For the Glory KC is back with the 111th episode of the show. The 2024 MLS season just came to an end eight days ago, but we've already got Sporting Kansas City dates for 2025. This past week the draw for Sporting KC's CONCACAF Champions Cup opponent happened and the team drew fellow MLS club Inter Miami. Shortly after, the Feb 18th and 25th dates were announced for the two-legged competition. As a part of that release, January 11th was listed as the date that SKC's 2025 preseason will begin with players reporting to Kansas City. That's just under a month from a soccer ball being kicked in preparation for CCC and the season. Sheena and I get into what we think about Sporting KC playing Messi and Miami again. We ponder if Messi will play (on a cold Tuesday night in KC) and if the game will be moved from the announced location of Children's Mercy Park to Arrowhead Stadium again. In addition, there were several quicker stories in the Sporting KC universe, including having no player selected in the expansion draft and the club not selecting anyone in the first round of the Re-Entry Process. Stage two comes next week, along with the 2025 MLS SuperDraft where SKC will pick fourth. The KC Current made news this week with their end of year roster announcements. Three more players are added to the list of women not returning to the club, and we got official word on Bia Zaneratto and Regan Steigleder coming back. We weight in on those moves and a few other stories, including a record five players in the top 19 of jersey sales for the NWSL this past season. In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few topics, including: MLS rumors The Vancouver Whitecaps are for sale Bailey Sparks, formerly of SKC II, is up for the Mac Hermann Trophy USL have an expanded Jägermeister Cup announcement and more! Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Sporting KC Learn their CCC Opponent - 6:16 SKC's Preseason Announced - 27:15 Other Sporting KC updates - 35:32 KC Current updates - 49:18 Digital Crawl - 59:08 As a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled dot com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. In this episode, I welcome 3 fantastic guests. Omar Salgado was the first overall pick in the 2011 MLS Superdraft by the Vancouver Whitecaps. Additionally, he played in the youth national team systems of both Mexico and the United States. Towards the end of his professional career, he decided to pursue a career in law and last spring graduated from Northeastern University with his law degree. Along with Omar, I'm joined by Alfredo Bozalongo and Marcos Villeda. Both are recent graduates of the College of William & Mary who played soccer. Alfredo and Marcos had questions about pursuing professional soccer and law school. We decided to do portions of this episode in Spanish. This one is jam packed with stories and great information. Please enjoy!
Hello Colorado Rapids fans. Welcome to the final episode of Season 6 of Holding The High Line with Rabbi and Red. We put to bed the 2023 Rapids season, finally. The guys banter about Decision Day. We discuss relevant things from Saturday's 1-0 loss to RSL. How about five academy products on the field at once! Then we talk offseason. Diego Rubio and Jack Price have announced they're leaving. Matt's got scoops on Lalas Abubakar, Danny Wilson, and Jonathan Lewis. We go through and make predictions on every player who has a team option or is out of contract. There's also some MLS SuperDraft news that might benefit the Rapids for the 2024 draft. Then we talk coaching search and the timeline for that decision. The guys end the pod by thanking the Rapids Community. Regardless of how the season has gone, you've all been awesome, you absolute legends. It takes a village, and we've got a great one. Also, Red shares some sentimental moments and shenanigans from A Burgundy Affair (and maybe the after party).
