What happens when Hollywood decides smart, fearless women don't sell? We sit down with Kay A. Oliver, award-winning author and former industry insider, to explore how she turned that “no” into twelve page-turning novels, a loyal readership, and growing momentum toward the screen.Kay shares a writing process built for consistency and flow: visualizing the opening and ending, stopping mid-scene to avoid writer's block, and using novellas to test ideas, master KDP formatting, and later expand into full-length novels. She explains how deep research fuels her globe-trotting mysteries, why accuracy builds reader trust, and how Road to Elysium weaves grief, mentorship, and second chances with the emotional resonance of Gran Torino and A Man Called Ove.Then we get tactical. Kay breaks down a repeatable indie marketing system: submitting to the right book awards for credibility, investing in press releases that can generate 40k–60k impressions, and running targeted ads where readers already are. We talk platform choice by audience and timing, tracking ROI through the Amazon dashboard, creating cinematic book trailers, and using BookFunnel and KU promos to grow your newsletter through shared audiences. If you're an indie author looking to write faster, market smarter, and build a catalog that lasts, this Have a comment? What do we really know about policing? The movies are so sensational and many of the multitude of book covers are bold, and brassy. If you want an authentic insiders' view try "Tightrope" by Jenn Hyland. Jennifer originally served with a west coast municipal police service, went on to the RCMP, and ultimately was Deputy Chief Constable in Surrey, BC. A very personal story, there is the career arc, but also how the work impacted herself and her vision of family; it is more than that. It has elements of a history shared by all who serve. Long hours, late nights are an accepted part of the process, but those - and the following of cases to their end - made for stress, MS, PTSD, and her ultimate decision to conclude her service. She hopes by sharing that it will help others who protect the vulnerable.Come along for the conversation, learn more, and walk the tightrope with her.

We can all relax knowing that at no point will Paul & Eli be singing or inventing new characters or retreating into waves of personal verbal abuse. No siree Bob! They are searching for proper culture for this episode. Paul's found a book to discuss and dissect for his “Page Turners” segment. He's found a book called “Read Me Out Loud” which contains a poem for every day of the year, and he decides to pick out a few choice dates to see if there is anything inspiring for Eli to ultimately crap on. To wrap up the show, there is a new “Gannon's Golden Game” to enjoy called “Bargain Hunter”. It's from MB Games and challenges the Cheap Chaps to put their money where their mouths are. A highly sought-after expert witness in medical malpractice trials, he is board certified in internal medicine, hematology and rheumatology, and has published over a hundred scientific studies in peer-reviewed journals. On the strength of the critical and popular reception of TRANSPLANT, Leonard Goldberg was off to the races as an author of medical thrillers. He began writing a series of new books, with a continuing main character named Joanna Blalock. The "Joanna Blalock" series features a forensic pathologist at a prestigious university medical center who has a Holmesian knack for solving murders. The books, published in the U.S. by Dutton and Signet, include DEADLY MEDICINE, A DEADLY PRACTICE, DEADLY CARE, DEADLY HARVEST, DEADLY EXPOSURE, LETHAL MEASURES, FATAL CARE, BRAINWAVES and FEVER CELL.Leonard Goldberg's novels have been selections of the Book of the Month Club, French and Czech book clubs, and The Mystery Guild. His position is such that he answers only to the king and the prime minister. In 1918, during the height of the Great War, Joanna Holmes and the Watsons receive a late-night, clandestine visit from Sir William Radcliffe, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, who brings with him an agonizing tale of blackmail; a case so sensitive that it can only be spoken of in the confines of 221B Baker Street.Sir William's family has been forced to pay exorbitant sums for several of the photographs, but even more salacious pictures remain in the blackmailer's possession—and will no doubt carry greater demands and threats. Scotland Yard cannot be involved, for fear of public disclosure. It thus falls on the shoulders of Joanna and the Watsons to expose the blackmailer and procure the photographs before irreparable harm comes to the chancellor and his family.https://www.leonardgoldberg.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Somehow, against all the odds, CheapShow has finally won something! Paul & Eli are in high spirits this week as they celebrate their recent “Golden Lobes” podcast awards win! It was a fantastic moment that was only 10 years in the making. This success probably won't go to their heads. At all. It's a bit of a wordy episode this week, as Paul is supplying two books for his “Page Turners” segment. His charity shop discoveries involve one book based on the kids TV show “Bangers & Mash”, and the other is a story puzzle book from the legendary “Usbourne Publishing”. The Cheap Chaps dive into them both to learn more, and if you are lucky, you'll get some story time action from Eli himself! Finally, Gannon pulls out another “Golden Game” to play. For this edition, he's brought along an electronic game based on the popular 1980s ITV game show “Name That Tune”. Sadly, as in most episodes, Eli will find a way to ruin the fun. Whether that's by pretending to be a Scouser or by simply opening his mouth and letting the madness spill out. No matter how dumb or gross this week's podcast is, remember it won a ruddy award! Ontario reader Emma Sweeney wants to explore books that incorporate elements from the horror genre. She's not interested in books that give her nightmares, but she's found that these stories often prompt reflective and meaningful reading experiences. Today, she and Anne talk about finding titles that include horror elements without being truly horrifying. They also tackle Emma's other reading conundrum: she'd like to get better at discerning whether a book is a good fit for her or not before she spends 100 pages of precious reading time on stories that turn out to be not what she's looking for. We expect this conversation will resonate with so many readers this season, no matter where you fall on the spooky reading spectrum. Let us know if you have recommendations for Emma by leaving a comment on our show notes, where you'll also find the full list of titles mentioned today. That's at whatshouldireadnextpodcast.com/449. A quick note: in today's conversation Emma and Anne talk about a story featuring a hurricane in North Carolina. Because this conversation was recorded before Hurricane Helene caused so much destruction, there's no mention of the recent storm. Our thoughts are with all those affected. It's time to submit your request for our upcoming gift recommendation episode, where we will help you find the books and bookish goodies for everyone on your holiday list.
