Highlights From This Episode “PPE has always been recommended to reduce exposure because gloves and gowns provide physical barrier to protect against dermal absorption. But what we didn't know back then was what gloves and gowns were made of mattered. So PVC gloves were often used just because they were readily available in all our clinical settings. Gowns were rarely worn for drug administration, even though they had been recommended since early on, and many considered gowns back then as optional because the wording in the [Occupational Safety and Health Administration] guidelines said ‘recommended' and not ‘required.'” TS 3:19 “Those early chemo gloves were a bit like wearing gloves you might use to clean your oven. They were so thick and got in the way of taking care of patients or mixing drugs or administering drugs. So the biggest change, I think, is that gloves that are currently available are very thin, and they provide the necessary protection for those who are handling hazardous drugs. We now have a gloves standard that requires permeation studies to demonstrate the protective ability of the gloves before they can be labeled for use with hazardous drugs.” TS 11:56 “ONS and HOPA developed a position statement on safe handling of hazardous drugs. … This came because our two organizations were unable to support some of the other proposed guidelines from another organization. So we got together, and through our cooperation, resulted in language about the importance of safe handling, about supporting safe handling for practitioners, pharmacists, and nurses. Also, I feel really good about this—our cooperation resulted in language about protecting the rights of staff who are trying to conceive or who are pregnant or who are breastfeeding to engage in alternative duty that doesn't require them to handle hazardous drugs.” TS 17:12 “If there's no worker safety, then who's going to take care of the patients?” TS 21:52 “What I find most rewarding is connecting with nurses, who now understand the risks of exposure and are committed to minimizing their personal exposure. When I first started speaking about safe handling, and that's going back a long way, there were a lot of nurses who were skeptical about the need for self-protection. They had been handling hazardous drugs for years and had no signs of ill effects, and so they assumed that we weren't overreacting with all of the recommendations. They saw the use of precautions and PPE as a speed bump in their busy day and also thought that was unnecessary. I rarely see that now. Nurses are concerned for their own safety and more open to protective behaviors.” TS 23:50

In this episode of the Valley Today, host Janet Michael welcomes back Andrea Cosans, Executive Director for Winchester CCAP to discuss various topics related to the services offered by CCAP. Andrea shared that CCAP provides more than just a food pantry; they offer a range of services including small financial grants and clothing. Last year, they supported 3,200 families through their food pantry, provided financial assistance to 1,200 households, and helped 1,600 individuals through their clothing house. The conversation transitioned to the recent gala, which featured a successful fashion show where volunteers and business owners modeled clothing from the clothing house, raising over $30,000. Andrea appreciated all the volunteers and sponsors, highlighting contributions from local community members and organizations. They discussed several collaborative initiatives, including the provision of prom dresses through the organization Gowns for His Glory, and the support from entities like Crescent City Charities and the Adams Company. Additionally, Janet and Andrea highlighted the role of the United Way in fostering collaboration among nonprofits to better serve the community. Andrea elaborated on the food distribution processes at CCAP, noting how they collaborate with various local food pantries to ensure a diverse and sufficient food supply. This year, they face challenges due to the holiday schedule but are committed to finding solutions. They also mentioned the importance of fresh produce, often sourced from local store donations. Janet brought up the importance of culturally appropriate food, particularly for the Afghan refugees and other diverse populations they serve. Andrea cited the partnerships they have established to meet these needs. The Thanksgiving giveaway was a major focus, with Andrea explaining the logistics involved and the broad reach of their food distribution, ensuring hundreds of local families have a proper holiday meal. They also look forward to the Christmas giveaway, intending to provide both food and toys in collaboration with Bright Futures and other partners. A significant portion of their operations is volunteer-driven, with Andrea expressing gratitude for their 200 volunteers. She emphasized the value of volunteers from all walks of life, including those fulfilling community service requirements. Janet and Andrea both spoke about how vital these volunteers are to their mission. They also discussed the ongoing need for volunteers with specialized skills to help further CCAP's mission. Tune in on Friday for more of the conversation with Andrea about the types of food most needed at area food pantries and why. After a long closure, the popular Disney character dining restaurant 1900 Park Fare is finally reopening at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort. What to wear when dining there, plus