In this episode we welcome Aleksey Korol, the Associate Head Coach at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Aleksey moved to the US from the Ukraine when he was in high school and went on to play collegiately at Indiana University. He made 3 college cup appearances and guided the Hoosiers to back-to-back national titles as a junior and senior. Korol concluded his collegiate career at Indiana in 1999 as the leading point scorer in NCAA Tournament history and the fourth-highest point scorer in the illustrious history of IU soccer. Aleksey was recently inducted into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame. Aleksey then went on to be the fifth pick in the 2000 MLS SuperDraft by the Dallas Burn. It was a real privilege for Justin Chezem, who is the men's coach at Christopher Newport University and I to have Aleksey on the podcast. I hope you enjoy it. He is literally the definition of a “Homegrown Player.” In the 2000's, Major League Soccer started a Homegrown Player initiative which allowed clubs to develop their own youth players without exposing them to the MLS SuperDraft and thereby giving the club the opportunity to sign the player themselves. That's exactly what the Colorado Rapids did with Davy Armstrong. Davy was born in Aurora and started playing soccer at the age of 6. He excelled at the sport and turned heads when he played for Rangeview High School as well as his club team. Three years before he graduated from Rangeview, Davy entered the Rapids Youth System and the MLS's initiative worked perfectly: Davy became the Rapids first homegrown player when they signed him to their pro team in 2010. Turns out there was a lot going on in 2010: Davy was just 18, graduated from Rangeview, gave up a scholarship at the University of Washington to sign with the Rapids and the Rapids won the MLS Cup. Trying to figure out professional sports at the age of 18 isn't easy. Davy got through it and played for the Rapids, Phoenix FC and the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. Eventually injuries got the best of his young body and it was time to retire from a sport that had been his identity for nearly two decades. These days, Davy is a firefighter, with a very heartfelt reason behind his passion for helping people.

Dax McCarty sits down with Kei Kamara after the May 6th Nashville SC 3-0 victory over the Chicago Fire for a quick chat about journeymen stories, memories of the 2006 MLS Superdraft, and more.
This week, Bobby Boswell sits down with St. Louis City SC's multifaceted right-back Jake Nerwinski to talk about his soccer journey. Coming from a big soccer family, Nerwinski talks about the natural love he found for the game while playing under the same coach his father had growing up, Tab Ramos. Before getting drafted by Vancouver Whitecaps FC, it wasn't until Nerwinski's senior year at The University of Connecticut (UCONN), that he considered playing professionally. Between injuries and working to improve his game over the years, Nerwinski describes how shocked he was to be selected 7th overall in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. Once drafted, he reminisces on how quickly his MLS career began and how Vancouver will always feel like home to both him and his wife.Spoiler Alert: Stay for the incredible COVID wedding story!
Orlando City was nearly perfect in the preseason but a couple of late goals against the New England Revolution on Saturday night at Exploria Stadium gave the Lions their only loss in the buildup to the 2023 MLS season. In this week's show, we discussed that loss and the win over Stetson University in the final two friendly contests before things get real. We also talked about the update on rookie Duncan McGuire, putting all three of the Lions' first-round picks from the 2023 MLS SuperDraft under contract for 2023 and potentially well beyond. The club also unveiled some stuff in the last week, including the sharp new home “The Wall” kit on Saturday and a plethora of new (local) food offerings within the stadium on Tuesday evening. We also touched on Major League Soccer's new playoff format and how weird it is (and why). Orlando City SC President of Business Operations Jarrod Dillon returned to the PawedCast this week to discuss the lessons he's learned in his first year on the job, some of the adjustments that have been made, some more that could soon be made, and we grilled him on the topics of how to maximize the acquired land adjacent to the stadium and a potential throwback third kit. Big thanks to Mr. Dillon for speaking with us in the middle of his evening job as taxi driver for his kids. After the chat with our guest, we dropped some news of our own as to the future of this show and our coverage of the Orlando Pride. We feel like we can do a better job and give the club the respect it deserves with our decision and we can't wait to turn that into a reality as soon as possible. The Orlando Pride got their preseason friendlies underway with a 2-0 win over Gotham, which is still a club with a name that works best when abbreviated. Other topics included Seb Hines officially naming a couple of new staff members, Haley Bugeja leading Malta to victory, Adriana and Marta playing a competitive match at Exploria Stadium with Brazil in the SheBelieves Cup, and the U.S. Women's National Team winning the event. Finally, we looked in our mailbag, in which our listeners asked us about what road stadiums we want to visit (and why), which Eastern Conference teams will give Orlando City trouble, and more. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 327 went down: 0:15 - Preseason Orlando City results, all rookies are signed, a new kit, new food, and a dumb playoff format. 33:14 - Jarrod Dillon entertains and informs us (and possibly you, too!). 56:32 - A plethora of Pride news, our mailbagbox responses, and our key match-ups and score predictions for the Lions vs. the Red Bulls.
