Welcome to episode one hundred and one of New Creation Conversations. This week's conversation is with my wonderful friend and gifted thinker, Dr. Kara Powell. Kara is chief of leadership formation, the executive director of Fuller Youth Institute, and professor of youth and family ministry at Fuller Seminary. She holds degrees from Stanford, Bethel Seminary, and her PhD is in Practical theology from Fuller.Kara also serves as a Youth and Family Strategist for Orange and has served in a number of local church ministries. Just two or three years ago Christianity Today named Kara as one of the “50 Women to Watch” in Christian leadership. She has written and contributed to a number of books and has been on the podcast with me before. This time, Kara and I talk about her soon to be released book written by Kara and her research partners. The book's title is Faith Beyond Youth Group: 5 Ways to Form Character and Cultivate Lifelong Discipleship – published by Baker Books with a release date of November 7. Building on two decades of the Fuller Youth Institute's work and incorporating extensive new research and interviews, Faith Beyond Youth Group identifies the reasons youth ministry often flops both short-term and long-term, and offers five ways adult youth leaders can cultivate character for a lifetime of growing closer to Jesus rather than drifting away. One reviewer calls it “a game-changing resource for anyone in youth ministry.” It is a wonderful resource and an enlightening conversation.

Kara Powell is a veteran of researching young people and bringing practical ministry ideas to pastors and leaders in churches. Jason Ballard sat down with Kara to hear some of the latest research being released in her new book 3 Big Questions That Change Every Teenager. They begin by highlighting why this all matters and what is at stake when we talk about discipling kids and youth in our communities. Kara highlights both the ways churches can impact the lives of young people positively, but also how young people can help transform churches. Going off research from past projects as well, Kara shares about what churches reaching young people are doing well and how pastors of kids and youth ministries are best discipling their people to follow Jesus. Jason also explores with Kara the ways parents are the primary way of discipling young people and what it means for pastors to partner with them. Dani is a multi-business owner/entrepreneur. With a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, she always dreamed of going on to get her Master's in School Psychology and one day working in the schools helping children. After becoming a mom at the age of 21, the masters program was put on hold and Dani went back to working directly with children as the Director of a childcare center. After nine years of owning & operating the childcare center, Dani knew she needed to put her years of experience to more use and serve families in a different way. So six months ago, Dani started her fourth business as a Family Strategist and has focused her attention to helping families strategize sustainable habits within their relationships, routines, and nutrition. Dani has already helped hundreds of families and is on a mission to help hundreds more through her new coaching programs. It is not uncommon for people to ask Dani how she can operate four separate businesses and be a mom of three children. After years of dealing with great amounts of stress and chaos each day, Dani has implemented practices to keep her home life positive, consistent and a safe haven for her family. With the unprecedented times we are currently in, these practices have been very useful and Dani can not wait to share them with you!
