Julie VanOrden and Tammy Nichols join associate producer Logan Finney to discuss their mission to make sure women with unplanned pregnancies know adoption is an option. Luke 4:21-30Then he began to say to them, "Today, this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, "Is not this Joseph's son?" He said to them, "Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, 'Doctor, cure yourself!" And you will say, "Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum."And he said, "Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet's hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet, Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow in Zarephath of Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. If you heard last Sunday's sermon, it was full of good news, but I warned you that things were going to change. Back in Nazareth, Jesus' hometown – his friends, family, and neighbors had heard what he'd been up to – preaching and teaching his way around Galilee, and when he showed up in the synagogue, where we find him, still, today – he had that good news for them, which he has been anointed by God to share: “good news for the poor, release for the captives, recovery of sight for the blind, freedom for the oppressed, and the year of the Lord's favor.”And they were all over it. Their home-town boy made good. A local hero. An anointed prophet, filled with spirit and good news and so many gracious words falling from his lips. And Jesus knows they'd like more than just to hear about these things. They'd like to see some of his best work, too, which is why he kind of teases them with that old proverb, “Doctor, cure yourself.” “Show us a trick.” “Give us a show.” “Let's see just how ‘anointed' you really are.”He knows what else they're thinking, too: “Jesus, do something for us – your family, friends, and neighbors – like we've heard you've been doing out there in the world. Release some captives, here. Heal some of us who are sick. Give some of the Lord's favor to those of us who know you best, now that you're home. If you're doing it for them, surely you can do it for us, too.”But Jesus reminds them – not so subtly – that this “Lord's favor” the prophets spoke of wasn't about playing favorites, or taking sides, or “us and them.”He reminds them about how – during a famine once, way back in the day – when all of Israel – the nation of God's chosen ones – could have used a little release and recovery and a dose of the Lord's favor, the prophet Elijah was sent outside the fold, to help some widow at Zarephath in Sidon. And he reminds them about how, during the good ol' days of the prophet Elisha, there were plenty of Hebrew lepers who could have used a cleansing, but that God sent the prophet to an outsider – some foreigner named Naaman, from Syria. And when they hear it, Jesus' newly minted fans lose their minds. They turn on a dime. They turn on Jesus. And they run him out of the synagogue, and straight out of town.“You mean this grace and favor and this recovery and release stuff isn't just for us?!” “You mean we aren't supposed to look out for number one?!?!” “You mean we don't take care of our own, first, and then pick and choose who we think might be worthy?!?!?” “You mean this ‘recovery' and ‘release' and ‘freedom' and ‘favor' is for them, just as much as it is for us?”And, to begin to grasp what was so upsetting and unsettling to Jesus' hometown crowd, we need to be reminded about the insignificance of these widows and these lepers and these foreigners about whom he was telling them. They were at the bottom of the barrel as far as social standing was concerned. They were outcasts. They were outsiders. They were unclean, unworthy, unloveable, and unwanted by the rest of the world. (They were probably undocumented, too, if you know what I mean.)Because, not only was Jesus talking about the outcast, the sinner, the shamed, and the shameful, he was talking about people outside of the Jewish circle. Jesus was saying that, just like the prophets Elijah and Elisha had shown … foreigners to Israel were welcome to the grace of God, too. Not only was God's grace for losers – like lepers and widows – but it was even for Gentile widows and Gentile lepers, too. Which seems to imply that there wasn't anyone beyond the reach of God's love, or beyond the reach of Jesus' own ministry, as a result.Could this be a more hard, holy, timely lesson for us, these days? If Jesus walked into the midst of his people this morning – Christian churches on Sunday morning, filled with those of us who call ourselves, friends and family and brothers and sisters and siblings in Christ – what would HE find, and what would WE do, if he reminded us about the likes of Naaman, the Syrian, or about that widow from Zarephath in Sidon – outsiders and outcasts and foreigners, too?It reminds me of how Bishop Mariann Budde, from the National Cathedral simply, humbly, faithfully, graciously, kindly asked our President to show mercy to immigrants who are afraid of what border policies and deportation practices could mean for them and their families – and about how at least one US Congressman proposed