“I don't have a sound that I'm trying to make the choir fit into. I'm trying to understand and uncover the palette of sounds that are in front of me and then expand our sense of what we can sound like. This happens through the community building process, because the more we honor each individual and allow them to bring themselves into that rehearsal space, then the fuller and richer we are.”Dr. Joel Tranquilla (he/him/his) is a conductor and music educator noted for his versatile musicianship and creative programming. Originally from Fredericton, Joel is thrilled to have returned home to assume the position of Artistic Director of the Halifax Camerata Singers and Chorus Master of Symphony Nova Scotia. In addition to his work at TWU, Joel served as the Artistic Director of the Valley Festival Singers in Abbotsford and was the conductor of the award-winning Coastal Sound Youth Choir in Coquitlam. A singing member of the Canadian Chamber Choir since 2007, he was named the ensemble's Associate Conductor in 2013. As such, he contributes to the programming and long-term artistic visioning of that organization. How does one become a missionary without ever leaving the country or even leaving town? Brandon Bell might be wondering the same thing as he finds himself back in the town where he went to college to become a coach and teacher. In this conversation we talk about Brandon's journey of discipleship, how he got into ministry, his take on campus ministry as an opportunity to be a missionary, his passion for training students and young adults for mission, and his new book. Brandon is the Director of Campus Missions with the Christian Campus Community and also preaches with the Preaching Team at Singing Oaks Church in Denton, TX. He loves sharing the Gospel in real and relatable ways with young adults from various cultures. Brandon also enjoys preaching, travel, mission trips, and adventure sports. His favorite adventure is being married to his best friend and raising their amazing daughters together. His mission in life can be summed up by 1 Corinthians 9:22 “I have become all things to all people, so that I may by all means save some.” Brandon just published his 1st book, Trailhead: Beginning Your Journey with God. This book resulted from many years of guiding teenagers and young adults on a path to finding God and finding purpose. Brandon received his call to youth ministry after teaching and coaching. From there he answered God's missionary call to what he believes is the most important and influential mission field in the U.S., the university campus. Their campus ministry serves students from UNT, TWU, & NCTC and they have recently launched a residency program called Campus Missions Training. He desires to see more people and churches support and engage in campus missions. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Nicholas Boni, writer, photographer and musician based in Brooklyn, & Cea Weaver, tenant organizer with Housing Justice For All in New York, to discuss Nicholas's recent piece in Jacobin entitled "Social Housing for New York Is on the Table". Then, Sam speaks with John Samuelsen, International President of the Transport Workers Union (TWU), to discuss the prospects of a commuter rail worker strike in Boston, where they've been without a contract for over 200 days. First, Sam runs through updates on the performance of ‘uncommitted' in the Washington primary, the House voting to sort of ban TikTok, questions about more GOP testimony, Trump's legal battles, the House GOP, the Federal Judiciary Committee, US labor action, and aid for Ukraine, before parsing through the recent TikTok “ban” legislation rushed through the House. Nicholas Boni and Cea Weaver then join, diving right into the complete affordability crisis facing New York State, resulting from a lack of existing stable, affordable housing and investment into new permanent, affordable housing projects, and their solution of a Social Housing Development Authority (SHDA), a statewide tenant's rights coalition, funded and supported by the state, that would work to rezone, maintain, rehabilitate, acquire, and construct new affordable housing projects across New York State, relying on a much broader base than existing housing authorities like NYCHA, allowing for them to function on a much broader, and much more effective scale. Expanding on this, Weaver and Boni look at the SHDA as a true public-sector alternative to the speculative role of private real estate, walking through the process and legislation SHDA would rely on in their acquisition of housing and land for maintenance, rehabilitation, and construction, and the role the Authority would play in working with to take over existing housing and establish tenant-run cooperatives. After walking through some real-world lasting examples of this kind of housing infrastructure, Cea and Nicholas wrap up by assessing the current state of the fight, and what to look for moving forward. John Samuelson then joins, walking through the TWU's role representing transit workers across the US, before zooming in on the ongoing