ROI’s Into the Corner Office Podcast: Powerhouse Middle Market CEOs Telling it Real—Unexpected Career Conversations

Ken has been the President and CEO of America's Thrift Stores since November of 2013 when he stepped off of the board to assume this role. He spent his first 4 years building the team (21 of ATS's Top 25 leaders came from outside) putting in scalable systems and processes (Net Suite, Dundas BI tool, Day Force HCMS, Speed Rail Processing system), improving operations and cleaning up the balance sheet. All to prepare for accelerating growth.  Today, America's Thrift Stores (ATS) is America's premier thrift retailer in the Southeast, with 24 stores on track to deliver over $80 million in revenue and $10 million of sustaining EBIDTA in 2021 at a 66% gross margin and $12 million EBITDA run rate.  In the last 24 months, during the pandemic, ATS has added 7 new stores to its base of 17. Prior to the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, ATS's business was already incredibly healthy, growing total topline sales for 12 straight quarters and same-store sales for 11 straight quarters.  Reopening in June 2020, ATS emerged equally strong, with 4 back-to-back quarters of comp store sales growth, including a historic Q1 where both comp-store sales and Total Sales hit record-breaking levels. Sustaining EBITDA is expected to be over $14 million in 2022 and will more than double over the next 5 years as the company continues to grow comp store sales, opens 3-5 new stores annually, and enters the rapidly accelerating online thrift space.  Prior to joining America's Thrift Stores, Ken was a mentor, advisor, and coach to small and mid-size company CEOs as an Operating Partner with Alpine Investors LLC stretching across industries from Online Education to Online Retail Lighting & Design to Retail Furniture to Used Cars to Retail Thrift.  In this role, he coached CEOs and their leadership teams on helping them build and drive their growth strategies and sales & marketing execution. He also stepped into interim leadership roles and helped with sourcing and due diligence on potential new acquisition candidates.  Ken Sobaski has been a visionary, strategic President & CEO with a history of significantly accelerating growth and inspiring teamwork on businesses across multiple different industries: consumer food, online e-commerce, recreational products, and giftware. He has over 30 years of experience at blue chip marketing-driven companies like Kraft, General Mills, Pillsbury, Polaris, and Capella Education Company, where he grew brands like Orville Redenbacher, Green Giant, Wheaties, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, and Polaris.  Ken's distinction is his ability to lead his teams to achieve significant levels of growth not reached before. Here are a few examples: At Pillsbury, he took a $600mm refrigerated baked goods business that was flat or declining for 5 years and added $120mm in revenue in year 1, and built a pipeline of new products that grew $270mm of incremental revenue over 3 years At Green Giant he successfully launched Create-a-Meal, a $150mm new frozen vegetable meal starter business, achieving record shares in frozen vegetables, moving to #1 position in the category in 12 months On Orville Redenbacher, he reversed 49-months of declines with 12 months of double-digit volume gains. At Polaris, he grew revenue +34% in just over 3 years by focusing/improving marketing execution and upgrading the dealer network At Capella Education Company (an online consumer education company) he took growth from +15% per year to +25% per year, adding $120mm in revenue in under 3 years Ken has served on the boards of The Minnesota Diabetes Association, The Twin Cities United Way, and The Council on Aging – Orange County.  Ken holds a BA in Economics & Urban Studies from St. Olaf College and an MBA in Marketing & Strategy from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University

Episode Notes S6E9 -- Join us as we sit down with the one and only Rico Anderson. He'll be in the house telling tales from S.W.A.T to Get Gone and beyond. As an award winning actor, a sci fi nerd, the oldest of 11 children on his mothers side (6 biological / 5 adopted) and the 3rd of 4 children on his fathers side, Rico was born in Seaside/Monterey, CA and raised on the south side of Chicago as well as the San Francisco Bay Area. It was in Chicago where Rico's love for the arts began. As a little boy, his 3rd grade class went to a touring performance of The Wiz, starring Stephanie Mills. Even at that early age, Rico sat there mesmerized and amazed at the performances. Memories from that performance stuck in the back of his mind and would not surface until a few years later when his family moved to Berkeley, California. The bug bit again and Rico started performing in several plays and Independent films. Rico also majored in Theatre Arts at San Francisco State University. Eventually, Rico moved to Los Angeles and has been blessed to have many film, television, voice over and theatre credits to his name. Food and Travel Nation with Elizabeth Dougherty KRAFT HEINZ SUED OVER ARTIFICIAL CITRIC