Turkey season may be behind us, but the real habitat work is just getting started. In this week's Land & Legacy podcast, Adam and Chad discuss what they've observed since the season closed and how those observations continue to reinforce the importance of active habitat management. One of the most noticeable changes has been the return of turkeys to the farm after neighboring properties stopped illegally baiting birds during the season. It's another reminder that turkey movements and behavior can be heavily influenced by concentrated food sources. Once those artificial attractants disappeared, birds quickly shifted back to utilizing quality habitat—areas providing natural forage, nesting cover, brood habitat, and security. The discussion also centers around the growing need for additional prescribed fire across the landscape. While many properties have seen improvements from previous burns, the reality is that much of the habitat has already begun to lose the open ground conditions, diverse plant communities, and insect-rich environments that turkeys depend on. Fire remains one of the most effective tools available for resetting succession, stimulating native plant growth, increasing bug production, and maintaining quality nesting and brood-rearing habitat. A major topic of conversation is the growing popularity of "No Mow May" and "No Mow June" campaigns. While well-intentioned, Adam and Chad explain why simply not mowing is often being promoted as a habitat solution when it does little to address the real limitations facing wild turkeys. Allowing cool-season grasses and weedy lawns to grow taller for a few weeks does not create quality nesting cover, brood habitat, or the diverse native plant communities needed for long-term turkey recovery. The focus should instead be on active habitat management practices such as prescribed fire, timber management, native vegetation establishment, grazing strategies, and invasive species control. Throughout the episode, Adam and Chad share field observations from their own farm, discuss current turkey use across the property, and outline practical habitat improvements landowners can implement right now to benefit turkeys throughout the year. If turkey populations are going to rebound across much of their range, the conversation must shift from passive management ideas to proven practices that create the habitat conditions wild turkeys truly need.

We walk through the real behind-the-scenes work that turns a well-meaning plan into a meadow that lasts, from agreeing the purpose to getting residents, committees, and maintenance teams on the same page.We also clear up one of the biggest sources of confusion: many “wildflower” seed packets are actually short-term floral meadow mixes designed for summer colour. They can be lovely, but they often need re-sowing and won't build a stable ecosystem. A native Irish wildflower meadow, using Irish provenance seed, behaves differently and gives deeper biodiversity benefits, supporting pollinators, insects, and bird life through nectar, habitat, and seed heads. We talk through what meadows look like outside peak bloom, and how to help people see “untidy” as a sign of life rather than neglect. From there we get practical: choosing a suitable location (especially if it's shaded or wet), starting from vegetation-free bare ground, and when “No Mow May” can work and when it just produces long grass. We share the best sowing times (September first, May second), ways to improve the look with spring bulbs, and the essential maintenance step of cutting once a year and removing clippings to keep fertility down. If you're planning a meadow in Ireland, we also point you towards the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan resources and signage that make community buy-in much easier. If this helped, subscribe for more straightforward gardening advice, share it with your local group, and leave a review so more people can find the show.Master My Garden Grow Your Own Wildflower Meadow Online Course: https://mastermygarden.com/grow-your-own-wildflower-meadow/If there is any topic you would like covered in future episodes, please let me know. Audio from our free seasonal tasks masterclass on March 31  Spring makes people want to rush outside and “fix” the yard, but we've learned that the fastest way to a healthier landscape is slowing down. We kick off with a practical Upper Midwest spring gardening checklist: last-chance dormant-season pruning for shrubs and fruit trees, a clear warning to leave oak trees alone once temperatures warm, and a gentler spring cleanup that protects overwintering native bees, caterpillars, and other beneficial insects. If you only tidy one spot, we suggest keeping it near high-visibility areas and leaving the rest of the habitat intact a bit longer. From there, we get into planting and maintenance decisions that actually make life easier. We talk about timing for perennials and native grasses, early cool-season vegetable seeding, and why “leave the leaves” still applies in spring. We also share our take on bed edging, why we minimize dyed mulch, when bird feeders should come down, and how lilacs are getting thrown off by climate patterns plus when to prune them without losing blooms. You'll also hear how we aim for a realistic sweet spot with natives while still leaving room for fun color like dahlias and gladiolus. Then we shift into spring lawn care: overseeding a bee lawn with clover and other pollinator-friendly plants, mowing higher for deeper roots, why we skip No Mow May here, and the hard no on Weed and Feed. We cover irrigation timing, power raking myths, and a simple organic fertilizer approach including the half-pound nitrogen guideline. Bored with manicured lawns, some homeowners adopt No Mow May all year long

