Break out your skate deck and board shorts but this week on the podcast we are reminiscing about skateboard culture with Vanessa and Jonah's old friend, Jim Adkins from Jimmy Eat World. From being too afraid to drop in on half pipes to the Bones Brigade and hoverboard rumors, we reminisce about what it was like to try to pull off tricks before the existence of YouTube. Plus, Jonah and Jim talk about the time Jonah traveled to Europe two decades ago to write a feature on the band during their first U.K. tour, Vanessa recalls her own run-ins with the celebrated rock band and we get the scoop on how much control Jimmy Eat World had for the video for "Lucky Denver Mint," which essentially served as the trailer for the 1999 film "Never Been Kissed." (Spoiler alert: The band didn't have any.) Finally, we play a round of change.dork where we discuss why the Florida Panthers should most definitely keep "Sweetness" as their goal song. #SaveSweetnessSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Interview by Kris PetersAs far as tours go this one is a ripper. Not only do Australian fans get My Chemical Romance for a run of shows this March, but they also get the added bonus of Jimmy Eat World as part of the package. After being only days away from touring just as the world shut down because of COVID - so close that the band's gear was actually en-route to Australia - Jimmy Eat World return for the first time in 6 years with a whole bunch of new material and a renewed vigour.Lead vocalist and guitarist Jim Adkins joined HEAVY to discuss the tour."We were three days away from coming to Australia right before COVID shut everything down," he smiled. "So, our gear got a round trip ticket to Australia and back, but we never made it (laughs). We were particularly sad about that because we were really looking forward to playing. Australia's one of my favourite places to go, it's one of my favourite places to play and on top of everything else that happened that was hard. To be so close to coming over and playing... Then you know what happened after that! There's a lot of pent up energy we've got to get rid of and fulfil our two year mission finally."Jimmy Eat World were hand picked for this tour by My Chemical Romance, which poses the question of just what Adkins and the band have over the headliners."If I told you then they could kick us off and put on someone that they really wanted to have," he laughed. "It wouldn't work if I told you what we have on them..."In the full interview, Jim talks more about being invited on tour, what to expect, what has changed with the band and their live show since they were here last, maintaining your fan base, finding inspiration during the COVID period, the birth of Jimmy Eat World, his early vision for the band and how it has changed since, growing as a band and more.

Market on close you say? It's satirical & totally made up. 100% my comedic opinion based on (fictional lawyer) lies.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two old friends whose bands started around the same time, and who've had very different albums hit the 20-year-mark recently: Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World and Davey von Bohlen of the Promise Ring. I had the idea to pair these guys after seeing a bunch of “best of emo” lists floating around the internet ether lately, and it reminded me of the heady days of the late ‘90s and early 2000s, and how many fond memories I have of those times. I saw the Promise Ring and Jimmy Eat World plenty of times back then; full disclosure: I was then and am now friends with the guys in the Promise Ring. It occurred to me that while the two bands had been on similar trajectories back then, that they diverged right around 20 years ago in a really interesting way. I figured it'd be fun to reconnect them and see what they had to say about it. The Promise Ring were at the top of the emo heap in the late 1990s, though everybody hated that word with a passion back then. They were early fans of Jimmy Eat World's music, and the bands toured together a few times over the years. By the end of the century, The Promise Ring had hit a weird rough patch: Von Bohlen had surgery for a brain tumor, and the band was naturally forced to slow down considerably. When they returned with their much anticipated fourth album, Wood/Water, it represented what felt at the time like a pretty intense left turn: The songs were slower and more melodic—not necessarily what fans were expecting, though the album has gotten a rightful reappraisal in the 20 years since its release. The Promise Ring split up soon after its release, and Davey went on to form the band Maritime with Promise Ring drummer Dan Didier, and they released a string of great records. Jimmy Eat World also found themselves at a crossroads 20 years ago; having parted company with a major label, they self-funded a new album. That album, 2001's Bleed American, spawned a leftfield hit for the band, a song called “The Middle.” It launched Jimmy Eat World into the mainstream before they knew what hit them, and it's one of those