On this episode of Y'all Listen Here, hosts Barbie Bassett and Therese Apel sit down with Rev. Barbara Taylor of First (Global) United Methodist Church of Richland, to talk about what it really means to lead when God places you in a position of influence. When you're chosen to carry a platform of leadership or accountability, the easy path isn't an option. Rev. Taylor shares heartfelt wisdom on why standing firm in faith—especially when it's uncomfortable or costly—is part of the calling. Together, the three women explore how God equips leaders not just to take the stage, but to carry the weight of responsibility with courage, conviction, and grace. #YallListenHere #Episode36 #CalledToLead #FaithAndLeadership #CourageInLeadership #LeadershipWithGrace #ChurchLeadership #WomenInMinistry #StandFirmInFaith #LeadershipAccountability #ChristianPodcast #MississippiMinistry This episode is produced by Daniel Anderson at Audio Alchemy Productions.

In September 2024, we packed up our vans and drove about four and a half hours from Portland to Richland, WA, to set up a mobile broadcast studio on the campus of Washington State University Tri-Cities. We broadcast a week of shows that included conversations about the WW II and Manhattan Project history that created the radioactive waste from war-time plutonium enrichment at Hanford. Our coverage from the region also included in-depth interviews with Indigenous leaders and a tour of the infamous B-reactor, along with conversations about the economy and culture of the region. We listen back today to two of these conversations. The first is with Carolyn Pearce, a PhD and chemist with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory working on the science of the vitrification, the glassification process that will be used to turn some of the 56 million gallons of radioactive waste into radioactive glass logs for storage. In the second half of the show, we revisit our tour of one part of the the Hanford nuclear reservation. The 56 million gallons of waste are stored in 177 massive, underground tanks on 18 different “farms.” Most of the tanks are single-shelled, but 28 of them are double-shelled, which helps prevent waste from getting into the ground. Karthik Subramanian, chief operating officer of Washington River Protection Solutions, the tank farm operations contractor, was our guide. After the tour, we sat down with Brian Vance, who at that time was the Department of Energy’s top manager in charge of Hanford. He resigned in March of this year. Vance talked with us about tank integrity, the status of the vitrification plant and the overall clean up progress. The opening of that waste processing facility -- which has now cost $30 billion - was thrown into doubt earlier this month, but the Department of Energy is now allowing the project to move forward and the first glass logs are expected to roll out as soon as this week, ahead of the October 15 deadline.

Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin has partnered with the Wisconsin Sports Network to celebrate high school athletes who also work or are involved in dairy farming. “WSN is a perfect partner,” said Jessica Kelley, DFW district director for Richland and Sauk counties. “They have strong roots in local athletics, and by working with them, we’re able to highlight student-athletes who not only work hard on the field or court, but also on the farm.” The “Wisconsin Dairy Athlete of the Month” program highlights students who balance varsity-level sports, academics, and responsibilities on a dairy farm. According to Kelley, it’s about more than recognition. “When we tell real stories about young people helping on the farm, excelling in sports, and committed to their communities, we’re giving people a deeper understanding of where their food comes from," she says.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chris Gheysens is chairman and chief executive officer of Wawa, a chain of more than 1,100 convenience stores in nine states across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions of the U.S. and Washington, D.C. Wawa is a family- and associate-owned, privately held company with more than 45,000 associates serving almost two million customers every day. The company began in New Jersey in the early 1800's as an iron foundry and a cotton and textile mill and moved to Pennsylvania with the opening of a dairy plant in 1902. The original dairy was built in a rural section of Pennsylvania called “Wawa,” which was named by Native Americans to honor a favored game – the Canada goose. As home delivery of dairy declined and supermarkets became more abundant in the early 1960s, the concept to open Wawa convenience stores became a reality with the first in Folsom, Pa., in 1964. Gheysens, who's been with Wawa for more than 27 years, was previously chief financial and administrative officer with responsibility for all financial, legal and human resource functions. Prior to joining Wawa, Gheysens was in the audit practice at Deloitte and Touche, LLP in Philadelphia. A graduate of Saint Augustine Preparatory School in Richland, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from Villanova University School of Business and his Master of Business Administration from Saint Joseph's University. Gheysens is a certified public accountant who was awarded an honorary Doctor of Leadership degree and the Beta Gamma Sigma Business Achievement Award from Saint Joseph's University.
Orson Scott Card (born August 24, 1951) is an American writer known best for his science fiction works. As of 2024, he is the only person to have won a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award in consecutive years, winning both awards for his novel Ender's Game (1985) and its sequel Speaker for the Dead (1986). A feature film adaptation of Ender's Game, which Card coproduced, was released in 2013. Card also wrote the Locus Fantasy Award-winning series The Tales of Alvin Maker (1987–2003). Card's fiction often features characters with exceptional gifts who make difficult choices with high stakes. Card has also written political, religious, and social commentary in his columns and other writing; his opposition to homosexuality has provoked public criticism. Card, who is a great-great-grandson of Brigham Young, was born in Richland, Washington, and grew up in Utah and California. While he was a student at Brigham Young University (BYU), his plays were performed on stage. He served in Brazil as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and headed a community theater for two summers. Card had 27 short stories published between 1978 and 1979, and he won the John W. Campbell Award for best new writer in 1978. He earned a master's degree in English from the University of Utah in 1981 and wrote novels in science fiction, fantasy, nonfiction, and historical fiction genres starting in 1979. Card continued to write prolifically, and he has published over 50 novels and 45 short stories.[1] Card teaches English at Southern Virginia University; he has written two books on creative writing and serves as a judge in the Writers of the Future contest. He has taught many successful writers at his "literary boot camps". He remains a practicing member of the LDS Church. Life Childhood and education Card (right) signing autographs at New York Comic Con in 2008 Orson Scott Card was born on August 24, 1951, in Richland, Washington.[2] He is the son of Peggy Jane (née Park) and Willard Richards Card, and is the third of six children and the older brother of composer and arranger Arlen Card.[3] Card's family has Mormon pioneer heritage. His ancestors include Brigham Young, Charles Ora Card, Zina P. Young Card, Zina Young Card Brown, and Hugh B. Brown.[4] When Card was one month old, his family moved to San Mateo, California, so Willard Card could begin a sign-painting business. When he was three years old, the family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, so his father could finish his bachelor's degree. The family moved to Santa Clara, California, when Card was six; they stayed there for seven years while his father completed his master's degree and worked as a professor at San Jose State College. In school, Card took classes for gifted students, but he was more interested in studying music—he played clarinet and French horn. He read widely, including historical fiction, nonfiction, and literary classics.[5] At age ten, he wrote his first story, which was about an intelligent child who is assaulted by bullies and sustains brain damage. Ender's confrontation with Stilson in Ender's Game is based on this story.[6] In 1964, Card and his family moved to Mesa, Arizona, where he participated in mock debates in junior high school. In 1967, the family moved to Orem, Utah, where his father worked at Brigham Young University (BYU). Card attended BYU's laboratory school, where he took both high school and early college-level classes before graduating in one year. When beginning his college studies he intended to major in archeology, but after becoming increasingly more interested in theater, he began script-writing, writing ten original plays and rewriting other students' plays. Most of his plays were based on Mormon history and scriptures; one was science fiction. By watching the body language of an audience, he could tell when an audience was interested in his scripts.[6][7] During his studies as a theater major, he began doctoring