she be deported for it; the 21st Century, American version of being hurled off a cliff, you might say.It makes me think of the rabbit hole of reels and Tik Toks I found myself in, just this week, where Christian-flavored people spend a lot of time explaining why women can't be and shouldn't be allowed to be priests and pastors in the Church. These were men and women, young and old, red and yellow, black and white followers of Jesus – in the year of our Lord, 2025 – who are blind to the fact that, other than Jesus, the very first person EVER to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel, was Mary Magdalene on that first Easter morning. It makes me think, too, of a conversation at the Wellness Center, right around the corner – and quite recently – where someone made note of how, as more people of color find their way there that “the quality of the clientele seems to be going downhill.” I couldn't help but wonder where she might be worshiping Jesus this morning. And did you know that just this past Monday, the Idaho House of Representatives passed a memorial suggesting the US Supreme Court reconsider – and undo – the legalization and protection of same-sex marriage in our country? Heather Scott, the Idaho state representative behind it all, blamed it on Jesus, suggesting that Christians across the nation are being targeted by having to welcome the idea of marriage equality. The sad truth is, too many Christians are still too busy looking for cliffs whenever the message of God's grace and love and mercy and favor gets too wide and too mighty and too scary and too uncomfortable and asks too much of us. And Naaman, the Syrian, and that widow at Zarephath, in Sidon – and those knuckleheads in Nazareth – are all just First Century examples of our 21st Century reality. So today, “this Scripture that is fulfilled in our hearing,” convicts us to ask, who are the 21st Century “widows” and “lepers” among us – because none of this is about widow and lepers anymore. Who are the unloved, the unloveable, the unworthy, or the unwanted as we sit here this morning? Even more, who do we pretend is outside the circle of God's grace as far as Christians in the Church and our community are concerned? We can try to limit God's grace or draw lines in the sand and keep it for ourselves. We can even vote for politicians and policies that do our bidding one way or another. And we can pretend that Jesus' preaching and teaching has nothing to do with those politicians or those policies. We could even try to silence the truth by running the messenger out of town or by hurling him off a cliff or by nailing him to a cross – but we have been there and we've done that and we know how that story ends.Or, rather, we know how that story begins, thanks be to God.Because it is the resurrection that reminds us that God's grace will be shared – no matter what. It will bring good news to the poor. It will release the captive. It will restore sight to the blind. It will let the oppressed go free. The Lord's favor will be proclaimed – whether you and I – Jesus' friends, family, and neighbors are on board or not.And what always gets me when I hear about Jesus' near-death experience that day in Nazareth, is the invitation to get with the program. What I hear is a call to the Church – our congregation at Cross of Grace and the larger Church as God's people in the world – to not be left standing on the cliff like the people of Nazareth, only to find that Jesus has passed through the midst of us – untouched. What I don't want any of us to find is that he's continued on his way sharing grace, doing justice, and offering God's blessings to a world so desperate for it, but that we were too busy or too angry, too self-absorbed or too blind, too partisan or too proud, too selfish or too scared, to join him in that work.Amen

SERIES 2 EPISODE 150: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: It was a presidential kidnapping and assassination video. It showed a pickup truck, Trump flags flapping in the wind, and on its tailgate, with an illustration of President Biden bound and gagged and thrown in the flatbed. Trump posted the video and he knew what he was doing: it is a stochastic attempt to GET Biden kidnapped or assassinated. It all makes me again ask a chilling question I first posed months ago. Had any of Trump's various coup attempts succeeded in 2020 – if any of the coup attempts Trump is planning NOW for this election – exactly what is Trump's plan, or the plans of his thugs and gangs cultists and psychotics and death fetishists and militias and god-and-gun lunatics – for the ACTUAL president he usurps? Now Trump has given us the answer. Have the pick-up truck mob grab Biden and tie him up and throw him in the back of the truck. And the listless, clueless, spineless media as personified as Kristen Welker of NBC, reduces it to: “It is yet another reminder that we are covering this election against the backdrop of a deeply divided nation.” Yeah - like we were divided during the Civil War. If the media had not failed us sufficiently in this case, wait'll you hear the Trump story that wasn't merely covered