issues facing Local-2054, with active profiteering and exploitation from the French company Keolis in their management of Massachusetts' Commuter Rail, all bankrolled by the US taxpayer. After walking through the long battle between the local and Keolis in their ongoing contract negotiations, Samuelson walks through the ongoing exploitation faced by transit mechanics and coach cleaners on the South Side, and the role of the MBTA and Massachusetts DOT in allowing this brutal exploitation. Wrapping up, John Samuelson assesses the future of Local-2054's fight, and what we can do to support them. And in the Fun Half: Sam discusses the future of MR, the bad look for both Merrick Garland and the GOP that is Robert Hur's testimony, and revelations around Trump's active attempt to steal classified documents. Meffi from Texas discusses the dangers of right-wing authoritarian thugs, Sly from Staten Island on the crime-spike myth, and Angela from Alberta explores the progressive factions of Canadian news media. Candace Owens goes on in on the transvestigation of Brigitte Macron, Ken Buck leaves the GOP hanging dry as he kills their House Majority, and A from Washington dives into some context for Brett Weinstein's dishonorable discharge from academia, plus, your calls and IMs! Bobbie Bratton -Clinical Executive, SaferCare Texas, UNT Health Science Center, is a board certified family nurse practitioner North Texas universities unite to provide free care to underserved and uninsured population HSC and Remote Area Medical to bring free, quality medical, dental and vision care to DFW. Four prestigious North Texas universities are joining an initiative this year to provide free health care at a clinic offered by The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth and RAM®, a national nonprofit provider of free health clinics. HSC and RAM have partnered on the clinic for the past two years, and the Texas Christian University College of Nursing, Texas Woman's University, Texas A&M University School of Dentistry and The College of Health Care Professions all will send faculty and student volunteers to this year's clinic Nov. 4 and 5 in Fort Worth. “It is a tremendous act of caring for our community when so many colleges and universities unify as one to serve,” said Jessica Rangel, HSC executive vice president of health systems. “We are entering the season of giving, and what better way to kick it off than this incredible collaboration?” When recruiting medical volunteers, HSC pulls from its six colleges. But since the university doesn't have a dental program, finding dental volunteers has always been a challenge — until this year. TWU, Texas A&M and The College of Health Care Professions are sending their dental students and faculty to serve in the dental bays at RAM. The TCU College of Nursing also will be providing services where needed. “Learning that numerous programs were eager to send dental and medical student volunteers in support of our clinic was moving,” Rangel said. “It's a powerful testament to our commitment to our mission: to create solutions for a healthier community.” This is not Texas A&M's first RAM experience. This year will be the second time it has sent students and faculty. “We love that our students are able to volunteer at RAM again this year,” said Angela Wilson, program coordinator at Texas A&M's School of Dentistry. “There is such a need beyond their community, and it's so important to us that they get to see it firsthand. We hope this collaboration with HSC and RAM will continue for years to come.” This year's clinic will take place at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Ray I. Riley Center, 1701 W. Boyce Ave. in Fort Worth. RAM will offer free dental cleanings, fillings and extractions; eye exams, glaucoma testing and eyeglass prescriptions with glasses made on-site; women's health exams; and general medical exams. RAM services are first-come, first-served, and no ID is required. For more information about RAM's pop-up clinics or to volunteer at future clinics, visit www.ramusa.org, or call 865-579-1530. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Democrat Leftists and their homosexual and “trans” activists demonstrated in Denton how they are the enemies of civil public discourse and tolerance. No surprise it happened at Texas Woman's University that, like neighbor UNT, a hotbed for radical leftist action.Abbott's ceremonial bill signing of SB15, “Save Women's Sports Act,” showed just how strongly the homosexual lobby opposes protections for women. It also shows, once again, how Abbott has done little to nothing to use his political power to appoint university regents to rein in the Leftist chaos on our public campuses. TWU police just citing people, or one person, for Class C assault (a ticket) when spitting upon people and blocking exits can carry higher charges just shows where TWU stands on the matter. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.A needed slap down of Dallas-based Southwest Airlines (not the firm it once was) in court over its denigration of religious freedom.
