STLPR's political correspondent Jason Rosenbaum caught up with Missouri's Governor-elect Mike Kehoe in Jefferson City after his gubernatorial race win to discuss his future plans for Missouri's Child Services department, sporting arenas, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and more.
When Indianapolis police responded to a 911 call for an unresponsive child on April 9, 2024, they couldn't have guessed the horrific circumstances of the victim's life and death. 5-year-old Kinsleigh Welty, who weighed only 21 pounds, was clearly malnourished. She had a bruise on her face and fecal matter on her body and matted into her hair, which was crawling with lice. Kinsleigh was pronounced dead at Riley Hospital for Children the same day. This is the story of yet another child failed by Indiana's child welfare system. It's also the story of yet another case of reunification gone wrong and a child who thrived in the care of others, only to die at the hands of a biological parent. Also in this episode, you'll hear from Kinsleigh's great-aunt, Carrie Hogan, who, along with many others, demands change from Indiana's Department of Child Services. On this episode of The Alex Pierson Podcast, our host takes on three major issues that affect all Canadians. First, with construction projects all over the city causing major traffic headaches and congestion Alex speaks wth Raly Chakarova, the executive director of the Toronto and Area Road Builders Association (TARBA). Raly tells Alex why she and other major construction associations are also telling Toronto City Council that they have to do a much better job of laying out these projects for everyone's benefit. Next, with news that the recent terrorist suspect who was planning an attack in New York City was on a Canadian student visa, Alex turns to an expert. Casey Babb a Senior Fellow with the Macdonald Laurier Institute who also teaches Terrorism and International Security at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. Casey and Alex talk about our broken immigration system and how it's being used by bad actors to gain access to North America. And finally, in light of a startling report by Global News, we know now that roughly one child dies every three days in the provincial childcare network. Alex speaks with Jennifer Kagan and Philip Viater, who lost their 4-year-old daughter Keira in a similar manner, and why something that should never have happened in the first place keeps on happening. Pregnant with her fifth child, Susan Horton had a lot of confidence in her parenting abilities. Then she ate a salad from Costco: an “everything” chopped salad kit with poppy seeds. When she went to the hospital to give birth the next day, she tested positive for opiates. Horton told doctors that it must have been the poppy seeds, but she couldn't convince them it was true. She was reported to child welfare authorities, and a judge removed Horton's newborn from her care. “They had a singular piece of evidence,” Horton said, “and it was wrong.”Hospitals across the country routinely drug test people coming in to give birth. But the tests many hospitals use are notoriously imprecise, with false positive rates of up to 50 percent for some drugs. People taking over-the-counter cold medicine or prescribed medications can test positive for methamphetamine or opiates. This week on Reveal, our collaboration with The Marshall Project investigates why parents across the country are being reported to child protective services over inaccurate drug test results. Reporter Shoshana Walter digs into the cases of women who were separated from their babies after a pee-in-a-cup drug test triggered a cascade of events they couldn't control. Alice Bredhold, 12, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2020. Since then, her school nurse made multiple reports to the Department of Child Services in Indiana, expressing concern that Alice's blood sugar was consistently at dangerous levels. Alice died from complications of diabetes on July 4. Her mother, Ashley Bredhold, and father, Brent Bredhold, reportedly did not monitor if and when Alice was taking her insulin and told police they had run out of supplies, despite there being unopened boxes of insulin pumps in their home. The story of Possum Trot is what inspired our question this week. In the movie, Sound of Hope, the little town of Possum Trot in east Texas was absolutely moved by the Holy Spirit. Donna Martin, wife of preacher, WC Martin, became moved by the number of children in need of a home. She began to look into the idea of fostering and adoption. Her husband was initially not moved at all. In fact, he resisted the whole idea. As only the Holy Spirit can work, it didn't take long for WC to join in with the same passion as Donna. Before you know it they had their entire congregation joining in on the mission. The town of Possum Trot had 22 families that adopted 77 children. At one point in time, there were literally no more children that needed a home in the county. WOW!While the story is amazing the movie also does an excellent job of illuminating the whole experience of adoption. Yes, it starts with a heartwarming idea, but the reality is that adoption can come with its share of challenges. The movie depicts this very well. The question presented this week ask: What is Adoption and Fostering Really Like? Many of you may know that we went through the foster to adopt process for our three youngest children. In this show we share our story and many of the different experiences we have had. While our experience is not the same as everyone else's, we believe