poorly - it wasn't covered at all. In a move I have long anticipated, Trump minions are begin to soften up potential opposition to repealing or ignoring the 22nd Amendment's presidential term limits and dare us to stop Trump running for re-election in 2028. They have produced nonsensical sophistry in "The American Conservative" that boils down to this: because Trump would not have served CONSECUTIVE terms, the 22nd Amendment wouldn't apply to him. Disagree? Sue him. Maybe you'll get lucky and find a different Supreme Court that will agree with you and actually defend the Constitution. If not: welcome to the Trump Dictatorship. B-Block (38:30) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Such a pile there are EIGHT award winners. I had to expand the medal stand and hand out aluminum in addition to bronze, silver and gold. Your winners? The owner of the San Francisco Giants, the North Carolina GOP State Superintendent of Schools candidate who belongs to an organization that believes Obama is Hitler's grandson, Mayor Adams of New York, Trump's Media Company, Trump's $200 Burger Buy, Roseanne Barr, The Ohtani-deaf New York Yankees, and Representative Mike Turner. C-Block (51:42) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I outlasted five heads of MSNBC and three chiefs of NBC News (one of them twice) and it looks like I'm about to outlast a fourth. The Ronna McDaniel Scandal continues and the fingers and figurative knives are all pointed towards the Chairman of NBC News Cesar Condé. I have my own history with him, and with the predecessor he most reminds me for pure self-absorption: Andy Lack. On today's show, Idaho State Representative for District 2 Heather Scott tells the story of how she got into politics, describes the current political landscape in her state, shares some examples of how the World Economic Forum has managed to work it's tentacles into local legislature and more. GUEST OVERVIEW: Heather Scott is an American biologist, businesswoman, and politician serving as a Republican member of the Idaho House of Representatives (District 2, Seat A) https://repheatherscott.com/ X/Twitter: @HeatherScottID
We now have a movement whose members think that they can sit back, watch Fox News, and vote for the most prominent Republicans the system wants them to know about every two years – expecting things to change. I explain why nothing is changing, and in fact, we are sliding backward. We need to return to bottom-up self-government, and that begins in red states. Today, we spotlight the case study of Idaho with state Rep. Heather Scott, the co-chair of the Idaho Freedom Caucus. She explains how Idaho has the same corporate cartel problem as California, albeit with different lipstick on the pig. If we continue to sit back and do nothing, just assuming the state is red and Republican, we will not have a single red state left. Scott notes how the addiction to federal funding is the kryptonite of red states and how we need a small and active group of citizens to bring back self-government to oppose this addiction. The Freedom Caucus is now working on systemic government reform ideas that will address the core factors that perpetuate the GOP's controlled opposition and failure theater. https://youtu.be/59huzIdgd5A In this video, I talk with Heather Scott, author of Gentle with You, about the importance of self-care, how it impacts parenting, and deep listening. There are 3 guiding principles: forgiveness, releasing guilt, and granting yourself permission. There has been no greater time than now for self-care. Heather Scott is an eyes and heart wide-open self-care advocate who has curiously explored, thoughtfully observed, and powerfully considered the immense need for people to remember their value, vibrance, and unique identity. After navigating the potholes, bumps, and detours in her own discovery of her expression as a woman and a mother, Heather could see that she wasn't alone with her challenges. Other intelligent, capable people were suffering from burnout, invisibility syndrome, and the heavy burden of chasing expectations.Having witnessed the negative impacts of over-stretched and unhappy adults on children through her background in education, Heather identified a need that met her empathic ability to help others. She became certified as a life coach specializing in Parent as Coach training because she knew she could genuinely connect with people in a unique way, one where she can use her natural abilities of holding the space of authentic and present listening and seeing what people are really dealing with.Committed to co-creating rich and deep relationships through reflection and action, this deeply connected way of being mindful and present is Heather's natural talent, her inherent gift to the world. And she is all that while getting shit done and having fun along the way.Currently raising two sons as a single mother for many years, Heather acknowledges that they have provided practical and ongoing experiences that challenge, stretch, and sometimes even reinforce her knowledge and beliefs about parenting. As an educator, presenter, author, and coach, she