Could it be that a pattern has emerged with another Friday edition of Charlottesville Community Engagement? And how will this burgeoning habit be affected by the WTJU Rock Marathon, a weeklong celebration of music that will preempt the April 25 radio edition of this newsletter? I'm Sean Tubbs, and I look forward to seeing how that goes.Until then, here are the stories for this edition:* Albemarle Supervisors will not move forward with a personal property tax rate increase in 2026 (read the story)* However, Supervisors do find an additional $2 million for the Affordable Housing Investment Fund (story forthcoming at C-Ville Weekly)* Area planners hear from VDOT about a desire to coordinate transportation projects (read the story)* UVA representative to city PC reports on various projects including new access for Center for Politics (read the story)* Charlottesville's Department of Neighborhood Development Services announces changes to the city's Development Code (read the story)A programming note for CCE-1035AThe second story uses two soundbites from the first story. That's because I opted to write up a follow-up piece on Albemarle Affordable Housing Investment Program for C-Ville Weekly. This timely panel discussion explores one of the most pressing concerns facing families today - the rise of anxiety among young children. The event is free and open to the public. Community members, educators, parents, and caregivers are warmly invited to attend.Thoughts at the end of CCE-1035AAt publication I still have to find seven more minutes for the version that will air on WTJU tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. That is a volunteer activity for me and this podcast is the companion. Next week there is no radio show and sometimes without that deadline it is difficult to get the motivation to produce the podcast.I do not have the capacity yet to hire an editor and in the meantime, producing the audio version before I do the print version goes a long way to improving quality. I am hopeful to hire an editor, but that will take bringing in additional resources. While paid subscriptions through Substack help, I now have a way people can make charitable contributions to this journalistic enterprise. You can do that here. I am not going to give up the audio even though the total amount of listeners is fairly low. I know many enjoy it, and that's enough for me to keep going as long as I can.For now, I post this image to give Substack something to use as the main frame. Questions? Comments? Calm in the Storm: Zen Ways to Cultivate Stability in an Anxious World is intended to help readers meet the current polycrisis with love and stability, but also forcefulness and resilience. According to Plum Village tradition, Jo and Brother Phap Huu recorded two episodes responding to questions by listeners which connect to the book's themes. But what we have seen in some of the most impactful work is that, when people take the time to be still, to listen, and to embrace and hold feelings and emotions and these projects in a calm manner, they are able to direct, lead, and not be carried away with the force field of anxiety, of fear, of restlessness.” “Mindfulness is only true mindfulness if it’s generating love and compassion.” “We can say so many things about Buddhist history and Buddhist philosophy, but what the Buddha transmitted to us and really wanted was for us to ask the question, ‘How can I put these practices into daily life?'” “When everything is changing, the most important thing is to also know what needs to remain the same.” “Our mindfulness should not be a blockage to other people’s engagement with us – but, at the same time, we do have to have boundaries. We do have to have clarity.” “Mindfulness is to lead an ethical life. If you’re practicing mindfulness and you’re continuing to cause harm to the earth, to living beings, to yourself and your loved ones, maybe that is wrong mindfulness. Anxiety is everywhere right now. It's in our culture, in our homes, and often in our own nervous systems. So how do we raise brave, resilient children without unintentionally reinforcing the fears we're trying to protect them from? I'm Dr. Shelly Mahon, your host, and in this episode of the Parenting Well Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Samantha Grigsby, clinical psychologist and founder of Foothills CBT, to break down what every parent needs to understand about how anxiety works and how to interrupt the cycle that keeps it growing. We explore how to distinguish normal developmental anxiety from anxiety that needs support, and why avoidance, though well-intended, often strengthens fear over time. Dr. Grigsby explains the anxiety cycle in practical terms and shares why Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) are gold-standard treatments for anxiety and OCD. We also discuss how rescuing, over-accommodating, minimizing stress, or offering constant reassurance can unintentionally perpetuate anxiety, as well as what supportive parenting actually looks like when a child is struggling. Finally, we examine the cultural pressures amplifying stress today and how to keep our own anxiety from shaping the emotional climate of our homes. Because bravery isn't the absence of anxiety. It's feeling it — and moving forward anyway. Register to hear her talk at the Stress & Anxiety Conference  In this podcast, we talk about: How to tell when anxiety is normal and when it's limiting your child The hidden ways loving parents accidentally reinforce anxiety Why avoidance and reassurance make anxiety stronger What actually works (CBT & ERP explained simply) How to stop passing your stress onto your child Key Takeaway: Avoidance might be contributing to your child's anxiety. The very things we do to reduce our child's distress can quietly make it stronger. Support and accommodation are not the same thing. One builds resilience. The other builds dependence. Do you see this in your family? Reassurance feels loving but it can train the brain to doubt itself. What happens when children learn to tolerate uncertainty instead Bravery doesn't mean calm. It means moving forward while your nervous system is loud. Your anxiety shapes the emotional climate of your home. Not because you're failing but because nervous systems are contagious. We live in an expectation-amplified world. Unrealistic standards, social comparison, and constant input may be fueling more stress than we realize. Self-criticism keeps the cycle alive. Self-compassion may be one of the most powerful anxiety interventions for both parent and child. You don't have to eliminate anxiety all together to raise a confident child. You may need to look at whether you are protecting them from having uncomfortable feelings. We’re controlling our actions, if we’re mindful. But most of us let our actions control us. We let worry control us; we let the news control us; we