In another Friends of the Show episode, we are joined by Bryan Wade, who is here to teach Richard all about the wonderful game of Magic the Gathering. Who is a great guest right up until the Last Minute. Then he is a big DISAPPOINTMENT. We touch briefly on the Adventure Time version of Love Letter. Then Bryan tells us about his go-to game Sheriff of Nottingham before we discuss the confusion often surrounding Netrunner before jumping head first into World of Magic the Gathering. We try to keep the jargon to the minimum so Richard doesn't get confused and we even ask the ultimate Magic Question - What Magic Card would Brad Pitt buy you if he wanted you to be his friend? At the end of it all, Richard might even be tempted to dive in and sample some Magic.. Please note that while we continue to mention Mr Jeremy Greer in a BAD LIGHT, understand that he is actually a very wonderful and amazing human being and me and Bryan think he is totally NOT THE WORST. MTG Pro Tutor - Insights, Tips & Advice from Magic: The Gathering Pros
A.E. Marling has won a Modern Star City Games invitational qualifier and has been one game away from the Pro Tour TWICE. He writes the incredibly popular and gratefully useful Foolproof Magic series for GatheringMagic. He is also a cosplayer, a Level 20 flavor judge, and a fantasy author. Mr. Foolproof Magic Himself A.E. shared some amazing tips all throughout the episode and I'd be remiss if I didn't try to catch them here for you. Consume Magic event coverage. Watch what the pros are doing and learn from their successes as well as mistakes. Play your land "in isolation" to create a visual queue that you've played a land this turn. That way you won't accidentally play two lands in a turn. Organize your board in an easy-to-track way. Bottom line: Develop a system that works for you and use the Foolproof Magic articles as a spring board into systematic. The Foolproof Magic suite: Foolproof Magic Foolproof Magic 2 Foolproof Magic 3 First Set Revised Favorite Set Innistrad Favorite Card Arcbound Ravager What makes Magic fun for you? The imagery and imagination are so fascinating while the mental sport is captivating. Early Challenge Feeling like he deserved to win and then tilting when he didn't was A.E.'s biggest struggle. One mistake cost him a tournament when he was young and this drove him away for a time. A.E. eventually realized that losing because you made a mistake is one of the beauties of Magic: The Gathering. Level Up Moment Realizing that your decisions matter and Magic is a game that when you make a mistake you lose. That's awesome because it shows that every choice is important. Best Format Sealed / Draft and Modern Biggest Mistake Players Make Tilting and not understand why it happens or how to control/curb it. We had a great discussion about stoicism and it's application to Magic. Connect With A.E. Marling @AEMarling

When Ann and Nancy Wilson sang the song "Magic Man" back in 1976, they probably weren't talking about this week's guest, but maybe they should have been. Eric Garneau makes a living because of Magic: the Gathering (in a more mundane way than you may be thinking), and he's going to talk about it with Clayton, who used to play in high school, and Tim, who didn't know what to make of the phrase "big black deck."
It's been a while since we recorded, so we've got news! An article on Gathering Magic about Vorthos podcasts (we got an honorable mention!), new Duel Decks, and a new eBook are all on the docket, so do enjoy that. Then we get to the fun part, the first of the Journey Into Nyx previews! There's a god, there's all the mechanics (old and new), there's lots of crazy stuff, and there's a boat that screeches to a halt. Oh, and the credit card mask! Holy crap the credit card mask! GET ON THE BOAT! We finish up the episode with the announcement of the first video on The Mana Pool's YouTube channel! It's a new Whazzap! video, so go watch it and enjoy and subscribe, because there will be more stuff in the future! We also spend a good amount of time thanking a listener for a major out-of-the-blue donation. If you'd like to send us money...don't. Just trust me on this one. Erin Campbell is a self-described handful. Before she was hosting her Magic interview podcast, The Deck Tease on GatheringMagic.com, she was tearing up World of Warcraft and blogging all about it. Oh, and she’s a trangendered woman to boot. Not afraid to talk about it, gaming that is, we had a great conversation about growing up, porn stores, elitism, being mean, and much more. Here are the relevant links: Erin’s coming out blog: http://thestoriesofo.wordpress.com/2011/09/18/out/ Nina’s coming out blog: http://manadeprived.com/just-a-girl/ And the response on Hipsters of the Coast: http://www.hipstersofthecoast.com/2012/12/hope-eternal-trans-not-special/ As always, send feedback to me on Twitter @mattmendoza or via email acrossthetablepod@gmail.com. Adam Styborski works harder than you. Between his marketing gig at Geico, traveling to tournaments for Wizards, managing GatheringMagic.com, being a dad and a husband, and the laundry, he’s a busy guy. We meant to meet up to cast from DC, but I was thwarted by a faulty piece of equipment. Instead, we spoke over Skype about being an asshole, our “guys,” and what you actually do with a math degree. As always, send feedback to me on Twitter @mattmendoza or via email acrossthetablecast@gmail.com. Also, please leave the podcast a review on iTunes, it helps get it out there. Follow the cast @acrossthecast for updates and new episodes. And don't forget to leave me a comment on ManaDeprived.com! Thanks for listening!