songs that to this day you might hear on the radio. It was a blip, of course, in a consistently fantastic career: Jimmy Eat World kept making records and touring—their latest is 2019's Surviving. So it was an interesting point in time for both of these guys, who as you'll hear remain fast friends after all these years. Playing music isn't a huge part of von Bohlen's life anymore, though he does point out that Maritime is technically still a band. These two chat about their 20-ish-year-old records, fatherhood, drinking, touring in the ‘90s, and lots more. Davey tells a great story I hadn't heard before about the Promise Ring's insane pact with each other in their earliest days. Sadly, Jim and Davey never get around to talking about Davey's guest vocals on Bleed American, but maybe we'll just have to have them chat again sometime. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Davey von Bohlen and Jim Adkins for chatting. As a music fan of a certain age, I can be a bit partial to the 1990s, and to that era's emo-rock in particular, so this week's Talkhouse pairing speaks to me: It's Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World and Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional. Jimmy Eat World started life in 1993 in Arizona, pretty much straight out of high school. Before they knew what hit them, they had a major label deal with Capitol and a hearty underground following for their catchy, raw songs. A rollercoaster of a career eventually led to a massive radio hit in 2001: “The Middle”—you know it, believe me—which launched them to new heights but didn't really change the band's fundamentals. They've continued making excellent records since, up to and including 2019's Surviving. One of that album's best songs is the focus of part of today's podcast, too: “555.” Dashboard Confessional, which is the product of singer-songwriter Chris Carrabba, started life a little later in the ‘90s, but also with a bang. His heart-on-sleeve lyrics almost immediately inspired sold-out shows and tear-stained singalongs. In other words, the “emo” tag actually makes some sense for once. The pandemic cut short Carrabba's touring look back at 20 years of Dashboard Confessional, but it allowed him to finish a brand new album called All the Truth That I Can Tell. Now Carrabba and Adkins aren't just here because they're pals and they come from similar backgrounds. They're also bringing their bands together through March on a co-headlining tour dubbed “Surviving The Truth" and then both bands will be part of the When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas in October. All the dates can be found on either band's website, naturally. Adkins and Carrabba chat a lot about songwriting here, specifically about techniques for letting a song find itself. They also ponder whether it's better to have a big radio hit, like Jimmy Eat World did, or to be associated with a huge Spider-Man movie, as Dashboard Confessional was. And both seem delighted, even after all this time, to be able to make music their living. Enjoy. He has been playing and entertaining crowds for fifty years and is a well-known figure in the Atlanta and N. Georgia area. Sit back, relax, and enjoy my conversation with this one-of-a-kind bluegrass personality. The segue music you hear at the start of the interview is Jim Adkins and Cedar Hill kicking off "Runaway" on their 1984 album "Mama Don't Allow". We're almost through ARGENTOBER (and this edition of HARD PIVOT) and today we're discussing the 1971 Giallo (and possibly dark comedy?) FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET! A movie whose rights are so complex you can only watch it on Plex. Not to mention it goes in and out of English dub to Italian in the last 10 minutes. Whatever, still watchable! We discuss the shoehorned title into the reveal of the movie, grown men yelling "I don't want a bath!" and how Fran Lebowitz claims she's never seen a worse movie (c'mon, Fran!). We also ponder if the Coen Bros were inspired by Argento, is our protagonist like Phil Collins? and subconsciously is this movie a HUGE influence on Geoff's sense of humor? On this episode, we discuss the current state of affairs for banks considering the effects of the pandemic and the fast-approaching presidential election. We focus on a few key areas. First, what is happening in the economy and how that is impacting banks. Second, how banks can embark upon the strategic planning process amid all these challenges and third implementing that plan. Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World
This week's podcast features Jim Adkins - lead singer and lead guitarist for Jimmy Eat World. The band has been together since 1993 and has released nine albums, and they have always been based in Arizona. Jim covers a wide range of topics: his definition of success and failure the evolution of gratitude especially with the smaller things in life (and on the road) utilizing outside perspective to help shape your work and art the difference between playing with the band a going on a solo tour and so much more...
