As Chris & Sammy look forward to May, which is Foster Care Awareness month, they share the number of children and youth in foster care in the United States today. As they reflect on this statistic, they share their thoughts and views on foster care. In this episode, find out what surprises Chris most about the statistic shared and how he and Sammy first were introduced to foster care. Hear how Chris and his team view every child and family they serve and the three buckets they use to determine how to best serve them, how when we learn stories of those separated from, when we see them as children of God, often deeply wounded, it changes how we approach foster care and every single person within it. At Bethlehem, we are committed to a lifestyle of serving people and inspiring others to do the same. God's heart is with the vulnerable and Scripture commands us to look after them. “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.” James 1:27. Because of this, at Bethlehem we have a heart for children within the foster care system and the families that choose to dedicate their lives to caring for them. With us today are people who do just that. Pastor Joseph Brown, our Community Pastor on staff and also a Foster Parent, and members and foster families at Bethlehem... Molly Hughes, and Jessica and Tyler Evans.

Many foster carers and social workers have worked with youth whose stories mirror that of Ma'Khia Bryant. Her life was important. She was special. We hope we can honor her and those like her. We are lucky enough to be joined by Amnoni Meyers, Resource Family Training Specialist, who was gracious enough to share the parallels between Ma'Khia's story and her own. Who she was and what she experienced are important, and connects back to three key points for all youth in care: 1. Can they name at least one adult with whom they feel connection? 2. What happened to them that makes them feel, think, or act the way they do? 3. How can we meet families and youth where they are to help improve the system as a whole? Kyle Williams of Youth Villages talks about May being National Foster Care Awareness Month. A new child is placed into foster care every 2 minutes, the need for support services, essential items and foster parents is high. Over 400,000 children nationally are in foster care. With the right mix of support services, communities can help keep families together. Foster care should be part of that support and not a substitute for parents. Child welfare and community partnerships play a critical role in supporting family reunification and in preventing re-entry into foster care.

Samaritas is one of the largest nonprofit organizations in Michigan, with about 2000 staffers across 60 sites statewide. The organization cares for seniors, the underprivileged, foster families, and more.May is Foster Care Awareness Month, and with that in mind, we look at the different ways Samaritas has had to adapt their foster efforts since the COVID-19 hit Michigan. They've ramped up efforts to provide tablets and other technology to birth parents, so that they can stay in touch with their kids in foster care. In person visits have to wait, but maintaining a connection to their birth parents is especially important to kids of any age. Before the shutdown, Samaritas was serving 1,000 kids in the state. They estimate, however, that number to be only a third of those in need. And those numbers are likely to skyrocket after the "shelter in place" order is lifted. There are no guardrails currently - nobody outside the home for kids to reach out to.To prepare for the influx of foster and Child Protective Services cases, Samaritas is simultaneously reaching out to existing foster parents and recruiting new ones. The training for new ones has moved online.Additionally, with the increase in alcohol sales, substance abuse has become an even bigger concern. Kelli Dobner, the Chief Advancement Officer, explained how Samaritas is expanding efforts in this area.Samaritas says "It takes a purple village" to surround these kids, both during Foster Care Awareness month and always.Resources:Samaritas Website: https://www.samaritas.org/Samaritas Foster Care Resource Page: https://www.samaritas.org/fostercareMichigan Motors Forward is produced by JAG in Detroit Podcasts in collaboration with Tanner Friedman Strategic Communications.https://jagindetroit.com/https://tannerfriedman.com/

This week we have a great interview with the lovely Lindsey Stamm, the Operations manager at Arizona127. What is Arizona127? This is an AMAZING organization that exists to recruit, develop, and sustain foster family through training and events. They want to help foster children, and support the families who foster them. Follow them on Instagram to stay up to date on their trainings and events! (Lindsey manages this account and she does an amazing job!) For those who choose not to be a foster family, they recommend checking out these important ways of getting involved: - becoming a CASA (court appointed special advocate) which requires you to take a polygraph test and training. But well worth the time as you get to spend time with children in care, and be a voice for them in their case! - becoming a Mentor through Arizonans for Children, which requires 2 hours a week of your time. They also have tutoring and craft volunteer options available! The (Good) Word of the Day Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. - Psalm 73: 25-26 What a great and encouraging word! We talked about how broken this world is, and the foster care system especially. But, when God is our hope and our portion - we can take heart and have peace. Lightbulb Moments: - At a TBRI training, Lindsey learned, and then reminded us that Hydration and Glucose levels are of the utmost importance and can greatly affect your child's (and your) attitude and disposition. Check your child's urine color to see if they are hydrated enough! - Sesame Street introduced a new muppet who is in Foster Care! And just in time for Foster Care Awareness month! It is so important for people to see others who represent them well in media. Last year, when Crazy Rich Asians came out, the Asian community was elated to see a full cast of people who looked just like them. There is a slew of movies and tv shows out there that have foster children in them, and we are so thankful that Instant Family is one of them, and now Sesame Street is too! - Make sure to check if you are at an Urgent Care or an Emergency Room. The difference is significant in terms of co-pay, and someone who hosts this podcast may have accidentally gone to an emergency room this week, only to be told he was constipated. “I could never do foster care because I’d get too attached.” I get it. Without a doubt, I hear you. And... yes, yes you would. What we shouldn’t do though, is let our fear of becoming attached keep us from diving in head first. What we should do is let our fear of these babies and children not having attachment propel us.Not everyone is called to open their home, but if you are and you are letting fear keep you from moving forward, just take another step. I promise, you won’t regret it.

Sunday marks the beginning of Foster Care Awareness among churches across America. As many of you know, Foster Care is the primary local outreach that we devote time, money, energy, and resources to in our community. We launched this initiative in March of 2013, and the response of our people has been astounding. This Sunday, we will take time to focus once again on this primary ministry at Vintage 242 and how God is calling us to make a life altering difference in the lives of at risk children in Paulding and surrounding counties. We are excited to have Crystal Williams share a spoken word with our Vintage community! She'll be speaking from the unique perspective of someone who spent time in foster care herself. The question we will focus on for your life...What lies are you believing that are keeping you from God's mission in your life? We will look at different stories of scripture, highlight lies, and ask God to open our eyes to the truth of who we are in him! Hope to see you Sunday!
