We've got a special edition of Peach Pundit the Podcast for you. Just before Christmas, I interviewed Tim Redmond, the author of a recent book, Political Tribalism in America: How Hyper-Partisanship Dumbs Down Democracy and How to Fix It. Tim received his PhD from SUNY Buffalo, and he currently teaches in the Buffalo area. He is also the teacher training director for the Academy for Human Rights. And for fans of hardcore, Tim is the drummer for the Buffalo-based Snapcase. While I gather that most of our listening audience aren't huge hardcore and punk rock fans, Snapcase is well known in those circles. I grew up with Progression Through Unlearning and Designs for Automation blaring out of my car stereo or at work. Actually, I still rock out to those two records on a regular basis. Tim and I discuss the state of our politics and how we, as citizens, can educate and inform ourselves to put the United States back on a more stable track. We also talk a little about Snapcase, and their plans in the coming months. Scot, Buzz, and I are recording our first regular episode of 2025 this evening, so be on the lookout for that.

At long last, two of the three buffoons that make up Shit Talk Reviews finally sat down to talk about what will be certainly considered one of the best albums of 2024: And Now I'm Just Gnashing My Teeth from new LA based powerhouse The Barbarians Of California. The album smacks of rock, metal, punk, hardcore, thrash and has a few surprises thrown in here and there just to keep us all on our toes. The band's lineup brings serious pedigree to the table with Eric Stenman on guitar and bass (Tinfed, 35 year studio guru as engineer, producer, mixer and stunt guitarist,) Aaron Bruno (singer of AWOLNATION, Under The Influence Of Giants, Home Town Hero,) Isaac Carpenter (drummer for AWOLNATION, Gosling, Loaded,) and Zach Irons (guitarist for AWOLNATION.) They also brought in Tim McIlrath from Rise Against and Daryl Taberski of Snapcase for guest appearances. While you might immediately assume that with such an AWOLNATION heavy lineup that The Barbarians Of California would be a similar band, you'd be wrong. There are certainly some AWOLNATION seasonings sprinkled on the album, but this record is a definite departure from that. Aaron's vocals are frantic and unhinged while maintaining perfect control, the guitar work by Eric and Zack is groovy, thrashy and pristine and Isaac's drumming is powerful and lays a heavy heartbeat for this new breath that's been pumped into our musical lungs. The band brings serious heavy to this album and it's a fantastically refreshing listen. It covers a bunch of genres, but stays cohesive throughout. It absolutely warrants listening to. You should also check out the interview the Shit Talk guys did with Eric Stenman a few weeks back to get deeper into the band and the album. Be sure to head over to www.shittalkreviews.com for all the other Shit Talk interviews and reviews. I finished The Godfather, and give my final thoughts on the fucker. (You won't have to hear about it again. At least not for a long time. Probably.) I saw that movie “The Apprentice” about young Trump and Roy Cohn. I was lulled in by suggestions that it was “objective” and almost “sympathetic” to the man; spoiler alert: it wasn't. I talk about the Will Haven/Strife show at the Troubador. *Editor's Note: The song I was referring to was “SAIL,” from AWOL Nation. Not “Air,” as I erroneously portended.

The "Doom Loop" of Polarization Political beliefs are often shaped by party affiliations rather than the other way around, contributing to the phenomenon of political tribalism. Individuals align themselves with a particular political party, and in doing so, adopt the party's established set of beliefs and ideologies. This process is not always driven by a deep examination of personal values but rather a desire for belonging and identity within a group. As a result, people may conform to the party's stance on various issues, even if those positions do not entirely align with their individual convictions. This conformity fosters an environment where party loyalty takes precedence over independent thought, leading to a polarized political landscape. The reinforcement of party identity becomes a powerful force, making it challenging for individuals to deviate from the accepted party narrative, ultimately perpetuating the "Doom Loop" of Polarization. Victory Records is a Chicago-based record label founded by Tony Brummel. It operates a music publishing company called "Another Victory, Inc." and is the distributor of several record labels. It has featured many prominent artists including Thursday, Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, Taking Back Sunday, Bayside, Streetlight Manifesto, and A Day to Remember. Some Victory bands I've interviewed include Doug fromThe Sleeping, Andrew from Strife, and Mark from Shutdown. I also interviewed Double J who used to worked for Victory for 10 years as a designer who was basically their art director. In September 2019, years after buying part of the label's catalogue, Concord bought Victory Records and Another Victory for $30 million. Craft Recordings has been managing Victory Record' catalog since Concord acquired the label. Victory has since not signed any new bands or released new records. Instead, the label operates for the current distribution of the label's alumni, as well as for reissues. Victory's catalogue includes 4,500 master recordings and 3,500 compositions through its publisher Another Victory. Monika has been listening to the show for a while and would always message me with random stories about people I've interviewed. I found out she worked for Victory and she said she'd like to tell some stories since no one really wants to talk honestly about the label. I got her on the Skype and this is what we talk about: What could they listen to at the office The cops showing up The Holiday party Did the staff know about the deals bands were getting The Sleeping The Damnation AD showcase Blackberrys 360 deals The soda machine story Freezing checks And a ton more Here are some people I'd like to interview if you have a connection - Greg from Gokart, The Lunachicks, Dan Adriano just about Tuesday, Rainer Maria, Ace from Early November, Steve Evetts, just to name a few. New York hardcore took a positive turn in December, 1994, when Shutdown emerged on the scene as one of few bands ready to take their music and message to the next level. With an emphasis on old-school values and new school musical sensibility, Shutdown were poised to take over where bands like Warzone, Cro-Mags and Gorilla Biscuits left off. With older members of the NYHC crowd supporting these "kids", success has been a natural transition. They have played some of the biggest shows in past hardcore history, including one of the two tributes to Raybeez (Warzone) at CBGB's in the fall of 1997. Raybeez himself actually went as far as to state that Shutdown is "the future of hardcore". Shutdown stopped playing full-time shortly after finishing a quick stint on Warped Tour in 2001. In 2006, Black & Blue invited Shutdown to play the NYC Superbowl of Hardcore which stands as the biggest hardcore show in NYC every year. In 2010, Shutdown announced its rebirth back to playing and doing random shows a few times per year. I state in the interview that Monkey helped me find the band but it was actually Brian Schatzel who helped connect me. So thank you Brian and I apologize for always saying Monkey introduced me to everyone even though he was done it a lot. I got Mark on the Skype and this is what we chat about: His thoughts on the current hardcore scene Andy from Kill Your Idols His brothers introducing him to hardcore Rick 2 Life The home promo video he sent Tony from Victory Signing with Victory California Takeover Why The band suddenly stopped Bands not liking them Working on a new record The Harley story And a ton more This week's sponsor is Mint 400 Records. Before we start, if you're company has a hard time explaining what it does you can hire me to do that in 60-90 seconds with an explainer animation. Go to drive80.com or email me at mike@drive80.com to learn more. Strife formed in 1991 signing on with Caroline Records, who issued their debut album, One Truth, in 1994, before signing on with one of the country's leading hardcore labels, Victory. In 97 they issued In This Defiance, a recording on which the band attempted to broaden their sound, as it featured guest spots from members of such acclaimed non-hardcore acts as Fear Factory, Sepultura, and the Deftones. But just when it seemed things were going good for the band, Strife announced their disbandment in early 1998. Sporadic reunion concerts followed (as well as a collection of odds and ends, 1999's Truth Through Defiance, and almost exactly two years later, Strife decided to reform. In 2001, Strife issued their third studio album, Angermeans, which was followed up by their first major tour in nearly four years.
