Louisa Thomas on a Ballplayer's Epic Final Game; Plus, Remembering the Composer of “Annie”

In honor of The New Yorker's centennial this year, the magazine's staff writers are pulling out some classics from the long history of the publication. Louisa Thomas, The New Yorker's sports correspondent, naturally gravitated to a story about baseball with a title only comprehensible to baseball aficionados: “Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu.” The essay was by no less a writer than the author John Updike, and the “Kid” of the title was Ted Williams, the Hall of Fame hitter who spent nineteen years on the Boston Red Sox. By happenstance, Updike joined the crowd at Fenway Park for Williams's last game before his retirement, in 1960. Thomas, looking at subtle word changes that Updike made as he was working on the piece, reflects on the writer's craft and the ballplayer's. “Marginal differences really matter,” she says. “And it's those marginal differences that are the difference between a pop-up, a long fly, and a home run. Updike really understood that, and so did Williams.”Plus, a visit with one of the great modern practitioners of the earworm, Charles Strouse, who wrote music for “Bye Bye Birdie” and “Annie,” and the theme to “All in the Family.” Strouse died this month at ninety-six. In one of his last interviews he gave, in 2023, he spoke with the Radio Hour's Jeffrey Masters about his rivalry with Stephen Sondheim. “Stephen and I were friendly enemies. He didn't like me much. I didn't like him less.”

Video claims it will take "a few weeks" to pick lawyers.Met with a lawyer ($500/hr, 2 hours booked).Posted picture near a waterfall instead of legal updates ("reset and reload").Now targeting Jacinta Allan as well.Promises refund of remaining balance if no prospect of success.Discussion on cooker lawyers (Matouk, Buckley). Monica's motivation seen as attention/clout chasing.(01:17:54) Return to The Cali (Caledonian Hotel, Singleton)Dave attended Pauline Hanson & Stuart Bonds event ($20 lunch that never happened).Low turnout (~45 people in beer garden). Worn as badge of honour.Homeschooling attempt due to "woke trans agenda".Red Ensign described as "real flag".Unregistered campaign trailer incident.Pauline Hanson: Speech built to "greatest hits" (Aboriginal industry). Mumbles less the longer she speaks.Cali Update: Corruption Whistleblower book sold at bar (credit card accepted). Eureka beer on tap (FJB beer rebranded/gone?). Frenchies brewery connection? Pub seems to be returning to normal operations, but Red Ensign still flies. Food looks good, beer selection poor (Lion Nathan). No coal miners attended the event despite Bonds' background.(01:36:30) Candidates Forum: Patterson (Port Stephens)Dave attended forum; ABC filming due to anti-wind turbine mob presence.Low turnout of protesters (~5 loud individuals). Mike's Minute: Fascinating polling results out of Australia and Canada

Polls are funny things at the best of times, and despite plenty of evidence that they can be as wrong as they can be right, we still seem fascinated, if not obsessed, by them. There are two races at the moment being heavily polled: Australia and Canada. Canada votes this Monday, Australia in a couple of weeks. Canada is more interesting, if for no other reason than the incumbents were losing by so far it wasn't funny, but are now leading. The PM quit and the new bloke, Carney —who once ran the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England— is now chasing the top job. On the surface, that change of leadership might have played a part in voters' minds – Trudeau was past his used-by date in a Jacinda Ardern “loved then hated” kind of way. More likely, south of the border, Trump got elected, tariffs became an issue, and Carney looks like the person who can better stand up to America. Polling out yesterday says the Conservatives are closing as people refocus on local issues like housing and cost of living, but the gap is still 12 points. Which is an amazing swing given the gap was 20 points the other way until tariffs stole the headlines. Meantime, in Australia it's gone from a race where the incumbent would be lucky to survive, far less thrive. Where a hung parliament was probable, requiring any number of accommodations with Greens and Teals and Independents, given a minority was the best Albanese could hope for, to what increasingly looks like an easy romp home with a majority. Marginal seat polling out yesterday shows Labor with a 3.5% swing in the past week. Another poll had 45% of voters saying they didn't like Dutton's personality, therefore wouldn't vote for him. Competence, cost of living, that apparently doesn't count. You look at him, you don't like him, he's toast. It hardly seems a sophisticated way to decide the future of your nation, but then that's democracy, isn't it? One argument says Albo should win —first term governments don't lose— haven't since the 30s. But Canada, if the polls are right, that would be a victory from the ashes. What happens in another country is so profound: the party that was getting thrashed has their fortunes completely reversed. That's one for the history books. Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie are back to examine the latest headlines and talking points from the world of pro cycling, this week aided by TNT commentator Rob Hatch. The Classics have migrated (slightly) south to the hills of Limburg and the Ardennes, with the Brabantse Pijl and Amstel Gold kicking off the final phase of the spring season last week. In the former, Remco Evenepoel completed a stunning return from injury to outsprint Wout Van Aert. Amstel saw an even more surprising denouement, with Mattias Skjelmose proving too quick - just - for Tadej Pogačar and Evenepoel. We ponder what this all means for the remainder of the Ardennes Classics, with a detour via Coorevits Corner. There's also a look back at the life and times of British cycling legend Barry Hoban. Has calculating your income tax rate in the past been overwhelming? Today, I'm going to discuss the complexities of income tax rates, particularly for self-employed individuals. I explain the progressive tax system, the difference between marginal and average tax rates, and provide practical tips for calculating taxes accurately. The conversation aims to demystify tax calculations and empower listeners with knowledge to manage their finances effectively. Join me in this episode to hear some tips on estimating your income tax rate and how you can avoid errors when calculating your income tax.    Also mentioned in today's episode:  00:00 Understanding Income Tax Rates 09:33 The Progressive Tax System Explained 11:58 Marginal vs. Effective Tax Rates 17:04 Calculating Your Taxes Accurately 23:20 Final Thoughts and Resources Takeaways: People confuse marginal tax rates with their actual tax rate. Income tax calculations are more complex than they seem. Self-employment tax is a flat rate of 15.3%. Estimating tax rates requires guessing due to timing. Graduated income tax means different rates apply to different income slices. Both low and high earners pay zero tax on the first $11,000. Marginal tax rates only apply to the last dollar earned. Average tax rates provide a more accurate tax estimate. Online calculators can simplify tax calculations. Self-employment tax should not be double counted in estimates.   If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, review and share it!  Every review makes a big difference by telling Apple or Spotify to show the Sunlight podcast to new audiences.   Links: Get your FREE Deductions Guide

If you're a new listener of our show and -especially- if you like Florian Zeller's THE SON, you might want to skip Contrarians Corner. Zeller's follow-up to his critically acclaimed The Father was a bust with critics and audiences - which means Alex & Julio will do their best to find things to praise within it and hopefully be funny along the way… but this is a movie about Hugh Jackman trying to help his suicidal teenage son so, you know. Ah, the long gone days of 2015. When white supremacists were a little more coy about their activities and actually tried to cover them up when things got too bad.
