On January 4th, 2008, a clerk at a gas station in DeKalb County, Georgia watched a man vacuuming out his van. Just hours earlier, the clerk had seen that same man in news reports – he was identified as a person of interest in the disappearance of a woman from three days prior. This man was Gary Hilton, and while he was initially only a person of interest in the disappearance and murder of Meredith Emerson, he ended up being charged with 4 murders in total (and suspected of many more) and became known as the “National Forest Serial Killer” who killed Meredith Emerson, Cheryl Dunlap, and Irene and John Bryant in 2007 and 2008. When most people go hiking or camping it is to get away from the city and enjoy nature. Remember to watch for predators like bears, wolves, and oh ya.. serial KIllers. This is the story of Gary Hilton aka The National Forest Killer
Gary Michael Hilton is an American serial killer and handyman who gained notoriety for his crimes in the early 2000s. He was convicted of several murders, most notably the 2007 slaying of Cheryl Dunlap, a nurse and Sunday school teacher in Florida. Hilton's modus operandi often involved targeting hikers and outdoors enthusiasts in remote areas, leading to his nickname "The National Forest Serial Killer." He was known for his brutality and lack of remorse. Hilton is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.Gary Michael Hilton's criminal activities became more widely known after his arrest in 2007 for the murder of Cheryl Dunlap, but evidence suggests he may have been involved in other killings prior to that. Born in 1946, Hilton had a troubled past and a history of run-ins with the law, including charges for theft and assault. His most notorious crime occurred in December 2007 when he abducted Cheryl Dunlap, a registered nurse and Sunday school teacher, from a hiking trail in Florida's Apalachicola National Forest. Dunlap's body was found decapitated over a month later. The brutality of the crime shocked the community and drew widespread media attention.During the investigation into Dunlap's murder, authorities discovered that Hilton had been living a transient lifestyle, often camping in national forests and preying on unsuspecting hikers and campers. This revelation led to speculation that he may have been responsible for other unsolved disappearances and murders in similar areas across several states. In 2008, Hilton was also linked to the murders of John and Irene Bryant, an elderly couple who disappeared while hiking in North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest. Their bodies were later found, and Hilton was convicted of their murders as well.Hilton's methods were often brutal and opportunistic. He would target individuals who were alone in remote areas, using his knowledge of the wilderness to evade capture. After his arrest, Hilton showed little remorse for his crimes and was ultimately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole as well as getting the death penalty for his crimes in Florida. Someone is abducting and murdering hikers on the Appalachian Trail. He's not just killing them, he's decapitating them. Police catch a suspect and as they begin to look into his past, they realize, his history of killing goes much farther back in time than they originally suspected. Gary Hilton is a vile, evil man who did unthinkable things to people who were just out trying to enjoy nature. He is one of the worst, yet not one of the better known killers. He has some very strange personal quirks. He also has a very strange MO for a serial killer. In 2007 people began going missing while out on what they thought were ordinary hikes in National Forests of the Southeast U.S. Their debit and credit cards would be used several times for cash withdrawals after their dissapearacnes and then soon their bodies would be discovered. Often these bodies would not be found whole. The killer would be caught on bank security cameras although he himself well enough that he couldn't be identified. This killer made a monumental mistake however, when he abducted Meredith Emerson. In the struggle for her life she would create a cascade of evidence that would lead to Gary Hilton's capture, although she would pay for it with her life. Gary Hilton believed that society was causing all of his problems and he wanted to live a life of solitude in the forest with his dog. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to sustain that lifestyle financially and decided that he would just steal that money from other people who were taking advantage of the national forests. He would wait for them to enter the woods and make sure they were never seen again.