let fake news control us; we let stories control us. We let energies that may be untrue control us.” “We have to have the ability to generate joy and to be in touch with simple happiness and, even in moments of bitterness and difficulty, to come back to the present moment and ask the question, ‘What am I grateful for? What things surrounding me can I devote myself to, because I’m grateful for them?'” “Thay always reminded us to take joy and happiness seriously, and, in our modern times, people who come to Buddhism and spirituality, in particular, become allergic to the words ‘happiness' and ‘love' and ‘smiles' because they're not celebrated enough in the world. Because it looks too hippie-dippie. They seem too easy, in a way. But knowing that joy is always accessible is enlightenment, is healing, is love.” “Each and every one of us, when we start the journey of practice, really have to take seriously how to generate joy every day, with no exceptions. Don’t take it for granted.” “Compassion is the foundation for not burning out, for not becoming hateful, for not becoming toxic. It is the foundation of understanding and love.” “When you don’t have enough joy, lean into other people’s joy. You’re not alone.” “The whole purpose of mindfulness is to more deeply understand ourselves, and then to more deeply understand how we relate to the world.” “When you know how to listen, you’re already a teacher in the dharma – not through your spoken words, but through your way of just being. So don’t underestimate the practice of deep listening, because that can open the doors to people’s hearts as well as allowing them to touch healing. Because deep listening allows us to be vulnerable; it allows us to cry the tears that need to be shed to water our fields of pain and our seeds of love, understanding, and kindness. That is all deep listening; meditation is deep listening.” “Wherever there is darkness, light is already there, because the two coexists – and wherever there is light, there is darkness.” “Accept despair and let it deeply touch and tenderize your heart. Because that’s what despair can do. Rather than seeing it as “the end of a journey, see it as something we touch deeply and which can begin a new journey.” “There’s something about taking the longer view and recognizing the great arc of time and not becoming so caught up in this moment, as though it’s the only moment. Recognize that life will continue in many forms, and trust in that.” “We have to use both wings of meditation – stopping and looking deeply – in every crisis that we find ourselves in or find ourselves facing.”

Generosity is a miracle. It's not something we do for God—it's something God does in us. Today, John Rinehart (Founder & CEO, Gospel Patrons) unpacks 2 Corinthians 8:1–9, showing how generosity flows from God's grace. From the radical example of the Macedonian church to Paul's charge to “excel in this act of grace”, and finally to Jesus' own generosity—“though he was rich… he became poor”—this message invites us to give ourselves first to the Lord and join His Kingdom work with joy.

Peace often feels elusive in our fast-paced, worry-filled world. In your daily prayer and devotional, we consider how our thoughts can become like a traffic jam of fears about the future, regrets from the past, and anxieties over what feels out of our control. But Isaiah 26:3 offers us a different picture: perfect peace — God’s shalom shalom — a wholeness and calm that transcends chaos. Rachel Wojo, host of Untangling Prayer, reminds us that this peace isn’t found in perfect circumstances but in a steadfast mind fixed on God. When we choose to trust His unchanging character, rather than our shifting situations, we can anchor ourselves in His eternal stability. God is the Rock who never moves, and when our minds remain focused on Him, His peace guards our hearts, even in anxious moments. Perfect peace doesn’t come because life gets easier. It comes because we remember that God is greater than anything threatening our peace. Bible Reading: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” – Isaiah 26:3 If you're looking for more guidance on anchoring your heart in God's faithful promises, Rachel invites you to check out her new prayer journal, Praying the Promises of God: 52 Week Guided Journal at https:promisesprayerjournal.com. You'll find encouragement and space to meditate on the promises that can transform your prayer life. Until next time, remember, God sees you, hears you, and He knows your needs. Key Takeaways Perfect peace is possible in Christ, even when life feels overwhelming. God’s peace is not based on circumstances but on trusting His unchanging nature. Choosing to fix our thoughts on God helps us take anxious thoughts captive. God is the Rock eternal — stable, steady, and always faithful. Let’s Pray Together Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of perfect peace. When my mind races with worry, help me fix my thoughts on You instead of my fears. Remind me that You are my Rock — steady and unchanging when everything around me feels uncertain. Guard my heart and mind today with Your peace that surpasses understanding. I choose to trust You right now, in this moment. In Jesus’ name, Amen. Calls to Action Begin your day by meditating on Isaiah 26:3. When anxiety creeps in, pause and redirect your focus to God’s faithfulness. Share this episode with a friend who needs encouragement in an anxious season. In this eye-opening episode of The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, Dr. Madeline Levine, one of the leading voices in parenting, returns for her second appearance to share vital insights on how anxiety is stunting both children and parents in today's fast-paced world. From hyper-parenting to the pursuit of perfection, Dr. Levine explores the damage done when we allow our own worries to dictate how we parent, urging us to embrace a long-term view on success. With over 45 years of experience in child development, she offers invaluable wisdom on how play, emotional intelligence, and resilience should take precedence over grades and accolades. As she puts it, “Healthy development takes more than high grades,” and “Kids are entitled to a childhood.” Dr. Levine emphasizes the crucial role parents play in fostering autonomy in their children—ultimately creating a sense of security and self-reliance that can only come from a thriving home environment. She champions the idea that enthusiasm, creativity, and a rich sense of purpose in parents are key to raising resilient, well-rounded kids. Parents, she reminds us, are entitled to a life of their own, and when they model a thriving, well-balanced existence, their children are empowered to do the same. This episode is a powerful call to shift our focus from external pressures to what really matters: the health, happiness, and well-being of our families in an uncertain world.