As if you couldn't tell from the title, we're joined this episode by former Muse, former Gathering Magic writer, former Star City Games writer, current DailyMTG writer and longtime Mana Pool listener Bruce Richard! Be sure you pronounce that all French-like, it turns out he's Canadian. But don't hold that against him, he's still completely awesome! You can follow him on Twitter @manaburned We begin the episode by getting Bruce to give us some background. Who he is, where he came from, that sort of thing. From there we dive right into Commander previews, because heaven forbid we have any freakin' time at all between preview seasons. But at least these cards are pretty cool, if not a little wordy at times. After an appropriate enough musical break, we've got a really fun Magic Mad Lib, followed by a brand new Story Circle! We've gotta do a Commander-style Story Circle with one of these new legendary dudes, and if you were listening closely to the previews I'm pretty sure you'll be able to figure out which one. If you want to see the full list we came up with, just click here: http://themanapool.com/the-deck-box/storycircle298edh/ Bruce's many, many archives:StarCitygames: http://www.starcitygames.com/tags/BruceRichard/2000-01-01/2013-10-17 Muse Vessel: http://musevessel.wordpress.com/category/windborn-musings/ GatheringMagic: http://www.gatheringmagic.com/author/BruceRichard/ Dailymtg.com: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Archive.aspx?author=Bruce%20Richard Intro & Outro Music – Diamond by Swift – http://www.myspace.com/swiftbandBreak Music - Map of the Problematique by Muse - http://muse.mu/This episode's post: http://themanapool.com/podcast/episode-298 Forum thread for this episode: http://cardshark.freeforums.org/episode-298-serious-fun-with-bruce-richard-t957.html Check out our archive at http://themanapool.com/category/podcast Our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/TheManaPool Our Google+ page: http://gplus.to/themanapool Email us at dorks@themanapool.com Follow us on Twitter at @TheManaPool Cardshark Member Promotions: http://www.cardshark.com/Promotions/Member-Promotions.aspx Subscribe to our RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/themanapool
We are joined this week by none other than Adam Styborski! He's @the_stybs on Twitter. For those of you that don't know...what rock have you been living under? He's the (former) writer for Serious Fun on DailyMTG, the current writer of the brand new Commander column Command Tower on DailyMTG, he's on the text coverage team for Wizards, and he's all about some Pauper Cube. Oh yeah, he's the Content Manager for GatheringMagic too. But he joins us this week to tell us all about Command Tower, how it came about, what you can expect, and assorted other things. Really, Stybs just talks on and on about whatever we throw in his direction for a good long time, and it was really awesome. You can REALLY feel how much he loves Commander as a format. He even brought a tear to my eye at one point. That could have been my roommate's cooking though...After we had drained Stybs dry of his soul...I mean information...we still had PLENTY of news to talk about. Rather than list it all here and then list it all again down there...we're just gonna put it down there. Chewie note: Eric wanted his GP Nashville episodes to go up as soon as possible, and Chris Otwell is unavailable to upload casts to the MTGCast Network until Sunday. So I offered to help a brother out and get his casts out there ASAP for everyone's listening enjoyment. Keep an eye out, they'll be going up as soon as I get them from him! This episode starts with a conversation with Richard F. Castle, creator of Inside the Deck, a featured documentary-style video cast on Gathering Magic. We talk about his origin and what he does. Check out his blog at www.insidethedeck.com.Next up is Evan Erwin (@misterorange on Twitter) of Star City Games. We talk about his expanding role in the SCG organization and he reveals that the life tracker in the Star City Mobile App will be getting an overhaul. Then Sam Black (@SamuelHBlack on Twitter) takes some time to go over his 50 card draft deck with me (yes, you read that right). He answers the question “Can you draft too many Selhoff Occultist?” He certainly has an interesting view on the drafting format.I end the episode by talking with Ethan Heilicher who has an amazing set of decks put together for battling with his friends. Some might call it a block of blocks. He was featured on the main coverage site. He is the president of RAWG (Rochester Wargamer's Association & Guild). You can find him and contact him on Twitter as @Pokezel I'd like to give a special thanks to Chewie for hosting these shows on his site and getting them up (almost) live for me. And another special thanks goes out to Mana Deprived for hosting my text write-up, which will be going up after the weekend is over!If you have any specific things you would like to hear on the show, please reach out to me on Twitter! You can find me as @EricMTGCast there.