is pleased to show up, to listen, and to contribute some awareness tools and techniques. When you are ready to explore what you can create for your fulfilled future, connect with Heather to discover what is possible for you.Heather's first book Gentle with You is now available to purchase on any online bookseller, like GoodReads and BookBub. This is Gabriel Rench with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Wednesday, January 8th, 2020. More on Australian Fires Yesterday Toby reported that in the 1990s, Bob Carr's liberal Labor government began a massive forest lock-up program. Peter Austin writes at theland.com.au, “Before that “greening” frenzy began, soon after Carr came to office in 1995, national parks and reserves accounted for some 4.8 per cent of New South Wales. Today the total area of the state, controlled by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, is more than 9 per cent. In less than 20 years the area of national parks and related reserves has virtually doubled, but the resources deployed to manage this vastly expanding empire have not doubled with it. On the contrary, it was revealed last week that even since 2011, successive budget cuts have resulted in the NPWS slashing its staffing of rangers by one-third, thereby impairing its capacity to conduct hazard reduction burns. But before Carr took over, much of the coastal bushland now locked up in national park was prudently managed state forest, where fuel loads were kept down by logging programs, regular thinning and cattle grazing.” So there is that, and now more information has come out that according to the New South Wales Police Force website: “Since Friday 8 November 2019, legal action – which ranges from cautions to criminal charges – has been taken against 183 people – including 40 juveniles – for 205 bushfire-related offences. Of note: 24 people have been charged over alleged deliberately-lit bushfires 53 people have had legal actions for allegedly failing to comply with a total fire ban, and 47 people have had legal actions for allegedly discarding a lighted cigarette or match on land.” Russel Crowe, due to the fires in his home country Australia, was unable to attend the Golden Globes and accept his award. He instead sent a letter that was read by Jennifer Aniston on his behalf when he was awarded best actor for his work on the series "The Loudest Voice”. In his letter he blamed global warming for the fires. If it was me, I would have blamed the 24 arsonist. More on Iran The Obama administration really was a foreign policy disaster. One of his biggest blunders, not even sure we can call it that, was the Iranian Nuclear deal. According to Fortune.com: “The U.S. announced the controversial nuclear deal with Iran on July 13, 2015. At a news conference on January 16, President Obama declared that the U.S. was lifting the first raft of sanctions against Iran. He also stated that the U.S. would return $1.7 billion to Iran, as agreed in the negotiations at the Hague. That same day, Tehran released the U.S. hostages, and the U.S. freed seven Iranians detained for violating financial and other U.S. sanctions on their home country. Hence, the return of the five Americans appeared to be one side of a prisoner exchange with Tehran. But Obama didn't mention that the same day, $400 million was being shipped over 6000 miles for deposit in Iran's treasury. The shipment was a secret until The Wall Street Journal broke the story on August 2, 2015. Since then, Republicans from Donald Trump to Paul Ryan have assailed the White House for paying a gigantic ransom when government-paid ransom is barred under U.S. law, and for hiding the ploy from a public already highly skeptical of the U.S.-Iran nuclear agreement. President Obama denied the payment to Tehran was a ransom. The White House contends the payment simply settled a decades-long financial dispute...” Some might call this a Quid Pro Quo, but I digress. Our meddling in foreign affairs has been a disaster. We create problems and then we back out, we create more problems then we throw money at them, we create more problems and push democracy on them, we create more problems then we throw troops at them...rinse and repeat. At no point should conventional wisdom tell you that giving Iran $1.7 billion dollars is a good idea. BTW Vox does not think paying Iran $1.3 billion dollars was a scandal. But think about this. Obama pumps billions of dollars into Iran, and then we are surprised that Trump Drone bombs their head of military operations for killing our troops, US contractors, and attacking our embassy? I heard it put this way, that killing Soleimani was equivalent to killing our head of CIA, FBI, and Secretary of State all in one shot. We are in this mess because we refuse to obey the word of God. Of course there are all sorts of Just War Theory issues here, but I want to bring this down to this...because this is not often consider when talking about our foreign policies. The bible explicitly commands us not to bribe. Proverbs 21:14 says “A gift in secret subdues anger, And a bribe in the bosom, strong wrath.” Give gifts not bribes, and this