When I interviewed Jim Adkins in September 2015, it was a pretty big milestone. I set out with a list of a bunch of people I really wanted to interview and I've made a pretty big dent on that list, and there's more to come.Given how much I love Jimmy Eat World, I was more than keen to have a chat with Tom when the band came into Glasgow recently. So I guess I can tick another off that goddamn list.In my interview with Jim I spoke about how seeing the music video for ‘The Middle' on MTV2 was a pretty big deal for me. It opened my eyes to a whole new musical world. As a punk kind, connecting with something so tuneful, melodic and emotionally upbeat was met with a healthy degree of trepidation. But I rolled with it. Bleed American is a great record for sure, and it still holds a huge place in my heart. However, my journey into Jimmy Eat World's discography did not start with Bleed American. Sure, it's an important album for me, but as was somewhat customary in the days before YouTube, poor working class teenagers took to file sharing programs in order to find music from bands they liked. Sometimes you heard a song on the radio. Sometimes on a music channel. Or sometimes you read about it in a music magazine. But no matter how you came into contact with it, inevitably it was downloaded and stored some on your computer.I used to make mix CDs of my favourite songs and listen to them on my discman. I'd say it was a simpler time, but when it comes down to it, it was a lot of faff for not a lot of music. In among the deluge of JEW songs I acquired during my initial spurt of piracy, I came across ‘Blister'. Given my general ignorance at the time, my first impression was that I was listening to a different band. As it turns out, I wasn't.That song is what made me fall in love with Jimmy Eat World. I haven't looked back since.Getting the chance to talk with Tom was great. As you can tell from the interview he's a pretty thoughtful dude. The interview is quite good humoured, and he's an absolutely lovely guy too.Featured MusicIntro: David Szesztay – CombatMusic Bed: Lobo Loco - Turtle ParadeOutro: Blue Dot Sessions - InessentialI make no claim to the copyright of any of the music in this episode. Listen to Jim discuss heritage poultry and breeding in episodes 13 and 14. GPI has a vision to "educate, equip, and empower indigenous people with character, knowledge, and skills to breed, grow, and market poultry that are sustainable, productive, and profitable." I am continually surprised that none of the people that I've met whose art has affected my life in significant ways are unpleasant. I always seem to expect some kind of aloof quality in the people I meet whose work has impacted me. It's always wonderful to realise that they are just human like you or I. We put such people on a pedestal; they become more than human because they possess a skill which is unique. So far, everyone I've met has been lovely.Don't tell me that you're not the same.Art which we find monumentally influential affects us for personal reasons. Our heroes become legend to us because their creative output has an ineffable quality which transcends speech, it speaks to us deeply, intimately, profoundly. Sometimes it only resonates with you at a specific point in your life, and as you grow older the influence fades. Some of these influences change into nostalgia. Some are timeless. Vinnie Caruana, like Jim Adkins, Dan Andriano, Ian MacKaye and others before him, sit in that timeless category for me.This is discussed in the podcast, but ‘Forty Hour Train Back to Penn' was a seminal record for me. As someone who had grown up thinking that pop punk was just The Offspring, Green Day and the like, and had subsequently developed an aversion to pop punk after listening to Rise Against, The Movielife seemed like the perfect bridge between those two punk worlds - more aggressive pop punk, which had more emphasis on the punk than the pop.And that's what I think nails the singular genius of Vinnie Caruana and Brandon Reilly. Their talent lies on taking a lot of that punk rock edge and adding some layers of melody and hookiness to it. That in itself is not a new thing, or even a unique thing, but their songwriting style is vastly different to anyone else's. It doesn't feel like it's aping mid 90s pop punk, it feels like a more melodic version of bands like Lifetime or Kid Dynamite, but it still has lashings of influence from great pop songwriters . It's easy to see why Drive-Thru records found them appealing, but to me it always felt like they didn't quite belong there. Then there's the evolution. Vinnie's style changes and matures a lot as his career continues. I am the Avalanche leans much more toward melodic hardcore territory than The Movielife ever did. Peace'd Out is more straight up hardcore and their EP is still a favourite of mine. His solo stuff hews closer to pop more than anything, with many songs on Survivor's Guilt skewing more power pop than anything else, but it still has that unmistakable, undeniable Vinnie Caurana songcraft.I loved talking to this guy. So humble and thankful for what he's been allowed to do, and he seemed like a genuinely happy dude.I hope you enjoy the interview. