Mustard Plug is an American ska punk band from Grand Rapids, Michigan, consisting of Dave Kirchgessner (vocals), Brandon Jenison (trumpet), Jim Hofer (trombone), Nate Cohn (drums), Colin Clive (guitar/vocals), and Rick Johnson (bass). Formed in 1991, the band has regularly toured throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, and South America. They have toured with the Warped Tour twice and participated in the Ska Against Racism Tour. As of 2014, the band has released seven studio albums and continues to tour actively. Explaining the band's goal, Jim Hofer said, "We may have some messages in our music, but essentially we just do this because we love it and we want people to lighten up and have fun." Welcome everyone to This Was The Scene, the podcast that takes a look back at the late 90s / early 2000 Nj Jersey Punk scene, I am your host, Mike Doyle. Bigwig is a punk rock band from New Jersey, who formed in 1995. Their original lineup back in the late 90s composed of Josh, John, Dan who was later replaced by Matt and Tom. The line up since then has seen members come and go but the one thing that has stayed consistent is Tom Petta heading up the band. When I first saw these guys play I was floored. They’d take the stage or floor of a legion hall and the place would blow the fuck up. They just brought this raw energy and it everyone in the crowd would give it right back to them. After seeing them live I decided to never step on a stage and play in front of a crowd unless I was going to authentically give it all that I had. Songs like Flavor Ice, Drunken Night, and 1 800 whipped were the soundtrack to my friends and my summer back in 1997. They were one of the few bands back then that showed all of the other bands that Yes it is possible to go on tour and actually make this your life and I thank them for this. After many attempts to coordinate our schedules, I was finally able to get Tom on the phone for this interview and this is what we talk about: Why being scared by a band’s sound was intriguing to him What album made him want to start a band When he broke out on his own to create Bigwig How he got the dreads who did most of the booking to get bigwig out on the road Roger from less than Jake going nuts for them at warped tour If they actually had 2 minivans for touring how they got on Fearless Where unmerry melodies was recorded Why newer bands probably don’t make it how he comes up with songs What’s up with Canada His call with Chris from Propagandhidi And a ton more Before we being, Here are a few things to note: If you are looking to get shirts or apparel printed up for your band or small business then check out my buddy Casey Lee Morgan’s company SSV Printing. They are based out of Bloomingdale NJ. have been printing shirts and apparel for many years. Casey would absolutely love to print for you. Hit him up at casey@ssvprinting.com. Mention this podcast for some extra special love. Side note, he will be printing the shirts for our Lanemeyer reunion show on July 21 at Debonair Music hall in Teaneck NJ. We will be sharing the stage with our buddies Humble Beginnings and Jettison. Pre-sale tickets are currently available for $15 and then $20 at the door. We’ve already sold a ton so make sure you get in on the action before it sells out. Next week I will have some more news about potential vinyl… Thank you again to the people who’ve donated to the podcast. If you’d like to do so just go to thiswasthescene.com and send whatever you’d like. It helps me with the $20/month to keep this thing live. You can find tickets thiswasthescene.com or in the show notes.
Pat and Jahred are talking Winter Olympics and getting lost in garages in this week’s Chubstep. The guys talk new ideas for Olympic winter sports with the help from listeners including snowflake catching, ice box Jenga and exotic animal sled races. Jahred and Elle continue with guys picking up girls using LinkedIn, changing displays to x-rated content at car shows, ‘Rehearsal for Murder’ in the ‘Jeff Goldblum Movie Review’, Polygamy as a way to solve prostitution in ‘Tanzania News’, and a way to make the opening ceremony more relevant for a younger audience.