ACID The TRUTH about Food and Travel Original Broadcast Date:  09/12/2020 A federal judge has ruled that a class-action lawsuit against Kraft Heinz CAN move forward. The plaintiffs allege that the company misled consumers by claiming their Kraft Macaroni and Cheese contains NO artificial preservatives. Scientists agreed with the plaintiffs, and the judge agreed, that Kraft Mac and Cheese DOES indeed contain synthetic citric acid and sodium phosphates, (which act as preservatives) in direct conflict with the company's claims. Kraft Heinz denies the allegations, but the court found enough evidence for the case to move forward. From the Food Travel USA archives dated September 12th 2020, Elizabeth explained WHAT Synthetic Citric Acid IS, the process used to make it, and how the corrupt FDA allowed this garbage into the food supply. While the country was focused on lockdowns, masks and Covid 19, food processing companies were busy inserting the cheaper artificial versions of Citric Acid into their products. Now, Elizabeth's words are proving to be true. ### FOOD AND TRAVEL NATION FAST FACTS About the show:  Food And Travel Nation with Elizabeth Dougherty is the fusion of food and travel. It's surprising to learn that the largest food companies in the world were once owned by big tobacco. During the 1980s through the early 2000s, tobacco giants Philip Morris and R.J. Reynolds acquired and operated Kraft, General Foods, and Nabisco, generating billions in revenue from well-known brands like Oreo cookies, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, and Lunchables. When big tobacco controlled these food giants, rates of obesity, diabetes, and other diet-related diseases surged across the West. This has led many to ask: Did big tobacco apply its expertise in making cigarettes more addictive to the engineering of processed foods? Joining us today to explore this question is Dr. Tera Fazzino, Associate Director of the Cofrin Logan Center for Addiction Research and Treatment at the University of Kansas. Her ground-breaking research into “hyper-palatable” foods sheds light on how big tobacco may have spoiled the American food supply. Did big tobacco make food addictive? Kraft Macaroni and … Fava Beans? The Kraft Heinz Co. said it's bringing dairy-free macaroni and cheese to the U.S. for the first time. The company said the new recipe has the same creamy texture and flavor of its beloved 85-year-old original Mac & Cheese but replaces dairy with ingredients like fava bean protein and coconut oil powder. The plant-based Kraft NotMac&Cheese, which will be rolled out to U.S. stores over the next few months, was developed in collaboration with Not Co., a Chicago startup that makes plant-based milk, burgers and other products. Kraft Heinz, which is based in Pittsburgh and Chicago, formed a joint venture with Not Co. last year. The joint venture, called The Kraft Heinz Not Co., has already released non-dairy cheese slices and mayonnaise in the U.S. It plans to add more products and begin international distribution next year. Kraft Heinz began selling vegan macaroni and cheese in Australia in 2021, but this will be the first time it's been sold in the U.S. Kraft Heinz Not Co. CEO Lucho Lopez-May said sales of plant-based macaroni and cheese products are outpacing the overall category. But less than 30% of buyers purchase the products a second time, citing disappointing taste and texture. Lopez-May said Kraft Heinz Not Co. aims to meet consumers' preference for plant-based foods with familiar flavors that don't force them to make drastic changes to their eating habits. Kraft sells more than 1 million boxes of its original Mac & Cheese every day. NotMac&Cheese will be available in white cheddar and original flavors. While it's made from plants, NotMac&Cheese isn't necessarily healthier than the original. When fully prepared with margarine and almond milk, 1 cup of NotMac&Cheese has 450 calories; by comparison, 1 cup of original Mac & Cheese prepared with margarine and 2% milk is 350 calories. The plant-based dry mix is higher in fat and carbohydrates. But it's also lower in cholesterol and has more protein and fiber. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

On today's episode, we're looking at our company's ‘Brands That Matter' recognition program with ‘Fast Company' senior staff editor Jeff Beer. Not only is it about building connections, but also developing culturally relevant messaging, making an impact through social causes, and communicating their mission and values clearly. We also chat about peak marketing nostalgia and, specifically, how Kraft Macaroni & Cheese is re-releasing SpongeBob shapes, which seems like a perfect example of a brand keying into what millennials miss about childhood. ‘Are you ok with being in the shadows?' Bobby Kim, aka Bobby Hundreds, talks about how he started his streetwear brand, The Hundreds, 20 years ago. Every year, there's always a debate about what streetwear is—some people say it's not cool anymore because of elitism and snobbery within subcultures. To get around this, Hundreds says you need young people discovering it for first time, as well as seasoned veterans weighing in, for a brand to have lore and build a legacy. Most streetwear brands are built to be ephemeral, but Hundreds said what helped his company was sticking to its core values: honesty, communication, and being personable. “People never go out of style.” Check out @bobbyhundreds and The Hundreds' Substack ‘Monologue': https://bobbyhundreds.substack.com/p/the-importance-of-diversity-and-representation