there are many commonalities. If you are interested in fostering or adoption, check out this show. If you are thinking about the next step, contact your local Child Services department, or a local adoption agency in your area. Enroll in a class about the process and learn as much as you can. At the end of the day, we are all called to serve the innocent and meet their needs. Adoption may be the way for you to help meet this need. This week, Drewby and Yergy head back to New Mexico to discuss the horrifying case of James Dunklee Cruz. James was an adorable little boy who lost his life because CPS failed him repeatedly. Child Services in New Mexico ignored 13 different reports of abuse in his home. In the end, poor James' cause of death was blunt head and torso trauma, caused by multiple fatal blows involving different parts of the body. Shelby Witmer, a seasoned family and child services worker with over 25 years of experience in education, recently addressed the critical issue of how poor mental health contributes to the school-to-prison pipeline. Witmer emphasized the need for new systems to support vulnerable and misunderstood children. With a strong focus on mental health advocacy and creating trauma-informed communities, she highlighted the work of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). At MHALC, the commitment to helping individuals achieve mental well-being is paramount. The organization advocates for a holistic approach to health, emphasizing the importance of nurturing the mind, body, and spirit. While many people focus on physical health through diet and exercise and spiritual health through personal beliefs, mental health often remains neglected. Witmer pointed out that neglecting mental health undermines the ability to achieve one's full potential. MHALC's mission is to promote optimal mental health through advocacy, education, and support. Witmer's visit underscored the organization's dedication to fostering a community where mental wellness is foundational. She called for greater awareness and systemic changes to better support children at risk of entering the school-to-prison pipeline, stressing that mental health care is essential for a healthy, thriving society. Through their work, MHALC aims to create a society that values and actively supports mental well-being, recognizing its critical role in overall health.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
"Cybersecurity is homeland security, cybersecurity is national security." ~ Governor Doug DuceyI recently had the incredible opportunity to sit down with former Arizona Governor Doug Ducey for an exclusive interview on The Public Sector Show by TechTables. Governor Ducey served as Arizona's 23rd governor from 2015 to 2023, during which time he transformed the state into a national leader in cybersecurity and technology modernization. In this rare and candid conversation, Governor Ducey shares his firsthand experience prioritizing cybersecurity as Homeland Security. He discusses the innovative strategies his administration implemented to strengthen the "human firewall" and dramatically reduce the state's vulnerability to cyber threats. But, in case you aren't watching the video, I wanted to pass along a couple of the main points.Cybersecurity as Homeland SecurityUnder Governor Ducey's leadership, Arizona prioritized cybersecurity as a critical component of homeland security. The state invested resources to improve cyber resiliency, recognizing that protecting citizens' data is just as important as physical security.Strengthening the "Human Firewall"Governor Ducey recognized that 90% of cyber breaches were due to human error. To combat this, he focused on strengthening the "human firewall" by requiring monthly cybersecurity awareness training for state employees using realistic phishing simulations. This hands-on defensive training approach, similar to how sports teams practice, enabled Arizona to dramatically reduce the percentage of employees falling for phishing attempts from 14% to 4%.Modernizing State Government through Technology InnovationArizona took a cloud-first approach, moving from outdated on-prem data centers to Google's secure cloud platform. The state also established a Cyber Command Center to monitor and defend against constant cyber threats in real-time. In his final year, Governor Ducey passed the Whole of State initiative, investing $10 million to provide cybersecurity tools to local governments, protecting them from rising cyberattacks.Executive Leadership StrategiesIn this exclusive interview, Governor Ducey shares his perspective on executive leadership strategies, such as the Arizona Management System for operating government like a lean business. He discusses the importance of metrics, strategic planning, selecting the right people, and driving cultural change when working to improve an organization.Lessons from an Entrepreneurial BackgroundGovernor Ducey also shares lessons from his entrepreneurial background, including scaling Cold Stone Creamery, which shaped his approach to expanding the ice cream franchise from one store to over 1,400. His experience in the private sector influenced his leadership style and strategies for driving innovation and efficiency in state government. ------Before we get into this week's podcast, I wanted to give a special shout-out to TechTables podcast sponsors: SentinelOne, Verizon, and SAP.SentinelOne's AI-powered security platform to break down silos and protect this state's entire enterprise with real-time data and control. Family Matters with Jim Minnery - The Faith & Politics Show !
