His position is such that he answers only to the king and the prime minister. In 1918, during the height of the Great War, Joanna Holmes and the Watsons receive a late-night, clandestine visit from Sir William Radcliffe, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, who brings with him an agonizing tale of blackmail; a case so sensitive that it can only be spoken of in the confines of 221B Baker Street.Sir William's family has been forced to pay exorbitant sums for several of the photographs, but even more salacious pictures remain in the blackmailer's possession—and will no doubt carry greater demands and threats. Scotland Yard cannot be involved, for fear of public disclosure. It thus falls on the shoulders of Joanna and the Watsons to expose the blackmailer and procure the photographs before irreparable harm comes to the chancellor and his family.https://www.leonardgoldberg.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Somehow, against all the odds, CheapShow has finally won something! Paul & Eli are in high spirits this week as they celebrate their recent “Golden Lobes” podcast awards win! It was a fantastic moment that was only 10 years in the making. This success probably won't go to their heads. At all. It's a bit of a wordy episode this week, as Paul is supplying two books for his “Page Turners” segment. His charity shop discoveries involve one book based on the kids TV show “Bangers & Mash”, and the other is a story puzzle book from the legendary “Usbourne Publishing”. The Cheap Chaps dive into them both to learn more, and if you are lucky, you'll get some story time action from Eli himself! Finally, Gannon pulls out another “Golden Game” to play. For this edition, he's brought along an electronic game based on the popular 1980s ITV game show “Name That Tune”. Sadly, as in most episodes, Eli will find a way to ruin the fun. Whether that's by pretending to be a Scouser or by simply opening his mouth and letting the madness spill out. No matter how dumb or gross this week's podcast is, remember it won a ruddy award!

After many happy years on the road as a side musician, Kendrick has blossomed as a solo artist since issuing her debut EP, Tear Things Apart, in 2020. Heralded as “hauntingly lovely” (Paste Magazine), you won't want to miss a Carolyn Kendrick live performance. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Kendrick crisscrossed the country with her former duo project, The Page Turners. She has shared the stage with beloved artists such as Darol Anger, Bruce Molsky, Aoife O'Donovan, Kaia Kater, Hannah Read, Margo Price, The Clements Brothers, and Jacksonport. She has played festivals such as Newport Folk Festival, Greyfox Bluegrass Festival, Savannah Music Festival, and won awards such as the Freshgrass ‘Best Duo' Award, The Fletcher Bright Award, and was the Fall 2023 Composer In Residence at the University of the Pacific. In addition to her songwriting career, Kendrick is active in the Bluegrass and Old-Time fiddle scene and produced and written music for the award-winning podcasts You're Wrong About (Podcast of the Year, iHeart Radio) and You Are Good. Her forthcoming album, Each Machine, is a collection of traditional and original political folk songs inspired by her time researching The Satanic Panic for the history podcast You're Wrong About. These songs are modern, electric re-imaginings of hymns, murder ballads, pagan chanting, and even songs of devil-worship. The first single, The Devil's Nine Questions, is available for pre-order now and will be released October 1st, 2024. The full album, both physical + digital copies, as well as an accompanying zine of behind-the scenes photography and essays, will be released 12.6.24 on High Occulture Records. To learn more about Carolyn, please visit carolynkendrick.com.Thank you for tuning in! Due to circumstances beyond Paul & Eli's control, they're recording this week's episode from inside the original House of Pickles… And Eli couldn't be happier! To “celebrate” the Cheap Chaps are going back to basics with some good old fashioned content. To get things going, Eli has a red hot Sauce Report in more ways than one. He's sourced two sauces from a nearby convenience store, which was handy, as its conveniently down the road from his place! Paul delivers another Page Turner segment with a book he's been trying to get into the show for ages. As it transpires, this book got a bit more of a reputation following its appearance in a recent Ghostbusters movie! This publication promises a world of “Strange But True” stories guaranteed to confuse the podcast hosts. In other news, CheapShow invents a new pet and, sadly, it's exactly what you think “Nougat The Saucy Horse” is! Ontario reader Emma Sweeney wants to explore books that incorporate elements from the horror genre. She's not interested in books that give her nightmares, but she's found that these stories often prompt reflective and meaningful reading experiences. Today, she and Anne talk about finding titles that include horror elements without being truly horrifying. They also tackle Emma's other reading conundrum: she'd like to get better at discerning whether a book is a good fit for her or not before she spends 100 pages of precious reading time on stories that turn out to be not what she's looking for. We expect this conversation will resonate with so many readers this season, no matter where you fall on the spooky reading spectrum. Let us know if you have recommendations for Emma by leaving a comment on our show notes, where you'll also find the full list of titles mentioned today. That's at whatshouldireadnextpodcast.com/449. A quick note: in today's conversation Emma and Anne talk about a story featuring a hurricane in North Carolina. Because this conversation was recorded before Hurricane Helene caused so much destruction, there's no mention of the recent storm. Our thoughts are with all those affected. It's time to submit your request for our upcoming gift recommendation episode, where we will help you find the books and bookish goodies for everyone on your holiday list. Ep 396: Freddie Starr Swallowed My Soul

Often, the “Paul's Page Turners” segment of the show can offer up some wild and unfathomable books to investigate, but this week's choice is a truly mad experience. Paul and Eli may be skeptics when it comes to all things supernatural, but they're willing to hear a story out if it shows promise. The book in question was sold in Cancer Research Charity Shops across the UK and is entitled, “The Show Must Go On: Book Two”. Written by a possibly naïve believer, Malcom Thorogood's proof of life after death comes in the form of visitations from one of the UK's most notorious 1980s light entertainers… Freddie Starr! The man who allegedly ate a hamster (!!) and dealt in high energy, near crazed comedy is now back from the dead to offer some mindboggling experiences from beyond the grave. Paul is gobsmacked and Eli doesn't believe one bit of it! But hey, if you don't like ghosts there's an “Off Brand Brand Off” segment to enjoy. Eli must rank FIVE orange soda brands to see if the Fanta or Tango brands are up to scratch compared to some considerably cheaper alternatives! See? There's something for everyone!