But what if, and I’m being totally serious here, what if you could find a really good comic about food? I’m sure there are others, but Kitchen Witch is really good so that’s what we’re going with right now. Good thing we have Steve Orlando here to talk to about The Kitchen Witch. No one cares about clever code. Instead, people want code that works. Code that they can read six months down the line. Today we speak with Johnny Winn, who avoids writing clever code by following a clear vision — “Make it work, then make it beautiful, then if you really, really have to, make it fast.” A Renaissance man, Johnny’s career ranged from cheffing to design before he settled into software engineering. Reflecting his many interests, we spend the first section of the podcast chatting about cooking. Johnny shares his kitchen secrets before seamlessly transitioning into the topic of coding. After touching on why clever code is bad code, we explore the trend of ‘componentizing,’ when your views are taken over by an endless array of components and folders. Like Johanna Larsson, a previous guest, Johnny makes a case for umbrella projects and explains why many of us have been using them incorrectly this whole time. An enemy of dogma, Johnny emphasizes that teams should use what works best for them, and not what conventional wisdom suggests. Following this, we dive into imposing patterns on our architecture bases, how design patterns serve as communication tools, and why tribal knowledge leads to communication issues. Johnny brings his experience to bear and shares how he structures projects while limiting component creation. Near the end of the episode, Johnny talks about how he learned the cardinal sins of coding before leaving us with his final hot take on living a balanced life. So, tune in for a dynamic conversation where Johnny is as likely to share his smoked pork recipe as he is to deliver key coding insights. Key Points From This Episode: Introducing Johnny Winn and why he’s been called a ‘Renaissance man.’ How to cook the perfect steak or burger — don’t share this with anyone. Hear about what Johnny would cook if he needed to impress you. A recipe for the perfect smoked pork shoulder brine. Food wars; we debate what the best meat and sandwiches are. The inter-industry virtue of keeping things simple and why clever code is bad code. Exploring the trend of ‘componentizing’ everything to extreme levels. The case for umbrella projects and why most people are doing it wrong. Ignoring conventional wisdom and favoring approaches that best work for a team. Winging it versus adding too many components and nested file structures. How design patterns function as a way to communicate. Why developing tribal knowledge can lead to communication issues. Johnny’s mission when coding; “Make it work, make it beautiful, make it fast.” The method that Johnny uses to structure a project. Johnny’s advice for avoiding the cardinal sins of coding; write bad code in your side projects. The importance of living a balanced life and spending time with loved ones. HDTV and Home Theater Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 21, 2015 42:43

DIY Automation Controls using Amazon's Dash Buttons Amazon released a new little product a couple months ago, to very little fanfare. The Dash Button is a tiny device that allows you to instantly order a specific product for Amazon Prime delivery. We thought it was a bit of a novelty and didn't see much use for it, but as with just about anything in technology these days, give it time and someone will find a way to repurpose it and put it to better use.   About the Dash Button Each button is about the size of a portable USB drive and, in Amazon's own words, it “...comes with a reusable adhesive and a hook so you can hang, stick, or place it right where you need it. Keep Dash Button handy in the kitchen, bath, laundry, or anywhere you store your favorite products. When you're running low, simply press Dash Button, and Amazon quickly delivers household favorites so you can skip the last-minute trip to the store.” They are currently available in limited quantities to Prime members only.   Each Dash Button costs $4.99. Not bad for the convenience factor. When we first heard about them, we thought it could be pretty neat. Buy a button, tell it what product you want it to order for you, and place it in a convenient location. Do you use a lot of AA batteries for remote controls, kids toys, etc? Place the Dash Button by where you store your batteries and when you're running low, click it and you'll have more on your doorstep in two days. But that's not exactly how it works.   