This is my least favorite chapter of the whole book, because it has the most amount of violence & grief. In others ways though, it's an important turning point in the story, since Ender decides he wants to quit the game, & he is also graduated early to Command School by the end of it. This chapter shows how much Ender is affected by the teachers' plans to turn him into some kind of unstoppable force & how he breaks down after hurting a bully, even if they had it coming. The chapter shows us what Ender is capable of, when tested to his limits, & how, ultimately, he is just a boy whose been turned into a soldier & used for his intelligence & isolation as someone who never felt like he fit in. It's a sad chapter, but things will improve from here! The last chapters are probably some of my favorites! Only some of the beginning chapters and the ones in which Ender has real moments of friendship with some of the kids at Battle School compare....But we're nearing the end of this story & the biggest lesson in it all! I haven't read the sequels to Ender's Game... but I might pick it up this time around. I still haven't decided what the next book will be that I decide to share on this podcast. I might pause with the books and go back to guided meditations, affirmations, yoga nidra (I'm getting my certification!
I've been exploring Human Design a lot recently. My favorite podcast is the DayLuna Human Design Podcast. The hosts of that podcast are 2 very intelligent & very loving, confident women that are helping spread the message of the power in coming home to our own true nature and expressing the best parts of ourselves & supporting others to do the same. Listening to them, it's like they're exuding love. I highly recommend...especially listening to their earlier episodes & how they got where they are now based on the power of shifting their beliefs and embracing an abundance mindset. I reflect on how understanding my Energy Type (through Human Design language) is helping me become more confident, love & respect myself & others more, & gain self-efficacy through consistency. ~~~ Ender's Game Whispers begin around 21min...or just after that...a couple seconds into 21min...In this chapter of Ender's Game, we begin to see character development in Valentine & Peter (a break from the camera being on Ender & his life at Battle School) & the philosophy of power gets introduced in a new light. The importance of the changing relationship between a previously & naturally more violent & naturally non-violent person, & how their dynamics shift each other-what they learn from each other... This chapter switches back & forth between Valentine's point of view, & Peter's point of view...to give is the most unfiltered truth from each character's unfiltered thoughts & slightly more filtered speech (especially from Valentine). This is the beginning of a hint at the power of the divine feminine, although not discussed in this way in this chapter.... it's how I see Valentine's power. Her ability to empathize...even with her brother, who she's seen skinning squirrels. How...she is able to empathize with someone whose actions she would never imitate...and how that empathy helps her form strategic alliances & even help keep the balance between her formerly violent brother Peter & the rest of the people that she might view as more "innocent." She also understands her own shadow, as described in this chapter, & doesn't deny it...but understands that one can both enjoy power AND be genuinely caring at the same time- that those 2 ideas or experiences don't have to be separate & can actually potentially help a lot of people when combined. They're only 12 & 10, but their intelligence, care, self-awareness, & even some wisdom.... is above average. As they get older, this only improves and refines. A pretty intellectually intense chapter! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/awhisperrr/support
The real enemy that we are always fighting & learning to befriend as we gain wisdom is the enemy within each of us. Language is important. What if you could be your own best friend? What if you could befriend your shadows? What if befriending your shadows took away their power over you & meant you could also understand that everyone else in this world is just struggling with their own shadows & to achieve any kind of peace, we must learn to have compassion for the shadows within and without? When we cast things out, ostracize, or condemn them, they naturally feel defensive & seek vengeance & sometimes... this leads to terrorism & wars. Peace begins within (our own selves, than our immediate families, then our borader circles of neighbors, friends, coworkers etc... & then the larger societies we inhabit). Ender wants to protect those he cares about & he doesn't want to be a killer, but he finds himself with an army that organically formed through observing his strength & tact. He hates this part of him that Battle School loves and is feeding off of. He hasn't quite fully realized its all a simulation & that he doesn't have to give in to what Battle School is trying to make of him...or have him believe (that he is some kind of savior that will save humanity from the Bugger aliens). In these chapters, he is beginning to