What does it really take to keep a small town alive—and help it grow? We sit down with developer and community leader Nathan Burseth to unpack how Colfax, North Dakota, paired housing with heart to attract families, remote workers, and retirees while strengthening its school and tax base. From the first 15 lots to multiple phases in Colfax Meadows, to the shop-friendly Trackside, to the barn dominium-focused Reserve, Nathan shows how choice, covenants, and city services create real momentum without losing the rural feel people love.We dig into the practical playbook: municipal water and sewer on large lots, creative architecture with many builders, and fiber internet that lets Minneapolis or Chicago professionals work from the prairie. Nathan explains how a diversion settlement funded county-wide housing initiatives, reducing risk for builders and banks, and why home rehabilitation is a powerful lever for affordability and neighborhood renewal. Each new household matters; just a few students can change a district's budget, keeping class sizes small and opportunities wide.Community culture ties it together. The Richland 44 Foundation's scholarships—up to $10,000 per graduate—plus a new events venue keep resources flowing to students and teachers, from dual-credit support to classroom tech. Add pheasants at dusk, kids biking to the pool, and a 20-minute interstate drive to Fargo's jobs and concerts, and you have a compelling mix of small-town life with big-city access. If you care about the future of rural America—or you're searching for a home where values and opportunity align—this conversation brings a blueprint you can use. Pacific Northwest National Lab scientist and Hanford manager on radioactive tank waste, vitrification and clean-up progress In September 2024, we packed up our van and drove about four and a half hours from Portland to Richland, WA, to set up a mobile broadcast studio on the campus of Washington State University Tri-Cities, in partnership with Northwest Public Broadcasting. We broadcast a week of shows that included conversations about the WW II and Manhattan Project history that created the radioactive waste from war-time plutonium enrichment at Hanford. Our coverage from the region also included in-depth interviews with Indigenous leaders and a tour of the infamous B-reactor, along with conversations about the economy and culture of the region. We listen back today to two of these conversations. The first is with Carolyn Pearce, a PhD and chemist with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory working on the science of the vitrification, the glassification process that will be used to turn some of the 56 million gallons of radioactive waste into radioactive glass logs for storage. In the second half of the show, we revisit our tour of one part of the Hanford nuclear reservation. The 56 million gallons of waste are stored in 177 massive, underground tanks on 18 different “farms.” Most of the tanks are single-shelled, but 28 of them are double-shelled, which helps prevent waste from getting into the ground. Karthik Subramanian, chief operating officer of Washington River Protection Solutions, the tank farm operations contractor, was our guide. After the tour, we sat down with Brian Vance, who at that time was the Department of Energy’s top manager in charge of Hanford. He resigned in March of this year. Vance talked with us about tank integrity, the status of the vitrification plant and the overall clean up progress. The opening of that waste processing facility -- which has now cost $30 billion - was thrown into doubt earlier this month, but the Department of Energy is now allowing the project to move forward and the first glass logs are expected to roll out as soon as this week, ahead of the October 15 deadline.
Episode 69 of News Man Weekly might just be the most “taxing” one yet. Carl, Zac, and Hayden open with their usual mix of NFL overreactions and weekend chatter before diving deep into a big local debate — the future of the downtown municipal parking lot. Carl unpacks the city’s proposal to sell half the lot to Park National Bank, explains how we got here and explores the pros, cons and public reactions surrounding one of the most talked-about development issues in Mansfield. Then the show welcomes two guests: Source Media Audience Engagement Editor Brittany Schock joins to share updates on upcoming events across Richland, Ashland and Knox counties. Commissioner Tony Vero stops by to discuss the complex property tax decision facing Richland County. It’s an episode full of insight, accountability and community context, best paired with a cup of Relax coffee and a strong opinion on taxes. Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin has partnered with the Wisconsin Sports Network to celebrate high school athletes who also work or are involved in dairy farming. “WSN is a perfect partner,” said Jessica Kelley, DFW district director for Richland and Sauk counties. “They have strong roots in local athletics, and by working with them, we’re able to highlight student-athletes who not only work hard on the field or court, but also on the farm.” The “Wisconsin Dairy Athlete of the Month” program highlights students who balance varsity-level sports, academics, and responsibilities on a dairy farm. According to Kelley, it’s about more than recognition. “When we tell real stories about young people helping on the farm, excelling in sports, and committed to their communities, we’re giving people a deeper understanding of where their food comes from," she says.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We made it to 50! In this milestone episode, Carl Hunnell and the team briefly reflect on nearly a year of News Man Weekly. This episode is a double feature: First, we bid a bittersweet farewell to Ashland Source reporter Mariah Thomas, who’s heading back home after two impactful years of storytelling in north central Ohio. Her dad, Jim, joins the conversation before their 20+ hour drive across the country. Then, we sit down with Bob Ball, Chief Investigator with the Richland County Coroner’s office. He discusses his role with the Coroner's office and enlightens us on Retrospective Fatality Analysis. Learn how his office is using this method to better understand — and ultimately help prevent — deaths by suicide and other unnatural causes. Plus: The long-delayed trial of Bryce Witchey, a major zoning change near Mansfield Lahm Airport and Matt Tifft purchases the Mansfield Speedway. Chris Gheysens is chairman and chief executive officer of Wawa, a chain of more than 1,100 convenience stores in nine states across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions of the U.S. and Washington, D.C. Wawa is a family- and associate-owned, privately held company with more than 45,000 associates serving almost two million customers every day. The company began in New Jersey in the early 1800's as an iron foundry and a cotton and textile mill and moved to Pennsylvania with the opening of a dairy plant in 1902. The original dairy was built in a rural section of Pennsylvania called “Wawa,” which was named by Native Americans to honor a favored game – the Canada goose. As home delivery of dairy declined and supermarkets became more abundant in the early 1960s, the concept to open Wawa convenience stores became a reality with the first in Folsom, Pa., in 1964. Gheysens, who's been with Wawa for more than 27 years, was previously chief financial and administrative officer with responsibility for all financial, legal and human resource functions. Prior to joining Wawa, Gheysens was in the audit practice at Deloitte and Touche, LLP in Philadelphia. A graduate of Saint Augustine Preparatory School in Richland, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from Villanova University School of Business and his Master of Business Administration from Saint Joseph's University. Gheysens is a certified public accountant who was awarded an honorary Doctor of Leadership degree and the Beta Gamma Sigma Business Achievement Award from Saint Joseph's University.
