John links up pop-rock band Fall Out Boy, and producer Neal Avron, to talk about their latest studio album ‘So Much (For) Stardust'. Emerging from Chicago's hardcore punk scene in the early 2000's, Fall Out Boy rose to fame with hits including ‘Sugar, We're Goin Down' and 'Thnks fr th Mmrs'. Constantly innovating, their eight studio albums have seen them embrace all sides of music, including R&B, and electro-pop. For their latest record ‘So Much (For) Stardust', they return to their roots, working with producer Neal Avron. Chatting with Patrick and Neal, the conversation covers the band's approach to the early stages of demoing, their collaboration with a full orchestra and some of the best players in the business, and how they divide different writing responsibilities amongst each other. This week, we are reviewing Paramore. Recently the band has enjoyed a resurgence, making headlines for Hayley Williams political statements made at live shows. While Paramore has embraced more dance and pop as of late, they started as a punk rock band, signed by Fall Out Boy label, Fueled By Ramen. The albums we are reviewing are 2007's sophomore record, Riot!, and 2009's Brand New Eyes. While these albums on the whole do not stand the test of time according to our metrics, there are certainly gems here.
Carson and Dawson's streak of not getting any bangers is finally broken this week, and they're joined by Marty from The Callous Daoboys once again to discuss one of the best songs in FOB's discog. Other topics include music video shoots, other Fueled By Ramen bands, and Brendon Urie.
This week Sam and Marcos discuss the cancellation of Bamboozle Fest, the new Bring Me The Horizon single, and lament the loss of Jordan Blake. Plus we interview Awsten Knight from Waterparks and talk about the best Fall Out Boy albums, signing to Fueled By Ramen, Blizzard noises, new album Intellectual Property and more! In the summer of 2003, Punchline headed to Chicago to record their Fueled By Ramen debut full-length Action with up-and-coming producer Sean O'Keefe. These 12 heartfelt and energetic songs would expose the band to a bigger audience than ever before, both through rigorous touring and widespread distribution. While a growing fanbase and a huge hometown release show for the record brought a lot of momentum, the constant self-comparisons to successful peers added crazy amounts of pressure. Coupled with serious issues within the band, Punchline hit a breaking point in early 2005. For the first time ever, the people who lived the Action era talk openly and honestly about the peaks and valleys of this unforgettable time. Waterparks' frontman Awsten Knight chats with us as the band head out on Sad Summer Fest in the US. He tells us about writing the recent singles 'Funeral Grey' and 'Self-Sabotage' and tells us what to expect from the band's upcoming fifth album, including new song 'Brainwashed' and some exciting collaborations. Plus, we talk signing to Fueled By Ramen, their recent show at London's Brixton Academy and the inclusion of 'Telephone' in Netflix's 'Heartstopper' series.
“If anybody has someone in their past that you would still like to maintain some sort of relationship with,” Rory Phillips explains, “but you have some traumatic event that you've never talked about, I highly recommend getting a couple of microphones and talking about it.” Fresh off the breakup of The Impossibles, Philips was pair with Jamie Woolford – himself having recently left fellow ska-punk band, Animal Chin. Following the release of their Fueled By Ramen debut, 300, the band soldier on – without Phillips. This year, the reunited group released the crowdfunded Thirteen. Woolford focused on post-production, while Phillips devoted himself to Kings of No Hope, a podcast focused on The Stereo's story to date. It's an honest – and sometimes difficult -- portrait of breakups, breakdowns and an exploration of a group that never managed to hit the heights of the bands they inspired. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
If you're not familiar with The Stereo, chances are you know many of the acts they've influenced. Founded in 1999, the band released four well-received albums on Fueled By Ramen, toured in Europe and Asia, and sat on the cusp of even bigger and better things. However, The Stereo also experienced more than its fair share of bad luck, unfortunate timing and member turnover before ultimately calling it quits in 2004. Now reunited, The Stereo is back with its first new album in more than 20 years. The band preceded the May 13 release of Thirteen with a five-part companion podcast called "Kings of No Hope" that chronicles the ups, the downs and the reformation of The Stereo. Shortly after the release of both of those things, founding members Rory Phillips and Jamie Woolford spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about the new album, the band's tumultuous backstory and the path back to collaboration. Along the way, Phillips talked about his early bands in Austin as well as his years in The Impossibles and Woolford talked about pre-Stereo experiences with Midwest ska staples, including The Pacers and Animal Chin. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and The Stereo ("Do You / Don't You").