レアジョブ英会話 Daily News Article Podcast

No Mow May encourages homeowners to stash the lawn mower each spring and let flowers and grass grow for pollinators and water retention. And if your neighbor's lawn already looks like a wildflower field most of the time, it could be more intentional than passersby might assume. The movement has expanded to “Let It Bloom June” and the fall version: “Leave the leaves.” Conservation and horticulture groups say year-round low-mowing while selectively leaving native plants to grow can save huge amounts of drinking water and lead to lasting and impactful ecological changes. The movement is popularized by groups such as Plantlife, a conservation organization based in England. American lawns, based on English and French traditions, are increasingly seen as a wasteful monoculture that encourages an overuse of pesticides, fertilizer and water. Outdoor spraying and irrigation account for over 30% of a U.S. household's total water consumption, and can be twice that in drier climates, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The No Mow effort does encourage people to think more about biodiversity in their yards, and many local nature organizations provide guidance on picking noninvasive plants that fit each region's climate and precipitation levels. Reducing mowing encourages longer-rooted native grasses and flowers to grow, which breaks up compacted soil and improves drainage, “meaning that when it rains, more water is going to be captured and stored in lawns versus being generated as a runoff and entering into our stormwater system,” said Jason Sprouls, urban waters program manager for the Cumberland River Compact. Nashville homeowner Brandon Griffith said he was just tired of mowing when he decided years ago to wait and see what comes up. Then he consciously added flowering plants to attract bees and bugs. Now he sees so many insects and pollinators all over his garden that the neighbors' kids come over to look for butterflies. He said he's never heard a complaint—in fact, some of his neighbors also stopped mowing for a month each spring. “I just enjoy coming out and walking around,” said Griffith. “And looking at it, it's kind of peaceful. It's kinda relaxing.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

David joined me for an inspiring discussion about leaving the leaves & Autumn tips for nature friendly gardening in Ep. 52. This time we're embracing Garden For Wildlife month & No Mow May, with tips for encouraging wildlife to thrive in your yard in Spring & Summer as well as sharing how container gardening can ensure that even in the smallest of outdoor spaces you can help contribute to supporting & nurturing your native flora & fauna.David is celebrating 25 years with NWF so alongside sharing his wonderful gardening tips our discussion draws on his experience to explore the sometimes unexpected value that urban spaces provide to nurture wildlife, the relationship between environmental & social justice issues & the power of community led nature spaces to create lasting change. We also share the fun we both had setting up wildlife cameras to spy on the new wild neighbours that move in when we create habitats in which they can thrive. In these dark & challenging times we our reminded that nature can be our sanctuary, providing joy & hope, when we share our spaces with amazing creatures & we welcome them into our lives we are rewarded in a myriad of unexpected ways.David Mizejewski is a naturalist, author & television presenter with the National Wildlife Federation. He holds a degree in Human & Natural Ecology from Emory University & is an expert on wildlife & our environment. He is dedicated to using his knowledge & unbridled enthusiasm to help others understand & protect the natural world. Matthew Shepherd, Director of Outreach and Education, Bring Back the Pollinators Matthew has worked for the Xerces Society for more than two decades, initially at the vanguard of a new movement to protect pollinators, but then on endangered species and a range of other issues, as well as several years leading Xerces' communications work. Throughout this time, he maintained a direct involvement in pollinator conservation in towns and cities, and in his current role has returned to outreach and community engagement. Much of this focuses on supporting neighborhood-level efforts such as pollinator gardens and small habitat projects in parks, as well as leading the Bring Back the Pollinators campaign and promoting the No Mow May and Leave the Leaves initiatives. Matthew is author of numerous articles and other publications, including Attracting Native Pollinators (Storey Publishing, 2011) and Gardening for Butterflies (Timber Press, 2016). He also is the long-time editor of Wings, the Xerces Society's magazine. Matthew's 35-year conservation career began in England and took him to Kenya before his arrival in the United States. After completing a master's of science in land resource management, Matthew managed National Trust lands in Oxfordshire, established a successful community-based conservation program in Essex, and helped to create Samphire Hoe, an award-winning nature park at the foot of the White Cliffs of Dover. During a VSO placement in Kenya, he worked with local communities and government agencies to improve the management of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, on the coast north of Mombasa. It was in Kenya that he met a Peace Corps volunteer—who is the reason he moved to Oregon. They live on the west side of the Portland metro region. Their two children are now at college, but they still get together—although sometimes they roll their eyes when Matthew points out yet another super-cool insect that he found.