question things that he hadn't questioned before though...after Dink challenges his idea about the place or why they're there.... It's getting intense AND... it is only going to get more intense before there is any true wisdom gained by Ender or anyone else in the story and some kind peace is reached or is gotten closer to... This might just be science fiction story... but... it's a great one and I am reflecting on what it means to love radically today... to love ourselves and others who may be different from us...how can we peacefully coexist? How can we learn to appreciate and understand differences and agree to disagree & where does it need to start? Inside our own hearts, and inside our own homes and personal relationships...it's a ripple effect. Fear and hate will breed fear and hate. And a false sense of safety that comes from believing that creating separation to protect our own beliefs will lead to peace and our own or other people's liberation.... When really, the more beautiful, evolved, & peaceful communities, families, and relationships, micro or macro scale, are those in which we embrace and thrive in our differences to make each other and the whole unit stronger. Learn to see someone else's perspective. Why they may have gotten to the place where they're doing what they're doing. Choose Love over Fear when you are in the position to make a choice about it & realize that we all need the nurturance of healthy, non-judgmental, non fear based relationships built on trust, safety, & security to be a good "citizen," or just a generally good, non-violent person in the world. How can you create that for yourself and those in your own immediate life and community? We can't control what's happening in Isreal. Focus on what you can control. Breath. Gratitude. Love. Understanding. Acceptance. Space for Grief. Compassion for it all. All the suffering. An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind. Try to love the one that hates. It's the hardest and most worthwhile thing to do. Not love in the sense of saying that it's okay to agree with violent and hurtful actions, but love in the sense of... a fierce need to understand the root causes of all suffering and how immediate compassion towards your own self & those in your immediate circle has lasting and powerful ripple effects that will keep you and your community resilient & neutralize fears. Its all in our development, attachments, & nervous system. Are you going to program yourself for war, or for love? There is strength in both & we don't have to pretend that it's one or the other. Be strong enough to defend AND love radically at the same time.
Ender is recruited into Battle School & launches off into space! The social engineering builds up, & yet the humanity still remains. The paradoxes of reality began to become more clear to me here (when I read this as a kid). Stay tuned to listen to the "Games," (simulations) that will follow! Bore you??? Pique your interest in the story as the plot builds up? Either way, this story is anything but boring! Thank you for tuning in☺️ I love sharing one of my favorite stories and re-reading it to you!

In this episode we review Ender's Game, what makes it so inspiring to generation after generation of readers, why Ender is so incredibly likeable, discuss empathy as a superpower, and talk about Orson Scott Card's bizarre and outspoken homophobia (and why you should get this book from the library or used book store as a result). As always, we also recommend and discuss some similar stories if you're looking for more great books to read. This week we recommend Speaker for the Dead (the sequel to Ender's Game), Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein, The Giver by Lois Lowry, and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.Youtube link if you'd prefer to watch the episode.NO SPOILERS BOOK SUMMARY: Ender's Game is the story of Ender Wiggin, a boy who is recruited into the elite orbital Battle School. There, young men and women are trained into the next generation of military leaders to command the forces of humanity against the buggers. The buggers are insect-like aliens who have attempted to invade the solar system twice, nearly wiping out humanity in the most recent invasion, and now humanity has sent fleets to attack the bugger worlds and try to avoid a 3rd invasion. Ender is a brilliant, empathetic kid, but has felt mostly alone his entire life. His older brother Peter is a violent sociopath, and only Ender's older sister Valentine prevented Peter from attacking Ender. Now, at battle school, Ender feels even more alone, surrounded by children older than himself and adults who are constantly pushing him to his limits and trying to force him to be violent in an attempt to either break him or mold him into the best military commander Earth has ever produced. NOTE - at the very end of this episode we discuss the twist and the ending of the book. We give you plenty of verbal notice before we talk about any spoilers, but we wanted to give you a heads up here as well just in case. Make sure to tune out at 30:44 if you haven't read the book yet and don't want to spoil anything. We're also excited to announce we've been named one of the best sci fi podcasts of 2022!