our take on the new Disney Weddings Villains Gowns. Would you wear a black wedding gown? The "Grand" Reopening of 1900 Park Fare is on April 10 at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort1900 Park Fare is re-opening at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort on April 10, 2024, but it's nothing like it was before as some major changes have taken place. The restaurant will be open for breakfast and dinner (no lunch service), with buffet dining at both seatings. One big point of differentiation is that it will be the same character experience at both breakfast and dinner, whereas breakfast and dinner offered different characters in the past.Who are the Characters You Can See at 1900 Park Fare? Aladdin in his Prince Ali look, Cinderella, Mirabel and Tiana in her new look for Tiana's Bayou Adventure. If you're wondering how this peculiar selection of characters ties together, Disney has positioned it as "they celebrate the power of a wish."New Decor at 1900 Park Fare1900 Park Fare was in need of a reno, so the refreshed dining room is a good thing. If you are a longtime patron of 1900 Park Fare you'll be glad to know that Big Bertha (the antique organ that is a Grand Floridian original since 1988) is front and centre in the restaurant. There is a new mural for the entrance and different decor in the different rooms, including drawings of carousel animals inspired by Alice in Wonderland and The Little Mermaid. In the Main Dining Room there are twelve new portraits created in the impressionist art style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The murals feature different Disney characters as they hope, dream and wish upon a star (or even a magic lamp or a wishing well). What to Wear to Breakfast or Dinner at the all-new 1900 Park FareWhether you go all out or just like to wear something with a subtle tie-in, it's fun to theme your wardrobe to a themed restaurant--especially if you have little ones.In this episode of the Disney Travel Style Podcast, Amelia shares her advice on to take a Disney Bounding style approach to the all-news 1900 Park Fare character dining at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort.-- Give Your Disney Wedding a Villainous TouchIn our last episode we discussed the new line of Disney Wedding gowns for 2024 and now Disney has released wedding gowns from the darker side. Disney Villains Wedding GownsThe Disney Villains inspired collection from Allure Bridals feature stunning black wedding gowns inspired by Maleficent, Ursula, Jafar and the Evil Queen. All four styles are available starting at $2,000. And yes, you can get them in ivory as well if black is just too much. But we say if you're going to go there...then go all the way!The Ursula gown features a mermaid silhouette with tonal sparkle beadwork on the bodice. Drawing on the flair for the dramatic that is Ursula's trademark, this gown has detachable sheer sleeves including ruffled detailing at the cuffs. If Maleficent is more your style, you can go with a fitted sheath gown in black and green. This gown is truly eye catching, featuring shimmering green velvet and very delicate lace appliques, layered over black organza. The ivory version has chiffon lace accents for a softer touch, but, again, if you're going to go then go all the way.The Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs comes with linear lace, floral embellishments, beads, and sequins delicately scattered over tulle. The dress features sweetheart neckline leading into a peaked bodice, complemented by truly eye-catching embroidery (which is a trademark of all of these gowns). This gown is rounded out with a wrapped ruffle shawl for an added layer of wicked elegance. The Evil Queen wedding gown is available in black, ivory, or gold. Finally, in a unique twist, there is a wedding gown inspired by a male villain: Jafar from Aladdin. This Disney Villain wedding gown features a plunging neckline inspired by Jafar's trademark collar and it's accentuated by a satin collar. For a sophisticated twist, the bodice is tailored with a nod to menswear (ast Disney puts it) and is paired with lightly puffed full-length sleeves with buttoned cuffs. The Jafar gown is offered in either a subtle ivory or a bold black. --Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel Style PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, we that you enjoyed it. Jordan, Damon & Tony are curious – is fear of femininity the thief of joy? This week we revisit our relationship with the expression of femininity in what we wear. Are we uncomfortable with expressing ourselves outside of the confines of the gender binary? Is that fear greater for men within our community than for women? We challenge what we've been taught but also interrogate who has the right to own this aesthetic in the future, if anyone at all. The beauty in finding new ways to outwardly express who we are is a joy we revel in. So in the future let's be more masc, fem and everything in between. We know a lot but we don't know it all, so join the conversation on social and let us know your thoughts.

In 2016, fashion historian Kate Strasdin was given an extraordinary object – an album of richly coloured and brightly patterned fabric scraps, all collected by one woman across the Victorian age. Speaking to Ellie Cawthorne, Kate reveals what Anne Sykes' dress diary can tell us about style, culture and the experiences of ordinary women in the era – and how it led her to poisonous stockings and pirates in Borneo.