The idea is the same, but the Buttons aren't nearly that configurable. Each Button corresponds to a predetermined product, and includes that product's logo on it. If you find yourself constantly ordering and reordering one of the available products, it could be great for you. If not, the Dash Button may seem useless. That is, unless you find your own unique way to hack the Dash Button to get it to do something else that makes sense for you.   Right now there are 18 Dash Buttons available: Tide Detergent, Bounty Paper Towels, Cottonelle Toilet Paper, Glad Trash Bags, Gillette Razor Blade Refills, SmartWater Water Bottles, Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, Gatorade Sports Drinks, Huggies Diapers, Larabar Nutrition Bars, Izze Sparkling Juices, Wellness Natural Pet Food, Amazon Elements Baby Wipes, Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, Maxwell House Coffee, Olay Skin Care, Gerber Baby Formula, and L'Oreal Youth Skin Care.   Repurposing the Dash Button The whole idea comes from a post at Medium.com by Ted Benson called How I Hacked Amazon's $5 WiFi Button to track Baby Data. Which, we'll admit, sounds a bit creepy, but it isn't. It was a dad's quest to track when and how often his baby woke up at night. You can get the full details if you read the post, but he had tried baby tracker apps, but wasn't satisfied, so he decided to put the Amazon Dash Button to use for just that purpose.   Those familiar with networking know that any devices you connect to your home network must have a unique identifier so your router can tell it apart from all the other devices on your network. This identifier is called a MAC address. The Dash Button is no different. Each one has a Mac address so it can connect to your home Wifi, then connect to Amazon over the Internet to make your product order. That MAC address, and the Dash Button's ability to connect to your home Wifi are the secret to unlocking the device's full potential.   To save battery life, the Dash Button completely shuts off when not in use. This means that when you click the button it has to wake up, connect to your Wifi network, then place the order. So if you can track when it connects to your network, you can get an alert every time the button is pressed. The author decided to monitor his network with a simple python script running on his computer. The source code is available at the post if you want it. But if you're inventive, there are multiple ways to detect a new device joining your network.   Since each Dash button has to have a unique MAC address, you can have as many as you want and detect each one independently when they're pressed. The author went on to enhance his python script to add a line to a google spreadsheet. He was able to use two different Dash Buttons to track two different baby activities at night, without having to turn his phone on, launch the app, track the activity, etc. Just click a Dash Button and you're set. Of course, as he points out, you want to make sure the Dash Button isn't actually associated with an item at Amazon so you don't end up ordering something every time you click it.   But instead of writing a line to a Google spreadsheet, this is where the world becomes your oyster. Yours can do anything you can script to occur from the computer tracking the network for Dash Button activity. If that computer happens to be your automation server, imagine the possibilities. Do you have an automation activity you perform constantly that a single button press would make so much easier when a light switch isn't within reach? Lights on or off from the bedside table. Air Conditioning on or off from the couch? Lights on or off from the car? Music on or off from the patio. Unlimited possibilities.   By now, if you're a DIY automation enthusiast, you've probably come up with at least one or two ideas for the Dash Button. Sure, they're all things you can do from your phone if you wake it up, open the right app, click the right action. Or from a wall switch if you get off your lazy butt and walk over to click it. Or from any of a plethora of other automation interfaces. The point isn't that this a new or novel concept, it's a new or novel way to put a $5 device from Amazon to work for you in creative and unique ways.   If you don't want to do it yourself, there are options for tabletop controllers so you can get the simplicity of single click without having to repurpose a Dash Button. For example, if you've got an Insteon based system, you can pick up the 6-button scene control keypad in black or white for around $100. Not a bad deal. You get 6 buttons instead of having the keep track of 6 different Dash Buttons, but you pay quite a bit more as well. But, on the upside, it'll be an instant addition to your automation system, so there's still programming work to get it to do what you want, but less DIY work to get it into your ecosystem.   If you end up hacking up a Dash Button, we'd love to hear your story. If you've done something similar, hacked a device to automate your home or otherwise enhance your life, we'd love to hear about that too. Our listeners are quite sophisticated and inventive, we'd love to share your successful automation or home theater life hacks with the rest of the listeners.