Series Finale The Stereo return to Europe, this time with a completely different line-up. The first trek across the Atlantic had ultimately led to Jamie firing all the other members and rebuilding the band from scratch, and this was a chance to rewrite some of that painful history. Unfortunately, new obstacles would replace the old ones, and the band would find itself coming to terms with unexpected chaos and gut wrenching decisions. Decisions that, despite being designed to shore up the band's foundation, could only delay its inevitable collapse. Hosted, Written and Produced by Rory Phillips Twitter:@RoryATX Instagram:@RoryATX You can find the The Stereo at thestereorock.com and on all major music streaming platforms, including Apple Music and Spotify. This episode features excerpts from interviews with Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy), Andrew Dost (Fun.), Ryan Seaman (I Don't Know How But They Found Me), Scott Heisel (former Managing Editor, Alternative Press), Adam Samiljan (former VP Digital Marketing, Fueled By Ramen), and Vinnie Fiorello (Less Than Jake, Co-founder of Fueled By Ramen).

Plus, we find out what to expect from the new live show, including some reworked classics and cover versions.

From time to time, a new album comes along and becomes so popular that it almost forces itself into the culture whether they like it or not. It's almost like it becomes part of our air supply and no matter where you turn, hearing it, is unavoidable. I know a million and one albums probably come to mind when thinking about it, and this particular album is no different. Some Nights is the second full album offered up by American pop rock group Fun. After freshly landing a new record deal with Fueled By Ramen, the band began the nine-month process of recording "Some Nights". Initially met with critical reception, and mixed reviews but that didn't stop the singles from the album from ending up everywhere. Picked up and covered by the wildly popular television show Glee, "We Are Young" would start a trail of fire that wouldn't fizzle out for quite some time."We Are Young" would then find its way into a brand new Chevrolet commercial that aired for the first time during Super Bowl XLVI, which lead to a level of exposure only a few musical acts ever get to witness for themselves. The song would also be performed at the MTV Movie Awards on June 4, 2012.Not only is "Some Nights" brilliantly written, but it's also brilliantly performed. Lead Singer Nate Ruess very much has become synonymous with the sound that "Fun." has, and the band itself wouldn't be the same without him. Whether or not the type of music they make is "your thing", you simply cannot deny the power that this album wields. At one point, you couldn't turn on your local radio station without hearing three or four songs off of this album."We Are Young" topped the US Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks and Alternative Songs for two weeks, with over six million digital downloads. The title track was commissioned as the second single and has reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, selling 6.8 million digital downloads as well as becoming their second No. 1 on Alternative Songs. The band later would go on to win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and "We Are Young" won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. Fun received four other Grammy nominations: two for "We Are Young" and two for the album itself. To say that this album was a commercial success would be putting it lightly. Join us as we again take a gander at an album many of you may not have ever listened to all the way through, but by the time we're done there is going to be a good chance that you'll want to. In the 90s, there were hundreds of lesser-known ska bands that were amazing. Many of them were better than the bands getting radio and MTV play. On today's episode, we present one of them: The Impossibles from Austin, Texas. A band that seamlessly melded Op Ivy verses with Weezer choruses. Our guest today is Impossibles vocalist/guitarist Rory Phillips. We dig deep into the group's short time in Austin, where Gals Panic were local legends, and DIY spaces like Eco Action Warehouse hosted punk shows. We talk about the group signing to Fueled By Ramen, touring with MU330, and having a cameo in a shelved Goldfinger video. We also talk about Rory's recent collaborations with Barry Johnson of Joyce Manor and his post-Impossibles power-pop band The Stereo that he did with Jamie Woolford of Animal Chin. The Stereo was a group that influenced Dashboard Confessional, Fall Out Boy, Jeff Rosenstock, and New Found Glory, and whose album Three Hundred was named one of the most influential records of 1999 by Alt-Press. Yet, few people remember the band. Fortunately, Rory made a 5-part podcast telling the group's story. It's called "Kings of No Hope," and it's available to download right now. 20 years ago I helped start a band that was going to be the next big thing on a tiny indie record label out of Gainesville, Florida. 10 years later Fueled By Ramen Records had set the music industry on fire, but our band had burned itself out. It was a cautionary tale of bad blood and missed opportunities, but music icons like Jack Antonoff took note of our influence on the scene. Alternative Press said we made one of the 10 most influential records of 1999, and members of incredibly successful, multi-platinum acts like Fall Out Boy and Fun. sang our praises, but most people have never even heard of us. So what happened? This is the story of THE STEREO. New episodes available bi-weekly.