A Catholic couple in Indiana has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hold the state accountable for removing their son from their home because they wouldn't identify him as a girl. I'm privileged to speak with their attorney, Josh Hersberger, today on "I'm Glad You Said That".Josh is the lead counsel on the case and works with our sister organization, the Indiana Family Institute. In M.C. and J.C. v. Indiana Department of Child Services, Indiana investigated Mary and Jeremy Cox because they would not refer to their son using pronouns and a name inconsistent with his biological sex. State courts allowed Indiana to keep the child from their home because of their disagreement with their child—motivated by their religious beliefs—about human sexuality. With the help of Becket and Hershberger, the Coxes filed their reply brief at the Supreme Court, asking the Justices to take their case. Mary and Jeremy Cox are a faithful Catholic couple living in Indiana. In 2019, their son informed them that he identified as a girl. Because of their religious belief that God creates human beings with immutable sex—male or female—they could not refer to him using pronouns and a name inconsistent with his biology. The Coxes also believed that he needed help for underlying mental health concerns, including an eating disorder. To address both issues, they provided therapeutic care for their child's gender dysphoria and scheduled appointments with a specialist to help him with the eating disorder. In 2021, Indiana began investigating the Coxes after a report that they were not referring to their child by his preferred gender identity. Indiana then removed the teen from the parents' custody and placed him in a home that would affirm his preferred identity. I'll chat with Josh about why this case is so important for parental rights today in America.Hope you can join us.Support the show
Given that we have an ineffective and distracted industry that sleeps through primaries and policy fights, we continue to see demonic policies persist in red states. I go through examples of egregious left-wing Republicans and policies in places like Wyoming, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. But there is an Indiana child custody case that takes the cake. We're joined today by Joe Davis, legal counsel at Becket for the Cox family, who had their child removed from them for three years. What was their crime? The Indiana Department of Child Services accused them of abuse for not calling their son, who suffered from mental illness, by a female name! The state of Indiana is actually siding with the agency against Becket as they take the case to the Supreme Court. We discuss the importance of reforming the due process laws in family court and the need to put an end to this demonic policy in red states. Learn more about your ad choices. In our newest dystopian adventure, a Catholic couple in Indiana is asking the Supreme Court to hold the state accountable for keeping their child out of their home after they declined to use his chosen name and pronouns. PREVIEW OF TODAY'S PARROT TALK. FOR THE FULL EPISODE SUBSCRIBE ON ITUNES. The ruby red conservative state of Indiana is the latest state to put transgender rights over parental rights. Jeremy and Mary Cox are fighting the Indiana Department of Child Services for the right to raise their son as they see fit. IDC took their son because they refused to call him by his preferred pronouns and transgender name. IDC said that the Cox family were abusing their son but not affirming his choice, which a court cleared the Cox family of any abuse. Despite the vindication, the state still refuses to release their son back to them. Mike Parrott reveals why in even so called conservative states this continues to happen. He exposes the so called conservative leader and their lack of actions to hold their agencies accountable. Mike exposes the communist and Marxist tactics that are used by the state to destroy the family and to force compliance from their "citizens" Mike also reveals that parents need to do more than just make testimonial videos and he reveals what parents need to do stand up. Because transgender rights, especially when it involves a minor, does not come before parental rights. If states continue to do this, then eventually there will be no such thing as parental rights, and all of our children will be just a product of the state. As Mike Parrott says, "hold on to your children, don't let them in." Parents, especially fathers stand up for your family, and your home. Learn how on this episode of Parrott Talk.