Ho Launchies! We've finally worked up the energy to discuss noted homophobe author Orson Scott Card in a conversation that addresses if it's possible to separate the artist from the art (spoilers: the answer is no).Still, Ender's Game is an undeniable classic and we both love it. There's so much to discuss: the xenocide, the treatment of boys and masculinity, how women exist solely to balance out men, childhood martyrdom, and the role of religion. Plus: Asa Butterfield's height, the infamous Battle School fight scenes, how badly Harrison Ford phones it in and debates about whether Viola Davis' Anderson is a made up character. Hey! Welcome back to Stories with Asmr! I hope you enjoy the continuing journey of Ender Wiggin and Battle School! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/emmat-54/message
In this episode of Analog Sci-Fi Book Reviews, I discuss with you my reading of Orson Scott Card's first novel that kicked off the Enderverse, Ender's Game! Winner of both the Hugo and Nebula winner in 1985 for Best Science Fiction Long Form Novel. In this 324 paged Masterpiece, we follow Ender Wiggin, a genius tactician, a third born, and maybe humanity's last hope against an Alien Invasion. In this story, Ender is a pawn in everyone's game. Even if he is only half aware of the decisions being made for him, Ender, a 'third born,' must justify his birth, as Earth has gone through dramatic societal changes. Family sizes are reduced for rationing, and 2nd and 3rd births are rare and only can be approved by the State. When Ender decisively wins a fight at school, he is promoted to Battle School, on a space station off-world. Ender is tested in a social environment where he surpasses his equals in implementing creative military tactics. The Battle Room, where platoons play a type of 'Freeze Lazer Tag'... but in Zero Gravity. In The Battle Room, Ender proves himself to be a Great General. Back on Terra, we also follow Ender's older brother Peter, who was denied entry into Battle School due to being unempathetic. Along with his sister Valentine, who also was denied entry to Battle School for being too empathetic. Their story is one of sibling-civil war—Valentine's desire and failure to control her older brother, who seems bent on World Control. Valentine and Peter sway public option by creating fake identities on online message boards (Social Media). With these fake identities, they can direct the 'adults in the room' to move geopolitics in their favor. And in my options, these are the most interesting chapters in the book! Ender moves quickly up the latter. He easily defeats all other Platoons in Battle School inside the Battle Room. When Ender passes all tests and wins another device physical fight with another Platoon leader, Ender is promoted to Command School. In Command School, Ender meets Mazer Rackham, the man who won Earth the 1st Bugger Invasion. Ender is given command of all ships, with all his friends under his command. He wins battles; he loses battles. When the Earth Leadership attends Ender's last test. Ender is given a final variable. The Bugger Home World. With all ships, Ender destroys the Bugger Homeworld and every living thing on the planet. It is revealed that Ender was in command of all ships for the entire time he was in Command School. Score: (BIG) Thumbs Up! This book reads likes Masterpiece. The voice of Ender is so fully realized, you understand who Ender is and what he's experiencing. The Battle School chapters are fun. But, it is what's happening back on Terra that I personally find most interesting! I am more motivated to read Shadows of the Hegemon than, say, Speaker of the Dead, on this fact alone. The use of social media and fake identities, being the book was written in 1985, is jaw-dropping. Along with open discussions about the value of lies, the justification for a preemptive strike, and towering of the individual over society. All these points make the story richer and leave the reader with a sense of loss and the knowledge that the choices you make will follow you into tomorrow. A united Georgia response to the Coronavirus might be a fond wish, but it’s not happening—even as case numbers spike and hospitals are stretched. The governor and Atlanta’s mayor traded shots; the governor again banned local governments from requiring masks—even as more cities did just that; and some school districts decided to open with online learning, despite funding cutoff threats from the president. Meanwhile, Georgia’s controversial new abortion law was blocked in Federal court. WABE political contributor Denis O’Hayer looks into all of it, with Republican strategist Brian Robinson and former Atlanta City Council president Cathy Woolard, who’s filling in for Tharon Johnson this time.
In the eleventh episode of the podcast, Jo and Colin are ready to go from Battle School to Command School with no problem, because this week they're talking about Ender's Game!
In Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, we meet Ender Wiggin, a six-year-old boy who has been identified as a high-potential child soldier in a future human society readying for war with an alien species known as “the Buggers.” To prepare him for life as a military leader, high-ranking officials send him to Battle School, where they put him through a series of war games and simulations while isolating him from his peers in an effort to hone his fighting skills. Ender excels, and in the book's twist ending, we discover that he's been given way more responsibility than he expected. On Episode 59, we consider the book's real antagonist, talk about what Ender's Game has to say about good and evil and the moral implications of war, and discuss the lack of representation and social progress in a book meant to portray a more evolved future. We also spend quite a bit of time at the top of the show talking about the author's problematic politics. This week's guest is Katy Rose Pool, author of the forthcoming YA novel, There Will Come A Darkness. Follow Katy on Instagram (@katyrosepool) and Twitter (@KatyPool).
