might as well try to create some kind of style that isn't just shamelessly ripping off Tarantino. Aimed at 2 year olds and above, NUMBERBLOCKS is a CBeebies tv series about anthropomorphic blocks of numbers obsessed with the basic mathematical functions, add, subtract, multiply and divide and is approximately 2.71828 times better than PAW PATROL or PJ MASKS or something similar. With little plot to speak of Sidey tired of this before it's 5-minute run time concluded but in fairness he's not precisely the target audience and also he did not vibe as hard as Peter and I did with the song that makes up the bulk of this week's ten themed episode, Ten Again. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads

This week, Phil and David have a funny, emotional and revealing conversation about life, family and show business with Josh Peck, an actor, author, YouTuber and a beautiful old soul who's survived tremendous childhood fame to become a charming young husband and father. Josh opens up about his life growing up with his loving single mother, getting on TV at age 10 with some help from Rosie O'Donnell, achieving fame on Nickelodeon's "Drake & Josh," as well as the good, bad & ugly of being a child actor. Josh discusses working alongside his acting hero Sir Ben Kingsley, rebranding himself as an actor after growing up and dramatically losing weight, and a big moment at the Sundance Film Festival that led to him getting sober. Plus, at Josh's request, Phil and David offer some great advice about fatherhood, lots of Dad jokes and sandwiches from Ike's! Where did you learn who Josh Peck was? Through his award-winning performance in Drake and Josh when he was a teen? Starring next to Ben Kingsley in The Wackness? Or has it been more recently in Disney+ Turner and Hooch? What I learned in this interview is that you likely didn't know who Josh was, because for years, he strenuously devoted himself to developing the Josh he wanted you to see. The comic. The really funny guy. Only through fighting severe drug addiction and finding sobriety did he begin to realize what he hadn't wanted anyone, including himself, to see. Abandoned by his dad, Josh grew up in a very loving but somewhat vagabond partnership with his mom; he decided on the cusp of adolescence that he was going to be successful. And he was. But the pain he'd been hiding from was waiting for him - as it always is. Celebrity overdoses that ended in death - Heath Ledger and Brad Renfro - woke him up to what he was doing. As well as finding what he calls his "Apostles" - a piece of advice he got from Sir Ben Kingsley himself. I loved talking with Josh. His book is funny, yes. But his sincerity and a very mature humility shine through. His journey is more than worth sharing. And his book, Happy People Are Annoying, is available now! So in this episode sponsored by BetterHelp, you can get to know the real Josh Peck. As he now is. And who he intends to be in the future. IMPORTANT OFFER FOR YOU!