In 2021, the Indiana Department of Child Services investigated parents Mary and Jeremy Cox for Child Abuse and later took their son after they refused to refer to him as a girl and use the proper pronoun. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Prison in 12 Landscapes is a documentary that came out in 2016. It's a beautiful film. Intimate interviews, lush landscapes, and deep attention to the complexity of people's lives, from cities to small rural towns. If it wasn't in the title, it could take a while to realize that its central topic is prisons, and how they shape life far beyond their walls. The prison itself – the sprawling complex of buildings surrounded by fences, razor wire, guards – is just part of the prison system. There are also police and courts. County jails. That's still just what we can see. Like an iceberg, the system of incarceration has a whole lot more going on under the surface. But that's what keeps it afloat. Micol Seigel is an activist, scholar, and teacher who's been studying this carceral system for a long time. Her most recent book, Violence Work, looks at how police and policing are a primary vector of violence enforced and enacted by the state – which is to say, governments. But lately she's been focused on another part of this carceral iceberg. One that is maybe less obviously part of the same system. That's the foster care system. That might come as a bit of a surprise. We think of foster parents as maybe the holiest of parents, doing that hard work of taking in kids they've never met before, who desperately need a place to go. A home. But there's a larger system at play. On this week's Inner States, Micol describes how the foster system, and the Department of Child Services that helps run it, is also totally intertwined with the broader system of policing in this country. That doesn't mean Micol is saying all foster parents are bad people. Just that they – and really, all of us – are part of a bigger carceral system that separates people from their communities, their families, and, sometimes, children from their parents. As a foster and adoptive parent herself, Micol has become deeply familiar with this system. Credits Inner States is produced and edited by me, Alex Chambers, with support from Violet Baron, Eoban Binder, Jillian Blackburn, Mark Chilla, Avi Forrest, LuAnn Johnson, Sam Schemenauer, Jay Upshaw, Payton Whaley, and Kayte Young. Our Executive Producer is Eric Bolstridge. Our theme song is by Amy Oelsner and Justin Vollmar. We have additional music from the artists at Universal Production Music and Ramón Monrás-Sender.

The harsh effects on your body can be managed and overcome. This episode dives into how: Trauma has different levels and is also relative. Whether you experienced significant trauma, such as physical or sexual abuse, or things like parents' divorce, feeling unwanted, poverty, etc. it all has a significant impact on your health as an adult. Today's guest, Hollie Jeffery is CEO of ACE Institute, LLC - A training and Consulting Firm for adverse childhood experiences with over 20 years of experience working in Child Services. Hollie has personally struggled with PCOS, weight gain, chronic fatigue, and depression, AND even suffered a mild stroke in her early 30s due to birth control combined with stressors driving unhealthy lifestyle habits. You're going to learn the mechanistic effects of both trauma and stress on the body's immune system and hormone function. Giving up was not an option for Brittany, even though she was only one wrong decision away from a life full of despair and possibly death. She joined Ty in the Big Z Media studio and shared how she flew under the radar with her drug and alcohol use, shocking her parents at the kitchen table while pleading for help from the grip heroin had on her everyday life. Brittany recounts frequently moving to different cities (and states) due to her father's work and having the gnawing feeling she doesn't truly fit in anywhere. She found ways to relate to kids in high school, as many adolescents do, by dating, drinking, and sometimes drugging. Alcohol introduced her to cocaine and Benzos, which inevitably led to intravenously using Dilaudid for the first time. She turned to stripping to support the newly found heroin addiction that took her down Salisbury St., Kingshighway Blvd., and Hall St. while evading the Jump Out Boys to stay out of jail. After four stints in residential treatment, Brittany knew she had to make a drastic change and plunged into a 12-step community where she has been ever since with almost 12 continuous years of recovery. She now works as a social worker, giving her heart and soul to help parents escape their own Hell and unify with their children. www.myrecoverypodcast.comwww.facebook.com/recoveryuncensoredwww.twitter.com/recoveryuncens1

