Enneagram 5 parents Lauren Rupley and Kris Plunkett talk curiosity, intentionality, and energy management in family life. They describe how fives' love of learning, patient problem-solving, and reflective nature become strengths—sparking great questions, thoughtful rhythms, and delight in kids' unique wiring. They also name common struggles: over-researching instead of trusting intuition, scarce-energy mindsets, stepping back to observe rather than engaging in hard moments, and turning kids' challenges into a referendum on their own preparedness. Practical help includes building daily downtime, modeling conscious tech boundaries, asking “Is this about me or about my child?”, showing vulnerability, and finding mentor parents a few steps ahead. Before you complain about how selfish and crazy your kids are, we ought to look in the mirror.
When I think about the kind of parent I want to be, I often think about my dad—steady, grounding, and always there. His quiet consistency has shaped so much of how I show up for my own children. And that's why Glen Henry's new book, Father Yourself First: Everything You Need to Become the Father Your Family Deserves, caught my attention. Even though Glen wrote this book for fathers, the message is one every parent needs: to be a steady presence for our children, we first have to become our own source of stability. This conversation will help you see your partner—and yourself—with more empathy. It's an honest, funny look at what happens when we slow down, let each other learn, and create a home where everyone is growing. Plus, you'll also hear:
It seems like such a dangerous world. It's what keeps you up at night as a parent—what if, what if, what if?

For generations, some parents have tried withholding praise, withholding pride, withholding approval so that their kids don't feel entitled to it. The idea is that this will make them hungry, make them really work for it.
Your focus may shift in parenthood, but that's what's meant to happen.

Have you ever caught yourself second-guessing something as small as what to make for dinner or as big as how to respond to a struggling child and felt completely paralyzed? As moms, we make thousands of decisions every day, and it's easy to lose confidence in our ability to choose well, especially when we're weighed down by “shoulds” from outside voices. In today's episode, I'm joined by Jessica Frew, a decision coach who helps women rebuild trust in themselves and make choices that feel aligned with their true values. Remember when every kid wanted to be an astronaut? Not so much anymore. Today, Ryan talks with former NASA astronaut Terry Virts about why that dream has faded, how we can get kids excited about adventure again, and why critical thinking might be the most important skill for the next generation. At 17, Terry Virts joined the Air Force and went on to become an F-16 fighter pilot and test pilot. He has flown combat missions over Iraq, tested the world's fastest jets and commanded the International Space Station. He's orbited Earth 3,400 times and has spent 213 days in space total. His military decorations include the NASA Space Flight Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Aerial Achievement Medal, NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, et al. He retired from NASA in August 2016 and is currently running for U.S. Senate from Texas. Holley Gerth is an expert on introversion and extroversion and what a great conversation we had, I loved it! Every bit of it. I feel like I learned so much about myself, about kids that I counsel, it was fascinating! She said one question that I think would be a game changer in understanding kids. So make sure you listen all the way through. At the very end, she had some incredible ideas for helping introverted kids who might feel a bit overwhelmed in going to church. So hang in there to the very end, this episode is packed full of good stuff! Questions Holley recommends you ask the family members in your home: What does happiness feel to you? What would make this (Christmas) holiday feel happy to you? What would make this vacation/holiday feel happy to you? What do you think would make it hardest for you? What is one thing you want to make sure we do? What is one thing you're worried that we may have to do? How can I keep the stimulation of this event at a manageable level for my kid? Where is your level at right now, what do you need to feel more comfortable? How can I love you well right now? What is one small shift/step that we can make as a family today? Curiosity isn't just for children—it's a lifelong pursuit that brings joy, fulfillment, and wisdom. And like any worthwhile pursuit, it requires intention and effort.
Have you ever noticed that some of the parents in Disney movies…aren't exactly the best role models? They love their kids deeply, but their fears, expectations, and blind spots often get in the way of connection. As I rewatched a few of these classics recently, I couldn't help but think, "These parents could really use the Self-Assured Motherhood program!" In this episode, I'm sharing three SAM principles through the lens of Disney families—because studying cartoon characters makes everything more fun (and surprisingly relatable!):

We talk a lot about self-care as moms, but most of the time, the examples we're given (bubble baths, massages, solo Target runs) only scratch the surface. The truth is, there's not one kind of self-care. There are actually several distinct forms of care we need, and they each serve a different purpose in our lives and in our motherhood. When we only reach for one type, it makes sense that we still feel burned out, even after “taking a break.” This week on the podcast, I'm joined by self-care coach Mia Hemstad, who shares her simple, powerful framework: The 4B's of Self-Care© to help us better identify what we need (and when!). You'll hear:
While being a parent is very different today than it was in ancient Rome, we modern parents face a similar daily battle for mindfulness.
Emotional resilience is one of the most powerful skills you can develop as a mom - and let's be honest, it's also one of the hardest to master. From toddler tantrums to teen drama, from work stress to family dynamics… there's no shortage of moments that can leave you feeling stretched thin and emotionally spent. And there's no season that tests this quite like summer, when the routines are loose, the noise is constant, and everyone seems to need something from you all day long. That's why I'm re-airing this powerful conversation with Dr. Jen Riday, a mom of six with a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies and host of the Vibrant Happy Women podcast. Jen combines research-backed wisdom with real-life experience to help women build emotional resilience... and the healthy boundaries that make it possible. Because here's the truth: You can't be emotionally resilient without boundaries. Boundaries aren't about controlling others, they're about protecting your peace. Learning to say, “This is what I will do to care for myself,” is one of the most courageous and transformative skills you can develop as a mom. In this episode, you'll learn:
Things were more straightforward then. Things were easier then. Things were better back then. You've heard your parents' generation say some version of this.
Right now, we have the opportunity to teach our children about justice not just through words, but through action. In this solo episode, Ryan opens up about taking his kids to a protest and how that moment became a defining lesson in courage, justice, and civic responsibility. He shares how he talked to them about activism, why it's not enough to tell our kids what we believe, and how real change starts with the example we set. As parents, we worry about having all the answers. Being a great parent is actually more about asking the right questions and not necessarily even of our kids, but of ourselves. In today's episode, Ryan shares 15 powerful questions that any parent can ask to become better at their most important job. Because the right questions at the right time can change how we think about things. They can change how we understand things. They can give us a new perspective.
Our children and grandchildren will live in the world created by your choices.

I've never considered myself a person who cares about fashion or "style" so when I first stumbled across Julie Allen on Instagram, I didn't expect to stick around. But something about the way she talked about clothes felt different. It was kind, approachable, and freeing. Julie teaches women how to embrace style tools instead of style rules, and as I listened to her, I realized how much that philosophy overlaps with how I think about motherhood. There's no one right way to be a mom—or to get dressed. It's about finding what fits you and building a life you love from there. Julie is a mom of six and a style educator who's passionate about helping women reconnect with themselves through the way they show up each day. In this episode, she shares three style principles that double as beautiful life lessons for moms—and they might just shift the way you think about both your wardrobe and your parenting. We'll talk about: ✨ How to use style (and motherhood) tools instead of rigid rules ✨ Why you're allowed to express different parts of yourself—on any given day ✨ The importance of building your motherhood on a foundation of your core values Whether or not you've ever cared much about fashion, this episode will help you feel more confident in showing up as you.