On this episode we're missing Brian, who had a last-minute before-Christmas dinner thing. So We're joined by Brandon Isleib, better known as the Seedborn Muse over on the Muse Vessel! Of course, you'll be able to find him over on Gathering Magic on Tuesdays from now on, so maybe you should check that out too. But since we had a guest host, we decided to make a potpourri episode of random smaller topics that have come up recently. First off there's a quick discussion of the two cards Banned from Modern. Then we took a quick look at Avacyn Restored. We let Brandon cut loose on a topic we recently we recently talked about, keeping casual Magic casual. Then there was a discussion of creatures with Defender in multiplayer Magic. We finished up with a nice long discussion about the various mechanics in Future Sight and which of them were our favorites. That one was a good one. Big thanks to Brandon for joining us, we had a lot of fun with him! You guys should definitely go check out his Musings, along with the other two guys over on The Muse Vessel! Chewie here. I got home from a long trip to find that my computer wasn't working...20 minutes before recording was supposed to start. After trying to coax it back to life, I gave up and had to drive to Mike's place, forgetting to bring the microphone with me. I also had to get food or I was going to die. That's how this episode started. That also explains why I didn't know what episode we were on at the beginning, give me a break. But enough discussion! This episode is all Innistrad previews, all the time! We touch on every new card that had been shown since our last recording, this time with another special guest! After a bit of email and some news (including our long-lost interview with Amanda, which can now be found on Red Site Wins), we are joined by two very special guest hosts. No longer do we need wonder if these two are actually one and the same person, because I heard them both talking at the same time! Our two special guests are none other than the returning Adam Styborski and first time guest but long-time dork Chris Lansdell. If you want to find more about our guests, consult the links below. With introductions out of the way, we proceeded to talk about the various M12 events we attended, which included a vicious bad beats story from Stybs. After spending some time on M12 as a whole, we decided to do a Story Circle with our hosts. Apparently Chris does this a lot, since he ripped off the idea for his own show. But that means a better deck for all involved, right? We started with Pyromancy, and it just went out of control from there. With all the cards we rattled off, there's a wonderful starting place for all you deckbuilders out there. Probably three or four starting places, actually. From here the discussion went far afield, covering such random topics as planking, scrapple, old Hot Pockets commercials, and Billy Madison. I really wish I was making this up. Hope you guys enjoy! Our long-lost interview with Amanda Stevens is on Red Site Wins: http://redsitewins.com/2011/06/02/amanda-chewie-and-3-other-dorks-aka-the-mana-pool-interview/Adam StyborskiWeekly columnist for DailyMTG: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Archive.aspx?author=Adam%20StyborskiThe Pauper Cube: http://thepaupercube.wordpress.com/Writer for Gathering Magic: http://www.gatheringmagic.com/author/adamstyborski/Casual Editor for Quiet Speculation: http://www.quietspeculation.comTwitter: @the_stybsChris LansdellHost of Horde of Notions: http://www.hordeofnotions.com/Writer for Mana Deprived: http://manadeprived.com/chris-lansdellOccasional host of Mana Screwed: http://mtgcast.com/?cat=57Twitter: @lansdelliciousIntro (and new Outro!) We are joined this week by a very special guest, Adam Styborski. He writes the Serious Fun column for the mothership, he writes for GatheringMagic, he's the Casual Editor over at Quiet Speculation, and he writes a Pauper Cube blog. Here are the links!- http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Archive.aspx?author=Adam%20Styborski- http://thepaupercube.wordpress.com/- http://www.gatheringmagic.com/author/adamstyborski/- http://www.quietspeculation.com- Twitter: @the_stybsWe talked to Adam for a while about his writing, his playing, and whatever else Brian thought up. Then we all discussed the New Phyrexia Prerelease, which most of us ended up attending. One of us was gunslinging, can you guess which one? After that, we did one of our nonsensical but fun Magic Mad Libs! And yes, Stybs helped out! Then we started talking about Equipment. Which ones we love, which ones are awesome, which ones are awesome for multiplayer. Whatever we could think of. Adam had some especially interesting things to say on this topic, so pay attention.