Atop the peak of one of the foothills of the southern range of the Rockies, on the outskirts of Ciudad Juarez, is a 20 foot concrete cross. The mile hike up the hill to this landmark was a staple for the student and adult leaders on the annual mission trips I lead to this Mexican border city. From this cross, the view of the Rio Grande Valley is incredible with both Juarez and El Paso sprawling across the historic pass. Having made the hike a number of times, one year I stayed at our rental vans along with a couple other adults. The trailhead was in a squatter neighborhood, ramshackle huts of pallets and corrugated metal perched on the hillside. While not a necessarily dangerous neighborhood, we had been advised that unattended vehicles could be the targets of petty theft. In order to discourage any theft or vandalism a few of us waited with the vehicles while the rest of the group hiked to the lookout. The three of us, all grown men, well past our athletic prime, took out a soccer ball and kicked it around as we waited. Within minutes children and teens began emerging from the shade of the surrounding homes. Before long we had a full fledged soccer game going on the gravel open space. After we played enough to work up a sweat we opened our cooler of FlaVor-Ice frozen treats. We passed them out by the handfuls and between our broken Spanish and the children’s limited English exchanged names, ages, and interests. When the hikers returned, we said our goodbyes, loaded into our vans, and headed back to base leaving the soccer ball. This is the closest experience I think that I’ve had to that of Jesus and the disciples, with people streaming out to see them. I don’t necessarily think that the church is meant to mirror this specific aspect of Jesus’ ministry. I don’t think drawing crowds, for the sake of drawing crowds is central to the Gospel. But I think moments like this reveal something about Jesus and human existence. People flocked to Jesus because he possessed and shared a hope that people were desperate to experience. Sure, some of those in the crowd were only there because they wanted to see what the crowd was doing, and some where there because they were critical of what Jesus was doing. But, on the whole, people sought out Jesus because they hoped Jesus would positively affect their lives. The question for us as Jesus followers and as the church; do we possess and share a hope that people are desperate to experience?
This week on Episode 65 of Bobby Pickles' Podcast (Dying Scene Radio #10), Bob Noxious interviews Joe Queer, guitarist and lead singer of the legendary American punk rock band The Queers on their co-headlining ticket with The Dwarves atBackBooth in Orlando, FL. And Bobby Pickles slurs through his end of this week’s podcast drunk on whiskey. Dwarves’ frontman Blag Dahlia denies Noxious’ allegations of conspiracy to expel Bobby Pickles from The Bowery Electric on this two-part series concerning “some obscure dude from New York”. SYNOPSIS OF BANTER: Bobby asks Bob about how he got his start in radio. Bob explains his humble beginnings on a local Pirate Radio Station and growing up the son of a 70's A.M. Radio "Hot Jock" DJ. Bobby declares, “pop-anything sucks”, including but not limited to pop-country and pop-hip-hop and pop-punk; he then continues on with a news story about Blink 182. Bob continues to be amazed that the aforementioned band remains seemingly relevant to the patrons of dyingscene.com and quickly dismisses them. Bob asks Joe Queer why punk rock legends are so much more accessible than the untouchable rock heroes of yesteryear. Joe tells Bob about meeting Joey Ramone and eventually working with him on his solo record. Legendary! (There’s that word again). Later, Blag baba-booeys the interview, asking Joe about "the blow and all that stuff". Bob discusses his deep seething hatred of the "emo/kid/bubblegum/pop" bands who are continually signed to Epitaph, explaining further that the only relevant band still left on the label is Bad Religion (not true, see: Rancid, Pennywise, Millencolin, Propagandhi, The Descendents...and the list goes on and on). Talk turns to all of the different silly names that record labels are naming themselves. Bobby mentions looking forward to seeing Less Than Jake in New Haven, then gloats that there are no Florida dates for Bob to catch. Bob informs Bobby that LTJ's frontman,Chris DeMakes, lives in the same Florida city as he, continuing that they play roughly eight local shows per year. Bobby, once again, invites Bob to New York for a yearly shindig, then accuses him of being “too pushy” when Bob suggests an interview request with NJ hardcore band,Bigwig. Passive-aggressive puns are passed around playfully as Bob chastises Bobby for a slow news week at DyingScene.com when his supposed “jouralist” co-host covers a story about "some dude’s record collection" - Bobby waxing on about Minor Threat’sFiller EP. THIS WEEK’S HEADLINESSome of the topics reported herein, include, but are not limited to the following:Keep the Manspeaker Family together - Green Jellÿ frontman, and loving father, Bill Manspeaker starts a GoFundMe campaign to raise $5000 to retain a lawyer for his embattled court proceedings, attempting to remove custody rights from his daughter;Contest: Sweet Baby “It’s A Girl” LP reissue, new Sweet Baby 7-inch & more; Video: “The Making of Fat Mike’s Punk Rock Musical” (Part 2); more Matt Skiba and Blink 182news (Bob yawns); The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die sign to Epitaph Records; Mest announces reunion with classic lineup; Less Than Jake announce more US/Canada dates with Reel Big Fish; Live Video: Bigwig perform “Flavor Ice” at Natefest; Watch Scott Helland (Deep Wound, Outpatients) gush about record collection.