I still don't know his last name. Gille arrived from Michigan in a small jar with his photograph on the lid. His friend had sent an email to Chapel Dulcinea asking if we'd be willing to launch some of Gille's ashes into the breeze that always blows there. We replied we'd be happy to do it. It seems that Gille's parting wish was for his ashes to be scattered at beautiful and interesting places around the world and Chapel Dulcinea was selected as one of those places. So at sunset on December 13, 2006, Tom Grimes, Brett Feinstein and I became the awkward honor guard that entrusted Gille to the winds from https://wizardacademy.org/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=137 (the western pinnacle) of Dulcinea's diamond foundation. Feinstein rang the big bronze bell as Gille floated northward into forever. How are things with you? Are you ready to begin a new year? This is the time when millions of us pause to look back with regret and forward with hope. As you prepare for 2007, here are some thoughts I hope you'll ponder: It's Always Okay To Begin Again “The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul.” – G.K. Chesterton Pay Attention to the Little Things “It is often said that before you die your life passes before your eyes. It is in fact true. It's called living.” – Terry Pratchett “No trumpets sound when the important decisions of our life are made. Destiny is made known silently.” – Agnes De Mille Know What You Want “I can teach anybody how to get what they want out of life. The problem is that I can't find anybody who can tell me what they want.” – Mark Twain Don't Think You Know It All “The more we live by our intellect, the less we understand the meaning of life.” – Leo Tolstoy “And he goes through life, his mouth open, and his mind closed.” – Oscar Wilde Don't Be A Couch Potato “Literacy is a very hard skill to acquire, and once acquired it brings endless heartache – for the more you read, the more you learn of life's intimidating complexity of confusion. But anyone who can learn to grunt is bright enough to watch TV… which teaches that life is simple, and happy endings come to those whose hearts are in the right place.” – Spider Robinson “If I show up at your house 10 years from now, and find nothing in your living room but Reader's Digests, nothing in your bedroom but the latest Dan Brown novel… I will chase you down to the end of your driveway and back shouting 'Where are the damn books?… Why are you living the mental equivalent of a Kraft Macaroni & Cheese life?'” – Stephen King, to the 2005 graduating class of the University of Maine You're Going To Have Some Bad Days “Life does not have to be perfect to be wonderful.” – Annette Funicello “Life is like a train. It's bearing down on you and guess what? It's going to hit you. So you can either start running when it's far off in the distance, or you can pull up a chair, crack open a beer, and just watch it come.” – Eric Forman, on That 70s Show “My life has been filled with terrible misfortune; most of which never happened.” – Montaigne Have Courage “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than exposure.” – Helen Keller “Those of us who refuse to risk and grow get swallowed up by life.” – Patty Hansen Love Your Job “https://wizardacademy.org/scripts/openExtra.asp?extra=25 (Work is about a search for daily meaning) as well as daily bread, for recognition as well as cash, for astonishment rather than torpor; in short, for a sort of life rather than a Monday through Friday sort of dying.” – Studs Terkel Don't Forget to Have Fun “Do not take life too seriously – you will never get out of it alive.” – Elbert Hubbard “Life is truly a ride. We're all strapped in and no one can stop it…. I think that the most you can hope for at the end of...