It was a case of fetal abduction, cruelty, and murder that made international news with gory headlines like "Fetus Snatcher" and "Womb Raider" in the Summer of 2009 involving two former neighbors of a Worcester, Massachusetts apartment building. One woman in her early twenties, the other in her mid-thirties, both pregnant, both struggling. Each seemed to lean on the promise of a new baby to offer a glimmer of hope in their relatively ordinary existence. Darlene Haynes was a 23-year-old mother of three, with a new baby on the way, whose innocence, trusting nature, and desire for friendship killed her. Her murderer was a another mother with a sick need so strong that she would commit a gruesome murder and steal her baby from her. When Darlene was found dead in her apartment, it didn't take very long to figure out that the woman who'd been parading around with a premature infant and an absolutely implausible story was responsible.(This story includes fetal abduction, fetal death, domestic violence, child abuse, miscarriage) Crime of the Truest KindNew England crime storiesHosted by Anngelle WoodOnline: crimeofthetruestkind.comFollow @crimeofthetruestkindFollow the IG feed for updates on unsolved and missing persons cases from around New England Thank you, Gary Murray, of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. Debbie Bright-Chunn and Nikki Murphy were both educators who followed their dream of owning a horse ranch that could provide equine assisted activities for individuals with special needs. Thus Bright Star Ranch was launched four years ago and today they not only work with children who have special needs, but also branched out to provide a program to help children overcome various mental health issues. After listening to this interview, you will fall in love with the beauty of God's creation of horses…and you'll most likely fall in love with these two women and their beautiful hearts! Below are some of our favorite takeaways from today's show: ️ When we simply acknowledge another human being and truly see them for who they are on the inside, it can make a difference in their lives and allow them to flourish. Doing so also holds a blessing for us. ️ Working with a therapy horse can help in areas such as depression, anxiety, long-term illness, and PTSD. Horses can teach trust, communication, healthy relationships and boundaries. It's also a fun way to work through these issues because it doesn't seem like “work.” ️ Horses are mirror animals and can be used to talk about how we rate ourselves. The goal is to raise self-awareness as well as self-esteem. ️ Horse riding provides a visual example of being able to guide both the horse and ourselves down a certain path. This serves as a reminder that we can also guide ourselves down a path of Light and that God gives us the strength to do so. ️ Just as the horse and the rider must exhibit trust in each other, we too must trust God if want to reflect His Light. As we develop our relationship with God, He will prove Himself trustworthy because He is faithful. About Our Guests: Debbie Bright-Chunn earned her Master's in Health Informatics from Louisiana Tech University and worked for 30 years in the hospital field, serving as Health Information Director for 20 years. Her love for horses and therapeutic riding caused her to open a facility in 2018 after she became certified through PATH and CHA. She states, "This job is by far the most rewarding I have ever had and has been my vision for many years." Nikki Murphy graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a Bachelor's degree in Family & Child Services & a minor in Psychology in 2003. In 2004, she graduated from ULM in Monroe, Louisiana, with a Master's in Special Education and later added a certification in Early Childhood Education. As a former special education teacher of over 12 years, she has worked with individuals and a wide variety of disabilities. She brings that knowledge and love for helping others to our team. She says that, “Combining my love of horses & working with individuals with special needs makes this my absolute dream job.” Bright Star Ranch is a 501(c)3 non profit ministry which means that you can make a tax-deductible gift to further this amazing ministry! We start this episode in Texas, where a school counselor outed her school district, testifying that employees were told to HIDE student gender changes from parents and then to report any unsupportive parents to Child Protective Services.
Across the country, measures are being introduced to restrict gender-affirming healthcare, ban LGBTQ+ books, and prevent trans girls and women from participating in sports. Katelyn Burns, the first openly trans Capitol Hill reporter in U.S. history, freelance journalist, MSNBC columnist, and co-host of podcast Cancel Me Daddy, sits down to talk with us about recent and increasing attacks on the health and rights of transgender people across the U.S. Conservatives around the country have stepped up their attacks on trans rights with the attacks falling into a couple of different buckets. Conservative lawmakers are working to ban books about LGBTQ+ orientations and identities in schools and libraries. Florida has recently passed the “Don't Say Gay” bill, which explicitly bans classroom discussion about LGBTQ+ issues, further empowers parents to sue school districts, and requires schools to disclose to parents when their child receives mental health services. At the same time, more than a dozen states have passed legislation that limit transgender girls competing in school sports. A total of 15 states this year have enacted or are considering laws that would limit or ban gender-affirming care—including puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy—for transgender youth. In Texas, the most recent law attacking gender-affirming care has arranged for the state's Department of Family and Child Services to class provision of gender-affirming care to someone under 18 as child abuse. Even with all of these attacks on trans rights it's not all terrible news, on the Transgender Day of Visibility, the White House unveiled a host of meaningful policy rollouts, including having an “X” as one's gender marker on one's U.S. passport, working with airlines and the TSA on deprioritizing gender altogether when it comes to air travel, and the replacement of gender binary airport security scanners.
