May is Foster Care Month, and we're kicking it off with an incredible conversation with Billie Jo Muckley. Billie Jo has been a foster mom for over 21 years. In this episode, she shares the heart behind her long journey in foster care and how her faith in God gives her the strength to keep going, even when things get hard. Billie Jo also opens up about how she and her husband stay strong as a couple while navigating the challenges of foster parenting. She reminds us that foster care is something we can all be a part of—whether we're fostering, supporting a foster family, or just showing up with love. When we step out in faith to care for those who are hurting, we're doing it in Jesus' name—and that's always worth it.Episode Highlights: Meet Billie Jo! Guest: Vicki Pyne Program Director CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), they work with children court cases that deal with neglect and abuse. CASA volunteers are the voice for the children in the court room, they help children from ages 0-18. CASA in Jefferson County also has a program that helps provide housing for kids who have been emancipated from foster care, the children in this program range from 18-26. April is Child Abuse Prevention month and May is Foster Care Month, which helps raise community awareness for the work CASA is doing. They are looking for volunteers 21 and older. The ideal CASA volunteer is able to work independently and be able to look at a case and child/children and create a plan for what the child needs. A volunteer needs to be able to set boundaries and still have compassion. Coming up on May 7th, CASA host a Champion of Children’s breakfast. https://www.casajeffcogilpin.com/

There are over 4,000 foster children living in Connecticut. May is Foster Care Month. From what's seen on TV and the media, foster care looks like a selfless, philanthropic act; willing foster parents open up their homes to children in need. But being a foster parent is a complicated job that requires many layers of kindness and sensitivity. Laura is a foster parent based out of California. She received a lot of attention sharing a video about her experience as a foster mom and continues to share her experience and advice on social media. The topics range from navigating relationships between foster parents and biological parents, to preparing your home before you become a foster parent. We talk about this complex system involving caretakers, lawmakers, and of course, the children placed in the state's care. If you have direct experience with the foster care, we want to hear from you. GUESTS: Laura: a foster parent in California and she manages Foster Parent Partner Commissioner Vannessa Dorantes: Connecticut Department of Children and Families Josiah Brown: Executive Director of Connecticut CASA, a statewide network of volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates who work to advance the best interests of children Tricia Goldburn: Court Appointed Special Advocate, Connecticut CASA Support the show: http://wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“I could never do foster care because I’d get too attached.” I get it. Without a doubt, I hear you. And... yes, yes you would. What we shouldn’t do though, is let our fear of becoming attached keep us from diving in head first. What we should do is let our fear of these babies and children not having attachment propel us.Not everyone is called to open their home, but if you are and you are letting fear keep you from moving forward, just take another step. I promise, you won’t regret it.