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. The old adage boldly states that you should never meet your heroes, and I guess that's said by people who've experienced meeting their heroes and being bitterly disappointed by it. I can gladly say that with Jim Adkins, that's not the case.I first saw the video for 'The Middle' on Kerrang! TV way back in 2001. I didn't have satellite or cable TV at the time because my family weren't particularly well off, and I think I came across it when I was at the house of my then girlfriend. I was 16 years old.I've carried Jimmy Eat World around with me ever since. Bleed American is an important album for me, it demonstrates a grasp of pop sensibilities that never felt like a compromise, that always felt natural and heartfelt. So meeting Jim was one of the most daunting things I have ever done. He is one of the nicest guys I've ever met and so incredibly grounded despite the huge success Jimmy Eat World have had.As we grow older a lot of the music we used to like loses its shine, your tastes change and things fall away (I think I still have a couple of Korn and Marilyn Manson albums kicking around back at my mum's house, and I think that says it all really). For my particular tastes, punk has always been the exception to that rule.Jimmy Eat World are not, of course, a punk band. Yet there's always been something about the honesty of their music which resonates with me even as I grow older. In my opinion their music has a timeless quality which goes beyond genres or trends.Jim talks about it briefly in the interview, and I think he's right when he says that if you create honest music you'll create an honest connection with people that sticks. And that, I think, just about sums up my feelings on Jimmy Eat World's music.Highlights include:Jim opened himself up to the possibility of doing anything this year and it turned out to be a solo recordThat doing it on his own is a somewhat terrifying but its good when it's doneBeing a musician and a music fan came at the same time for himHe's only recently come to the realisation that being a musician is what he doesHis drive to keep writing is the desire to keep challenging himselfHaving to keep the songwriting muscles active or you risk losing your edgeIt's okay to write something crappyYou never know where an idea is going to land, you might cannibalise it later for another thingAdversity teaches you something, self-growth is almost like inspiration but not all art has to come from painSongwriting fills a void nothing else doesNone of the band had any idea they'd last as long as they did and it just kinda turned into something successfulIf you're honest with yourself about your interests, people will get it and come along for the ride with youIf you're honest with yourself about what you find rewarding then people will have an honest connection with you that sticksMe being starstruck with JimAnd Jim being starstruck with seeing HeartJim still gets excited to see where the set goesThe single series was brought about almost as an experimentIt's a lot these days to ask people to check out an albumThe music industry has changed – some avenues are seen as exposure and others and viewed as money making schemesThe solo stuff is inspired by the 50s/60s songwriting construction – more concise songsJim's solo stuff is cracking and I urge you to check it out. It gives you a totally different insight into his musical abilities and there's something really refreshing about the way he delivers his version of 50s and 60s style pop. It's not trite or cliche, it's just honest and concise. A trait many artists would do well to recognise.I hope you enjoy this interview and I apologise for my nerves. Ok yo, we are back! This episode we were tired and sick, but we needed to get this out! Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World acoustic shows, Taking Back Sunday tour, Marvels Daredevil on Netflix and more!
This is it, my number one guest that I had written down close to three years ago when I started this podcast was the vocalist/guitarist from one of my favorite bands of all time, Jimmy Eat World. Jim and I spent over an our on the phone discussing many things including subverting expectations, stability and never having a "plan" for the band. I feel like we got to some places that most interviews with Jim don't necessarily get to so I hope you enjoy. THIS IS OUR FUNDRAISING MONTH. After meeting Eric Richter from Christie Front Drive through a friend in the early 2000s, I got to ask all the questions I had pent up since high school about the early days of Christie Front Drive touring and connecting with the likes of Mineral, Boys Life and Jimmy Eat World. I was always intrigued about that connection with Jimmy Eat World and after interviewing Jim Adkins for the podcast, I couldn't wait to get them both in a room. Schedules aligned this year and almost instinctively I stepped out of the way on this one. No need for questions when two friends get in the room. In this episode, you will hear Eric and Jim discuss how they did their first 7" together, the Capitol Records years for Jimmy Eat World and plenty of stories from the road. To be able to put this together and hear Eric and Jim wax poetic on the early days of their bands was a dream come true and a first for the podcast. In this episode Jim from Jimmy Eat World calls in to talk about the band's current tour, recording and releasing their latest album, and the mindset behind why the band tries to write for themselves -- not critics.
The FULL Jim Adkins/Jimmy Eat World interview, with Frank Jenks. Greatness.
Twenty one episodes in and I'm finally legal. What better way to celebrate adulthood of the podcast than by having one of my favorite musicians Jim Adkins from Jimmy Eat World to chat with me. Jim and I discussed his first time singing live and what it accomplished to the audience of one, the first goal of the band and his take on how the band has had such longevity in the scene. There is so much in this episode that I think every fan new and old will find something interesting. From Jim's love for Guided by Voices, back story on the new album and a couple outtakes at the end you will surely not want to miss. I am beyond grateful for those that helped make this happen and Jim for taking the time to chat. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