should especially apply to the middle east. One last thing about the middle east. On Monday the Iraqi Parliament voted on a non-binding resolution to expel US military from the region. This of course is political as they are trying to appease the Iranian government while allowing for the protection they really want from the US troops. More of course will be developing regarding the Iran/Iraq story, so stay tuned. Golden Globes If you missed the Golden Globes, like I gladly did, don't worry I still have you covered. To my delight, British comedian Ricky Gervias, was invited to host the Golden Globes. I have followed Ricky for a while, and sometimes his humor really gets my funny bone and other times he gets the trash can. But what is consistent about Ricky, is that he does not care what is cool and what is culturally acceptable, and that is what keeps me engaged with his Twitter account. As you know the Golden Globes is for the Hollywood elite to pat themselves on the back and pretend they have some sort of moral ethos that matters to America. Well, Ricky utterly destroyed that on Sunday night at the Golden Globes. I mean he just took all their logs and shoved them into their eyes beyond repair. For starters he lambaste Hollywood's friendships with Jeffrey Epstein and Harvy Winstein, and then ends with my favorite lines of the whole night: Using Apple TV+ series “The Morning Show” as his jumping-off point Ricky said: “A superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing, made by a company that runs sweatshops in China…(obviously referring to the production of Apples iPhone and other devices) If you do win an award tonight, don't use it as a platform to make a political speech. You're in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. If you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your god, and fuck off,” Gervais concluded. It is moments like these where you are grateful for God's common grace in this world, where even unbelievers can smell the massive hypocrisy coming out of rank Hollywood. Hollywood is full of rampant abuse of women, children that grow up in Hollywood regularly tell the tales of the darkness of Hollywood, and the enormous amount of bad storytelling and movie flops that come out of Hollywood is astounding. We often give Christian movies a bad rap, but how many Christian movies come out every year? 2? 5? 10? 20? Well how many pagan movies come out of Hollywood and absolutely flop or are full of lascivious trash? Hollywood by far has the worst record. So, next time you see a Christian movie come out, just remember it was made with no naked women, no compromised actors, and probably produced with only a couple million bucks. Think twice about how you judge that Christian movie, and why you give Hollywood a pass on the quantity of trashy movies that billow out of their cameras. Christian movies need improvement for sure, and if they were putting out 100 movies a year, we might actually think differently about the Christian movie scene. Lastly, I want to bring to your attention what is happening here in Idaho regarding Idaho's fight to end abortion. As you know we have had Scott Herndon, the architect of our end abortion legislation here in Idaho, and the two sponsoring legislators John Green and Heather Scott on our show a couple times in the past two years. This is their second attempt to push end abortion legislation here in Idaho and the momentum is building. I believe they now have six sponsoring legislators, which is really really good. The latest development, is that Scott Herndon's efforts, which began under the umbrella of AbolishAbortionId.com, and they have now started a PAC out of this initiative. The purpose of Abolish Abortion PAC is to make direct financial contributions for re-election and election to the campaigns of legislators and candidates who will fight for the abolition of abortion through the Abortion Human Rights Act bill. If enough money is raised, the PAC can also support legislators and candidates through direct expenses not coordinated with the candidates' campaigns, such as direct mailers, newspaper and radio ads. A financial contribution by "Abolish Abortion PAC" will appear on all of the legislators' campaign finance reports (which people do read) and will send a clear statement that the people of Idaho, through their financial contributions, want abortion ended in Idaho, without compromise. To make your financial contribution to Abolish Abortion PAC, which will in turn be used to support our champion legislators, send a check payable to: Abolish Abortion PAC PO Box 916 Sagle, ID 83860 To stay up on what is going on visit http://www.abolishabortionid.com/. I think this is a great idea, and a good way to put your money where our desires are at and an opportunity to bless legislatures that stick their neck's out for this legislation. So, consider giving to this pack, even $10 so your names are on record for these legislators to see that you care. I know Scott Herndon and he is a godly guy with a great family, and pray God's blessing on the legislative session this coming year. Well that is all for now.
